Removing White Hoods From The Blue Line: A Legislative Solution To White Supremacy In Law Enforcement, Hope Elizabeth Barnes
Removing White Hoods From The Blue Line: A Legislative Solution To White Supremacy In Law Enforcement, Hope Elizabeth Barnes
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd took his final breaths. His death at the hands of multiple Minneapolis police officers was recorded by witnesses and viewed by millions. The public response to Floyd’s death was immediate and powerful. Americans were demanding change on a greater scale than ever before. The problem with policing is not Derek Chauvin, or the Minneapolis Police Department, but rather with the very institution. White supremacy is alive and well in American policing. This Note begins by examining the historic connection between white supremacist groups and law enforcement agencies. This Note then evaluates existing standards of …
Coca-Cola Curses: Hate Speech In A Post-Colonial Context, Brittan Heller
Coca-Cola Curses: Hate Speech In A Post-Colonial Context, Brittan Heller
Michigan Technology Law Review
Hate speech is a contextual phenomenon. What offends or inflames in one context may differ from what incites violence in a different time, place, and cultural landscape. Theories of hate speech, especially Susan Benesch’s concept of “dangerous speech” (hateful speech that incites violence), have focused on the factors that cut across these paradigms. However, the existing scholarship is narrowly focused on situations of mass violence or societal unrest in America or Europe.
This paper discusses how online hate speech may operate differently in a postcolonial context. While hate speech impacts all societies, the global South—Africa in particular—has been sorely understudied. …

Reckoning With “Corporeal And Mental Disabilities”: The Bureaucracy Of Immigrant Disease Management In Early-To-Mid Nineteenth Century America, Vivek K. Rallabandi
Student Publications
This paper explores how the American bureaucratic apparatus during the early-to-mid nineteenth century dealt with immigrants who carried risks of physical and mental illness. Though previous studies have discretely dealt with physical and mental illnesses that immigrants during this period carried, this paper takes an integrated approach, arguing that these two elements should be viewed in conjunction with one another.

Positive And Relaxed Selective Pressures Have Both Strongly Influenced The Evolution Of Cryonotothenioid Fishes During Their Radiation In The Freezing Southern Ocean, Kevin T. Bilyk, Xuan Zhuang, Chiara Papetti
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Evolution in the chronic cold of the Southern Ocean has had a profound influence on the physiology of cryonotothenioid fishes. However, the suite of genetic changes underlying the physiological gains and losses in these fishes is still poorly surveyed. By identifying the genomic signatures of selection, this study aims to identify the functional classes of genes that have been changed following two major physiological transitions: the onset of freezing temperatures and the loss of hemoproteins. Looking at the changes that followed the onset of freezing temperatures, positive selective pressure was found among a set of broadly acting gene regulatory factors, …
Deep Learning Prediction And Its Application In Antimicrobial Resistance, Yiqing Wang
Deep Learning Prediction And Its Application In Antimicrobial Resistance, Yiqing Wang
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat. It happens when bacteria or other pathogens evolve to resist antibiotics. The relevant infections would cause at least 50,000 deaths yearly in Europe and the United States alone1. To combat the crisis, I developed a data-driven theme for quick and accurate detection of bacterial resistance to a wide range of antibiotics. We utilized statistical approaches and developed a series of novel and rigorous models to tackle the problem of antibiotic resistance.
We proposed a deep learning-based Pan-Antibiotic Resistance Prediction model (PARP). This model enabled AMR prediction for a wide range of …

