This brief account of the major engagement of the Pequot War appeared about six months after the Mystic Massacre of May 26, 1637. Its authorship is attributed to Philip Vincent, of whom little is known, including whether he was a witness or even in America, or, if not, who his informant was. The work obviously enjoyed some popularity, going through three separate editions in 1637–38.

This text, a Latin poem in dactylic hexameter with an accompanying English translation in heroic verse stands as the earliest surviving work of poetry about New England and the second oldest poem whose origins can be traced directly to the British American colonies. Only two copies of the original 1625 edition are known to survive; one is held at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, and the other is housed at the British Museum. The manuscript seen here is a copy of Thomas Kepis' Meditations, with Prayers, on the Life and Loving Kindness of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The front of the binding on this manuscript further call Christ into mind. Pressed into the leather are six images of animals, including a lion, peacock, pelican, and grifffin. The griffin and lion act as direct symbols of Christ as savior and the Resurrection. The peacock and pelican allude more indirectly to Christ through legend.

Calendar of saints' feast days from a French Book of Hours, use of Paris, which was evidently intact in the late 18th century when the descriptive note on the original first flyleaf was handwritten and dated 4 February 1792 by one 'Rouxeau', priest of Le Loroux-Bottereau. Rouxeau is assumed to be Julien-Pierre Rouxeau (1734-1811); the calendar as currently bound includes the 19th century bookplace of H. Arthur Baker.

The leaf begins the Prophesy of Ezekiel. A decorated initial "E" begins the prologue. The historiated initial "E," depicting Ezekiel sleeping with the vision of the four heads of the beasts above him, begins the incipit. The inclusion of halos above each beast's head points to Christian interpretation of the animals of the tetramorph as the four evangelists.
