Tio2 Coating Methods On Sb2o3 And Their Use As Anode Material In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Kithzia Czarina Gomez

Theses and Dissertations

The following thesis is concentrated on the development of TiO2Sb2O3 composite material through the hydrolysis of TiCl4 to be applied as anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Antimony (Sb) has been a material of interest due to its high capacity and good chemical properties. The TiO2 accommodated the harsh volume expansion that Sb encounters during the alloying process while still preserving the high capacity offered by Sb. Its electrochemical performance exhibited a stabilized capacity of 523 mAhg-1 after reaching 40 cycles with a capacity loss of 2.4% till reaching 100 cycles. High reversible capacity characteristics were present with an initial capacity …

A Trait-Based Approach To Explain Plant Coexistence In Tropical Forests, Felipe Nery Arantes Mello Jul 2023

A Trait-Based Approach To Explain Plant Coexistence In Tropical Forests, Felipe Nery Arantes Mello

Dissertations (1934 -)

Ecology seeks to explain the mechanisms that allow multiple species to coexist in the same habitat without one species outcompeting or driving others to extinction. Niche differentiation is a mechanism that has been proposed to allow species to coexist through specialization on different resources or habitats, which reduces competition and the probability of competitive exclusion. Species can reduce competition by using different combinations of resources and thus partitioning available resources in time and space. Differences in resource use is hypothesized to be influenced by species’ morphological and physiological adaptations, known as functional traits. Links between functional traits and abiotic factors …

Informal Education Builds Deeper Knowledge And Connections With Elasmobranchs To Develop An Understanding For Environmental Conservation, Lacie Ownbey

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Zoos and aquariums provide essential tools and opportunities to help get school aged children out of the classroom for informal education and learning. Using facilities that offer programs where the focus is on both entertainment and education, learning can be maximized to obtain literacy of a subject. That level of understanding can be then used to promote conservation and pro-environmental thinking for animals that could most benefit from a more focused setting, such as a non-charismatic megafauna: elasmobranchs (sharks and rays). Using Backward Design, where the goals of the program were determined first, a two-day Shark Researcher Camp was created …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is a novel non-invasive brain stimulation technique with high depth penetrance and spatial resolution. Theta-burst TUS (tbTUS) is a plasticity-inducing protocol which increases motor cortical excitability for up to 30 min following 80s of sonication. While this protocol may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders, the mechanisms of action of TUS remain unclear.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted the first pharmacological study to examine the mechanisms of TUS in human primary motor cortex. By administering brain-active drugs with known mechanisms of action, we aimed to elucidate the mechanisms of tbTUS.

METHODS: Fourteen …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cyanobacteria are frequently associated with forming toxic blooms. The toxins produced by cyanobacteria, cyanotoxins, are harmful to both humans and animals. Rising temperatures due to global climate change are expected to increase the occurrence of cyanobacteria, and it is vital that we protect our drinking water supplies and natural water resources. Modeling the production, fate, and transport of these toxins is an important step in limiting exposure to them and evaluating management strategies to mitigate their impact. The research provided here offers an overview of some of the main cyanotoxins of concern and presents preliminary models for the transport and …

Evaluation Of Amnion Membrane Made Vascular Graft In Rat Model And Porcine Model, Xiaolong Wang

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Heart bypass surgery has become a common therapeutic strategy to save heart attack patients from death. However, there are issues with the availability of graft resources for patients who cannot use autologous vessels due to their health conditions. To solve this problem, this study aims to develop a small-diameter vascular graft based on the human decellularized amniotic membrane (DAM) as an alternative to autologous vessels. The human amniotic membrane was harvested from the placenta, obtained from consenting and de-identified donors, and decellularized to remove cellular components while preserving its extracellular matrix. Small-diameter vascular grafts were fabricated using the DAM as …

Trinitarian Theology As A Resource For The Theology Of Education, Anne Bullock Jul 2023

