Exploring The Effects Of Choline Treatment On Dystrophic Phenotype, Brooklyn Morris
Exploring The Effects Of Choline Treatment On Dystrophic Phenotype, Brooklyn Morris
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating progressive muscular disorder caused by a mutation in the dystrophin gene affecting approximately 1 in 3,500 males. However, despite its prevalence, there is currently no cure for this disease. Mutations in dystrophin lead to enhanced inflammation, fibrosis, cell death, development, and decreased skeletal muscle function. Phosphatidylcholine, synthesized by choline, is a major phospholipid that functions in maintaining and synthesizing cell membranes and has previously been found to be decreased in DMD patients. This led us to hypothesize that the dystrophic phenotype could be improved through treatment with choline. In this study, we used …

Comparative Analysis Of Motoneuronal C-Bouton Structural Alterations In Als And Aging, Shelby Nicole Ward
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor neuron (MN) death resulting in paralysis and eventually death. ALS has greater prevalence in older populations sharing characteristics with aging like muscle weakness and MN type specific degeneration. MNs innervate skeletal muscles and control muscle contraction through their excitability which is altered in both conditions. C-Boutons are a cholinergic, excitatory synaptic input to MNs and have been studied in ALS and aging but have produced inconsistent findings and undesired gaps. We used immunohistochemistry to label mouse lumbar spinal cord and separate MN types. 60x imaging and automated analysis was …

Calcium signaling is a crucial regulator in many cellular processes, from immune response modulation to gene expression and apoptosis. Here, I have investigated the dynamics of calcium entry pathways, namely, store-operated calcium entry and store-independent calcium entry using a variety of cell types such as Jurkat T cells, HEK-293 cells and murine macrophages. Using fluorescence calcium imaging and selective inhibitor compounds, I have investigated the contributions of Orai and related calcium channels to calcium entry in both immune and non-immune cell types. The results demonstrate the pharmacological modulation of store-operated and store-independent calcium entry, showing the ability of compounds such …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This research explores how motor neurons (MNs) and Kv2.1 clustering change with age, emphasizing sex differences and MN subtypes. We found that MN density decreases with age in both sexes, while soma size increases in male mice. FF MNs were the most affected, and old weak mice had smaller MNs than their stronger counterparts, underscoring FF MN vulnerability. Baseline studies revealed that FF and FI MNs have larger Kv2.1 clusters compared to FR and S MNs. Female mice had smaller, denser Kv2.1 clusters than male mice, suggesting less clustering in females. With age, Kv2.1 clusters grew larger but became less …

Investigating The Effects Of Human Astroviruses On Aquaporins And Tight Junction Proteins In Vitro, Makalia T. Robinson
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Human Astroviruses (HAstV) are positive sense non-enveloped single stranded RNA viruses. HAstV is divided into classical (serotype 1-8) and non-classical (HAstVMLB 1-3 and HAstV-VA1-5) astroviruses. Classical HAstV is known to cause diarrhea in children, elderly, and immunocompromised patients. Additionally, the etiology of nonclassical HAstV remains unknown. However, recent studies have implicated non-classical HAstV closely associated with immunocompromised patients diagnosed neurological diseases like acute encephalitis. The mechanisms by which HAstV cause diarrhea is currently unknown. Aquaporins (AQPs) are integral membrane proteins that regulate the movement of water and small uncharged molecules across the cell membrane in response to osmotic gradients. Tight …
The Price Of Criminal Law, Russell M. Gold
The Price Of Criminal Law, Russell M. Gold
Articles
Should tax dollars pay for more criminal law, better public schools, or a new community center? Different counties will answer the question differently, but facing these tradeoffs is profoundly important to democratic governance. Nonetheless, because the criminal legal system diffuses power and hides and offioads costs, officials and voters do not have to honestly consider that question. These structural features place a hidden thumb on the scale that gives counties more criminal enforcement than they pay for. That is a problem. Too much enforcement is particularly pernicious in criminal law: Incarceration inflicts tremendous suffering, especially in poor communities of color. …
Transgender Students And The First Amendment, Dara Purvis
Transgender Students And The First Amendment, Dara Purvis
Faculty Scholarship
Suppose a transgender child experiences teasing and harassment from their classmates, whose hostile reactions interrupt the school day. School administrators tell the transgender child that, in order to allow educational activities to continue, they must dress in more gender-neutral clothing, ideally cionsistent with the sex they were assigned at birth. The student's parents protest, arguing that their child's clothing is speech that expresses their gender identity. The school points to Tinker v. Des Moines, allowing suppression of student speech where it creates a material disruption, as well as recent legislation characterizing discussion of gender identity as lewd and obscene. …
The Nebulous Binaries Of C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces, Amantia Menalla
The Nebulous Binaries Of C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces, Amantia Menalla
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Much of C.S. Lewis’ novel Till We Have Faces can be examined through one of two binaries. The tension between rationality, or reason, and spirituality, or religion, is one of the core facets of both the text and its main character, Orual. Orual feels the pull of both ideas and thus spends most of the novel in a nebulous space between them. This tension is further complicated by the space between the feminine and the masculine which she also inhabits. By covering her face and body, Orual de-emphasizes her feminine identity and takes on a masculine role, dressing as a …