Achieving The Achievable: Realistic Labor Law Reform, Leonard Bierman, Rafael Gely, William B. Gould Iv
Achieving The Achievable: Realistic Labor Law Reform, Leonard Bierman, Rafael Gely, William B. Gould Iv
Missouri Law Review
A common reprise among labor activists and scholars has been that for the fortunes of labor to change, the law must change. Prompted perhaps by a seeming surge in labor movement activity over the past few years, including headline-grabbing strikes and recent union victories at several U.S. Starbucks locations, various labor law activists and scholars have called to seize the moment and proposed the enactment of comprehensive labor law reform. We argue in this Article that broad-scale labor law reform is unlikely to be enacted by the current U.S. Congress or even have all its provisions pass muster when potentially …
Effects Of Actin-Destabilizing Drugs On Motor Function In Drosophila Melanogaster, Caden Sullivan
Effects Of Actin-Destabilizing Drugs On Motor Function In Drosophila Melanogaster, Caden Sullivan
Honors Theses
Actin dynamics influence many cellular processes including neural connectivity and function. One way to better understand and study the regulation of these dynamics is to manipulate actin dynamics and observe the effects in motor function as a proxy to changes on the neuromuscular junctions in developing neural tissue. On that line, this investigation hypothesized that changing the actin dynamics during development via drug manipulation results in observable effects in locomotion. One of the common actin regulatory drugs used throughout the literature includes Latrunculin A, which was used in this study. Methods included applying this actin destabilizing drug on developing wildtype …
Computational Investigation Of Porphyrin-Based Host Design For Anions And Ion Pairs, Symphony Hill
Computational Investigation Of Porphyrin-Based Host Design For Anions And Ion Pairs, Symphony Hill
Honors Theses
Little research has heretofore been devoted to studying the binding interactions between porphyrin-based molecular hosts and anions or ion pairs. Such interactions could be important in synthesizing molecules capable of detecting, binding, extracting, and transporting ions of biological, environmental, and industrial significance. With this in mind, computational studies of nine different porphyrin hosts were performed to examine the structural and binding properties of each molecule and potential ion guests. Using the Spartan computational chemistry software, each porphyrin was modeled and binding was tested with a number of ions of different shapes and sizes. Data was then collected regarding the distances …

Neurosurgery Articles
Purpose: Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive, image-guided, cytoreductive procedure to treat recurrent glioblastoma. This study implemented dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) methods and employed a model selection paradigm to localize and quantify post-LITT blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability in the ablation vicinity. Serum levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), a peripheral marker of increased BBB permeability, were measured.
Methods: Seventeen patients were enrolled in the study. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, serum NSE was measured preoperatively, 24 hours postoperatively, and at two, eight, 12, and 16 weeks postoperatively, depending on postoperative adjuvant treatment. Of the 17 patients, …

Video Games And The First Amendment, Eli Pales
Video Games And The First Amendment, Eli Pales
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
The video game industry is massive, with an annual revenue of $180 billion worldwide; $60 billion of that in America alone. For context, the industry’s size is greater than that of the movie, book, and music industries combined. Yet, despite this market dominance, the video game industry is relatively new. Only in the 2011 decision of Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association did the Supreme Court extend First Amendment protection to games. Still, the Court failed to define the scope of the game medium. As understood by an average person, a video game could be something as simple as Pac-Man or …
Neuronal Glutamate Transporters Mediate Stereotypic Reward-Based Behaviors, Jaci Yong
Neuronal Glutamate Transporters Mediate Stereotypic Reward-Based Behaviors, Jaci Yong
Psychology
Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by obsessions (uncontrollable and recurring thoughts), and compulsions (behaviors that one has the urge to repeat several times). One of the genes carrying non-functional mutations in OCD is Slc1a1, the gene that encodes the neuronal glutamate transporter EAAC1. However, we still have an incomplete understanding of how EAAC1 contributes to the onset of compulsivity in OCD-like behaviors. EAAC1 is abundantly expressed in the striatum, the input nucleus of the basal ganglia implicated with compulsivity and reward. Here, we use a series of behavioral assays to determine whether and how reward-based …

Human Rights, Trans Rights, Prisoners’ Rights: An International Comparison, Tom Butcher
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
In this Note, I conduct an international comparison of the state of trans prisoners’ rights to explore how different national legal contexts impact the likelihood of achieving further liberation through appeals to human rights ideals. I examine the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Argentina, and Costa Rica and show the degree to which a human rights framework has been successful thus far in advancing trans prisoners’ rights. My analysis also indicates that the degree to which a human rights framework is likely to be successful in the future varies greatly between countries. In countries that are hesitant …

Social Media’S Effect On U.S. Investor Behavior, Emma Barrett
Social Media’S Effect On U.S. Investor Behavior, Emma Barrett
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
Over the past few decades, the world, particularly the United States has seen dramatic growth in the presence and popularity of social media. So much so that it now plays a fundamental role in the majority of people’s everyday lives. It has become an essential tool for news and information consumption, allowing people to access opinions, posts, and current event information faster and easier than ever before. Consequently, if social media is touching every corner of life, it must play a role in investing and the financial markets. In this study, I examine the role social media plays when it …

