Characterization Of Host Cell Specific Interactions During Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae Infection, Emerson Towey
Characterization Of Host Cell Specific Interactions During Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae Infection, Emerson Towey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vector-borne diseases have been increasing over the past few years due to changes in climate and disturbances in the vectors’ natural environment. To mitigate the risks of these diseases, it is necessary to understand pathogen biology and how it interacts with a host to cause disease. Here we focus our attention on the tick-borne pathogen, Rickettsia rickettsii. R. rickettsii is a member of the spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsiae and is the etiological agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a fatal human disease that is lacking an effective vaccine. Members of the bacterial genus Rickettsia are obligate intracellular endoparasites …

An Evaluation Of A Human-Operant Effort Manipulation And Effects Of Effort Disparity On Renewal, Haleh Amanieh
An Evaluation Of A Human-Operant Effort Manipulation And Effects Of Effort Disparity On Renewal, Haleh Amanieh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The relative effort of target and alternative responses during treatments using differential reinforcement of alternative behavior may impact the likelihood that a previously reduced target response will reemerge following a context change (i.e., “renewal”). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of an effort disparity between target and alternative responses in a human-operant arrangement. Eighteen college students clicked on one (Experiment 1) or two (Experiment 2) circles moving on a computer screen for points. In Experiment 1, the speed of the circle was manipulated as an index of effort such that three circle speeds (i.e., 50, 100, …
Risk Of Parasiticides To Dung-Associated Beetles In West Virginia, Haylie J. Brown
Risk Of Parasiticides To Dung-Associated Beetles In West Virginia, Haylie J. Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ecosystem services provided by dung-associated beetles, such as reducing pasture fouling, parasite suppression, supporting nutrient recycling, and increasing water infiltration, contribute to animal and pasture health. However, parasiticides used to manage cattle parasites, particularly flies and helminths, in West Virginia, can adversely affect these non-target beetles. We assessed the exposure and impact of some parasiticides used in WV including Clarifly® (active ingredient [a.i.] diflubenzuron), Cydectin® (a.i. moxidectin), LongRange® (a.i. eprinomectin), and Safe-guard® (a.i. fenbendazole). In Chapter 1, we review the use of parasiticides in the US and their non-target effects on beneficial dung-associated beetles. In Chapter …

Implementing A Nurse-Driven Clostridium Difficile Screening Protocol, Sandrela Magnuson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT
Background: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a prevalent infection often contracted in hospitals. CDI is also increasingly originating from community settings. In addition to the health risks associated with CDI, diagnosis of a hospital-acquired CDI can have a significant financial impact on hospital systems. When hospital acquired, hospital systems are no longer reimbursed by payers. Secondary to the increasing prevalence of community-acquired CDI, mechanisms for early detection and isolation are warranted.
Local Problem: J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital has an integrated Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) electronic health record (EHR) screening questionnaire that requires updating to align with current guidelines.

Role Of Β4b-Tubulin (Tubb4b) In The Sensory System And Spermatogenesis, Urikhan Sanzhaeva
Role Of Β4b-Tubulin (Tubb4b) In The Sensory System And Spermatogenesis, Urikhan Sanzhaeva
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Microtubules are ubiquitous cytoskeletal filaments essential in the function of eukaryotic cells. These polymers, comprised of αβ-tubulin heterodimers, are critical for cell division, intracellular transport, and formation of the axonemes of cilia and flagella. This functional diversity of microtubules is attributed to the incorporation of various α- and β-tubulin isotypes encoded by different genes. Indeed, mutations in human tubulin genes have been linked to various tissue-specific diseases, suggesting a unique function for each tubulin isotype. Mutations in the β4B-tubulin gene (TUBB4B) are associated with sensorineural hearing loss, Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a severe childhood blindness, and primary ciliary dyskinesia …

