Sim-To-Real Reinforcement Learning Framework For Autonomous Aerial Leaf Sampling, Ashraful Islam
Sim-To-Real Reinforcement Learning Framework For Autonomous Aerial Leaf Sampling, Ashraful Islam
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for leaf sampling is contributing to a better understanding of the influence of climate change on plant species, and the dynamics of forest ecology by studying hard-to-reach tree canopies. Currently, multiple skilled operators are required for UAS maneuvering and using the leaf sampling tool. This often limits sampling to only the canopy top or periphery. Sim-to-real reinforcement learning (RL) can be leveraged to tackle challenges in the autonomous operation of aerial leaf sampling in the changing environment of a tree canopy. However, trans- ferring an RL controller that is learned in simulation to real UAS …

Introduction Culturally validated neurocognitive measures for children in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries are important in the timely and correct identification of neurocognitive impairments. Such measures can inform develop‐ ment of interventions for children exposed to additional vulnerabilities like HIV infection. The Battery for Neuropsy‐ chological Evaluation of Children (BENCI) is an openly available, computerized neuropsychological battery specifically developed to evaluate neurocognitive impairment. This study adapted the BENCI and evaluated its reliability and validity in Kenya.
Methodology The BENCI was adapted using translation and back‐translation from Spanish to English. The psy‐ chometric properties were evaluated in a case–control study of 328 …
Experiencing Positional Turbulence: High School Social Studies Teachers' Perceptions Of Instructional Leadership Support While Teaching During National Crises, Lynn M. Walters-Rauenhorst
Experiencing Positional Turbulence: High School Social Studies Teachers' Perceptions Of Instructional Leadership Support While Teaching During National Crises, Lynn M. Walters-Rauenhorst
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This research examined instructional leadership support of eight Louisiana high school social studies teachers as they experienced positional turbulence as a result of teaching to politically and socially aware students in a polarized political and social climate during the 2020-2021 school year. In recent years the American education system has been challenged in unprecedented ways. A global pandemic, renewed calls for social justice, and a highly polarized political climate created an extremely turbulent environment for all educators. Social studies teachers faced a unique set of challenges of integrating controversial current events into a high-stakes standards-based curriculum. Utilizing a conceptual framework …

"The Freedom To Express Yourself": The National Park Service And The African Diasporic Roots Of Black Dance In New Orleans, Ariel D. Roy
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In partnership with the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, my project entitled “African Dance in New Orleans: The Roots of Black New Orleans Dance” exhibit will focus on the African diasporic roots of Black traditional dance practices within New Orleans’ African American community. This project aims to diversify the public and political expressions of Black dance in New Orleans. It argues that the study of dance forms and practices uncovers narratives and fragments of African and African American cultural history in New Orleans that are impossible to glean from other sources. This thesis will support three modes of African …

A Potential Model For Hepatic Regulation Of Peripheral Adipose Tissue Expansion, Madeleine Nowak, Rea Anuciado, Robert Koza
Costas T. Lambrew Research Retreat 2023
Given the established relationship between liver and white adipose tissue, we hypothesize that hepatokines—particularly adropin—are the source of coordinated gene expression in peripheral adipose tissue driving fat mass expansion.

In this collection, the poet explores how her personal struggles with mental health have shaped her development, relationships, experiences, and outlook on life. In poems that display a variety of stylistic forms and poetic techniques, the collection creatively sheds light on taboo topics including eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, and depression. Without making light of the sensitive subject matter, the poems reflect the author’s characteristic humor, self-satire, authenticity, and humility. Through metaphors, symbolism, and allegory, many draw subtle attention to the stigma around therapy, residential rehabilitation, and psychiatric prescriptions, in hopes of raising awareness for mental health treatment and removing the …

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances in the environment, food sources, personal care products, and manufactured products that interfere with the normal function of the body’s endocrine system. Most humans are exposed to some amount of these chemicals from many different sources, such as the air we breathe, food we eat, and the water we drink. EDCs can also permeate through the skin. The endocrine system is important because it works with other systems in the body to ensure healthy development and function throughout life. EDCs interfere with the way our body’s hormones work. Some EDCs can mimic natural hormones …

