Effects Of Nonnative Plants On Space-Use In Eastern Box Turtles, Emily Ilene Crago May 2023

Effects Of Nonnative Plants On Space-Use In Eastern Box Turtles, Emily Ilene Crago

Graduate Theses

Introduction of nonnative plants outside their natural range has caused widespread reduction in the abundance and diversity of native plant species. Nonnative plants typically form dense, often monotypic, thickets that affect the ability of animals to find food, reproduce, avoid predation risk, and thermoregulate. By doing so, nonnative plants have the potential to displace resident animals from areas otherwise suitable as animal habitat. However, limited studies have investigated whether resident animals avoid areas dominated by nonnative plants. This study investigated impacts of nonnative plants on eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina), a species that has been declining throughout their range. …

The Evolution Of The Jinn In Middle Eastern Culture And Literature From Pre-Islam To The Modern Age, Caroline Ford May 2023

The Evolution Of The Jinn In Middle Eastern Culture And Literature From Pre-Islam To The Modern Age, Caroline Ford

World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Undergraduate Honors Theses

The legends of the jinn, romanized as djinn and anglicized as genies, have long been a part of mystical story telling tradition. The modern-day genies of Western film are lovable and comedic tricksters who grant wishes to the master that uncovers them, but this depiction is a far cry from their origin point in the Ancient Middle Eastern region known as Mesopotamia. Here they began as powerful nature spirits inspiring poets, soothsayers, and philosophers by sharing messages of the unseen world. The modern Western depiction of the jinn is devoid of cultural and historical context. The very name “jinn” is …

Linear Waltz With Nature: A Self-Supporting Infrastructure In Nature, Shangkun Zhong May 2023

Linear Waltz With Nature: A Self-Supporting Infrastructure In Nature, Shangkun Zhong

Architecture Senior Theses

This project aims to create a sustainable system that addresses waste management issues in urban areas by examining the functionality of recycling infrastructures and how they can be integrated. The system will absorb waste and convert it into renewable energy to support a field station in Tibet, where self-sustainability is critical, due to the remote location. Architects often demonstrate their understanding of sustainability through various means such as integration, passive/energy-saving, and natural architecture. This thesis argues that a sustainable system such as CopenHill, can exemplify the combination of green-manifested design and recycle content as a sustainable cycle that supports human-nature …

Investigating The Psychology Of Morbid Curiosity: The Role Of Needing To Know, Hanna Rose Harbison Ruedisili

Psychology Honors Projects

The goal of this study was to investigate the psychological factors that motivate morbidly curious behavior, specifically the cognitive motivation to learn new information. Participants were shown various morbid and non-morbid control images, sometimes with a preview and sometimes without a preview. The preview condition created a situation in which the target image contained no new information, thereby removing the opportunity to learn more information. For each image, participants were asked to complete a visual search task unrelated to the content of the image as quickly as possible. If morbid content distracted participants from the visual search task, then response …

Mother Goddess As Mother Nature, Elizabeth Ungar May 2023

Mother Goddess As Mother Nature, Elizabeth Ungar

Senior Theses

This paper analyzes the connection between the Ancient Mother Goddess and the modern EcoFeminist movement by illustrating similar traits and symbolic images that they share. I first examine how far back the mother figure was praised in human history, and how images of the feminine body connect to the nurturing aspect of our Earth in Paleolithic times. I then analyze the Mother Goddess figure through three ancient religious Goddesses; the Hindu Goddess Devi and all of her embodiments, the Ancient Egyptian Goddess Isis, and the mother goddess Gaia in Greek mythology.

Animal Agriculture Is The Missing Piece In Climate Change Media Coverage, Coni Arévalo, Jo Anderson May 2023

Animal Agriculture Is The Missing Piece In Climate Change Media Coverage, Coni Arévalo, Jo Anderson

Agriculture

For many years now, climate researchers have been warning that the world can’t meet its Paris Agreement climate goals of limiting global warming to 1.5°C without reducing meat consumption. Multiple studies have affirmed that between 11.1 and 19.6% of global emissions come from meat and dairy production, and leading global food and climate agencies are also in agreement, recommending that people, particularly those in the Global North, reduce meat consumption in favor of a plant-rich diet.

The effects of animal agriculture on the environment and climate are vast: It is a leading cause of deforestation, it’s responsible …

I’Ll Be Goldenrod And You’Ll Be Aster: The Case For Revolutionizing Western Methods Of Teaching Using Indigenous Ontologies, Joanna Logerfo

Master's Theses

An interesting facet of living as a human in the 21st century is contending with the end of the world. It’s been imagined in a thousand ways over the past twenty years. Will it be zombies? Aliens? An AI revolution? Or will it perhaps be something more mundane, more “down-to-Earth”? The floods, the droughts, the famines, and all the rest of the cataclysmic global events that occur every year have taken center stage in the world-ending debate, parading under a name as threatening and expansive as the Boogeyman: climate change. A recent article from NPR covered the United Nations’ 2022 …

Gpr-160 Receptor Signaling In The Dorsal Vagal Complex Of Male Rats Modulates Meal Microstructure And Cart-Mediated Hypophagia, Marcos J. Sanchez-Navarro, Tito Borner, Benjamin C. Reiner, Richard C. Crist, Willis K. Samson, Gina L.C. Yosten, Lauren Stein, Matthew R. Hayes

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The g-protein coupled receptor GPR-160, recently identified as a putative receptor for the cocaine and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide, shows abundant expression in the energy-balance control nuclei, including the dorsal vagal complex (DVC). However, its physiological role in the control of food intake has yet to be fully explored. Here, we performed a virally mediated, targeted knockdown (KD) of Gpr160 in the DVC of male rats to evaluate its physiological role in control of feeding. Our results indicate that DVC Gpr160 KD affects meal microstructure. Specifically, DVC Gpr160 KD animals consumed more frequent, but shorter meals during the dark phase …

