Teachers’ Perspectives On Multimodal Texts In Middle School Reading Language Arts Classrooms In The Rio Grande Valley, Angelica Montoya Ybarra
Teachers’ Perspectives On Multimodal Texts In Middle School Reading Language Arts Classrooms In The Rio Grande Valley, Angelica Montoya Ybarra
Theses and Dissertations
Literacy in the 21st century includes multiple modes of communication that include culturally and linguistic diverse representation. It also includes multimodal texts that use visual, audio, and technological elements to create meaning. The new changing technologies have expanded literacy to more than print and written forms. Literacy instruction has seen pedagogical changes, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Educators need to explore new literacy practices that benefit the growing diversity in societies along with the fast-growing technologies. Students need skills and mentoring to navigate digital learning platforms. Literacy in the 21st century includes multimodal texts, technology, nontraditional literacy skills, and multiliteracies. …
Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore
Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore
Theses
Decision making is heavily influenced by the environment around us. Berry et al. (2014, 2015, 2019) showed that viewing images of natural environments during the delay discounting task resulted in lower impulsive choice, as compared to viewing images of built environments or geometric figures. Berry et al. proposed that attentional factors could explain this effect, however, recent attempts to reproduce Berry et al.’s findings in a different laboratory have been unsuccessful (Johnson 2017, 2018, 2019). The present study tested if manipulating the participants’ observing responses towards different types of images (natural, built, and no images) modulates the effect reported by …

Familia Adelante: Hope For Youth And Families At Risk, Gustavo A. Salgado
Familia Adelante: Hope For Youth And Families At Risk, Gustavo A. Salgado
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Partners for Peace (P4P) will implement the Familia Adelante (FA) project to help at-risk Latino families. Counselors, probation officers, and parents recommend cultural change adaptation programs for Latino families. DePanfilis (2006) believes neglect damages brain development more than trauma, but self-esteem issues affect adolescent behavior more than violence. Providing evidence-based services and support can help prevent abuse and neglect. Child abuse usually leads to delinquency, antisocial behavior, and unhealthy sexual behavior in adolescents. FA projects require parents to set limits, communicate with their children, work together, love, and use discipline as a corrective tool. P4P's FA project helps immigrant families …
The Pinocchio Boy: A Collection Of Queer Creative Written Work, Lucas Olvera
The Pinocchio Boy: A Collection Of Queer Creative Written Work, Lucas Olvera
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Pinocchio Boy is a series of short stories/memoirs and poems about my experiences as a Transgender and Gay man. Structured in five parts, I explore my childhood, young adulthood, and adulthood. My collection offers me an insight into what made me who I am today. There are drastic tonal shifts between the poem segments and the memoirs, I intended to act as the narrator of my story in which the poems and dialogue act as the characters in motion and the memoirs as my direct narration. A tongue-in-cheek fairy tale tone, but coming from a sincere place. My intent …

Swimming In The Third Stream: A Performance Guide For David Baker’S Singers Of Songs/Weavers Of Dreams For Cello And Percussion, Kelsey Linnea Smith
Swimming In The Third Stream: A Performance Guide For David Baker’S Singers Of Songs/Weavers Of Dreams For Cello And Percussion, Kelsey Linnea Smith
Dissertations
David Baker was an American composer, performer, and pedagogue who wrote over 2000 works during the course of his career. Baker’s output spans a wide variety of genres and styles, including compositions for jazz band, symphony orchestra, choir, and various chamber ensembles. Using elements from his background in both jazz and classical music, Baker’s musical language is one that creates a true synthesis of styles, especially when writing in a third stream context. Additionally, Baker was inspired by African American figures from his past, and often wrote music honoring those who came before him. In this way, Baker adds his …
Chamber Music In The Dominican Republic: New Arrangements For Ensemble With Piano, Laura Gisselle Pimentel Ferreira
Chamber Music In The Dominican Republic: New Arrangements For Ensemble With Piano, Laura Gisselle Pimentel Ferreira
Dissertations
Although the catalogue of instrumental works written by Dominican composers during the 20th century includes a large number of pieces for ensemble, the repertoire dedicated to piano chamber music is comparatively scarce. While it is possible to find duets, especially for piano and violin, flute, or sometimes cello, the role of the piano is secondary, mostly for accompaniment, instead of having its own voice. The number of works written for an ensemble comprised of piano and at least two more players is almost non-existent. The lack of attention to this type of composition makes it practically impossible for a pianist …
Regulators Of Mast Cell Activation, David Lyons
Regulators Of Mast Cell Activation, David Lyons
Dissertations
This research focuses on identifying novel mechanisms through which mast cells (MCs) can be activated, specifically focusing on the effects of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) on MC activation and cytokine release and how these pathways can contribute to disease. We found that MCs can be activated with TGF-β1 alone, inducing degranulation and cytokine release comparable to classical, immunoglobulin-E-mediated activation paradigms. This activated state resembles a described concept in immunology termed trained immunity – a process that allows innate immune cells to potentiate their future immune responses following priming with a stimulus. Hypothesizing that TGF-β1 is a novel stimulus of …

