Racial Reconciliation: A Biblical Framework, Rodney D. Chrisman
Racial Reconciliation: A Biblical Framework, Rodney D. Chrisman
Liberty University Law Review
American society is greatly polarized and divided on many issues, including issues relative to racial reconciliation. Attempts at progress in this area are impeded by the United States’s historical backdrop of slavery, the statesponsored oppression of Jim Crow laws, and personal racism, among other complications. Even the American church tolerated and justified these racial divides. Modern discussions are plagued by the widespread misuse of important terms as well as disagreements on what racial reconciliation looks like and how to achieve it. Starting from the belief that God has spoken authoritatively on all issues, this article attempts to provide a biblical …
Basal Metabolic Rate As A Potential Determinant In Risk Sensitive Foraging., Kathryn Van Maanen, Eric S. Long, Baine B. Craft
Basal Metabolic Rate As A Potential Determinant In Risk Sensitive Foraging., Kathryn Van Maanen, Eric S. Long, Baine B. Craft
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
In foraging, there are many possible determinants of an individual’s sensitivity to risk, such as an animal’s learning or various biological imperatives. However, few studies on risk sensitivity incorporate information about an animal’s metabolism. One measure of metabolic rate is basal metabolic rate (BMR), or the minimum rate at which metabolism must produce energy to maintain homeostasis, which is highly plastic. Therefore, we investigated a potential relationship between risk sensitivity and BMR. This metaanalysis revealed little to no relationship between BMR and risk sensitivity, perhaps because of the high intraspecific variation of each of these traits.

Effects Of Nmda Inhibition Of Rodent Decision-Making And Reward-Seeking Behavior, Hoda Aboueich, Hannah Doble, Seth Foust, Brandon Goh, Michael Mains, Bailey Wells, Phillip Baker
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
In this study, we are investigating the relationship between NMDA receptor antagonists and decision-making. Rats choose between a Fixed-Delay (FD) lever that dispensed a sugar pellet in ten-second intervals and a Progressive-Delay (PD) lever that dispensed a sugar pellet at progressively increasing time intervals of one second. After training on the optimal decision-making task, rats were injected with MK-801 in a randomized sequence of doses of 0.06 mL/g, 0.1 mL/ 0.2mL/g with saline as the control. Analysis of behaviors in relation to optimal choices is ongoing in relation to the varying doses of MK-801.
Machine Learning Analysis For Animal Behavior In Predator-Exposed Rodents, Hoda Aboueich, Michael Mains, Bailey Wells, Phillip Bakee
Machine Learning Analysis For Animal Behavior In Predator-Exposed Rodents, Hoda Aboueich, Michael Mains, Bailey Wells, Phillip Bakee
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
Using machine learning analysis, we analyzed both rats and mice of different strain, sex, age, and housing in order to evaluate behavioral differences in exposure to a 3D printed owl predator that surges toward the center of an arena. As the rodent responded to the stimulus, we were able to evaluate behavioral patterns, such as time spent in hiding, freezing, fleeing, or near the walls of the arena. This will allow us to look at the overall movement trajectories prior to and during predator exposure across species.

Practice Makes Progress: Using The Lifespan Course As An Example For Role-Play Implementation, Emily Horton, Ed Jacobs
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
This conceptual article addresses specific clinical and practical implications for the utilization of role-play in the human growth and development course. Specific approaches to integrating role-play into the human growth and development course, including what we coin as Structured Role-Play, Semi-Structured Role-Play, and Unstructured Role-Play implementation strategies, are discussed at length. Sample vignettes and experiential activities for each developmental stage are provided. Finally, we address ethical considerations regarding role-play implementation.
The Gatt-Legality Of Border Adjustments For Carbon Taxes And The Cost Of Emissions Permits: A Riddle, Wrapped In A Mystery, Inside An Enigma, Charles E. Mclure Jr.
The Gatt-Legality Of Border Adjustments For Carbon Taxes And The Cost Of Emissions Permits: A Riddle, Wrapped In A Mystery, Inside An Enigma, Charles E. Mclure Jr.
Florida Tax Review
This article examines the GATT-legality of BTAs for carbon taxes and BAs for the cost of emissions permits. At least six primary questions (and many subsidiary ones) arise: (1) whether the border tax adjustments that convert an origin-based carbon tax to a destination-based tax are consistent with the basic rules governing international trade, (2) if not, whether an exception might be granted under Article XX of the GATT, (3) whether the conclusions regarding BTAs for carbon taxes would be valid for BAs for the cost of emissions permits that are purchased from governments, (4) whether free allocation of allowances (the …

