Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Totemism is a belief in an animal or plant’s guiding spirit that is linked to a person’s character and destiny. Totemism manifests itself in tattoos as body decoration and symbols of hope, such as Yakuza tattoos (irezumi). This research aims to reveal the representation and meaning of totemistic irezumi worn by three Yakuza characters (Kazuma Kiryuu, Akira Nishikiyama, and Goro Majima) in two Yakuza-themed game series: Yakuza 0 (2015) and Yakuza Kiwami 1 (2016). These games provided the primary data in the form of images and conversations. Ricoeur’s hermeneutic theory was applied to examine the data, along with …

The Rise And Fall Of Daca: An Audio Series, Dulce Garcia
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The history of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, commonly known as DACA, is a tumultuous one. In 2012, when President Obama created DACA through an executive order it gave relief to hundreds of thousands of people who were brought to the United States as children without their knowledge, giving them a range of benefits like never before including a work permit, a social security number, protection from deportation, and others. Yet, these last ten years the program has stood on shaky grounds with constant court battles canceling, reinstating or partially rolling the program. This audio series will give a deep …
Spatialisation Of Non-Linear Narratives Through Intertextual Reading, Ferry Gunawan
Spatialisation Of Non-Linear Narratives Through Intertextual Reading, Ferry Gunawan
ARSNET
This paper explores spatial strategies created through a non-linear continuity of narratives, instead of chronological ones. It employs the creation of multiple narrative possibilities by spatialisation mechanism as a new way of reading an intertextual narrative. This research explores different themes of spatial narratives based on the book Penguin Hate Stuff by Greg Stones. The study utilises the mechanism of spatial manipulation using horizontal and vertical axis towards the episodic events portrayed in the book, questioning the original intertextuality of the book's text, and opening up multiple re-interpretations. The explorations of non-linear narratives demonstrate strategies of spatialisation based on the …
Architecture And The Subconscious, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
Architecture And The Subconscious, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET
The subconscious thinking governs the way the built environment is experienced and organised by its inhabitants. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET explores how our subconscious thinking provides alternative spatial narrative and design methods. The explorations in this issue highlight the different conditions and realms of the subconscious, as well as the various ways of learning and making driven by subjective subconsciousness. These inquiries offer deep thought on how the focus on subconscious thinking reveals hidden experiences and knowledge of architecture, as well as celebrating speculations and open-ended qualities that allow architecture to evolve.

Learning From Nature: Exploring Systems Of Plants And Animals For Form Generation, Arnis Rochma Harani
ARSNET
This paper aims to explain learning strategies for deconstructing and reconstructing natural objects as hidden knowledge in nature for application in design studio pedagogy, particularly in developing architectural forms. Current discourse on nature-based architecture learning often places nature as a form of metaphor and analogy. This article presents various results of tracing natural systems, especially plants and animals, as a basis for learning architecture in the Basic Design studio at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro. The implementation of the design studio was conducted by groups of students who explore different types of plant and animal objects. …
Amongst The Trails: Analysis Of A Small Predator Location Survey, Jesse Laseter
Amongst The Trails: Analysis Of A Small Predator Location Survey, Jesse Laseter
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Small predators, despite their size, play pivotal roles in ecosystem balance. Primarily, through their predation of herbivores, they indirectly benefit native plant communities. By reducing the damage from herbivory, herbaceous plants have a higher likelihood to thrive and proliferate. This is crucial in the restoration of Missouri glades. However, for small predators to achieve this, they rely heavily on their ability to navigate through their environment. One factor that may influence their ability to traverse their environment is recreational trails. Trails can cause habitat fragmentation by disconnecting one larger area into two. Trails also have significantly different microclimate than the …

C. S. Lewis As Spiritual Mentor By Mail, David C. Downing
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Lewis’ published correspondence provides a kind of autobiography-in-progress, and it offers a revealing glimpse of his opinions as a literary and culture critic. But perhaps the letters of most permanent value are those which Lewis saw as a part of his Christian vocation: his insights to friends, casual acquaintances and complete strangers about questions of theology, faith, spiritual formation, and even marriage and family relationships. In his later years, letter-writing became a burdensome task for Lewis. In one note, he mentions that he had composed thirty-five letters that day. In another, he mentions that he had just spent nine hours …

C. S. Lewis: Christian Educator For A Post-Christian Era, Mark A. Pike
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
According to Spears and Loomis, “Education is no longer understood in terms of training that enables us to pursue a true conception of reality. Formerly, education was conceived as a tool by which we came to properly understand our humanity, ourselves and our right role within society,” but this is often no longer the case. This essay will explore the implications of this important change for schooling, leadership, teaching, and learning. in the twenty-first century. In the post-Christian phase of our culture it has been asserted – plausibly – that education has in general ceased to have the aim of …

Recasting The Discarded Image: C. S. Lewis On The Modern Side, Sanford Schwartz
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Excerpt: It is then something of a simplification to see Lewis as a “dinosaur” out of step with his own time. As a modern apologist he managed to retain the framework of the multi-level medieval model, but only with the assistance of credible modern sources that challenge the hegemony of the one-story “developmental” model of evolutionary naturalism. The threetier hierarchy – material, organic, spiritual – that arose out of the turnof- the-century revolt against positivism provided a means of exposing the reductive tendencies of the naturalistic orientation and affirming a traditional conception of the Supernatural that transcends natural order. The …

Diabetes mellitus, a condition in which the body's ability to produce insulin is impaired, and osteoarthritis (OA), a painful degeneration of joint cartilage, are both serious conditions that affect millions of people in the United States (U.S.). Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative condition of the joint cartilage, affecting mainly the older population. The purpose of this paper is to find a connection, if any, between diabetes and osteoarthritis and if either condition can predispose an individual to the other. Not only can this review help to explain the co-existence of these two diseases, but it can also be used to …

Selenium (Se) contamination of public lands and water is a result of irrigated agriculture and mining activities in areas rich in Se geologic deposits. Pariette Draw is part of the northern Colorado Plateau and is an area of concern for Se contamination in the Pariette Wetlands. Pariette Wetlands, a wetland built in the 1970s to provide wildlife habitat, is distinguished by its arid climate and a short growing season of hot dry summers followed by cold winters with several months below freezing. An understanding of how Se is mobilized and removed within the wetland will provide management strategies that minimize …
