Infants demonstrate object permanence understanding during violation of expectation tasks. These tasks consist of expected (e.g., ball stops at solid wall) and unexpected (e.g., ball rolls through solid wall) events. Infants look longer at the unexpected event as opposed to the expected event (Perez & Feigenson, 2021). Similarly, studies have shown that dogs present increased looking times during unexpected object permanence tasks (Pattison et al., 2010). In the current study, dogs participated in a violation of expectation task which investigated object permanence understanding. To conduct this study, dogs were positioned in front of a stage with a concealed opening in …

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor that regulates the effects of estrogenic, androgenic, and antiandrogenic systems. BPA is extensively used in the manufacturing of hard plastics leading to detectable BPA levels in body fluids of humans and animals indicating that BPA exposure is ubiquitous and has potential health hazards. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of adolescent exposure to low-dose BPA via oral ingestion in water on behavior and neuronal morphology in intact adolescent male rats. The dose given, a concentration equivalent to 40/µg/kg/day, is lower than daily safe-dose levels set by the United States Environmental …

The Effect Of Postpartum Depression On An Infant’S Language And Cognitive Development, Alana Reilly
Academic Festival
Has it ever crossed your mind how terrifying and scary it would be for a mother-to-be to feel like a failure and constantly experience sadness and guilt? What if she felt as if she could not take care of her own child after birth? And what would the effect of these depressive thoughts be on the infant?
Postpartum depression is an illness and type of depression that can affect mothers after childbirth. They can experience extreme feelings of sadness, anxiety, changes in sleep, appetite, and energy, along with bonding issues with the baby. As research suggests, one impact of postpartum …
Optimization Of A Dna Extraction Protocol For Meiofaunal Identification, Lilly D. Bove, Joanna Coreno
Optimization Of A Dna Extraction Protocol For Meiofaunal Identification, Lilly D. Bove, Joanna Coreno
Academic Festival
Meiofauna are a diverse group of benthic invertebrates that range between 0.04 mm and 1mm in size. They represent 24 of the 35 animal phyla and are ideal for biomonitoring. Their fast population turnover means that community composition can indicate anthropogenic influence and environmental health. The long-term goal of this project is to determine if visual identification of meiofauna at the level of phyla is sufficient to investigate community changes along a disturbed shoreline (Seaside Park; Bridgeport, CT); or if it is necessary to identify lower taxonomic levels via DNA metabarcoding. The latter would allow for the identification of taxa …

The Impact Of Brief Animal Assisted Therapy Dog Interactions On College Student Stress And Self-Efficacy Levels, Savannah Giordano, Julian Percoco
Academic Festival
The aim of the current study was to examine the potential benefits of dog therapy programs on student stress levels on a college campus. While these programs have become increasingly popular there is little evidence on the effectiveness of animal centered activities. We compared the differences on three types of assessments related to stress levels (e.g., Self-Efficacy Scale, Perceived Stress Scale and relative changes in stress hormone levels (cortisol)) for college students before and after interacting with therapy dogs for 10 minutes. Saliva samples were collected using Salimetrics’ Salivabio Oral Swab (SOS) method from student participants 15 minutes after arrival …

The Spectrum Of Human Nature From Anthroposophy To Radical Difference From God In Owen Barfield, C. S. Lewis, And Karl Barth, Stephen Thorson
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Among many achievements, Barth redefined the problem of objectivity in theology as well as proposed a theological anthropology of continuing influence. The question of objectivity also exercised the minds of C. S. Lewis and his close friend, Owen Barfield, during that same decade, leading to their own versions of idealist anthropology. Although Lewis claimed that the resulting epistolary controversy between them was a “major turning point” in his life,6 scholars of Lewis’s life and works, including biographers, have largely ignored this hint, and skipped this part of his intellectual conversion.7 Their debate began over objectivity in human knowledge, especially in …

The Quest Of Bleheris, C. S. Lewis
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Written between May and October 1916, The Quest of Bleheris is an unfinished narrative romance of seventeen chapters concerning the adventures of a young knight, Bleheris, as he moves from the relative safety of civilized society to the challenges and dangers of a wilderness experience. At almost 20,000 words, Bleheris was Lewis’s first sustained effort at prose fiction.