Phosphatase of Regenerating Liver-3 (PRL-3) is associated with cancer progression and metastasis. The mechanisms that drive PRL-3’s oncogenic functions are not well under- stood, partly due to a lack of research tools available to study this protein. We have begun to address these issues by developing alpaca-derived single domain antibodies, or nanobo- dies, targeting PRL-3 with a KD of 30–300 nM and no activity towards highly homologous family members PRL-1 and PRL-2. We found that longer and charged N-terminal tags on PRL-3, such as GFP and FLAG, changed PRL-3 localization compared to untagged protein, indicating that the nanobodies may provide …

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that circulating tumor cell (CTC) clusters have higher metastatic ability than single CTCs and negatively correlate with cancer patient outcomes. Along with homotypic CTC clusters, heterotypic CTC clusters (such as neutrophil–CTC clusters), which have been identified in both cancer mouse models and cancer patients, lead to more efficient metastasis formation and worse patient outcomes. However, the mechanism by which neutrophils bind to CTCs remains elusive. In this study, we found that intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on triple- negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and CD11b on neutrophils mediate tumor cell–neutrophil binding. Consequently, CD11b deficiency inhibited tumor cell–neutrophil binding …

Background: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign intracranial tumors caused by loss of function of the merlin tumor suppressor. We tested three hypotheses related to radiation, hearing loss (HL), and VS cell survival: (1) radiation causes HL by injuring auditory hair cells (AHC), (2) fractionation reduces radiation-induced HL, and (3) single fraction and equivalent appropriately dosed multi-fractions are equally effective at controlling VS growth. We investigated the effects of single fraction and hypofractionated radiation on hearing thresholds in rats, cell death pathways in rat cochleae, and viability of human merlin-deficient Schwann cells (MD-SC). Methods: Adult rats received cochlear irradiation with single …

Aberrant accumulation of succinate has been detected in many cancers. However, the cellular function and regulation of succinate in cancer progression is not completely understood. Using stable isotope-resolved metabolomics analysis, we showed that the epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) was associated with profound changes in metabolites, including elevation of cytoplasmic succinate levels. The treatment with cell-permeable succinate induced mesenchymal phenotypes in mammary epithelial cells and enhanced cancer cell stemness. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequence analysis showed that elevated cytoplasmic succinate levels were sufficient to reduce global 5-hydroxymethylcytosinene (5hmC) accumulation and induce transcriptional repression of EMT-related genes. We showed that expression of procollagen-lysine,2-oxoglutarate …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
During the latter half of the twentieth century, “dog whistle” rhetoric increasingly entered the common vernacular, normalized by politicians and media personalities. Initially, the terminology was ambiguous, but it became racially charged when the media started broadcasting images of African Americans alongside the “thug” label. This research explores how “dog whistles” were, in part, a neoconservative response to the liberal policies of President Lyndon B. Johnson and his “Great Society.”
This study explores how “Great Society” policies aimed to balance the liberal expansion of Civil Rights with neoconservative “law and order” policing strategies. This research also investigates how right-wing talk …

