Prenatal Cannabinoid Exposure: Why Expecting Individuals Should Take A Pregnancy Pause From Using Cannabinoid Products, Alexis Lin, Gelonia L. Dent, Suzy Davies, Zarena M. Dominguez, Leigh-Anne Cioffredi, Gabrielle L. Mclemore, Jessie R. Maxwell Jan 2023

Prenatal Cannabinoid Exposure: Why Expecting Individuals Should Take A Pregnancy Pause From Using Cannabinoid Products, Alexis Lin, Gelonia L. Dent, Suzy Davies, Zarena M. Dominguez, Leigh-Anne Cioffredi, Gabrielle L. Mclemore, Jessie R. Maxwell

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Cannabinoid use in all populations is increasing as legalization across the United States continues. Concerningly, there is a lack of caution provided by medical providers to pregnant individuals as to the impact the use of cannabinoids could have on the developing fetus. Research continues in both the preclinical and clinical areas, and is severely needed, as the potency of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, has increased dramatically since the initial studies were completed. Thus far, clinical studies raise compelling evidence for short term memory deficits, impulse control issues, and attention deficiencies following prenatal cannabinoid exposure (PCE). These …

Ousmane Sembène : Une Esthétique Du Diiso, Mbaye Diouf Jan 2023

Ousmane Sembène : Une Esthétique Du Diiso, Mbaye Diouf

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The representation of public speech continues to determine two major components of African text and film, that is, the dialogical and the narrative. As a site of relational negotiations, reminders of the doxa and ceremonial practices, this public word is formulated and refined in instances of verbal performance such as consultation (diiso), panegyric (tagg), farce (foh) or tirade (xas). For an author such as Ousmane Sembène, the elaboration of the text (Le dernier de l’Empire) and of the film (Guelwaar) constitutes a moment of aestheticization of the diiso …

Implementing A Service Dog Registration In The United States, Avary Martin Jan 2023

Implementing A Service Dog Registration In The United States, Avary Martin

Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection

The presence of fake service animals in public spaces is increasing every day. These mislabeled dogs are posing a great danger to working service dogs and the rights of the handlers that utilize them. In order to reduce the number of fake service dogs in public and ensure equal accessibility to service dog users, a service dog registration should be implemented across the United States. Requiring a public access test to be conducted before a dog can be registered would ensure that any dog working in public has reached the standard of behavior required to be a service dog. This …

High Volume Multiplex Staining Of Mouse Model In Alzheimer’S Associated Disease Pathology, Chloe Embry Jan 2023

High Volume Multiplex Staining Of Mouse Model In Alzheimer’S Associated Disease Pathology, Chloe Embry

Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection

Although neurodegenerative diseases are often clinically distinct, they typically share common pathological markers. One of the most common causes of clinical dementia is Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Pathologically, AD is defined by the presence of intercellular tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau proteins and extracellular plaques made of abnormally cleaved amyloid-beta proteins. However recent genome-wide association studies have also found that many of the predispositions for AD are located on or near genes highly expressed in microglia. In the healthy CNS, microglia act as the brain’s immune system and are chiefly involved in neuronal support and maintaining homeostasis throughout the CNS. Typically, …

Chains Shall He Break: A Vision For Reconciling Worship, Kyle Joseph Harmon Jan 2023

Chains Shall He Break: A Vision For Reconciling Worship, Kyle Joseph Harmon

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

In the Evangelical church, there is a disparity between the worship of the church and a lack of care for the marginalized and oppressed in American society. Though their worship proclaims freedom, chains being broken, and captives set free, the church does little to advocate for the actual poor and disenfranchised. Because of these and other reasons, the American evangelical church has come to resemble something other than both its heritage and the Body of Christ described in Scripture. Instead, it has become a cloistered, segregated, echo chamber for those who agree on orthodoxy to retreat into and sense the …

Plant Community Response To Control Of A Dominant Invader At Multiple Scales, Alexander R. B. Goetz Jan 2023

Plant Community Response To Control Of A Dominant Invader At Multiple Scales, Alexander R. B. Goetz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Control of invasive Tamarix spp. in riparian systems has long been a priority for management in western North America, but questions remain regarding the response of the broader plant community to different treatments. Here we summarize a series of approaches at different scales to quantify the effects of Tamarix control on characteristics of this ecosystem, including provisioning of wildlife habitat. In the first chapter we analyzed findings of the last 20 years using meta-analysis and found that although treatment has been successful in reducing Tamarix and promoting native vegetation to some extent, most literature reports very small effect sizes and …

The Evolutionary Causes And Consequences Of Mammalian Hybridization, Kelsie E. Hunnicutt Jan 2023

The Evolutionary Causes And Consequences Of Mammalian Hybridization, Kelsie E. Hunnicutt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The natural recombination of divergent genomes within hybrid offspring provides windows through which we can study evolutionary processes and the dynamics of speciation. In this work, I use a combination of comparative and population genomics on both laboratory crosses of divergent rodent lineages and a hybrid zone of cottontail rabbits in the wild to study the causes and consequences of hybridization in mammals. Hybrid sterility is a common reproductive barrier between species that tends to preferentially manifest in the heterogametic sex and frequently genetically maps to the sex chromosomes. Thus, the sex chromosomes appear to play a special role in …

Sense Of Community And (Third) Place Among Young Adults In Permanent Supportive Housing: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry, Danielle Maude Littman Jan 2023

