Enhancing Grade 3 Learners' Creative Writing Through Makerspace Pedagogy, Mary Sada Chanzera, Wachira Nicholas

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

This research project explored the integration of MakerSpace interventions to enhance creative writing skills in Grade 3 learners. It addressed the challenges students face in expressing thoughts through writing, and aimed to unlock linguistic potential and stimulate imagination with interactive tools and collaborative spaces. Traditional teaching methods in Kenya often fail to foster a love for writing or produce proficient writers. Factors such as limited exposure to diverse materials and difficulty understanding English structures contribute to low motivation and poor performance. The study highlighted the need for engaging and effective teaching approaches. MakerSpace interventions offer hands-on, experiential learning that encouraged …

Assembly And Analysis Of Space Biofilm-Forming Bacterial Model Organisms Towards The Treatment Of Water System Biofilms, Yo-Ann VéLez Justiniano Jan 2024

Assembly And Analysis Of Space Biofilm-Forming Bacterial Model Organisms Towards The Treatment Of Water System Biofilms, Yo-Ann VéLez Justiniano

Dissertations

Space exploration imposes unique challenges on the human body and engineered systems alike. One such challenge is the control of microbial life, specifically biofilms, within the water processor assembly of the International Space Station (ISS). This investigation aimed to determine the feasibility of using an innovative bioremediation approach to mitigate biofilm growth in the water processor assembly. This approach entails the dissemination of a desired anti-biofilm gene across the microbial population of the water processor assembly through horizontal gene transfer via conjugation. To ascertain the viability of this method, the research was divided into two primary focuses. The first part …

The Capacity Of An Unfaltering Duress: America's Lost Love Stories, Seth Shimmelfarb-Wells Jan 2024

The Capacity Of An Unfaltering Duress: America's Lost Love Stories, Seth Shimmelfarb-Wells

English Honors Papers

This thesis interrogates the imbrication between negative subjectivity and the fiction writing of Gayl Jones. In doing so, this work reimagines conceptions of intimate and interpersonal love, community, and retributive violence in the face of conditional (anti)Blackness. Through an engagement with contemporary scholars of Black Studies and with the help of the abundant archive of Black music, this project aims to prioritize, reproduce, and heed to Black Artistic registers of feeling that embrace duress, destruction, and madness. Through her literary performance, Jones reproduces and fabulates moments of Black social life that expand and simultaneously shatter our conception of a given …

The Misleading Successes Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In Environmental Policy, David E. Adelman, Amy Sinden Jan 2024

The Misleading Successes Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In Environmental Policy, David E. Adelman, Amy Sinden

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

This Article critically examines the rise of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in environmental policy and the profound disconnect that has persisted between the actual practice of CBA and its normative grounding. Although CBA is now synonymous with rational decision-making in federal agencies, this has not always been the case. Views about CBA have evolved from bipartisan rejection in the 1970s, to partisan division (Republicans for, Democrats against) during the Reagan-Bush years, to a broad embrace of CBA in the mid-1990s, when centrist legal scholars were instrumental in crafting a new defense of CBA based on a mix of welfare economics and …

Independence Through Judicialization: The Politics Surrounding Administrative Adjudicators, 1929-1949, Lawrence J. Liu Jan 2024

Independence Through Judicialization: The Politics Surrounding Administrative Adjudicators, 1929-1949, Lawrence J. Liu

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

One front in today’s battle to define the scope of the administrative state concerns the authority, status, and future of its 10,000-plus administrative adjudicators. Decisions by federal courts and the executive branch to increase the dependence of administrative adjudicators on the executive have sparked strong reactions from observers, with many advocating for measures to increase adjudicator “independence.” But who should administrative adjudicators be independent of, which ought to be independent, and why?