Where Does The Church Stand In Today’S Mental Health Landscape?, Noah T. Mursu
Honors Capstone Projects
Religious involvement in care for those living with mental illness has been going on for centuries, and perspectives on it have changed throughout the years. This literature review evaluates the place of religious groups, mainly Christian churches, in today's mental health situation by considering past and present involvement. It incorporates sources regarding different eras of mental hospital reform, modern perspectives of mental health clinicians and clergy, and the current gaps in mental health support among a variety of groups, including veterans, African Americans, and people in developing countries. This review then considers potential future involvement, especially considering how these gaps …
Antitrust Federalism And The Prison-Industrial Complex, Gregory Day
Antitrust Federalism And The Prison-Industrial Complex, Gregory Day
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
States are not only prolific monopolists but also virtually unaccountable. Consider the prison-industrial complex, where states force inmates to pay monopoly prices while suppressing competition for commissary items, phone services, medicine, and more. While the Sherman Act would often ban these types of practices, states are immune from antitrust scrutiny as a matter of federalism—a concept referring to the constitutional division of power between federal and states actors. Because regulating commerce is considered an essential feature of self-rule, the Supreme Court held in Parker v. Brown that antitrust review would impermissibly strip states of their autonomy. In fact, this immunity …
Are Rising Seas Pushing Ghost Crabs Out Of Their Comfort Zone?, Finn Gillette
Are Rising Seas Pushing Ghost Crabs Out Of Their Comfort Zone?, Finn Gillette
Honors Theses
Ghost crabs (Ocypode quadrata) can be found on sandy beaches bordering the western Atlantic Ocean. These semiterrestrial crustaceans are often found between the swash zone and the dunes on beaches. Dunes are critical refuges for ghost crabs during storms and extreme tide events. This makes them a useful indicator species for monitoring the effects of global warming-induced sea level rise on beach biota, as their distribution patterns among beach zones may correlate with shifts found in other species. Beach surveys conducted from 2015 onward assessed the population density of ghost crabs on beaches of Horry and Georgetown counties …

Integrating Ai-Generative Tools In Web Design Education: Enhancing Student Aesthetic And Creative Copy Capabilities Using Image And Text-Based Ai Generators, Jason Lively, James Hutson, Elizabeth Melick
Faculty Scholarship
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to disrupt all levels of education. The recent advances in the generative capabilities of new chatbots, AI art generators, and large language models have upended the art and design development pipeline. At the same time, the focus has remained on the nature of creativity and the role of humans in the creative process, prompting calls to ban AI art, bring lawsuits over copyright infringement, and demand universal watermarks to identify AI-generative content. Regardless of the outcome of such litigation, AI has already radically altered the workflow for artists and designers. This case study aims to …
Analyzing Grassland Bird Song And Success: The Impact Of Landscape Characteristics On Western Meadowlarks (Sturnella Neglecta), Leah Crenshaw
Analyzing Grassland Bird Song And Success: The Impact Of Landscape Characteristics On Western Meadowlarks (Sturnella Neglecta), Leah Crenshaw
Master's Theses
Grassland birds across both North America and globally are in rapid decline, and these population losses are primarily due to agricultural practices driving land-conversion and habitat degradation. While the effects of landscape characteristics like land cover, fragmentation, anthropogenic features, and land use on bird abundance and diversity are well-studied, the mechanisms behind those effects are poorly understood for many species. In our studies, we considered how individual condition and behavior may be underpinning some population losses in Western Meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta). First, we investigated what natural, anthropogenic, and climatic landscape characteristics best predicted Western Meadowlark song structure. We used 421 …
Student Reasonings And Cognitive Biases In Climate Change Predictions, Kaela Clabaugh Howell
Student Reasonings And Cognitive Biases In Climate Change Predictions, Kaela Clabaugh Howell
Master's Theses
Undergraduate biology educators strive to understand how to best teach students the concepts of climate change. The root of this understanding is the establishment of what students know about climate change. This research aims to describe undergraduate biology students’ conceptions of climate change and their argument practices and associated cognitive biases in how they think about the topic. We used a basic qualitative research design to explore interview data from 26 American biology undergraduate students who predicted how climate change would affect a forested ecosystem after an average of one degree increase in Fahrenheit over 25 years. Overall, the majority …
The Effect Of Head Size On Canine Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Abigail Eileen Hayes
The Effect Of Head Size On Canine Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Abigail Eileen Hayes
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
The brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) test is a commonly used objective tool for estimating hearing sensitivity in newborn humans and could be a useful diagnostic test for humans who are unable or unwilling to participate in behavioral audiometric testing. The BAER test is currently the gold standard for testing domestic canine hearing and could similarly be used either as a screening tool or diagnostically. The test procedure is minimally invasive and could provide ear-specific estimates of hearing sensitivity. While the general morphology of the waveform resulting from a BAER test is generally agreed upon, questions remain regarding the expected …

