Excerpt, Travels Through North And South Carolina, Georgia, East And West Florida, The Cherokee Country, The Extensive Territories Of The Muscogulges, Or Creek Confederacy, And The Country Of The Choctaws, William Bartram, Devin Pallone, Heather Wiseman

Early Visions Bucket

"Commissioned by the London physician John Fothergill to survey the land and catalog the flora and fauna, Bartram rambled through the southeastern colonies of North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama from 1774-1777. He filled the pages of journals with notes about the landscape, encounters with its inhabitants, and his reflections on what moved him most. He sketched quirky birds and sinuous plants. The result of his journals and letters was a book known as Travels, published in 1791, and circulated widely in the US and Europe."

John Kean To Susan Livingston, C. 1786 (19), John Kean

Liberty Hall Collection 1780s

John Kean wrote to Susan Livingston, unaddressed. John had been traveling for a handful of days through New Jersey and used this letter to explain his journey to Susan thus far. The first leg of the trip unfortunately was plagued by stormy weather and John was forced to stop at a tavern after only three miles. After the rain had subsided he went on to Bound Brook to spend the night there and in the morning went on to relatives of Susan. Next, John was then faced with the challenge of crossing a mountain range and compared himself to Hannibal …

The Discovery, Settlement And Present State Of Kentucke (1784) : An Online Electronic Text Edition, John Filson, Paul Royster (Editor)

Electronic Texts in American Studies

This is an open-access electronic text edition of Filson’s seminal work on the early history of Kentucky, including the first published account of the life and adventures of Daniel Boone. Filson’s work was an unabashedly optimistic account of the western territory, where Filson had acquired large land claims, whose value he sought to enhance by the publication of this advertisement and incitement for further settlement. Scarcely two years after the violent and tragic British and Indian invasion of 1782, Filson portrayed Kentucky as a natural paradise, where peace, plenty, and security reigned. Of some significance is Filson’s recognition that the …

Electronic Texts in American Studies

WILLIAM HENRY DRAYTON (1742–79), chief justice of South Carolina, Revolutionary leader, and wealthy plantation owner, was born near Charlestown. His family on both sides were wealthy planters and prominent politicians, enabling young William Henry to study in London and Oxford. Upon his return he married a South Carolina heiress, turned to politics, and was elected to the Assembly. Drayton championed the cause of British interest in the colonies and opposed such popular measures as the non-importation movement while defending the rights of the individual. Electronic Texts in American Studies

This is a regularized text of a private sermon or pamphlet manuscript, authored by a 23-year-old African American who had served in the “minuteman” militia and the Continental Army, and who became an ordained minister and was pastor to white Congregational churches for more than 50 years.

Haynes’ tract is an important and revelatory addition to the early anti-slavery literature in the American colonies. Only identified and published in 1983, it is uniquely situated at the crossroads of independence, anti-slavery, Congregationalism, and African-American identity. Brought to light by Ruth Bogin, the work is testimony to the diversity of thought and …

Early Visions Bucket

"The 'Report to Dr. John Fothergill,' by William Bartram (1739-1823), recounts the naturalist’s adventure through the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, which he related back to his London patron. Fothergill funded Bartram to explore the pre-Revolutionary South in order to gather and artistically document specimens. During this period, Bartram drew animals and plants, while also collecting “nondescript” (undescribed) flowers and seeds, and Fothergill related information about how to properly package and ship the parcels overseas. The 'Report' represents a record of an active communication between two naturalist and patron, and the samples and advice were tools of acknowledgement and admiration between …