Calls for administrative adjudicator independence are not new. This Article draws on primary documents produced by private actors, congressional decisionmakers, and federal executive agents to present a political …

The Clean Water Act’S Nurdle-Shaped Gap: Using The Cwa To Address Primary Microplastic Pollution, Taylor Hopkins Jan 2024

The Clean Water Act’S Nurdle-Shaped Gap: Using The Cwa To Address Primary Microplastic Pollution, Taylor Hopkins

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

The term “nurdles” may sound like a silly made-up word lifted from the pages of a children’s book, but unfortunately nurdles are all-too real, with trillions of these microplastics ending up in our oceans each year. Nurdles spill into the environment at every step along their supply chain, allowing them to end up in fish and on our plates. Despite the known danger nurdles pose to both wildlife and humans, they are virtually unregulated. In the absence of regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), some states and their citizens have begun trying to wrangle rogue nurdles, and hold nurdle …

Improving The Affirmative Disclosure Of Agency Legal Materials, Bernard W. Bell, Cary Coglianese, Michael Herz, Margaret B. Kwoka, Orly Lobel Jan 2024

Improving The Affirmative Disclosure Of Agency Legal Materials, Bernard W. Bell, Cary Coglianese, Michael Herz, Margaret B. Kwoka, Orly Lobel

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

It is axiomatic that in a democratic society the law must be broadly accessible. Administrative agencies produce a plethora of materials imposing legal obligations on commercial or individual actors in the private sector. Other materials bind the agencies themselves in ways that affect the rights or interests of private parties. Still other materials provide the public with information about how agencies interpret and apply the statutes and rules they administer, or how agencies seek to deploy their discretion or take other actions that can affect private individuals or organizations. This Article focuses on improving the public availability of all of …

The Kitchen In The Church Complex: Work And Sacred Space At ‘Ain El-Gedida, Dana Robinson Jan 2024

The Kitchen In The Church Complex: Work And Sacred Space At ‘Ain El-Gedida, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

The fourth-century church complex at ‘Ain el-Gedida, in the Dakhleh Oasis, provides a striking case study for the integration of kitchen work into social and religious space in late antiquity. Its unique features – both sociological and archaeological – reflect a dynamic, rough-and-tumble integration that both protects the sacred space of the nave and centres the productive labour of cooking. This article analyses the anteroom/kitchen B6 from the perspectives of space syntax, the communicative landscape of labour, and the sociology of graffiti. While it may have been designed as a transitional zone or service auxiliary for the primary public spaces …

Serine Proteinase Inhibitors From Nicotiana Benthamiana, A Nonpreferred Host Plant, Inhibit The Growth Of Myzus Persicae (Green Peach Aphid), Honglin Feng, Georg Jander

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) is a severe agricultural crop pest that has developed resistance to most current control methods, requiring the urgent development of novel strategies. Plant proteinase inhibitors (PINs) are small proteins that protect plants against pathogens and/or herbivores, likely by preventing efficient protein digestion. RESULTS: We identified 67 protease genes in the transcriptomes of three M. persicae lineages (USDA-Red, G002 and G006). Comparison of gene expression levels in aphid guts and whole aphids showed that several proteases, including a highly expressed serine protease, are significantly overexpressed in the guts. Furthermore, we identified three genes encoding …

Occasional Papers of the Museum of Natural Science, Louisiana State University

Hypoxia and cold temperatures create unique physiological challenges for high-altitude organisms that can vary depending on lifestyle. While nearly all studies of air-breathing animals at high altitude are from terrestrial species, species that breath-hold dive underwater at high altitude encounter a very different set of selective pressures influencing their phenotype. The goal of this publication is to highlight the changes in O2 transport and utilization in high-altitude diving birds relative to divers at sea level, and the extent to which these changes are qualitatively distinct from phenotypic changes in non-diving species at high altitude. For example, while high capacities for …

Another Look: Animal Histories Of The Civil War Era, Henry Motty

Civil War Book Review

The chaos and suffering that swept through the United States during the Civil War affected not only humans—but also the animal world. In Animal Histories of the Civil War, a team of Civil War scholars argue how animal contributions, such as providing mobility, food, and companionship, not only impacted the way the war was fought, but also determined its outcome and the way it was remembered. Edited by Earl J. Hess, author of Civil War Logistics: A Study of Military Transportation and the former Stewart W. McClelland Chair in History at Lincoln Memorial University, Animal Histories highlights the relationship and …

Environmental History In Focus, Kennon H. Keiser Jr. Jan 2024

Environmental History In Focus, Kennon H. Keiser Jr.

