Mechanosensitive TRPV4 channel plays a dominant role in maintaining [Ca2+] i homeostasis and flow‐sensitive [Ca2+] i signaling in the renal tubule. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) manifests as progressive cyst growth due to cAMP‐dependent fluid secretion along with deficient mechanosensitivity and impaired TRPV4 activity. Here, we tested how regulation of renal TRPV4 function by dietary K+ intake modulates the rate of cystogenesis and mechanosensitive [Ca2+] i signaling in cystic cells of PCK453 rats, a homologous model of human autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD). One month treatment with both high KCl (5% K+) and KB/C (5% K+ with bicarbonate/citrate) diets significantly increased TRPV4 …

High Pulse Pressure Impairs Cerebral Artery Endothelial Function In Young, But Not Old, Mice, Nick R Winder, Emily H Reeve, Elise K Kronquist, Aleena Khurana, Byron Lee, Thuan Nguyen, Grant D Henson, Ashley E Walker

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

One of the hallmarks of vascular aging is increased pulse pressure. This elevated pulse pressure is associated with deleterious effects on cerebral vascular function; however, it is unknown if age modulates the susceptibility to high pulse pressure. To examine the effects of age on the cerebral artery response to pulse pressure, we studied isolated cerebral arteries collected from young (6.1 ± 0.2 mo) and old (26.7 ± 0.5 mo) male C57BL/6 mice. Isolated cerebral arteries were exposed ex vivo to static pressure, low pulse pressure (25 mmHg), and high pulse pressure (50 mmHg). In cerebral arteries from young mice, endothelium-dependent …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

To demonstrate thrombolytic efficacy of a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)-loaded echogenic liposome (TELIP) formulation in a rabbit thrombotic stroke model (the most relevant animal model for evaluation of directed thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke), we sought to develop a means of monitoring thrombus dissolution quantitatively by ultrasound imaging methods. We hypothesized that a gas-free ultrasound contrast agent can be incorporated into blood clots at a concentration that does not affect the tPA-mediated clot dissolution rate, while enabling quantitative assessment of the clot dissolution rate. Clots were formed from a mixture of whole rabbit blood, 1 M calcium chloride, human thrombin …

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurogenetic disorder characterized by intellectual disability and atypical behaviors. AS results from loss of expression of the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase UBE3A from the maternal allele in neurons. Individuals with AS display impaired coordination, poor balance, and gait ataxia. PIEZO2 is a mechanosensitive ion channel essential for coordination and balance. Here, we report that PIEZO2 activity is reduced in Ube3a deficient male and female mouse sensory neurons, a human Merkel cell carcinoma cell line and female human iPSC-derived sensory neurons with UBE3A knock-down, and de-identified stem cell-derived neurons from individuals with AS. We find that loss …

The Microbiome And Its Impact On Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, Florent Malard, Robert R Jenq

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) is a standard curative therapy for a variety of benign and malignant hematological diseases. Previously, patients who underwent alloHCT were at high risk for complications with potentially life-threatening toxicities, including a variety of opportunistic infections as well as acute and chronic manifestations of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), where the transplanted immune system can produce inflammatory damage to the patient. With recent advances, including newer conditioning regimens, advances in viral and fungal infection prophylaxis, and novel GVHD prophylactic and treatment strategies, improvements in clinical outcomes have steadily improved. One modality with great potential that has yet to …

Encouraging Or Guilt-Inducing? An Analysis Of Fitspiration Content And Its Effect On Body Image And Lifestyle Changes, Brenna Mazour

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

More people are acquiring their nutrition and exercise information from social media accounts called fitspiration. Analyses of fitspiration content have found the focus to be on restrictive diets and excessive exercise that’s appearance driven. Although its intent is to inspire its consumers to change their lifestyle, many speculate that it brings upon negative body image and induces guilt. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) has been used to determine why people take part in certain health behaviors, such as diets or exercise regimens posted on fitspiration. TPB shows how the characteristics of social media discourage people to use fitspiration as …

Service Out Under The New Rules Of Court, Ian Mah, Aaron Yoong

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The new Rules of Court 2021 seek to provide a more accessible and efficient justice system. The extensiveness of the overhaul, however, brings with it as much unfamiliarity as excitement. This legislation comment examines the changes in the provisions governing service out of jurisdiction and argues that the textual changes also effect substantive changes to how the law is applied. This comment also explores the related issues on the grant of Mareva injunctions in aid of foreign proceedings under the new Rules of Court 2021.

