The Theory Of Shot Composition Applied To Various Genres Of Film, Elizabeth Scott
The Theory Of Shot Composition Applied To Various Genres Of Film, Elizabeth Scott
Senior Honors Theses
I am fascinated by the composition of shots in movies, specifically as it applies to the various different genres. However, there seems to be a lack of research into this particular area of the theory of composition. In that case, I am planning to research the history and theory of shot composition as it applies to films throughout the history of film and into modern times. This will be supplemented by my own experience in the Fall of 2022 where I will be a Director of Photography for four individual films of varying genres as well as by a film …
Recognizing The Unique Health Care Needs Of Pregnant Afghan Refugees, Catherine Mcelroy
Recognizing The Unique Health Care Needs Of Pregnant Afghan Refugees, Catherine Mcelroy
Senior Honors Theses
Healthcare providers in the US, specifically in areas of high refugee resettlement, have recently been overwhelmed by the recent influx of Afghanistan refugees. This increased demand has exposed the lack of culturally competent care that healthcare workers are able to provide, leading to the question: How can healthcare providers in the United States (US) recognize the unique health care needs of pregnant Afghan refugees? This research paper addresses the question through the collection of previous research surrounding medical care for pregnant Afghan refugees already in databases. First, background information was obtained about the situation from which pregnant Afghan women are …
The Effect Of Running On The Onset And Development Of Osteoarthritis, Jordan Hekman
The Effect Of Running On The Onset And Development Of Osteoarthritis, Jordan Hekman
Senior Honors Theses
Osteoarthritis is a prominent and debilitating form of joint disease characterized by pain and deterioration of the articular cartilage and other tissues in the affected joint. Research has identified a variety of risk factors for osteoarthritis, including age, obesity, gender, previous injury, and occupation. The relationship between running and osteoarthritis is a topic of particular interest because of the prevalence of running as a simple and physiologically beneficial form of exercise. Increasing evidence suggests that recreational running has at worst no effect and at best a protective effect on joint and articular cartilage health in contrast to high-intensity professional/elite-level running …
The Bible In Full Color: A High School Bible Study On The Inductive Bible Study Method, Margaret Gregory
The Bible In Full Color: A High School Bible Study On The Inductive Bible Study Method, Margaret Gregory
Senior Honors Theses
Modern Christianity is saturated with Bible studies for students. However, a crucial skill the Christian student needs to learn – how to study the Bible independently – is a topic difficult to find in contemporary youth Bible study curricula. While there is a wealth of biblically sound, helpful Bible studies that students can benefit from, it is essential that students do not remain dependent on these resources. One goal for youth ministry leaders is that their students graduate high school with the knowledge and tools they need to interpret the Scriptures for themselves correctly. The creative thesis will be an …
The Ethical Dilemmas Epigenetic Editing In Utero Presents To Christians, Victoria Hendrix
The Ethical Dilemmas Epigenetic Editing In Utero Presents To Christians, Victoria Hendrix
Senior Honors Theses
The development of CRISPR epigenetic editing technology was initially impactful due to its potential for disease treatment. However, despite the potential benefits of epigenetic technology, there exist ethical dilemmas surrounding its use in utero. The review of the ethical dilemmas of epigenetic editing in utero from a Christian perspective showed that research in epigenetic editing is promising, yet fraught with peril. The basic ethical issues of epigenetic editing in utero stem from its inaccuracy, lack of research concerning its effects on offspring, an incomplete understanding of gene interactions, and its connection to eugenics. The ethical concerns particularly relevant to Christians …

Rattus Norvegicus As A Biological Detector Of Clandestine Remains And The Use Of Ultrasonic Vocalizations As A Locating Mechanism, Gabrielle M. Johnston
Master's Theses
In investigations, locating missing persons and clandestine remains are imperative. One way that first responder and police agencies can search for the remains is by using cadaver dogs as biological detectors. Cadaver dogs are typically used due to their olfactory sensitivity and ability to detect low concentrations of volatile organic compounds produced by biological remains. Cadaver dogs are typically chosen for their stamina, agility, and olfactory sensitivity. However, what is not taken into account often is the size of the animal and the expense of maintaining and training the animal. Cadaver dogs are typically large breeds that cannot fit in …