A Semiotic Analysis Of Two Linear A Inscribed Ladles, Leah Rosen
A Semiotic Analysis Of Two Linear A Inscribed Ladles, Leah Rosen
Honors Projects
On the peak sanctuary Agio Georgios on the island of Kythera, and at the archaeological site of Troullos on Crete, two Linear A (LA) inscribed ladles have been found. They are unique in that they are the only inscribed Minoan ladles found to date. Because inscription is not a common feature of Minoan ladles, the purpose of these two inscriptions is of particular interest. However, Linear A, the writing system of the Minoans, remains undeciphered and is unlikely to be translated for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, other approaches to studying Linear A inscriptions can still provide insight into …
Faces Of Faith: Monastic Identity And Protestant Theology In The Swiss Reformation, Kevin O'Gorman
Faces Of Faith: Monastic Identity And Protestant Theology In The Swiss Reformation, Kevin O'Gorman
Honors Theses
Religious orders were ever-present in medieval life. Their influence was not limited just to the pulpit and the physical area around monasteries but extended into the daily life of entire kingdoms. Each religious community was unique in the interpretation and expression of its Rule of life, both between and within orders. During the Reformation, religious communities faced pressure from newly converted Protestant authorities alongside theological conversations within their own walls. New Protestant theologies carried with them anti-monastic ideas that challenged religious communities to fundamentally reexamine their lives. Nowhere were these choices as complicated as in Switzerland, where monks and nuns …
Determining The Role Of Propionate And Sigb On Benzalkonium Chloride Resistance In Listeria Monocytogenes, Emma C. Schaefer
Determining The Role Of Propionate And Sigb On Benzalkonium Chloride Resistance In Listeria Monocytogenes, Emma C. Schaefer
Honors Theses
Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a deadly food borne pathogen that causes listeriosis infection in humans with a high mortality rate. L. monocytogenes can form biofilms in food processing environments and become resistant to antimicrobial agents such as benzalkonium chloride (BC) and other quaternary ammonium chlorides (QACs). BC is used for cleaning and disinfection of food processing areas and is known to disrupt cell membranes of L. monocytogenes, causing cytosol leakage and the degradation of proteins and nucleic acids. Previous research shows that QAC resistance is associated with the upregulation of certain efflux pump genes (mdrL, brcABC, …
Wild Women Of Anatolia: The Critical Construct Validity Of The Liberation Of Women In Turkey, Sedef Ozoguz
Wild Women Of Anatolia: The Critical Construct Validity Of The Liberation Of Women In Turkey, Sedef Ozoguz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Feminist, sexuality and social psychology researchers studying women’s liberation in Turkey have solely focused on freedoms denied, outlining freedoms from gendered political, institutional and intimate constraints such as domestic violence, without much attention to freedoms desired, such as freedom to dream. Following Fromm’s (1941) conceptualization of freedom as freedom from restrictions placed on one and freedom to do what one wants to do authentically, my work engages in the critical construct validity (Fine & Torre, 2019) of the liberation of Turkish women, troubling, questioning and critiquing the assumptions typically made about the construct and offering an alternative way of studying …
Horizontal Transmission Of Salmonella Typhimurium Among German Cockroaches And Possible Mechanisms, Madison Anne Mond
Horizontal Transmission Of Salmonella Typhimurium Among German Cockroaches And Possible Mechanisms, Madison Anne Mond
Honors Thesis
Cockroaches, including the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), are common urban pests that have been linked epidemiologically and experimentally to the transmission of bacteria that cause enteric disease in humans and animals, such as the widespread pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. While recent strides have been made in understanding the mechanisms and dynamics of Salmonella infection of the cockroach gut, much about this vector-pathogen relationship remains unknown. A particular knowledge gap is understanding the ecology of how S. Typhimurium is acquired, maintained, and spread by cockroaches. The behavioral ecology of German cockroaches is unique among insect vectors. They closely share shelter …
Validation Of A Brief Measure For Complicated Grief Specific To Reproductive Loss, Cara Buskmiller, Kathryn R Grauerholz, Jennifer Bute, Maria Brann, Michaelene Fredenburg, Jerrie S Refuerzo
Validation Of A Brief Measure For Complicated Grief Specific To Reproductive Loss, Cara Buskmiller, Kathryn R Grauerholz, Jennifer Bute, Maria Brann, Michaelene Fredenburg, Jerrie S Refuerzo
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Objective
Complicated grief reactions follow some pregnancy outcomes, like miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, infant death, selective reduction, or termination of pregnancy. Stigma can delay treatment and worsen outcomes. Screening tools such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale detect complicated grief poorly, and specific tools for prolonged or complicated grief after a reproductive loss are cumbersome. In this study, a five-item questionnaire to detect complicated grief after reproductive loss of any type was designed and preliminary validated.
Methods
A questionnaire patterned after the extensively validated Brief Grief Questionnaire (BGQ) was created by a group of physicians and lay advocates to employ …