Impact Of Outdoor Adventure On The Self-Esteem, Self-Confidence, And Comfort Level Of Black And Brown Girls, Nathan Benham
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
While there have been many studies that have focused on the effect of outdoor adventure and physical activity on self-confidence and self-esteem for adolescents (Bélanger et al., 2019; Dale et al., 2019; Lubans et al., 2012), there are few that focus solely on adolescent girls (Evans et al., 2020), and even less that focus exclusively on Black and Brown adolescent girls. This study aimed to expand the available data on how outdoor adventure and physical activity impacted self-confidence and self-esteem on Black and Brown adolescent girls. Recruiting participants from Atabey Outdoors, a non-profit outdoor program that specializes in providing outdoor …

Exploring Permanency Rates Within The Southern California Counties Of Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino And San Diego, Karrene Turner
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The term permanency within child welfare is the right for all children to have a childhood with a nurturing and permanent family. For children within foster care, it means a permanent family-based living situation with one of the following: parents, permanent placement with relatives, reunification with parents or adoption (Freundlich et al., 2006). The purpose of this study is to examine the perceived differences in permanency rates within 12 months of entry in child welfare within the Southern California counties of Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego within a 10-year time span. The study will use pre-existing data …

Assessing Knowledge, Attitude, And Practice Among College Students Regarding Second-Hand And Third-Hand Smoke, Laura Y. Rebolledo
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Background: The tobacco epidemic has been a constant since the popularization of tobacco products. However, with the introduction of non-combustible products that include e-cigarettes and vapes, the usage of tobacco products has continued to increase. Tobacco exposure can stem from first-hand (FHS), second-hand (SHS), and third-hand smoke (THS), with the last two impacting even non-smokers. The health effects from all types of tobacco exposure can be detrimental. These effects include the risk of cancer in any organ of the body, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory diseases.
Methods: The study utilized a cross-sectional design through an anonymous web-based survey given …

Identification Of Molecular Markers Associated With Copd In Non-Smokers And Smokers: A Bioinformatics Analysis, Agede O. Ayodele, Isa M. Wasagu, Ademola E. Fawibe, Alakija K. Salami
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
Background
Even though the proportional burden of COPD among never-smokers is significant in both developing and developed nations, accounting for around 30% of all COPD in the community, there is little awareness of the prevalence of COPD in this population. Understanding the molecular processes that underlie COPD in nonsmokers is essential.
Methods
Dataset (GSE146560) was acquired from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). The limma and clusterProfiler software tools were used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and conduct a functional enrichment analysis respectively.
Results
In all, 10,583 DEGs were found, of which 1,065 were up-regulated and 9,518 were down-regulated. The …
Anticolonial Feminism, Sylvia Moreno-Garcia, And The Female Gothic: A Textual Analysis Of Mexican Gothic, Hana Vega
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Latinx authors writing in English are challenging the western literary canon and the way stories are told through a western-centric lens. I argue that Mexican Canadian author Sylvia Moreno Garcia and her novel Mexican Gothic redefines the genre by telling the story of a British family living in 1950’s Mexico from an anti-colonial feminist lens. After a review of the literature on the gothic genre and how authors of color use it to respond to western-centric ideas in their own gothic novels, I am approaching the text using postcolonial and decolonial feminist theories to conduct a textual, genre, and ideological …
The Effects Of Radiation On Cancer Stem Cells In Glioblastoma And Ovarian Cancer, Aaron Keniston
The Effects Of Radiation On Cancer Stem Cells In Glioblastoma And Ovarian Cancer, Aaron Keniston
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
High grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are some of the most aggressive forms of cancer with poor patient survival. Despite successful cancer therapies, these malignancies have high recurrence rates which can be attributed to cancer stem cells (CSC) due to innate tumor initiating properties. In this study, we investigated the response of CSC populations to proton and photon radiation by quantification of core stem cell transcription factors Sox2 and Oct4. This was carried out utilizing a Sox2/Oct4 green fluorescent protein based reporter designated as SORE6-GFP measured by flow cytometry. We hypothesize that proton and photon irradiation …

Ever since I was a kid, I have had this fear that still lingers today: the fear of being an adult. It’s my ongoing fear.
I look back to my childhood. I find comfort. I was happy and stress-free. In my childhood, I was unrestrained and enjoyed my innocence. It was my “happier times”. I did not have the worries of responsibilities and burdens. That mindset changed when I realized my father had two full time jobs. I stopped acting my age and became more independent. I didn't want to trouble my parents with school or personal issues. Now I …