Civil War Book Review

The book reviews in this winter 2024 issue of the Civil War Book Review emphasize the role of the environment during the Civil War Era. While our two feature essays take us out of the realm of environmental history and into the world of politics, the primary focus of this winter issue is the role of nature in history. In recent years, historians have added to our knowledge of the environment’s role in the past. Nowhere is this more clear than in the Civil War Era. As historian Stephen Berry explained, “Like the Columbian Exchange, the Civil War was a …

Scars On The Land: An Environmental History Of Slavery In The American South, Rich Newman Jan 2024

Civil War Book Review

In Scars on the Land, David Silkenat offers an authoritative and expansive treatment of slavery’s environmental impact on the American south. Based on a wide range of sources – from slave narratives to slaveholders’ reports on nature – and a deep reading of recent scholarship on early environmental reform, the rise of capitalism, and Black resistance to bondage, the book expertly examines the ecological transformation of southern landscapes between the colonial era and the Civil War.

The Key To The Shenandoah Valley: Geography And The Civil War Struggle For Winchester, Johnathan M. Ward Jan 2024

The Key To The Shenandoah Valley: Geography And The Civil War Struggle For Winchester, Johnathan M. Ward

Civil War Book Review

The Key to the Shenandoah Valley offers a substantial military study of the topographical and environmental features surrounding the town of Winchester, Virginia during the Civil War. Edward McCaul focuses on six specific battles for control over the town of Winchester, but he examines these military struggles in a much larger context to indicate how the geography of the Valley was crucial to Civil War strategy. In so doing, he effectively combines environmental history, military history, and political history to reveal the importance of Winchester and its terrain.

Empire Of Brutality: Enslaved People And Animals In The British Atlantic World, Owen Clow Jan 2024

Empire Of Brutality: Enslaved People And Animals In The British Atlantic World, Owen Clow

Civil War Book Review

Empire of Brutality: Enslaved People and Animals in the British Atlantic World, Christopher Michael Blakley’s first book and a revision of their 2019 dissertation, traces how British slaveowners distinguished between people, animals, and those persons who, through enslavement, occupied a position “in-between,” and how that process of dehumanization was molded by the material human-animal relationships that structured Atlantic slavery.

Women, Animals, Food: Planetary Perspectives On The Non-(Hu)Man, Samu/Elle Striewski Jan 2024

Women, Animals, Food: Planetary Perspectives On The Non-(Hu)Man, Samu/Elle Striewski

Comparative Woman

The paper comparatively reads Mahasweta Devi’s Pterodactyl, Pirtha, and Puran Sahay (1995) and Margaret Atwood’s The Year of the Flood (2009) to trace the ways in which both novels show the complex intertwinement of the climate crisis with gender, class, race, subalternity, anthropocentrism, and veganism. Bringing together Gayatri C. Spivak’s notion of “planetarity” with ecofeminist philosophy and literary criticism, the article proposes a planetary ecogender reading of the two texts and their representation of the non-man, non-human, and non-subject. Building up further on Jacques Derrida’s critique of carno-phallogocentrism, the pedagogy of a relational ethics of “nurturing” is hence presented …

Impact Of Solar Radiation On Perchlorate Formation In The Atmosphere: Evidence From Ice Core Measurements, Bishnu Kunwar Jan 2024

Impact Of Solar Radiation On Perchlorate Formation In The Atmosphere: Evidence From Ice Core Measurements, Bishnu Kunwar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Perchlorate, which derives from both anthropogenic and natural sources in the current environment, poses a substantial health hazard to humans as it competes with iodine uptake in the thyroid gland. Consequently, there has been considerable concern about minimizing human exposure to environmental perchlorate by restricting its release from man-made sources. However, the absence of a clear understanding regarding the respective contributions of man-made and natural sources has hindered widespread regulation efforts. A 300-year (1700–2007) Summit, Greenland ice core record from a previous study showed relatively stable perchlorate concentrations in Greenland snow prior to 1980, with some elevated perchlorate levels associated …

Peas are a good source of nutrients for both humans and animals, and they are the world's second most significant and sustainable legume. There have been studies on different kinds of pea grown in other parts of the world, but there is no information on the compositional and functional characteristics of pea varieties grown specifically in South Dakota. The objective of the study was to evaluate the proximate composition and functional properties of various pea varieties and determine if the pea variety impacted cookie properties. The proximate composition (moisture, protein, starch, and amylose), functional capacities (water holding, oil holding capacity, …