The Effects Of Feed Manufacture On Exogenous Enzymes, Starch Gelatinization, And Antinutritional Factors Associated With Soybeans, Kristina M. Bowen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This doctorate dissertation consists of four individual studies with the overarching theme of the effect of feed manufacture on exogenous enzymes and antinutrients found in soybeans.
Study 1. Including exogenous enzymes in poultry diets can liberate nutrients that are typically inaccessible to monogastric animals. Phytase feeding research has traditionally been conducted by rearing broilers in raised wire cages, whereas commercially grown broilers are reared on built-up litter. Therefore, cage-based studies may not accurately represent commercial bird performance response to phytase. Birds with access to litter consume it, possibly increasing phosphorus intake leading to suggestions that lower phytase concentrations are required. …
Astrocyte Reprogramming By Th17 Cells In Autoimmune Neuroinflammation: Mechanisms And Implications, Sarah Marie Milne
Astrocyte Reprogramming By Th17 Cells In Autoimmune Neuroinflammation: Mechanisms And Implications, Sarah Marie Milne
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a cell-mediated, demyelinating autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). T helper (Th) 17 cells mediate the pathogenesis of MS and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), in part by infiltrating the CNS and interacting with astrocytes, a resident glial cell. Astrocytes are central to coordinating several inflammatory processes in the CNS and can respond to cytokines and chemokines produced by encephalitogenic Th17 cells. Pathogenesis of MS and EAE requires the infiltration of immune cells from the periphery, including autoreactive T cells, B cells, monocytes, and neutrophils, that lead to neuroinflammation, demyelination, and …
Advanced Techniques In Time Series Forecasting: From Deterministic Models To Deep Learning, Xue Bai
Advanced Techniques In Time Series Forecasting: From Deterministic Models To Deep Learning, Xue Bai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation discusses three instances of temporal prediction, applied to population dynamics and deep learning.
In population modeling, dynamic processes are frequently represented by systems of differential equations, allowing for the analysis of various phenomena. The first application explores modeling cloned hematopoiesis in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) via a nonlinear system of differential equations. By tracking the evolution of different cell compartments, including cycling and quiescent stem cells, progenitor cells, differentiated cells, and terminally differentiated cells, the model captures the transition from normal hematopoiesis to the chronic and accelerated-acute phases of CML. Three distinct non-zero steady states are identified, representing …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lung cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed malignant neoplasm shared in men and women worldwide, second only to the sexually dimorphic prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Overall, lung cancer was responsible for 12.5% of new cancer cases globally in the year 2022. Of these cases, 80-85% are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a highly genotypically diverse sub-type of lung cancer. Over the past three decades, extraordinary improvement in screening, smoking cessation, early diagnosis and targeted therapy have been made, improving NSCLC survival markedly. However, as patients are surviving their primary disease better, there is a temporal …

Performance And Physiological Impacts Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid And Tryptophan Ratio Variations In Turkey Starter Diets Utilizing Concentrated Corn Proteins, Emily Blair Estanich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In Chapter 2, a study was designed to evaluate the effects of varying dietary branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) ratio in corn and soybean meal-based turkey starter diets. The BCAA leucine, isoleucine, and valine are considered indispensable amino acids needed for energy and stimulation of muscle protein synthesis via the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. Imbalanced BCAA ratios can lead to antagonism and degradation of limiting BCAA, particularly in diets with excess leucine. Concentrated corn proteins contain high levels of leucine and can alter BCAA requirements; however, crystalline BCAA may be added to correct these ratios. This study aimed to …
Cell-Type-Specific Effects Of Synaptic Zinc In Mouse Auditory Cortex, Mason Mccollum
Cell-Type-Specific Effects Of Synaptic Zinc In Mouse Auditory Cortex, Mason Mccollum
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Synaptic zinc signaling modulates synaptic activity and is present in specific populations of cortical neurons, suggesting that synaptic zinc contributes to the diversity of intracortical synaptic microcircuits and their auditory tuning properties. Stimulus-specific adaptation is a hallmark of sensory processing in which a repeated stimulus results in diminished successive neuronal responses, but a deviant stimulus will still elicit robust responses from the same neurons. Recent work has established that synaptically released zinc is an endogenous mechanism that shapes neuronal responses to sounds in the auditory cortex. Here, to understand the role of zinc signaling in the auditory cortex and the …