Modern Slavery: A Thorough Examination On Human Trafficking Of Indigenous Women And Children In Mexico, Sarah Altuwaijri
Modern Slavery: A Thorough Examination On Human Trafficking Of Indigenous Women And Children In Mexico, Sarah Altuwaijri
International Studies (MA) Theses
Modern-day slavery is an international crime against humanity which affects millions of lives each year. Human trafficking, a form of Modern Slavery, has negative long-lasting implications on trafficked victims and society, particularly vulnerable members such as indigenous women and children. This study examines human trafficking and forced labor in Mexico with a focus on indigenous women and children. It uses a mixed methodology composed of both qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data is used to analyze historical materials related to Spanish colonialism in Mexico, while quantitative data is used to measure poverty, numbers of trafficked victims, and to establish the …
The Reconciliation Of Theology And Mythology In Philosophical Defenses Of Music In Early Modern London, Leanna York
The Reconciliation Of Theology And Mythology In Philosophical Defenses Of Music In Early Modern London, Leanna York
Graduate Thesis Collection
Since Antiquity, elements of Greek mythology and Hebraic history have intersected in many forms of literary and visual art. Renaissance philosophers, moved by skepticism, struggled to reconcile the historical and theological contradictions of these ancient sources, and scholars of European history Arthur Ferguson and Jean Seznec recognize resulting trends of mythological interpretation among authors of diverse disciplines. My research investigates ways in which London university professors John Taverner, John Case and an anonymous Oxford author utilized these interpretive methods in their music treatises of the early modern period and discusses the intersection of Protestant theology and Greek mythology in these …

Oiko-Logic In Literature, Elias Joshua Taylor
Oiko-Logic In Literature, Elias Joshua Taylor
Dissertations
My study utilizes ecocriticism, eco-Marxism, and posthumanism to discover how the sympathetic practices of both reading and ecology provide us with what I call an oiko-logic. Specifically, I read Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy, Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, and John Williams’ Butcher’s Crossing. In Gulliver’s Travels we see Gulliver as an ecological threat in every journey, and Swift says that this is because we forget ourselves and deliberately choose to not attune—sometimes even choosing destruction. For Swift, we bungle things no matter which system we try, and we create degenerative devolution despite the fact that we can help. …
Sprout: Using A Garden Metaphor To Visualize And Support Customizable And Collaborative Health Tracking, Pape Sow Traoré
Sprout: Using A Garden Metaphor To Visualize And Support Customizable And Collaborative Health Tracking, Pape Sow Traoré
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Self-tracking tools have become increasingly popular, especially with the advent of wearable technology and smartphone applications. However, traditional tracking tools often display data in a quantitative format that can be overwhelming and cause users to abandon their tracking efforts. Additionally, these tools typically provide a generic user experience and are designed from a single-user perspective, lacking external support. To overcome these limitations, we develop Sprout, a mobile data-tracking application that offers a more qualitative, customizable, and collaborative experience for health monitoring and management. Sprout uses a garden metaphor to visually represent health information and allows users to tailor their …

Abortion, Buddhism, And The Middle Way: What A Buddhist View Of Abortion In Japan Can Teach Us In The United States Following The Overturn Of Roe V. Wade, Anna Grace Kalvelage
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
This paper takes up the question of whether there is a “middle way” approach in addressing the issue of abortion, particularly in light of the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States. It explores this question through examining how schools of Buddhism have addressed the issue of abortion in Japan, especially considering Japan’s unique history with abortion issues and the mizuko kuyo rituals, and what initially appears to be a gap in theory and practice when it comes to Buddhism and abortion. It further explores how some of the central tenets of Buddhism including karma, rebirth, and compassion …

Investigating the roles of lung epithelial STAT3 in therapeutically inducible resistance to acute bacterial pneumonia.
Vikram Vitthal Kulkarni, M.S.
Advisory Professor: Scott Evans, MD.
