Verathon is aware of this risk and has developed a proprietary “Four-step method” to mitigate it. This project aimed to reduce injuries related to GlideScope video laryngoscopy by providing first-year nurse anesthesiologists at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with didactic and simulation education related to GlideScope video laryngoscopy and injury prevention. Didactic education was provided via a pre-recorded PowerPoint presentation. Simulation education was provided with the GlideScope and airway trainer manikins. The participants completed an identical 8-question pre-test and post-test to assess for knowledge gain …

Development Of Tom In Autistic Youth: The Potential Impact Of Language, Jaydel Hernandez Apr 2023

Development Of Tom In Autistic Youth: The Potential Impact Of Language, Jaydel Hernandez

Honors Scholar Theses

Theory of Mind (ToM) includes the ability to attribute mental states (e.g., “happy”, “confused”) to oneself and others (Wimmer & Perner, 1983). Typically developing (TD) children demonstrate high performance on ToM tasks, while children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may encounter difficulties with ToM (Peterson et al., 2005). The role of language in ToM development is unclear, as Perner et al. (1998) claimed that school-age children’s language levels did not impact their ToM ability but did not formally assess language. However, de Villiers and Pyers (2002) reported relationships between ToM and complex syntax. The current study elaborates on the existing …

Comparison Of Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Between Human Ependymoma And Mouse Models Of Human Ependymoma, Emily Hutchinson Apr 2023

Comparison Of Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Between Human Ependymoma And Mouse Models Of Human Ependymoma, Emily Hutchinson

Honors Scholar Theses

Ependymoma (EPN) is a group of central nervous system tumors most commonly observed in young children. EPN is characterized by high intratumoral cellular heterogeneity meaning the cell population within a single tumor is extremely diverse, which makes understanding the disease more complex. Furthermore, different subtypes of EPN have been identified as more or less favorable in terms of prognosis. For example, posterior fossa group A (PF-A) and supratentorial EPN with ZFTA-RELA fusions (ST-RELA) have been identified as the more aggressive groups in young children. Mouse models have been established to further understand the cellular profile of human ependymoma tumors. Much …

Potential Use Of The Gel Extract Of Butterfly Pea Flower As Topical Therapy To Prevent Photodamage By Downregulating Tnf-Α And Caspase-3 Expression Levels In Uvb-Exposed Rats, Elvana Cahyani, Agung Putra, Prasetyowati Subchan

Makara Journal of Health Research

Background: Prolonged exposure to UVB radiation causes DNA damage in skin cells by raising the levels of reactive oxygen species, resulting in the production of inflammatory factors and skin issues. Plant extracts are frequently used to counteract photodamage due to their antioxidant properties. One example is the floral extract of the butterfly pea plant, which contains flavonoid antioxidants. However, the effect of the extract on inflammatory factors is unknown. This study investigated how tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and caspase-3 expression changed when a butterfly pea flower extract gel was applied topically to UVB-exposed animals.

Methods: Experimental and control …

Physics

Shallow estuarine habitats are globally undergoing rapid changes due to climate change and anthropogenic influences, resulting in spatiotemporal shifts in distribution and habitat extent. Yet, scientists and managers do not always have rapidly available data to track habitat changes in real-time. In this study, we apply a novel and a state-of-the-art image segmentation machine learning technique (DeepLab) to two years of high-resolution drone-based imagery of a marine flowering plant species (eelgrass, a temperate seagrass). We apply the model to eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadows in the Morro Bay estuary, California, an estuary that has undergone large eelgrass declines and the subsequent …

Synthesis Of 2-Bromo-6-Alkylaminopyridines, 2,6-Dialkylaminopyridines, And Tren Based Ligands, Stephanie E. Carter

Honors College Theses

Extended metal atom chains (EMAC) are multimetallic complexes that feature a linear metal chain with metal-metal bonds surrounded by stabilizing ligand molecules. When EMACs are formed with paramagnetic metal ions, unique magnetic properties can be derived from direct metal to metal communication. The challenge is that EMAC complexes are challenging to synthesize due to the inherent weakness of most M-M bonds and the specificity of the ligands required to stabilize EMACs. In prior work by the Guillet group, the silyl aminopyridine (SAP) ligands were observed to stabilize very unique triiron complexes, but they were inherently unstable. In other work, scaffolded …

Bioinformatic Analysis Of Mirna Mechanisms In Circadian Rhythm Using A Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Model, Layton F. Coursey

Honors College Theses

MicroRNAs are noncoding RNAs found in cells and the bloodstream, which help to maintain proper protein production and overall gene expression1. Typically, microRNAs bind to messenger RNA (mRNA) in the cell cytoplasm, acting as post-transcriptional regulators, and either degrade or repress mRNA2. Due to microRNAs playing a vital role in gene expression by repressing protein production of target genes, if they are underexpressed then the protein it regulates could be overexpressed as a result.

miRNAs have the potential to be biomarkers for numerous neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegeneration can be seen in many forms such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s (AD), Huntington’s Disease (HD), …