Background: Within the context of a growing sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) population in Australia, the problem of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use by SSA youth has been reported in recent studies. Although evidence from other sociocultural contexts indicate that SSA cultural values could be protective against youth AOD use, not much is known about what pertains in the Australian context. The core justification for conducting this study is grounded on the awareness that people may perceive and conceptualize their heritage cultural values based on the sociocultural context in which they find themselves (Akkuş et al., 2017).
Objectives: To explore SSA …

An Experiment To Determine Mineral-Associated Organic Matter Turnover In A Sandy Clay Loam, Samantha Abel
All Master's Theses
Soil is an important terrestrial carbon sink. Through regenerative land management, which includes minimizing soil disturbance, the carbon content of soil can be raised towards preindustrial levels. This feat requires effectively storing carbon in a natural system that is inclined to cyclicity. The most stable form of soil organic matter is mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM). This carbon labelling experiment was designed to identify short-term CO2 fluxes within the soil-plant-atmosphere system, particularly those related to MAOM turnover in the rhizosphere. Basil (Ocimum basilicum) was planted on a plot at the campus farm at Central Washington University. Another plot …

Factors Associated With The Prevalence Of Iron Deficiency And Anemia In Women Of Reproductive Age In The U.S.: Nhanes 2015-2020, Catherine Wise
All Master's Theses
Iron deficiency (ID) is well recognized as the most prevalent nutrient insufficiency and a leading cause of anemia. Women of reproductive age (WRA), females 15 to 49, are at an increased risk of ID and anemia. This is due to the heightened iron demands of this life stage, including puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy, which require iron intakes ranging from 15 to 27 mg/day. Poor health and nutrition increase the risk of ID and progression to anemia. Consequences of ID and anemia range from exhaustion and decreased cognitive function to an increased risk of mortality. This study aimed to assess the …

Gnss Radio Propagation Through Trapped Atmospheric Lee Waves In The San Bernardino Valley, Ca, Logan Grey
All Master's Theses
Atmospheric lee waves, also known as mountain waves, are a type of gravity wave that form as air that is forced over a mountain creates turbulence downstream. Trapped, or stationary, lee waves located directly over a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver on Earth’s surface appear to lead to anomalies in the receiver’s position estimate, usually skewed toward the neighboring mountain range. The exact mechanism by which trapped lee waves might cause these anomalies is not known, and so my research aims to understand this. GNSS station P612 located in the lee of the San Bernardino Mountains in southern California …

The neocortex is the largest region of mammalian brains and is responsible for the complex cognitive abilities and behaviors of mammals. The neocortex of mature mammals is divided into concise areas, which process sensory information from ears, eyes, and touch receptors, and regulate conscious movement of muscles. The combined graded expressions of several transcription factors over the embryonic neocortical ventricular zone regulates the sizes of these functional areas in the adult neocortex. Although progress has been made in understanding how transcription factors affect neocortical patterning, additional research is required to fully understand the underlying molecular mechanism(s), which will contribute to …

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive and endocrine disorder, being the leading cause of infertility for females of reproductive age. The etiology of PCOS is not fully known, although it is hypothesized that there is a genetic, epigenetic, and environmental component to the disease. One of the environmental influences that can cause an abnormal reproductive phenotype similar to PCOS is prenatal exposure to excess androgens (male sex hormones). Previous studies have shown that prenatal exposure to androgens in mice can cause a PCOS-like ovarian phenotype similar to people with PCOS. To examine how prenatal androgen exposure causes …