Trinitarian Theology As A Resource For The Theology Of Education, Anne Bullock

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The character of Catholic education has been variously described but is often associated with educating the whole person, a statement that is usually inadequately explored. In the first place, this “holistic” approach is often reduced to character education, which is an insufficient explanation of what makes Catholic schools distinctive. Moreover, the approach relies on a dense theological account of the human person, which can make it difficult to integrate into the daily reality of school life. This thesis critiques some insufficient approaches to Catholic education in light of the Church’s vision for education, beginning with Vatican II and Gravissimis Educationis …

1. Invasive species management can benefit from predictive models that incorporate spatially explicit demographics and dispersal to guide resource allocation decisions.
2. We used invasive bigheaded carps (Hypophthalmichthys spp.) in the Illinois River, USA as a case study to create a spatially explicit model to evaluate the allocation of future management efforts. Specifically, we compared additional harvest (e.g. near the invasion front vs. source populations) and enhanced movement deterrents to meet the management goal of reducing abundance at the invasion front.
3. We found additional harvest in lower river pools (i.e. targeting source populations) more effectively limited population sizes upriver …

Transcorporeal Habitus: Adapting Sociological Embodiment To The Self-Conscious Anthropocene, Trevor Bleick Jul 2023

Transcorporeal Habitus: Adapting Sociological Embodiment To The Self-Conscious Anthropocene, Trevor Bleick

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The knowledge that humans have become a geological force necessitates a reimagining of what it means to be human. This thesis explores the ways in which bodies (both human and nonhuman) are represented within the self-conscious Anthropocene. This tripartite analysis, synthesized in the term ‘transcorporeal habitus,’ presents a framework through which we can better understand the ways bodies are entangled within a greater ecosystem. By drawing on the works of scholars in the fields of sociology, ecocriticism, and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) this thesis provides the groundwork for reimaging humanness in a period of immense change. Sympatric Soil Microbe Interactions Between Streptomyces And Fusarium Isolates, Lehren A. Olk-Szost Jul 2023

Sympatric Soil Microbe Interactions Between Streptomyces And Fusarium Isolates, Lehren A. Olk-Szost

All NMU Master's Theses

Interkingdom interactions between soil bacteria and fungi may play a critical role in occurrence of disease suppressive soils, yet our understanding of these interactions remains limited. Streptomyces are well-known producers of antimicrobial compounds important to medicine and agriculture. Production of these secondary metabolites is often mediated by quorum sensing. Most Streptomyces research occurs in single species experiments, yet new metabolites have been discovered in interspecies co-culture experiments. Interspecies, intergenic, and interkingdom co-culture research will likely reveal many valuable compounds, and strengthen our understanding of complex ecological interactions in soil microbiomes. Interactions between sympatric Streptomyces and Fusarium isolates from disease suppressive …

Do-Good: Towards Distribution Shift Evaluation For Pre-Trained Visual Document Understanding Models, Jiabang He, Yi Hu, Lei Wang, Xing Xu, Ning Liu, Hui Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Numerous pre-training techniques for visual document understanding (VDU) have recently shown substantial improvements in performance across a wide range of document tasks. However, these pre-trained VDU models cannot guarantee continued success when the distribution of test data differs from the distribution of training data. In this paper, to investigate how robust existing pre-trained VDU models are to various distribution shifts, we first develop an out-of-distribution (OOD) benchmark termed Do-GOOD for the fine-Grained analysis on Document image-related tasks specifically. The Do-GOOD benchmark defines the underlying mechanisms that result in different distribution shifts and contains 9 OOD datasets covering 3 VDU related …

Suspicious Behavior Detection With Temporal Feature Extraction And Time-Series Classification For Shoplifting Crime Prevention, Amril Nazir, Rohan Mitra, Hana Sulieman, Firuz Kamalov