Glioma is a rare brain tumor with a poor prognosis. Familial glioma is a subset of glioma with a strong genetic predisposition that accounts for approximately 5% of glioma cases. We performed whole-genome sequencing on an exploratory cohort of 203 individuals from 189 families with a history of familial glioma and an additional validation cohort of 122 individuals from 115 families. We found significant enrichment of rare deleterious variants of seven genes in both cohorts, and the most significantly enriched gene was HERC2 (P = 0.0006). Furthermore, we identified rare noncoding variants in both cohorts that were predicted to …

Understanding Groundwater Flow In A Saturated Buffer Zone ( Sbz ) Using Numerical Models: Case Study Of T 3 Site, Mclean County, Central Illinois, Nnaemeka Henry Nsude

Theses and Dissertations

Loss of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, from agricultural lands in the Midwest affects farm productivity and environmental quality. Nutrient runoff from lands discharged into streams degrades the aquatic ecosystem through eutrophication and subsequent hypoxic conditions. The presence of nitrogen also threatens the potability of numerous aquifer bodies globally due to their high solubility in water. To tackle this problem, best management practices such as Saturated Buffer Zone (SBZ) are implemented to reduce nitrogen from nitrate-laden tile water from agricultural lands before being discharged into streams. Groundwater flow and interactions at SBZ are not well understood. To aid the …

Narrowing The Achievement Gap By Increasing Student Opportunities In An Outdoor Project-Based Learning Environment, Britney Christensen Apr 2023

Narrowing The Achievement Gap By Increasing Student Opportunities In An Outdoor Project-Based Learning Environment, Britney Christensen

Masters Projects

The nation’s lack of student achievement on standardized tests is a result of the insufficient number of opportunities a student has to interact with their environment. Research indicates racial and economic disparities limit the number of chances these groups have to build the wide range of background knowledge needed to support the academic demands in the classroom. As a result, their performances show a widening of the achievement gap. Therefore, this project speaks to perspectives centered around constructivism as a way to explain how students acquire knowledge over time. The author contends that reading diverse texts, writing for different purposes, …

This review article discusses the potential of hyperpolarized (HP) 13C magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) as a noninvasive technique for identifying altered metabolism in various cancer types. Hyperpolarization significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio for the identification of 13C-labeled metabolites, enabling dynamic and real-time imaging of the conversion of [1-13C] pyruvate to [1-13C] lactate and/or [1-13C] alanine. The technique has shown promise in identifying upregulated glycolysis in most cancers, as compared to normal cells, and detecting successful treatment responses at an earlier stage than multiparametric MRI in breast and prostate cancer patients. The review provides a concise overview of the applications …

Eucalyptus Essential Oil: A Safety Assessment And Causality Evaluation Of Published Case Reports, Cecile Bascoul Apr 2023

Eucalyptus Essential Oil: A Safety Assessment And Causality Evaluation Of Published Case Reports, Cecile Bascoul

Oxford ICSB

Eucalyptus essential oil (EO) and preparations containing eucalyptus EO have been used in traditional medicine for centuries for the treatment of respiratory illnesses such as cold, influenza and sinus congestion. Research, including clinical trials, has been carried out to evaluate the efficacy of eucalyptus alleviating symptoms of such conditions. However, eucalyptus EO and preparations with eucalyptus EO have also been associated with rare cases of CNS depression and seizures. The case reports reviewed showed evidence of CNS depression and/or seizure in patients from all ages (<1 to 74 year-old) with different doses of eucalyptus EO (0.18 mL to 1000 mL). Most of the adverse events were in children; some of them reacting to small doses (4 drops of EO or about 0.24 mL), ingested, inhaled or after topical application. Most children who developed seizures did not have a history of seizures before the event. The main constituent of eucalyptus EO is 1,8-cineole (about 65% to 84% 1,8 cineole for eucalyptus globulus EO, one of the most commonly used eucalyptus species in commercially available …

Nature Or Natures Or Natural Laws? Some Comments On C.S. Lewis's Use Of The Concept Of Nature In Miracles, A Preliminary Study, Thomas Storck

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

Now, although Lewis, of course, did not think that nature was a closed system inaccessible to any action from outside it, and in fact, his entire book was written to argue the opposite point of view, I hope to show that this continual usage of nature as “total system” prejudices the argument against miracles, at least subconsciously, by suggesting that nature is a closed system, or at least a system which ordinarily is blocked to outside entry or interference. Thus, David Hume’s unfortunately classic definition— “A miracle is a violation of the laws of nature . . .”6—is premised on …

"The Packed Reality Of Heaven": C.S. Lewis's Imaginative Re-Education Of The Modern Pilgrim, Monika B. Hilder

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

How to think of Heaven then, which Lewis says “is, by definition, outside our experience,” when the fact is that “all intelligible descriptions must be of things within our experience” is a question that Lewis took seriously, especially since the scriptural imagery “[a]t first sight . . . chill[ed], rather than awake[ned], [his] desire.” He asked how a “typical modern” like himself might interpret the heavenly concept of glory. The first idea of fame suggested to him hellish competition; the second idea of brightness suggested the “ridiculous” image of becoming “a kind of living electric light bulb.” Indeed, he contends …