Frequency Specific Hearing Assessment Noise: Minimum Response Levels And Response Times In The Pediatric Population, Justine Louise Wright
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Pediatric audiological testing typically consists of using sound field testing for children six months to two years of age. It is conducted with a child seated in the center of a sound booth with speakers located on the right and left sides of the patient at varying degrees each with an object to reinforce their response. This sound field testing is completed using one of two stimuli: narrowband noise or warbled tones. A newer noise, referred to as frequency specific hearing assessment (FRESH) noise. was created to be used specifically for pediatric patients to grab their attention and respond faster …

Differential Electrostatic Interaction Patterns In Sars-Cov-1 And Sars-Cov-2 Variants: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, Ugochi Hope Isu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The SARS-related coronavirus (SARS-rCoV) is a highly contagious virus that has raised significant worldwide health concerns. It caused outbreaks in 2002-2003 and more recently in 2019-2020 with SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in a significant global impact on health and the economy. The spike protein of the virus plays a critical role in its infectivity and transmission, and the receptor-binding domain (RBD) within the spike protein is of particular interest, as it is responsible for binding to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. In this study, we used Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to …
Closing The Loop Of Food Systems: Analyzing Compost Within Community Bounds, Ellen A. Getter
Closing The Loop Of Food Systems: Analyzing Compost Within Community Bounds, Ellen A. Getter
Honors Theses
The aim of this thesis is to construct a philosophical and ecological argument that places great value on localized food systems in terms of waste. This composition develops the claim that building composting infrastructure on a community scale will curb the global climate crisis and enhance the interconnectedness humans have within themselves, each other, and the natural world. The first prong of this thesis entails a theoretical framework we must function under in order to implement such radical food revolutions in our communities informed by Buddhist principles. This proceeds an international case study of the composting infrastructure of Fort Albany …
Sadder And Wiser Nonsense: Coleridge's "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner", Nina Richard
Sadder And Wiser Nonsense: Coleridge's "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner", Nina Richard
Honors Theses
"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is a long-form poem that tends to elude understanding. Since its original publication in the Lyrical Ballads in 1798, readers have been unable to interpret the true meaning behind the tale and for what intention Coleridge had for writing the piece. Over the past two hundred years, scholars have attempted to interpret "The Rime" and yet it seems that every interpretation simply cannot hold true to the entire narrative. Through an overview of the textual and critical reception history of the poem, I conjecture that "The Rime" is actually imitating …
A Small Stem Assay Using Hypovirulent Cryphonectria Parasitica To Screen Castanea Dentata Backcross F2 Families May Set The Stage For Long-Term Survival, Trish Nguyen
Honors Theses
By combining the results of blight resistance breeding and the application of hypovirulence as a biocontrol, populations of resistant hybrid trees could be deployed together with a less pathogenic strain of Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr. I used a small stem assay to screen seedlings in thirteen half-sibling backcross F2 families with an attenuated strain of C. parasitica containing the Cryphonectria parasitica hypovirus-1 (CHV-1) Euro7 virus. The experiment was set up as a randomized complete block design in 2-gallon containers. Measurements of canker length and morphology were gathered at 90 days post-inoculation. Although statistically significant differences were seen between canker lengths …
Boudica At The Intersection: Gender, Alterity, And Narrative In Imperial Roman Historiography, Adam Cummings
Boudica At The Intersection: Gender, Alterity, And Narrative In Imperial Roman Historiography, Adam Cummings
Honors Theses
Tacitus (fl. ~100 ᴄᴇ) and Cassius Dio (fl. ~200 ᴄᴇ) wrote, respectively, the Annales and the Historia Romana, both now fragmentary, both detailing imperial Roman expansion, and both displaying anxieties about the barbarian ‘Other.’ Their accounts of Boudica, who led the Iceni against Roman encroachment in Britannia in 62 CE, provide a view into these authors’ visions of colonization, ethnicity, and gender. Characterizing this woman as a barbarian leader of war, the authors reveal not only their foundational ideologies but also the political projects underpinning their histories. This thesis will proceed in the following manner: I will provide 1) a …
A Narrative Inquiry Of Selected Women’S Career Pathways To State-Level Leadership In Agriculture, Timothy Keown
A Narrative Inquiry Of Selected Women’S Career Pathways To State-Level Leadership In Agriculture, Timothy Keown
All Dissertations
In this study, I used a qualitative narrative inquiry to examine stories from three individually selected state-level agricultural sector women leaders as they described their career paths to leadership roles. This purpose of the study was to address the problem of a lack of practical understanding of women leaders’ experiences in pursuing, achieving, and keeping leadership roles within the agricultural industry. The existing literature shows that women are less likely to hold an agriculture leadership role in their career. To establish the research question, I used feminist educational theory. This theoretical framework and the associated epistemology of narrative inquiry served …
Creative Problem Solving Using Visual Thinking, Jacob L. Ravnborg
Creative Problem Solving Using Visual Thinking, Jacob L. Ravnborg
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Creative Problem Solving Using Visual Thinking
This project explores the concept of visual and semantic thinking and how they can be incorporated into Creative Problem Solving sessions. Visual thinking is the ability to conjure mental images as part of the thinking process. This type of thinking is hard-wired into the human brain and can be seen in individual behavior and language. Meanwhile, semantic thinking is using language and grammar to convey meaning. It is a sequential process that depends on cultural and social references. The project argues that both types of thinking are essential and recommends specific guidelines for including …

