Forced by family circumstances to abandon his samurai status, Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848) found his niche in life as a writer of popular fiction, eventually becoming the most prolific author of works in the yomihon genre, which consisted largely of historical romances. His dream of eventually restoring his family to its hereditary status is reflected in many of his works, beginning especially with Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki (Strange Tales of the Crescent Moon), a novel appearing serially in sixty-eight chapters between 1807 and 1811 whose hero, the historical Minamoto no Tametomo (1139-1170), is drawn from a variety of sources, both standard …

The death anxiety thesis is widely considered to be Ernest Becker’s primary contribution to social theory and is associated with his most widely read book, The Denial of Death (1973). This essay suggests Becker is understood in a more sophisticated and nuanced way when his death anxiety thesis is situated in the context of his earlier work in the humanities and social sciences. The death anxiety thesis itself is one component of a much broader theoretical conceptualization of expanded transference, a constant thread through all of Becker’s writings from his doctoral dissertation through his final posthumously published works. Furthermore, the …

The legal treatise remains a pillar of the American legal system and the rule of law, despite claims it might be dying and variations in quantitative citations to treatises over time. Indeed, several treatises evidence increased citation in U.S. Supreme Court opinions during the last several decades. Surprisingly, the U.S. Supreme Court, including the Robert’s Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, increasingly sees fit to rely on proto-treatises, such as Bracton, Coke, and Blackstone. This article provides empirical data and qualitative analysis to support this claim, highlighting the sometimes declining but nevertheless significant presence of treatises in …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aimLung cancer, a predominant contributor to cancer mortality, is characterized by diverse etiological factors, including tobacco smoking and genetic susceptibilities. Despite advancements, particularly in non-small cell carcinoma (NSCC), therapeutic options for squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) are limited. Transposable elements (TE) and their regulatory proteins, such as Transposable element derived (TIGD) family proteins, have been implicated in cancer development. TIGD1, upregulated in various cancers, including LUSC, lacks a defined function. This study aimed to elucidate the biological functions, associated pathways, and interacting proteins of TIGD1.Materials and methodsThe GSE229260 microarray dataset were investigated using GEO2R tool to identify the differentially expressed genes …

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract(CAKUT) are the leading causes of childhood chronic kidney disease (CKD). The etiology of most of the cases is thought to be multifactorial. In this study, risk factors for CAKUT and the effect of mobile phone-related electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure during pregnancy were investigated.Materials and methods: Fifty-seven cases and 57 healthy controls under 2 years of age were included and their mothers were subjected to a questionnaire. Groups were compared for parents’ demographics, pregestational (chronic disease, body mass index, use of the folic acid supplements) and antenatal variables (gestational disease, weight gain during …
Mechanistic Insights Into Direct Interactions That Mediate The Activity Of Dot1l Complex In Mll-Rearranged Leukemia, Ali Cihan
Student Theses and Dissertations
Acute leukemia can arise from the translocation-mediated fusion of the N terminus of the Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL) protein to various partner proteins. Although more than 60 different translocation-based fusion proteins have been identified, fusion partners such as AF9, AF10, and ENL constitute the majority of the MLL-rearranged leukemia cases; additionally, these fusion partners are also a part of the DOT1L (disruptor of telomeric silencing 1-like) complex. Aberrant histone H3 Lysine 79 (H3K79) methylation catalyzed by DOT1L was shown to be crucial for the maintenance of MLL-rearranged leukemia. DOT1L is the only known H3K79 methyltransferase, and further, a DOT1L inhibitor …
Connecting Female Mating Decisions And Male Courtship Strategies In Drosophila, Rufei Li
Connecting Female Mating Decisions And Male Courtship Strategies In Drosophila, Rufei Li
Student Theses and Dissertations
In many species, males have evolved elaborate behavioral patterns to attract females or repel rival males. The neural mechanisms mediating these male behavioral traits and how females use them to guide their mating decisions remain elusive. In this thesis,I present our efforts to uncover the neural logic underlying mate selection in Drosophila melanogaster. Unlike males who display overt courtship behaviors in pursuit of a female mate, including chasing her and singing a courtship song to her, female behaviors during courtship are subtle, making it challenging to infer how a female's sexual receptivity fluctuates based on the male's performance. To gain insight …
Rna Therapeutics For Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Christoph Neumayer
Rna Therapeutics For Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Christoph Neumayer
Student Theses and Dissertations
Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FLC) is a rare liver cancer characterized by a recurrent fusion of the heat shock protein DNAJB1 and the catalytic subunit of protein kinase A (PRKACA). Due to limited efficacy of conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation my work explored new therapeutic options. As DNAJB1::PRKACA is known to initiate tumorigenesis, I reasoned that it would be an ideal target for a therapeutic. However, it was not known if FLC tumors are still dependent on DNAJB1::PRKACA or if cells achieved independence of the initial oncogene. To test if FLC is dependent on the oncokinase I screened short …