Sense Of Community And (Third) Place Among Young Adults In Permanent Supportive Housing: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry, Danielle Maude Littman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unhoused young people have often endured co-occurring experiences of marginalization, including long-term abuse and neglect from systems which have failed to support them. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is a formal intervention which seeks to offer stability and support to young people. This three-manuscript dissertation uses community-engaged mixed methods to understand sense of community, sense of place, and third places among young adults in PSH in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The first manuscript used longitudinal mixed methods to understand how PSH residents’ (N = 27) sense of community shifts over 1.5 years of living in PSH. We found that residents’ sense …

Rosalie Edge And The Modern Environmental Movement, Elizabeth Claire Coleman Jan 2023

Rosalie Edge And The Modern Environmental Movement, Elizabeth Claire Coleman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This thesis examines and follows the actions of an understudied activist in the environmentalist movement: Rosalie Edge. This thesis relies and encourages a combination of conservation, environmentalism, and historical women’s history in America. Rosalie Edge’s work as an environmentalist created a new and effective way for environmentalists to advocate for the environment around them. She created a pamphlet medium that invited scientists and other conservationists to publish writings and opinions that went against what the Audubon Society, the Biological Survey, and legislators were doing and publishing. The research for this project combines analysis from other professionals in the field with …

Labour Of Love: Chinese-To- English Fan Translations Of Bl Web Novels, Kirk Kanesaka, Gladys Mac Jan 2023

Labour Of Love: Chinese-To- English Fan Translations Of Bl Web Novels, Kirk Kanesaka, Gladys Mac

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

The genre of boys’ love (BL) has enjoyed huge popularity since its Japanese beginnings in the 1960s, and it has taken root in popular cultures in many countries. BL arrived in China via fan translations of Japanese manga into Chinese. With the rise of online fiction platforms in China, local writers produced widely popular male–male romances that gained traction locally and abroad. The outflow of Chinese BL mirrors fan activities that led to the popularity of Japanese manga and anime in the United States. Fan translations of Chinese-to-English BL fiction are one of the most important links in introducing Chinese …

Myopia is a dynamic and rapidly moving field, with ongoing research providing a better understanding of the etiology leading to novel myopia control strategies. In 2019, the International Myopia Institute (IMI) assembled and published a series of white papers across relevant topics and updated the evidence with a digest in 2021. Here, we summarize findings across key topics from the previous 2 years. Studies in animal models have continued to explore how wavelength and intensity of light influence eye growth and have examined new pharmacologic agents and scleral cross-linking as potential strategies for slowing myopia. In children, the term premyopia …

The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment And A Woman’S Desire To Have Children, Tayah Simpson Jan 2023

The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment And A Woman’S Desire To Have Children, Tayah Simpson

Psychology | Senior Theses

This study evaluated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and feelings about parenting among adult females. It was hypothesized that women with a history of maltreatment during their developmental years would have less desire to have children than females of similar age who were not maltreated. The Childhood Maltreatment History and Desire to Have Children Questionnaires were completed by 51 females aged 20 years and older. Results indicated a statistically significant lower desire to parent among females with histories of Low and Severe childhood maltreatment than for females without such history. Further comparisons revealed the same pattern of findings when women …

Investigating Novel Ispe Inhibitors Of The Mep Pathway In Mycobacterium, Seoung Ryoung Choi, Prabagaran Narayanasamy Jan 2023

Investigating Novel Ispe Inhibitors Of The Mep Pathway In Mycobacterium, Seoung Ryoung Choi, Prabagaran Narayanasamy

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

In a recent effort to mitigate harm from human pathogens, many biosynthetic pathways have been extensively evaluated for their ability to inhibit pathogen growth and to determine drug targets. One of the important products/targets of such pathways is isopentenyl diphosphate. Isopentenyl diphosphate is the universal precursor of isoprenoids, which are essential for the normal functioning of microorganisms. In general, two biosynthetic pathways lead to the formation of isopentenyl diphosphate: (1) the mevalonate pathway in animals; and (2) the non-mevalonate or methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) in many bacteria, and some protozoa and plants. Because the MEP pathway is not found in mammalian …

With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), the field of creativity faces new opportunities and challenges. This manifesto explores several scenarios of human–machine collaboration on creative tasks and proposes “fundamental laws of generative AI” to reinforce the responsible and ethical use of AI in the creativity field. Four scenarios are proposed and discussed: “Co-Cre-AI-tion,” “Organic,” “Plagiarism 3.0,” and “Shut down,” each illustrating different possible futures based on the collaboration between humans and machines. In addition, we have incorporated an AI-generated manifesto that also highlights important themes, ranging from accessibility and ethics to cultural sensitivity. The fundamental laws proposed aim to …

Vitamin D Inhibits Osteosarcoma By Reprogramming Nonsense-Mediated Rna Decay And Snai2-Mediated Epithelial-To-Mesenchymal Transition., Enrico Capobianco, Vanessa Mcgaughey, Gerbenn Seraphin, John Heckel, Sandra Rieger, Thomas S Lisse

Faculty Research 2023

Osteosarcomas are immune-resistant and metastatic as a result of elevated nonsense-mediated RNA decay (NMD), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Although vitamin D has anti- cancer effects, its effectiveness and mechanism of action against osteosarcomas are poorly understood. In this study, we assessed the impact of vitamin D and its receptor (VDR) on NMD-ROS-EMT signaling in in vitro and in vivo osteosarcoma animal models. Initiation of VDR signaling facilitated the enrichment of EMT pathway genes, after which 1,25(OH)2D, the active vitamin D derivative, inhibited the EMT pathway in osteosarcoma subtypes. The ligand- bound VDR directly downregulated the EMT …