The purpose of this project was to explore biomimicry and integrating forms of nature to generate unique ideas and possible solutions to problems. Four key components of this project were biomimicry, brainstorming, forced connections, and innovation to answer the question: What can I learn about imagination, forced connections, process, mindset, and innovation by copying aspects of nature or being inspired by nature? A Biomimicry and Forced Connections Design Journal contained conceptual designs based on nature or a challenge-to-nature searching for solutions. A Reflective Learning Journal included prior experiences and working on this project that contributed to my knowledge and insights. …
Building A New Bridge: Justin Favela's Puente Nuevo, Kelley Yost
Building A New Bridge: Justin Favela's Puente Nuevo, Kelley Yost
Theses
This thesis analyzes an installation work, Puente Nuevo, created in 2019 by artist Justin Favela at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. In this large-scale, piñata-like mural, Favela asserts his Latinx identity while questioning cultural stereotypes and viewer expectations with a sense of humor and irony. The unique materiality of Favela’s work, based in the folk art forms of papel picado and cartonería, transforms spaces into immersive environments that are fun and provocative, and capable of housing darker associations as well. He builds layers of meaning into his pieces by revising historic works, such as picturesque landscapes by Casimiro …
Heat Stress Effects On Culex Pipiens Mosquitoes, Valeria Montoya
Heat Stress Effects On Culex Pipiens Mosquitoes, Valeria Montoya
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Extreme weather events such as heat waves are becoming more frequent. This is a concern for both humans and other organisms like insects. Culex pipiens f. molestus mosquitoes are primary vectors of diseases including equine encephalitis, West Nile virus, Rift valley fever, and St. Louis encephalitis. With Cx. pipiens f. molestus being the primary vector of West Nile virus in North America, it is important to understand how more frequent heat waves affect their population dynamics. In this study, I compared the thermal tolerance of larval Cx. pipiens f. molestus that were exposed to prior heat stress to those that …
Equipping And Mobilizing Parents And Guardians Of Middle Schoolers To Disciple Their Children Through The Ministry Of Parents Of Middle Schoolers (Poms), Mary Kate Hipp
Christian Ministries Senior Capstone
Parents within the church are facing a pandemic of feelings of inadequacy in terms of discipling their teens. Modern culture has largely shifted responsibilities away from parents and onto professionals at church, for developing the spiritual dimension of their adolescent. Yet, the familial influence of an adolescent supersedes the influence of any youth worker. Youth workers should neither be the foundation of an adolescent’s spirituality nor the cosmetic finishing. In a Christian home, parents and guardians have the high privilege to influence and lead the spiritual formation of their children. The church was granted the high privilege and honor to …

Synaptic Properties Of Parabigeminal Circuits., Kyle Whyland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Subcortical structures of the visual system have been the subject of intense study in recent years, but there remain some important unanswered questions regarding the synaptic relationships linking the nuclei that comprise this important sensory network within the brain. In these studies, we use several modern and traditional approaches, including viral tract tracing, in vitro slice physiology, immunohistochemistry, optogenetics, and electron microscopy to characterize the circuits linking the superior colliculus (SC), parabigeminal nucleus (PBG), and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), with particular focus on GABAergic and cholinergic cell types. We found that the SC, an important visuomotor structure with connections to …
