Friend Or Foe? The Role Of Transforming Growth Factor-Β (Tgfβ) Signaling In Calcineurin Inhibitor-Induced Renal Damage, Adaku Uwe
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
With its incorporation into clinical practice in the early 1980s, the class of pharmacological agents known as calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) quickly became the cornerstone of immunosuppressive therapy post-organ transplantation. However, its use is limited by irreversible kidney damage in the form of renal fibrosis. The molecular mechanism by which CNIs induce renal fibrosis remains to be better understood, and to date, there are no specific therapeutic strategies to mitigate this damage. This dilemma presents a critical need to explain mechanisms by which CNIs cause renal damage. Kidneys of patients on chronic CNI therapy show increased expression of the proinflammatory cytokine …
Distributing Transmitters To Maximize Population-Level Representativeness In Automated Radio Telemetry Studies Of Animal Movement, Juliet S. Lamb, Pamela H. Loring, Peter W. C. Paton
Distributing Transmitters To Maximize Population-Level Representativeness In Automated Radio Telemetry Studies Of Animal Movement, Juliet S. Lamb, Pamela H. Loring, Peter W. C. Paton

Telemetry is a powerful and indispensable tool for evaluating wildlife movement and distribution patterns, particularly in systems where opportunities for direct observation are limited. However, the effort and expense required to track individuals often results in small sample sizes, which can lead to biased results if the sample of tracked individuals does not fully capture spatial, temporal, and individual variability within the target population. To better understand the influence of sampling design on results of automated radio telemetry studies, we conducted a retrospective power analysis of very high frequency (VHF) radio telemetry data from the Motus Wildlife Tracking System for …

Speculative Immigration Policy, Matthew Boaz
Speculative Immigration Policy, Matthew Boaz
Scholarly Articles
This Article considers how speculative fiction was wielded by the Trump administration to implement destructive U.S. immigration policy. It analyzes the thematic elements from a particular apocalyptic novel, traces those themes through actual policy implemented by the president, and considers the harm effected by such policies. This Article proposes that the harmful outcomes are not due to the use of speculative fiction, but rather the failure to consider the speculative voices of those who have been historically marginalized within the United States. This Article argues that alternative speculative visions could serve as a platform for radical imagination about future U.S. …
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (Eap) In The Treatment Of Military Service Members With Ptsd And/Or Tbi: A Pilot Study, Kimberly Freisenbruch, Carolyn Rutledge
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (Eap) In The Treatment Of Military Service Members With Ptsd And/Or Tbi: A Pilot Study, Kimberly Freisenbruch, Carolyn Rutledge
College of Health Sciences Posters
Military members, whether active duty, retired, or separated from service, are at increased risk for developing physical and mental disabilities due to their military service, especially if combat was involved. Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) is a therapeutic intervention that uses horses, trained equine therapists, and mental health professionals in a non-riding environment. Horses respond to very slight changes in their environment, and these responses may help to provide insight into how EAP patients communicate, set boundaries, and confront issues created by TBI and PTSD-related injuries.
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the efficacy of equine therapy on military members’ …

Hmm, You Seem Confused! Tracking Interlocutor Confusion For Situated Task-Oriented Hri, Na Li, Robert J. Ross
Articles
Our research seeks to develop a long-lasting and high-quality en- gagement between the user and the social robot, which in turn requires a more sophisticated alignment of the user and the system than is currently commonly available. Close monitoring of inter- locutors’ states, and we argue their confusion state in particular, and adjusting dialogue policies based on this state of confusion is needed for successful joint activity. In this paper, we present an ini- tial study of a human-robot conversation scenarios using a Pepper robot to investigate the confusion states of users. A Wizard-of-Oz (WoZ) HRI experiment is illustrated in …

Predicting Synchronization Of Three Mutually Inhibiting Groups Of Oscillators With Strong Resetting, José M. Amig?, Thiago S. Mosqueiro, Ram?N Huerta
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Neural populations encode sensory information, memory and motor patterns through electro-chemical firings, which propagate throughout the nervous system via synapses, a structure that couples neurons together. A powerful tool to investigate synchronization issues in such systems are the Phase Resetting curves. However these are best suited for brief and small perturbations. Motivated by the observation of strong inhibition in some neural circuits, we investigate a resetting model with similar features to a known neural population called striatum, in which three groups of neurons inhibit themselves. The model is intrinsically based on Kuramoto oscillators, and is analytically treatable. We derive a …
Ortogonal Approach For Haptic Rendering Algorithm Based In Conformal Geometric Algebra, Gabriel Sep?Lveda-Cervantes, Edgar A. Portilla-Flores
Ortogonal Approach For Haptic Rendering Algorithm Based In Conformal Geometric Algebra, Gabriel Sep?Lveda-Cervantes, Edgar A. Portilla-Flores
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This work presents a novel method for haptic rendering contact force and surface properties for virtual objects using the Conformal Geometric Algebra orthogonal decomposition approach. The mathematical representation of geometric primitives along with collision algorithms based on its mathematical properties is presented. The orthogonal decomposition of contact and interaction forces is achieved using the same framework and dynamic properties in both subspaces are rendered simultaneously. Comparing with vector calculus, the Conformal Geometric Algebra (CGA) approach provides an easier and more intuitive way to deal with haptic rendering problems due to its inner properties and a simpler representation of geometric objects …

Box Tree Moth (Cydalima Perspectalis), Kripa Dhakal, Karla M. Addesso
Extension Publications
The box tree moth (BTM), Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is an invasive pest of boxwood (Buxus spp.) causing severe damage to these popular ornamental plants. These plants are popular for their low maintenance, deer resistance, and evergreen foliage. It is a shrub common to almost all landscape environments in the United States. The box tree moth is native to East Asia. It was discovered in Europe in 2007, and since then it has spread rapidly across the continent. In 2018, box tree moth was first detected in North America in Ontario, Canada and in July 2021, the U.S. Department …

The 2021 Student Debates of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) were held at the Annual Meeting in Denver, CO. The event was organized by the Student Debates Subcommittee (SDS) of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC). The theme of the 2021 Student Debates was “Transforming Entomology to Adapt to Global Concerns”, with 3 topics. Each topic had an unbiased introduction and 2 teams. The debate topics were (i) Nonnative insect introduction is an ethical approach for counteracting proliferation and overpopulation of consumers, (ii) What is the best technology to control undesirable insect pests in urban and agricultural settings? and (iii) …