Species Distribution Modeling Of Aquilegia Brevistyla (Ranunculaceae): A Critically Imperiled Black Hills Disjunct Species, Eric Daniel Puetz Jan 2024

Species Distribution Modeling Of Aquilegia Brevistyla (Ranunculaceae): A Critically Imperiled Black Hills Disjunct Species, Eric Daniel Puetz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unchecked human activity is contributing to rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions, changes in land use, altered disturbance/fire regimes, spread of invasive species, and loss of biological diversity and related breakdown of ecosystem services. Additionally, climatic shifts may lead to phenological mismatches between species and their environments if these changes outpace a species’ ability to adapt or migrate to a more suitable habitat. Isolated mountain populations are particularly threatened by unpredictable climatic conditions, as they may have limited migration corridors and often lower levels of genetic diversity to move or adapt, respectively. As these negative feedbacks compound on the landscape, …

Mechanical Testing Of Novel Biopolymers For The Replacement Of Petroleum-Based Plastic Hay Bale Net Wrapping, Logan Wolf Jan 2024

Mechanical Testing Of Novel Biopolymers For The Replacement Of Petroleum-Based Plastic Hay Bale Net Wrapping, Logan Wolf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to test biopolymers synthesized from oilseeds or produced from agricultural wastes for large bale net wrapping as a viable alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics (PBP). The goal is to test and assess novel polymers to guide the synthesis of a benign biodegradable polymer. Biobased net wrapping will significantly reduce ingestion of PBPs in animals such as ruminants to improve digestive health and minimize cattle loss due to plastic disease. Biobased plastics will also achieve partial or complete breakdown shortly after service without depositing microplastics in the environment. This will reduce the risk of damage …

Climate Change Adaptation For Embankment Through Biogeotechnics, Debayan Ghosh Jan 2024

Climate Change Adaptation For Embankment Through Biogeotechnics, Debayan Ghosh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Problematic soil like expansive soil, and frost-susceptible soil causes significant damage to civil infrastructure. The use of calcium-based stabilizers in the treatment of sulfate-rich expansive soils is not suggested due to the formation of ettringite. Infrastructure such as pavements and embankments built on expansive soil are often exposed to the damaging impacts of freeze-thaw cycles in areas prone to seasonal freezing making them vulnerable to cracking and spalling. In this study, a native expansive soil from South Dakota with a sulfate content of more than 10,000 ppm was stabilized using biopolymer and cement. The experimental study investigated the strength and …

Plant Pathways Associated With Competition For Soybean Root Colonization By Bradyrhizobium Strains, Athira Sethu Madhavan Jan 2024

Plant Pathways Associated With Competition For Soybean Root Colonization By Bradyrhizobium Strains, Athira Sethu Madhavan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen is a crucial nutrient for the growth and development of plants. Legume crops like soybeans develop symbiotic associations with soil bacteria from the genus, Bradyrhizobium to obtain fixed nitrogen. In this mutualistic association, rhizobia are released into root nodules that provide a compatible environment for rhizobia to grow and fix nitrogen (Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation (SNF)). A caveat in such beneficial associations is the competition between different rhizobium strains in soil for infection and nodule occupancy. The elite inoculant strains encounter competition by indigenous rhizobial population in the soil to infect and nodulate a susceptible legume host, because of which …

Movement Ecology Of Paddlefish And Walleye Reveal The Importance Of Continued Interjurisdictional Management In Riverine And Lacustrine Systems, Kaitlyn Bearden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fisheries systems function at broad spatial and temporal scales. Fishes within these systems are often highly mobile and move to locate adequate habitat, to feed and reproduce. As individuals navigate their environment, they potentially cross regulatory boundaries (state or federal) and or encounter physical barriers such as dams. Regulatory boundaries may not physically impede fish movement, but they are visible to fisheries managers thus the fishes within them may be vulnerable to varying management and harvest regulations. Physical boundaries (e.g., dams) are also particularly problematic for highly mobile species in large river systems. In chapter two, I documented that apparent …