For my capstone topic I will be writing a bioethics paper discussing the potential uses and social implications of genetic editing. Editing the human genome is a controversial topic spanning across many different circles from the science community to health professionals to the public and religious groups up to international legislation. I will begin by providing background on the process of CRISPER/cas9 which is the technology that makes genetic editing possible. Next it is important to discuss the current uses and potential uses of the technology as well as the legislative response. Currently the laws in place focus primarily on …

The Impact Of Nutrition On The Mental And Physical Health Of Young Adults, Dareena El-Far
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
Upon close examination by nutritional professionals, concern has arisen regarding the typical contents of a young adult diet. In terms of the rate at which young adults choose to consume nutritionally-dense food items, the rate at which nutrition-deficient junk food items are chosen over the former is significantly higher. Among further examinations of this issue by researchers, it has become evident that the nutritional decisions made by young adults are increasingly associated with several social, commercial, mental, educational, and economic influences. As a consequence of these factors, research has uncovered a connection between the consumption of a poor diet and …

Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy in the world and the leading cause of female cancer-related mortality. Several ways for combating this entity have been proposed, but a significant and effective cure has yet to be established. Natural compounds originating from plants, including Citrus limon, are employed as alternative cancer treatments. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the immunomodulation activity of Citrus limon’s extract against breast cancer inci-dence in the mouse model. An in vivo study using female BALB/c mice served as the basis for this investigation. Four groups of eight-week-old mice, each weighing 20 grams, were randomized. …

Extraintestinal Salmonellosis Unmasked In A Parotid Mass, Kahmalia-Kalee Sada
North Texas GME Research Forum 2023
Salmonella infection can cause a wide range of presentations, predominantly gastrointestinal but occasionally with cardiovascular or other extraintestinal manifestations. The diagnosis of extraintestinal salmonellosis requires a high degree of clinical suspicion and should be considered in patients with deep-seated abscesses. [1]. Typically, these types of infections, are extremely rare, and when revealed are typically seen in the immunocompromised patient with chronic illness, HIV, or Hepatitis. While the incidence of nontyphoid salmonellosis is estimated at over 2 million cases annually, extraintestinal manifestations account for less than 1% of cases. Studies have revealed that individuals with diabetes have risk for salmonellosis due …

In the Age of the Enlightenment, women of nobility in Spain began to gain some authority to make important contributions to society in various ways. Through examining primary and secondary sources, and records from museums and archives in Madrid, we are able to gain insight into the political, social, and scientific achievements of these women. By breaking away from male-dominated spaces, these women's groups had the opportunity to hold their own power and make change in their community. This research will explore the scientific contributions of the Junta de Damas with the Real Inclusa de Madrid while emphasizing the importance …

Riodinid Butterfly Fauna (Lepidoptera) Of The Cosñipata Region, Peru: Annotated Checklist, Community Structure, And Contrast With Lycaenidae, Gerardo Lamas, Jon D. Turner, Michael L. Mcinnis, Robert K. Robbins
Insecta Mundi
A team of experienced lepidopterists sampled the butterfly fauna of Peru’s Cosñipata Region from 400 to 4,000 m elevation for more than a decade (7,440 field person-hours) and supplemented this sample with data from museum specimens and the scientific literature. An annotated checklist of Cosñipata Riodinidae (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) documents 398 species, which represents 29% of the world Riodinidae fauna. For each, it lists sample abundance, adult behavior, elevation, and temporal distribution. In the fieldwork sample, 75 species (20.9%) were sampled once and 39 (9.8%) were not encountered (collected or imaged by others). A riodinid species of median abundance was sampled …