All Works

The rise in crime rates in many parts of the world, coupled with advancements in computer vision, has increased the need for automated crime detection services. To address this issue, we propose a new approach for detecting suspicious behavior as a means of preventing shoplifting. Existing methods are based on the use of convolutional neural networks that rely on extracting spatial features from pixel values. In contrast, our proposed method employs object detection based on YOLOv5 with Deep Sort to track people through a video, using the resulting bounding box coordinates as temporal features. The extracted temporal features are then …

Security Of Text To Image Conversions, Zobaida Alssadi Jul 2023

Theses and Dissertations

The use of images and icons to represent news or narratives has grown in popularity. Still, one critical problem is that they are not equivalent to language, making them vulnerable to adversary attacks. This study examines the impact of image-poisoning attacks based on polysemantic words and of image attacks based on cultural differences when converting text to images. Such attacks can lead to the loss of important information and create confusion and incorrect interpretations of the intended meaning, misinforming the general public. The study specifically focuses on possible effects in a news and story context. This study highlights the significance …

Lifting The Postmodern Veil: Cosmopolitanism, Humanism, And Decolonization In Global Fictions Of The 21st Century, Matthew Burchanoski

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation traces the shared concerns of globalism, cosmopolitanism, humanism, and decolonization through a selection of 21st century Anglophone Literature while I explore what each says about a contested contemporary literary era. I analyze four novels – Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost (2000), David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas (2004), Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad (2010), and Karen Joy Fowler’s We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves (2013) – and consider how they wrestle, implicitly and explicitly, with the history of the 21st century and its effect on formal innovation and literary periodization. To do so, I look at humanism, cosmopolitanism, …

Improving Cold Tolerance Of Asian Rice Through Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria And Rice Gene Manipulation: Mechanisms Of Pseudomonas Mosselli And Osmads27, Nasim Maghboli Balasjin

Dissertations (1934 -)

It is estimated that by the year 2050, the human population will extend to 9.7 billion and therefore the demand for food will increase. It is important to find ways to maintain production of critical crops, like rice, to match the demand. Climate change affects crop productivity as it is the reason for extreme warm or cold weather fluctuations. Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) generally is grown in tropical and subtropical regions and thus, is sensitive to cold temperatures. This study hypothesized two strategies could improve growth and cold tolerance of rice plants: (1) use of plant growth promoting bacteria …

Existential Thomism And The Ecstasy Of The Sexed Body, Kathleen Cavender-Mccoy Jul 2023

Existential Thomism And The Ecstasy Of The Sexed Body, Kathleen Cavender-Mccoy

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation assesses the relevance and significance of Norris Clarke’s existential Thomism to critiques of John Paul II’s theology of the body. I argue that using existential Thomism as a basis for Catholic metaphysics opens the door for an existential theology of the sexed body, a theology of the individual on a unique spiritual journey towards union with God which amends, expands, and nuances the existing theology of the ecstatic body developed by John Paul II. Chapter One situates my thesis within its historical context by tracing philosophical and theological developments which inform the current status of embodied sexual difference …

Breathing Around The Clock: Novel Circadian And Light-Driven Mechanisms That Govern Daily Breathing Behavior In Mice, Aaron Andrew Jones Jul 2023

Breathing Around The Clock: Novel Circadian And Light-Driven Mechanisms That Govern Daily Breathing Behavior In Mice, Aaron Andrew Jones

Dissertations (1934 -)

Breathing, like many physiological functions, exhibits a daily rhythm in mammals that coincides with periods of wakefulness and increased metabolic activity. Dysregulation of daily breathing rhythms has been implicated in a variety of respiratory diseases with time-specific symptomatology including sleep apnea, asthma, chronic pulmonary disease, sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, and COVID-19. While the daily rhythm in breathing is regulated by the endogenous circadian clock in the brain, the underlying physiological and cellular mechanisms modulating daily breathing behavior remain largely unknown. Light is the most potent synchronizer of the circadian system in mammals and is likely the principal driver of …