Effect Of Three Legumes Containing Different Condensed Tannin Concentrations On The In Vitro Formation Of The Pastoral Flavour Compound; Skatole, N. M. Schreurs, M. H. Tavendale, G. A. Lane, T. N. Barry, W. C. Mcnabb
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Feeding legumes, such as white clover (Trifolium repens), results in higher intakes and increased animal production compared to grasses (Ulyatt, 1981). Skatole is produced in the rumen from plant protein fermentation and is associated with undesirable pastoral flavours in meat (Young et al. 2002). Feeding white clover causes a greater skatole concentration in the rumen compared to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) or Lotus corniculatus, as the protein in white clover is highly soluble and rapidly degraded (Schreurs et al., 2004). The condensed tannins (CT) in Lotus species slow protein degradation in the rumen (Aerts …

Shearing Strength And Chemical Composition In The Selection For Quality In Brachiaria Brizantha, Cacilda B. Valle, F. E. Torres, B. Lempp
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Selection of quality pasture forages for productivity, nutritive value and animal performance require long-term, expensive trials. Simpler and accurate techniques to detect quality differences among genotypes have been proposed (Mackinnon et al., 1988; Hughes et al., 2000). This paper discusses the use of shearing strength in Brachiaria brizantha ecotypes to correlate physical traits with chemical composition: the objective being the identification of cultivars of improved quality forage suitable to the savannas of Brazil.

Growth Characteristics Of Superior Lines Of Zoysia Grass (Zoysia Japonica) And Development Of Its Dna Markers, Y. W. Rim, K. Y. Kim, M. J. Kim, B. R. Sung, Y. C. Lim, E. S. Chung
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Demand for turf grass has steadily increased for recreation and sport fields after the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup in Korea. Zoysia grass has the advantage of easy management, including low water and fertiliser requirement, but has limitations such as low recovery, low shoot density and short green period (Kim et al., 1999). Objectives of this research were to select superior lines in the collected clones, compare the superior lines of zoysia grass with other standard cultivars for growth characteristics and to develop the DNA markers of superior lines.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Agricultural systems that reduce environmental degradation, sustain agricultural productivity and economic viability, maintain stable rural communities, enhance the quality of life and respond to increasing demand for livestock products are promoted in developed countries. Though major challenges exist, forage legumes, adapted to a wide range of soil types, climatic conditions and management systems, will become increasingly important components of sustainable agricultural production systems in Europe. Temporal and spatial variation in legume performance often occurs. Compared to pure grass systems, legume-based systems may lead to increased N losses. To what extent ruminants can use the protein from forage legumes, and whether …