The lung epithelium is a dynamic tissue capable of displaying structural and functional plasticity in response to pathogenic challenges. Our lab has demonstrated that it is possible to therapeutically exploit the lung epithelium’s versatility by inducing resistance to lethal pneumonias caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. An inhaled combination of a TLR2/6 agonist and a TLR9 agonist (Pam2ODN) results in robust protection against otherwise lethal pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pam2ODN-mediated protection requires key signaling …
P53 Dimers Elicit Unique Tumor Suppressive Activities Through An Altered Metabolic Program, Jovanka Gencel-Augusto
P53 Dimers Elicit Unique Tumor Suppressive Activities Through An Altered Metabolic Program, Jovanka Gencel-Augusto
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
p53 is the most frequently mutated tumor suppressor in human cancer. As a tetrameric transcription factor, mutation of the p53 Tetramerization Domain (TD) is a mechanism by which cancers abrogate wild-type (WT) p53 function. p53 TD mutations result in a protein that preferentially forms monomers or dimers. These are also normal p53 states under basal cellular conditions. Although it is accepted that tetrameric p53 is required for full tumor suppressive activities, the physiological relevance of monomeric and dimeric states of p53 is not well understood. We have established in vivo models for monomeric and dimeric p53 which model Li-Fraumeni Syndrome …
Gene Expression–Based Algorithms For The Identification Of Drug Combinations In Personalized Medicine, Lon Fong
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Three of the major problems facing cancer therapeutics are 1) drug resistance, the intrinsic or acquired ability of cancer cells to evade the effect of the therapies used to treat them; 2) heterogeneity among individual patients’ disease at the molecular level and the resulting variability in therapeutic response; and 3) the limitations of genomics biomarkers in matching patients to the most effective therapy. One possible solution to drug resistance is the use of combination therapies rather than monotherapies. Use of multiple drugs, each with a different mechanism of action, lowers the chances that the cancer cells will develop or have …
The Cx3cl1-Cx3cr1 Chemokine Axis Contributes To Tumor Immune Evasion And Its Blockade Enhances Responses To Anti-Pd-1 Immunotherapy, Apoorvi Chaudhri
The Cx3cl1-Cx3cr1 Chemokine Axis Contributes To Tumor Immune Evasion And Its Blockade Enhances Responses To Anti-Pd-1 Immunotherapy, Apoorvi Chaudhri
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
CX3CL1 secreted in the tumor microenvironment serves as a chemoattractant playing a critical role in metastasis of CX3CR1 expressing cancer cells. While CX3CR1 can be expressed in both cancer and immune-inhibitory myeloid cells to facilitate their migration, the mechanisms employed by this axis on these cells to mediate immune suppression remain poorly understood. Here, we explore the immune evasion strategies implemented by this axis and find that it initiates a resistance program in cancer cells that results in 1) facilitation of tumor cell migration, 2) secretion of soluble mediators to generate a pro-metastatic niche, 3) secretion of mediators to attract …
Uncovering Molecular Targets To Overcome Immunosuppression In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer With Acquired Tki Resistance, Sonia A. Patel
Uncovering Molecular Targets To Overcome Immunosuppression In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer With Acquired Tki Resistance, Sonia A. Patel
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Targeted therapeutic agents, such as epidermal-like growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) or monoclonal antibodies targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF/R), can effectively inhibit upregulated signaling pathways driving tumorigenesis in NSCLC and many other cancers. Unfortunately, however, resistance to such targeted therapies inevitably arise in most patients and can occur through a variety of resistance mechanisms including genomic alterations and upregulation of bypass pathways. Additionally, patients who have acquired resistance to these targeted agents typically have tumors characterized by an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and thus …
Targeting Metabolic Alterations Associated With Smooth Muscle Α-Actin Pathogenic Variant Attenuates Moyamoya-Like Cerebrovascular Disease, Anita Kaw
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Heterozygous pathogenic variants in ACTA2, encoding smooth muscle α-actin (α-SMA), predispose to thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections. De novo missense variants disrupting ACTA2 arginine 179 (p.Arg179) cause a multisystemic disease termed smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome (SMDS), which is characterized by early onset thoracic aortic disease and moyamoya disease-like (MMD) cerebrovascular disease. The MMD-like cerebrovascular disease in SMDS patients is marked by bilateral steno-occlusive lesions in the distal internal carotid arteries (ICAs) and their branches. To study the molecular mechanisms that underlie the ACTA2 p.Arg179 variants, a smooth muscle-specific Cre-lox knock-in mouse model of the heterozygous Acta2 R179C variant, termed …
Y Chromosome Gene Kdm5d Epigenetically Drives Sex Differences In Colorectal Cancer, Jiexi Li