This research explored supplementing Nigella sativa (black cumin) seed oil in poultry feed to mitigate coccidiosis and prevent or lessen NE in broilers. In vivo studies consisted of 384 and 320 Cobb 500 male broiler chicks distributed in a randomized complete block experimental design for trials 1 and 2, respectively. The first trial compared 3 concentrations (1, 2, and 5 mL/kg) of black cumin seed oil (BCSO), and trial 2 compared 2 concentrations (2 and 5 mL/kg) BCSO, with …
Emerging Tick-Borne Diseases In Northeast Tennessee, Jacob Schultz
Emerging Tick-Borne Diseases In Northeast Tennessee, Jacob Schultz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tick populations have been immigrating into northeast Tennessee from east Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina. Counties in states bordering northeast Tennessee harbor tick species associated with human illness. Human diseases transmitted by ticks include ehrlichiosis, spotted fever rickettsial group diseases, tularemia, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Lyme disease, alpha-gal syndrome, Heartland virus, Powassan virus, and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). These diseases cause morbidity and mortality in human populations and may pose a high risk to individuals, wildlife, and livestock. The Cherokee National Forest covering the east Tennessee border provides a permissible environment for ticks to immigrate and thrive. Residents of northeast …

The Reinforcement Enhancing Effects Of Delta-9-Tetrahyrdrocannabinol (Thc) In Male And Female Rats, Kynah Walston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cannabis is widely consumed by humans for pharmacological effects that are mediated by THC, though there is little evidence that THC is a primary reinforcer in non-human animal models. We hypothesized that THC may have potent reinforcement enhancing effects, comparable to other drugs (e.g., nicotine and caffeine) which are also widely consumed by humans, but difficult to establish as primary reinforcers in non-humans. In three experiments with male and female rats saccharin (SACC) or a visual stimulus (VS) served as reinforcers for operant behavior. We explored several pharmacological parameters of THC on responding for SACC or VS, including THC dose, …

Tell The Bees That Transcendentalism Is Lost: The Search For The Lost Transcendental Space In The Bee Poetry Of Emily Dickinson And Sylvia Plath, Adyson M. Ross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ralph Waldo Emerson’s bee poem, “The Humble-Bee,” expresses the nineteenth-century transcendentalist philosophy of finding wholeness and oneness in nature while Sylvia Plath’s twentieth-century bee poems function as a response to Plath’s feelings of alienation and repression, indicating that transcendental peace is lost in the postmodern era. Emerson’s poem indicates the spiritual fulfilment found through observing bees and highlights the harmony between humans and nature, but women of the nineteenth century find difficulty achieving this same level of freedom; Emily Dickinson reclaims the language of transcendentalism in her bee poetry to explore a world otherwise denied to her. The effects of …
Identifying Taphonomic Distribution Patterns At The Gray Fossil Site, Shawn Haugrud
Identifying Taphonomic Distribution Patterns At The Gray Fossil Site, Shawn Haugrud
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the early days of the discovery of the Gray Fossil Site (GFS), meticulous efforts to preserve the spatial data were a priority. Direct surveying of fossils prior to recovery, as well as grid mapping the site, provided relative spatial data within a square meter. Such efforts meant that even fragments and microfossils, recovered during the screening operations and eventual concentrate picking, maintained some spatial data. Available spatial data are used to identify smaller deposits within the greater system, as well as non-random distribution patterns among a number of GFS taxa. Patterns are particularly pronounced in the large-bodied taxa, Teleoceras …
Inhibiting Survival Of Salmonella During Desiccation Through The Use Of Naturally Occurring Signals, Joseph Headrick
Inhibiting Survival Of Salmonella During Desiccation Through The Use Of Naturally Occurring Signals, Joseph Headrick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A rising problem in agriculture is the increase of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella cases associated with chicken eggs, which transmit infection to humans. To counter this, new approaches to combat Salmonella in chickens and desiccated on eggshells are vital in the prevention of human foodborne illness. Disrupting signaling pathways with naturally occurring compounds provides a potential novel avenue for prevention of Salmonella infections, as this would disrupt sensing of these environments and inhibit subsequent optimal gene expression. Starting with signals identified in previous studies, salicylic acid was found to inhibit Salmonella desiccation survival on both eggshells and plastic. To expand upon this, …