Don’T Say Gay: An Examination Of Florida’S Restrictive Education Policies And Potential Alternatives, Mikey Redding
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Following the signing of Florida’s HB 1577, also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, an influx of discriminatory and exclusionary bills were introduced across the country, reflecting a deeply concerning turn for education standards in the United States. The policy under scrutiny is the Florida bill by Governor Ron DeSantis that began this wave of harmful legislation, which has significant costs for queer and trans youth living in states considering similar regression in their education standards. The central part of the bill being scrutinized is the portion that denies educators the right to discuss gender identity and sexual orientation …
Arsenic Removal From Drinking Water Using Enhanced Biochar, Piper Klinger, Janice Lee, Phillip Thompson
Arsenic Removal From Drinking Water Using Enhanced Biochar, Piper Klinger, Janice Lee, Phillip Thompson
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Naturally occurring arsenic, in the soluble form of arsenate, contaminates groundwater resources for millions of people worldwide (WHO, 2018). While there are several technologies available to remediate arsenic contaminated water, the most effective approaches are expensive to implement and maintain, especially for people who are living in poverty. This research studied an inexpensive method for removing arsenate from drinking water by using enhanced biochar. The treatment method was developed by simulating a process that could be adopted by a low-income family. Aspen wood chips were treated with a 10% (by mass) MgCl2 or MgSO4 solution and were then pyrolyzed in …
Service Dogs And Their Impact On Psychological Well-Being And Anxiety, Zack Hower, Baine Craft, Jenny Lee Vaydich
Service Dogs And Their Impact On Psychological Well-Being And Anxiety, Zack Hower, Baine Craft, Jenny Lee Vaydich
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
Service dogs are highly skilled animals that assist disabled individuals. The Americans with Disability Act was passed in 1990, which legalized the use of service dogs. Since then, there has been a growing demand for one to obtain a service dog for their disability. Though the popularity of owning a service dog has increased, there is limited research that supports the notion that psychological well-being improves and anxiety decreases as a result of having a service dog. The current proposal seeks to explore whether or not service dogs contribute to changes in psychological well-being and anxiety.
Relationship Between Sex And Mk801'S Effects In Rats., Emily Mccurry, Erica Sanchez, Seth Foust
Relationship Between Sex And Mk801'S Effects In Rats., Emily Mccurry, Erica Sanchez, Seth Foust
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
In this study, we are investigating the effects of MK-801 on male and female Sprague Dawley rats. According to D’Souza et al. (2001), females have a stronger reaction to MK-801 than males. Correspondingly, the current study measures the varied effects of MK-801 on rat models using an optimal decision-making task. The rats are injected with doses of MK-801. Then, they choose between a Fixed-Delay (FD) (ten-second intervals) and a Progressive-Delay (PD) lever (one second progressive increase) to receive rewards. We are currently in the process of obtaining results analyzing the relationship between sex and MK-801’s effects.

Coronal Magnetometry And Energy Release In Solar Flares, Yuqian Wei
Coronal Magnetometry And Energy Release In Solar Flares, Yuqian Wei
Dissertations
As the most energetic explosive events in the solar system and a major driver for space weather, solar flares need to be thoroughly understood. However, where and how the free magnetic energy stored in the corona is released to power the solar flares remains not well understood. This lack of understanding is, in part, due to the paucity of coronal magnetic field measurements and the lack of comprehensive understanding of nonthermal particles produced by solar flares. This dissertation focuses on studies that utilize microwave imaging spectroscopy observations made by the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) to diagnose the nonthermal …

Development Of Non-Viral Nano-Carriers For Gene Delivery And Covid-19 Vaccines, Zhongyu Li
Development Of Non-Viral Nano-Carriers For Gene Delivery And Covid-19 Vaccines, Zhongyu Li
Dissertations
Gene therapy is one of the most promising medical fields with the potential to effectively advance the treatment of difficult diseases by producing therapeutic proteins or repairing defective gene sequences. However, gene therapy presents severe challenges in delivery including renal clearance, phagocytosis, enzymatic degradation, protein absorption, and cellular internalization barriers, which have been barriers for translation into the clinic. Naked nucleic acids, with their intrinsic negative charge, electrostatically repulse the anionic cell membrane, preventing cellular uptake. Also, they are considered foreign genetic material when introduced into the body and are rapidly cleared by the reticuloendothelial system or degraded by nucleases, …
Development Of Novel Nanocarbon Based Materials And Membranes With Enhanced Biocidal Capabilities For Clean Water Generation, Indrani Gupta
Development Of Novel Nanocarbon Based Materials And Membranes With Enhanced Biocidal Capabilities For Clean Water Generation, Indrani Gupta
Dissertations
Water scarcity is one of the major challenges facing humanity today, driven by population growth, economic development, and dietary shifts towards more water-intensive animal products. To address this issue, efficient water resource management and recycling of wastewater are essential. However, around 80% of wastewater globally is discharged into water bodies without treatment, posing a risk to ecosystems and human health. Pathogens, or harmful microorganisms, are a primary cause of water impairment and the transmission of waterborne diseases, leading to increased mortality rates. Traditional methods of treating pathogens involve the use of radiation or chemical disinfectants. Nonetheless, these methods have drawbacks, …