To create reproducible emotional probes, affective scientists rely on sets of standardized pictures that are normed using subjective ratings of valence and emotional arousal. However, when emotional responses are investigated using neurophysiological measures, it might be more appropriate to select pictures integrating information from normative subjective reports and normative neurophysiological responses. Here, we provide electrophysiological normative responses for 323 emotional pictures (215 from the IAPS) covering a wide range of categories (erotica, romantic, appetizing foods, landscapes, people engaged in mundane activities, household objects, disgusting objects, accidents, sad people, violence, mutilations, and cigarette-related contents). Event-related potentials (ERPs) and subjective ratings of …

Salvation In Hinduism, J. L. Samir Mar 2023

Salvation In Hinduism, J. L. Samir

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

The teachings of Hinduism have existed for thousands of years and continue to influence many cultures, especially those of South Asia. The philosophical teachings of Hinduism are complex and attractive to its adherents; however, the Hindu faith is easily misunderstood by many Westerners. Christianity as a religious institution was mostly developed in the context of a Western worldview. In contrast, Hinduism and its teachings are solely built on an Eastern philosophical and religious system dating back to the eighth century BCE. This article seeks to understand the teachings of salvation as found in the Bhagavad Gita and to contrast those …

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and pulmonary hypertension (PH) are chronic diseases of the pulmonary parenchyma and circulation, respectively, which may coexist, but underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Mutations in the GCN2 (general control nonderepressible 2) gene (EIF2AK4 [eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha kinase 4]) were recently associated with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease. The aim of this study is to explore the involvement of the GCN2/eIF2α (eukaryotic initiation factor 2α) pathway in the development of PH during PF, in both human disease and in a laboratory animal model. Lung tissue from patients with PF with or without PH was collected at the …

Review On Fractal Video And Image Compression Techniques, Baydaa Sh. Abood, Hanan A., Amean S. Al-Safi

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Compression of images process is a step in the image processing. It is concerned with the transmission and storage of digitally created images. Fractal coding is a potential image and video compression approach with good reconstruction fidelity and relatively large compression ratios, because of its simplicity and great performance; fractal image compression (FIC) is a particularly popular approach in image compression applications. However, it has a significant disadvantage in the form of a long encoding time. This is because encoding any small bit necessitates a massive similarity search in the original data As a result; the FIC search time is …

Theory Of A Philanthropic Alliance: The Case Of The Global Alliance For The Future Of Food, Michael Quinn Patton, Ruth Richardson Mar 2023

Theory Of A Philanthropic Alliance: The Case Of The Global Alliance For The Future Of Food, Michael Quinn Patton, Ruth Richardson

The Foundation Review

Different kinds of action entities need different theoretical frameworks. A theory of change hypothesizes how an intervention is expected to achieve desired impacts in the world. A theory of philanthropy articulates a foundation’s role in supporting specific kinds of theories of change. This article extends that analysis to a theory of philanthropic alliance, which explains and hypothesizes how several foundations working together can have greater collective impact than they could working separately. A theory of philanthropy will be contrasted with a theory of philanthropic alliance, using the Global Alliance for the Future of Food to illustrate and illuminate the distinction …

Measuring Dna Modifications With The Comet Assay: A Compendium Of Protocols, Awadhesh N. Jha Mar 2023

Measuring Dna Modifications With The Comet Assay: A Compendium Of Protocols, Awadhesh N. Jha

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The comet assay is a versatile method to detect nuclear DNA damage in individual eukaryotic cells, from yeast to human. The types of damage detected encompass DNA strand breaks and alkali-labile sites (e.g., apurinic/apyrimidinic sites), alkylated and oxidized nucleobases, DNA–DNA crosslinks, UV-induced cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and some chemically induced DNA adducts. Depending on the specimen type, there are important modifications to the comet assay protocol to avoid the formation of additional DNA damage during the processing of samples and to ensure sufficient sensitivity to detect differences in damage levels between sample groups. Various applications of the comet assay have been …

The Indecisions Of 1789: Inconstant Originalism And Strategic Ambiguity, Jed Handelsman Shugerman

Faculty Scholarship

The unitary executive theory relies on the First Congress and an ostensible "Decision of 1789" as an originalist basis for unconditional presidential removal power. In light of new evidence, the First Congress was undecided on any constitutional theory and retreated to ambiguity in order to compromise and move on to other urgent business.