Investigating The Role Of Cytochrome P450 Enzymes In Triazole Drug Efficacy And Toxicity In Whole Organism Zebrafish Model, Heather Cosh

Honors College Theses

Invasive fungal infections account for nearly 1.5 million deaths a year and therefore are considered one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The first line of therapy towards these infections are antifungal drugs in the triazole class such as voriconazole, posaconazole, itraconazole, and isavuconazole. However, these antifungal drug therapies fail in a large number of patients and can produce toxic side effects, therefore increasing the risk of mortality worldwide. While prior research has demonstrated the efficacy of these drugs in mitigating fungal growth in vitro, it is unclear why these drugs fail to protect patients infected with fungal …

“Beauty And The Beast” And The Representation Of The Female: How Fairy Tales Reinforce And Influence Our Current Understanding Of Gender Roles, Elizabeth N. Tran

English (MA) Theses

This thesis aims to contribute to the scholarship on young adult speculative fiction and its pivotal role in subverting the rigid gender roles that have been reinforced since the ancient world of fairy tales. To do so, I will explore Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s “Beauty and the Beast” through the lens of various feminist literary theories and overlapping discourses in gender studies. I intend to analyze and critique the ways in which this classic fairy tale has influenced the representation of the female as “Beauty” and the male as “Beast” in contemporary texts, especially in the YA speculative fiction genre. …

“Everything And Nothing”: Exhibiting Irishness At The Chicago World Fair Of 1893, Jessica Bocinski May 2023

“Everything And Nothing”: Exhibiting Irishness At The Chicago World Fair Of 1893, Jessica Bocinski

English (MA) Theses

This project employs a cultural studies approach to investigate the overlapping productions of Irish identity at the Irish Villages of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Conceptualized and designed by two British philanthropists and businesswomen, the Irish Villages presented an Irishness shaped by Ireland’s long history of colonial rule. For Irish Americans living in the United States during the late nineteenth century, the Irish Villages offered a particularly well-suited opportunity to present an identity that would facilitate their acceptance into American society. Rather than challenging or negating the colonial representations of Irishness that existed at places like the Chicago World’s …

Solar Grazing As A Possible Vegetation Management Solution: A Budget Analysis, Byron Louk May 2023

Solar Grazing As A Possible Vegetation Management Solution: A Budget Analysis, Byron Louk

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses

A growing response to climate change among agricultural producers is to integrate renewable energy production in their portfolio of enterprises. Nonetheless, land use competition for agricultural production and solar energy production exists. To alleviate some of this competition, and possibly generate income for sheep grazers, photovoltaic (PV) system operators may save on operations and maintenance by grazing forages under solar panels rather than using mechanical or chemical means of vegetation management. “Solar grazing” operations have been shown to be economically feasible for PV system operators who own the land and pay for sheep grazing as a method of vegetation management, …

Weathering With: Afterlife Treatment Of Architecture, Tianhui Li May 2023

Weathering With: Afterlife Treatment Of Architecture, Tianhui Li

Architecture Senior Theses

When thinking about afterlife of architecture, one would imagine architecture’s incapability of maintain its form due to its deterioration. Humans tear down buildings to construct new buildings, or update building by replacing damaged parts.

However recent study indicates that the traditional human-architecture relationship will end in the near future due to population increase and global warming. As humans lose more and more habitable lands, the remaining architecture on inhabitable lands will be abandoned. This raises the question of who then decides the fate of the abandoned architecture. This thesis sees weathering as the answer to the question and reimagines the …

Assessing The Effects Of Pergolide On The Motivational Aspects Of Depression In Rats Using Operant Conditioning, Theresa Marciano May 2023

Assessing The Effects Of Pergolide On The Motivational Aspects Of Depression In Rats Using Operant Conditioning, Theresa Marciano

Honors Scholar Theses

Pergolide is an ergot derivative dopamine agonist which acts on the dopamine D2 and D3, alpha2- and alpha1-adrenergic, and 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors. It was previously used as a treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but was taken off of the market as a result of causing increased risk of heart disease. As a dopamine agonist, pergolide stimulates D2 receptors, which are associated with improvement of symptoms of movement disorders. This link exists because the highest concentration of D2 receptors in the brain is in the basal ganglia, which is involved in motor control. Given the connection between pergolide, dopamine, and …

Corruption In The U.S. Pharmaceutical Industry, Anna Woelfel

Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

A story that has to be told too often is that of the people who cannot afford lifesaving medications, and as a result do not survive. Doctor Nicky Mehtani says that the inability of a patient to afford their medication can be a common cause of death. This is an answer not accepted by grieving family members who have lost a loved one. It is estimated that more than a fourth of people in the United States needing medical treatment struggle with payment or simply cannot afford to pay for the lifesaving medications that they need (Mehtani, 2018). Deteriorating American …

Old School Versus New School? Are Visually Stimulating Syllabi More Effective In Retaining Course Information In Contrast To Text-Based Syllabi?, Karalee Taves

Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

The students of Generation Z have been affected by the increase in technology and no longer have the same learning methods and techniques as former generations. These students notice improved knowledge and comprehension when using modern approaches in education. However, there is more room for updates in education. Instructors are accustomed to traditional, text-based syllabi that are overloaded with information, making it difficult to read and understand, while lacking conciseness.

With the use of technology, students have adapted to the use of visually stimulating methods. In the integration of modern-day learning, syllabi have not been updated to follow these standards. …