ODU Articles
We present the Urban Nature Indexes (UNI), a comprehensive tool that measures urban ecological performance under one standard framework linked to global commitments. The UNI was developed by interdisciplinary experts and evaluated by practitioners from diverse cities to capture each city’s ecological footprint from local to global scale. The UNI comprises six themes (consumption drivers, human pressures, habitat status, species status, nature’s contributions to people, and governance responses) that encompass measurable impacts on climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem services, pollution, consumption, water management, and equity within one comprehensive system. Cities then adapt the UNI to their context and capacity by …
A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
Theses and Dissertations
Extensive research in paleopathology has documented adverse effects accompanying a shift in subsistence strategy from largely nomadic, hunting and gathering lifestyles to those of more sedentary, agrarian systems. Comparative assessment of the human skeletal remains of early foragers and later farmers recovered from archaeological sites around the world have consistently demonstrated a decrease in average age at death in the latter.
Across the pre-Columbian North American Midwest, the transitional period between the Late Woodland and Mississippian periods, sometimes referred to as the terminal or Mississippian Acculturated Late Woodland, portended establishment of semi-permanent to permanent hamlets, increasingly reliant upon the adoption …

Photocatalytic Efficiency Of Graphene Quantum Dots Incorporated With Tio2 Under Visible Light For Degradation Of Organic Dye, Ilada Sanprasert
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The rapid industrialization and increased use of organic dyes for production in many industries have led to extensive environmental pollution concerns. At present, photocatalytic dye degradation is an outstanding environmentally friendly process for removal and treatment of organic dyes from water pollutants that cause no harm to the environment. In this research, we investigated the performance of different crystallographic structure of TiO2 (anatase, rutile, and mixed anatase/rutile P25 TiO2) under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the TiO2 was modified using graphene quantum dots to evaluate their effect on photocatalytic efficiency. The characterization results of the GQDs/TiO2 photocatalyst composites demonstrated that GQDs …

Financing Climate Change Through A Racial Capitalism Lens, James T. Gathii
Financing Climate Change Through A Racial Capitalism Lens, James T. Gathii
Faculty Publications & Other Works
In this Essay, I argue that the climate crisis has provided the global finance industry an opportunity to make exorbitant profits from majority Black and Brown countries in the Global South. I show how the global finance industry is leveraging its muscle over climate-vulnerable and heavily indebted countries in the Global South through complex financial transactions. These transactions commodify nature and the biodiversity resources of these Global South countries. In return, these Global South countries borrow capital to address the climate crisis and to pay off their debts. This borrowing that invariably comes at high interest rates, especially through bond …
Insulin As A Mediator Of Obesity-Related Cognitive Decline, Stephanie Gloria Dilucia
Insulin As A Mediator Of Obesity-Related Cognitive Decline, Stephanie Gloria Dilucia
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Obesity afflicts nearly half of the adult population in the United States and is strongly associated with age-related dementia. Hyperinsulinemia-induced insulin resistance is a common comorbidity amongst obese individuals and is linked to both poor cerebral perfusion and brain insulin deficiency. Insulin plays vital roles in the regulation of blood flow and various cognitive processes, including memory. As such, poor insulin action within and transport across the cerebrovasculature may predispose obese individuals to cognitive impairment.