Seila Law's strict separation-of-powers argument depends on indefeasibility (i.e., Congress may not set limits or conditions on the president's power of civil removal). In fact, few members of the First Congress defended or even discussed indefeasibility. Only nine of fifty-four participating representatives explicitly endorsed the presidentialist …

Liver Land: An Exploration Of Liver As Foie Gras In France, Donna Vatnick

Newman Exploration Travel Fund (NEXT) Awards

The Newman Exploration Travel Fund granted me an opportunity to go to France
for two weeks to research the production and consumption of foie gras—one of
the most hotly contested conflicts in culinary ethics—for a chapter in a book I am
writing about the liver. More than any other organ, the liver functions as a totemic
food. The liver sits at the intersection of animal ethics, sustainability, sociopolitical
prestige, and nationalism. Think about the “liver and onions” of the American
working class, the chicken liver pâtés beloved by Jewish migrants, the alleged
healing properties of cod liver, the traditional Chinese …

Touching Tiny Worlds: Nature And Tactility In The Picture Books Of Bruno Munari, Danielle Ridolfi

Newman Exploration Travel Fund (NEXT) Awards

I traveled to Italy in summer 2022 funded by the Newman Exploration Travel Fund
to study the legacy and work Bruno Munari and his pedagogical forerunner Maria
Montessori. Milan, the epicenter of Italian design and Munari’s home until his death,
was my home base. It bustles with speed and dynamism. But like me, Munari loved the natural world, so I took many side trips to smaller towns in the countryside. But to fully understand Munari required that I learn how to find nature even amongst urban chaos.

Juan Luis Segundo’S Hermeneutical Circle: A Continual Hermeneutical Encounter Of The Word And The World, Christiane Joseph C. Jocson Mar 2023

Juan Luis Segundo’S Hermeneutical Circle: A Continual Hermeneutical Encounter Of The Word And The World, Christiane Joseph C. Jocson

Loyola Papers

This paper examines Juan Luis Segundo’s concept of the hermeneutical circle within the framework of liberation theology. It argues that theology must arise from a continual encounter between the Word of God and the concrete realities of the world, especially the experiences of the poor. By engaging the insights of Gustavo Gutiérrez and Paul Ricoeur, the study highlights a dynamic interpretive process in which Scripture and lived experience mutually illuminate each other. Such a hermeneutical approach invites theologians to practice a “feet-on-the-ground” theology that accompanies people in their struggles and seeks transformative understanding.

Ignatius Of Loyola And C.S. Lewis I Dialogue On Discernment, Ramon Mikhail Paulo E. Nicdao

Loyola Papers

This paper places Ignatius of Loyola and C. S. Lewis in dialogue on the theme of spiritual discernment. Through a reading of The Screwtape Letters alongside the Spiritual Exercises, it explores how Ignatian discernment especially consolation and desolation—illuminates the spiritual dynamics portrayed in Lewis’s narrative. By integrating narrative criticism and Ignatian spirituality, the study demonstrates how literary fiction can reveal theological insights and assist contemporary readers in discerning spiritual movements in everyday life.

Children Over-Imitate Adults And Peers More Than Puppets., Roman Stengelin, Rabea Ball, Luke Maurits, Patricia Kanngiesser, Daniel B.M. Haun

School of Psychology

Researchers commonly use puppets in development science. Amongst other things, puppets are employed to reduce social hierarchies between child participants and adult experimenters akin to peer interactions. However, it remains controversial whether children treat puppets like real-world social partners in these settings. This study investigated children's imitation of causally irrelevant actions (i.e., over-imitation) performed by puppet, adult, or child models. Seventy-two German children (AgeRange = 4.6-6.5 years; 36 girls) from urban, socioeconomically diverse backgrounds observed a model retrieving stickers from reward containers. The model performed causally irrelevant actions either in contact with the reward container or not. Children were …