Y Chromosome Gene Kdm5d Epigenetically Drives Sex Differences In Colorectal Cancer, Jiexi Li
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Sex exerts a profound impact on cancer incidence, spectrum and outcomes, yet the molecular genetic bases of such sex differences are ill-defined and presumptively ascribed to X-chromosome genes and sex hormones. Such sex differences are particularly prominent in colorectal cancer (CRC) where men experience higher metastases and mortality. A murine CRC model, engineered with an inducible transgene encoding oncogenic mutant KRASG12D and conditional null alleles of Apc and Trp53 tumor suppressors (designated iKAP), revealed higher metastases and worse outcomes specifically in males with oncogenic mutant KRAS (KRAS*) CRC. Integrated cross-species molecular and transcriptomic analyses identified Y-chromosome gene histone demethylase …
P120-Catenin Subfamily Members Have Distinct As Well As Shared Effects On Dendrite Morphology During Neuron Development In Vitro, Maxsam Donta
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Proper dendrite morphology is essential for neuronal connectivity and function, and abnormal dendrite morphology is seen in many neurological pathologies. This study characterizes and compares the effects of a group of four proteins – the p120-catenin subfamily – that regulate cytoskeletal remodeling and dendrite morphology. To do this, I tracked the endogenous localization of each p120-subfamily catenin during neuron development, and I determined how altering the expression of each p120-subfamily catenin affects dendrite morphology. I find that all catenins are expressed in dendritic processes and the soma, ARVCF-catenin is expressed at relatively high proportions in the nucleus, and p120-catenin and …
Treatment Planning Automation For Rectal Cancer Radiotherapy, Kai Huang
Treatment Planning Automation For Rectal Cancer Radiotherapy, Kai Huang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background
Rectal cancer is a common type of cancer. There is an acute health disparity across the globe where a significant population of the world lack adequate access to radiotherapy treatments which is a part of the standard of care for rectal cancers. Safe radiotherapy treatments require specialized planning expertise and are time-consuming and labor-intensive to produce.
Purpose:
To alleviate the health disparity and promote the safe and quality use of radiotherapy in treating rectal cancers, the entire treatment planning process needs to be automated. The purpose of this project is to develop automated solutions for the treatment planning process …
Regulation Of De Novo And Maintenance Dna Methylation By Dnmt3a And Dnmt3b, Yang Zeng
Regulation Of De Novo And Maintenance Dna Methylation By Dnmt3a And Dnmt3b, Yang Zeng
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
DNA methylation (5-methylcytosine, 5mC) is essential for the regulation of gene expression and integrity of the mammalian genome. It occurs predominantly in the context of CpG dinucleotides to form a symmetrical pattern on both DNA strands, which allows DNA methylation patterns to be semi-conservatively maintained during DNA replication. There are two classes of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs): DNMT3A and DNMT3B function primarily as de novo methyltransferases that establish DNA methylation patterns, whereas DNMT1 is the major enzyme responsible for maintaining DNA methylation patterns by converting hemi-methylated CpGs to fully methylated CpGs during DNA replication. Two accessory factors also play critical regulatory …
Hypoxia Activated Prodrug And Anti-Angiogenic Therapy Cooperate To Treat Pancreatic Cancer But Elicit Immune Suppressive G-Mdsc Infiltration, Arthur Liu
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
We previously showed that the hypoxia-activated prodrug TH-302 (Evofosfamide) reduces intratumoral hypoxia through a tissue remodeling process, initiates tumor vasculature reorganization, and sensitizes aggressive, spontaneous murine models of prostate cancer to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). In a clinical trial testing the combination of TH-302 with cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein (CTLA-4) blockade (NCT03098160) a subset of metastatic, ICB refractory patients showed prolonged progression free survival. While these studies highlight hypoxia as therapeutically tractable, we lack a complete understanding of the contribution of the tumor vasculature to hypoxia reduction therapy, as well as the downstream consequences of hypoxia reduction on the cellular composition …
Functions Of The Trna Splicing Endonuclease And Other Adventures In Rna Processing, Jennifer Hurtig, Ambro Van Hoof
Functions Of The Trna Splicing Endonuclease And Other Adventures In Rna Processing, Jennifer Hurtig, Ambro Van Hoof
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The tRNA splicing endonuclease (TSEN), has been studied for over three decades for its function in tRNA splicing. However, this enzyme has other functions that are just beginning to be characterized. Mutations in TSEN cause the neuronal disease pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) that is characterized by atrophy of the cerebellum and pons, overall developmental failure, and usually results in death before adolescence. How mutations in TSEN cause these neuronal defects and disease is not understood. In yeast, TSEN has another essential function that is independent of tRNA splicing and is still unknown. In this thesis I strived to understand the other …