The Radioprotectant Nano-Genistein Enhances Radiotherapy Efficacy Of Lung Tumors In Mice, Michael D. Kaytor, Artur A. Serebrenik, Karen Lapanowski, Debra Mcfall, Matthew Jones, Benjamin Movsas, Charles B. Simone Ii, Stephen L. Brown
Radiation Oncology Articles
BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can be dose-limiting due to treatment-related toxicities. Genistein has been shown to be a robust radioprotective agent in preclinical models. A novel genistein oral nanosuspension formulation (nano-genistein) has demonstrated efficacy in mitigating radiation-induced lung damage in preclinical animal models. However, while those studies have confirmed that nano-genistein can protect normal lung tissue from radiation-induced toxicities, no studies have assessed the effect of nano-genistein on lung tumors. Here, we evaluated the impact of nano-genistein on the efficacy of radiation treatment of lung tumors in a mouse xenograft model.
METHODS: Two separate studies were …
Field Observations And An Herbarium Study To Understand Plant Reproductive Phenology In Areas Surrounding The Mississippi River, Caitlyn Marie Sims
Field Observations And An Herbarium Study To Understand Plant Reproductive Phenology In Areas Surrounding The Mississippi River, Caitlyn Marie Sims
Student Theses and Dissertations
Plant phenology – the timing of cyclical phases during development – is sensitive to environmental and climatic factors. This thesis focuses on two main factors driving plant reproductive phenology, inundation from flooding and temperature. In Chapter 2, I examine phenological shifts of six taxa along the elevation gradient of a Lower Mississippi River island in response to flood regime. Analyses showed that five out of six taxa responded to flooding, such that their mature fruiting onset, peak, and/or cessation events were shifted in association with elevation, but only two taxa had all three phenological events shifted. Additionally, the total reproductive …
Making Space In The Cemetery: Encroachment And Expansion In Manila North Cemetery, Philippines, Carl Russel R. Reyes
Making Space In The Cemetery: Encroachment And Expansion In Manila North Cemetery, Philippines, Carl Russel R. Reyes
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Although the cemetery is considered as an enclosed space with limited potential for expansion, dwelling has occurred in the Manila North Cemetery (MNC) for decades. This paper examines how its dwellers secure access and sustain life in the cemetery, despite periodic clearing operations by the government and other pressures. The persistence of cemetery dwellers despite these challenges demonstrates Bayat’s (2010) “quiet encroachment of the ordinary,” this protracted intrusion of the poor in the city. Three aspects of “quiet encroachment” proved crucial in sustaining cemetery life: First, the occupation of caretaking embedded dwellers in the space’s operation. This allowed negotiations between …

Comparing Teaching Methods For Auditory-Visual Conditional Discrimination, Brady Conley, Robbie Hanson
Theses
Responding to spoken language is a skill that is typically acquired at a young age. However, responding to spoken language requires discrimination between stimuli. Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have demonstrated difficulty acquiring listener behavior involving conditional discrimination. Thus, the most efficient and effective teaching strategies should continue to be a focus in behavior-analytic research. The purpose of the current study was to compare teaching methods for conditional discrimination for three school-aged children with ASD. The results showed that one participant met criterion for the best practice condition only, one participant met criterion for both best practice and …
What You Don’T Know Matters: An Ignorance-Focused Investigation Of Theory Of Mind, Steven M. Shin, Jonathan S. Phillips
What You Don’T Know Matters: An Ignorance-Focused Investigation Of Theory Of Mind, Steven M. Shin, Jonathan S. Phillips
Cognitive Science Senior Theses
This project examines the ways in which knowledge, or ignorance, impact healthy adults’ theory of mind (i.e. their considerations of others’ mental states). In a pilot study, and four experiments, an effect is found which supports the hypothesis that knowledge states influence the execution of theory of mind. The present findings suggest that attention is directed differently when participants reason from positions of knowledge, or positions of ignorance, in regard to a task-relevant fact. This project provides a starting point for further research, investigating the rich contextual contributions to the fluent functioning of the ‘theory of mind system.’
