The Post-Ongwen Case Period And The Reconciliation Process In Northern Uganda: Local Communities As A Site Of Knowledge, Christelle Molima Bameka
Scholarly Articles
By providing victims with more space in the Ongwen case, the International Criminal Court (icc) has significantly contributed to the healing of the trauma and community reconciliation in northern Uganda. That said, this court has also raised issues that could affect local efforts to achieve peace, namely the positioning of victims of child soldiers vis-à-vis criminal child soldiers. Drawing on qualitative data collected through focus group discussions with some community members from locations under investigation by the icc, this sociolegal study examines the victims’ narratives about child soldiers and the different ideas of human rights that emerge. Then, it explores …

Modulation Of Diet-Induced Gut Inflammation In Slowing Initiation Of Hematologic Malignancies, Esther Nyarkoa Mensah
Modulation Of Diet-Induced Gut Inflammation In Slowing Initiation Of Hematologic Malignancies, Esther Nyarkoa Mensah
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The intestinal tract serves as a host to an extremely complex microbial system. Microbes in the gut regulate their metabolism in response to chemicals generated by other microorganisms as well as nutrition supply from dietary intake. Alterations in gut bacteria have been implicated in the development of metabolic disorders such as obesity and the progression of diseases such as Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Although the cause of obesity is multifactorial, the consumption of high-fat or sugar-rich diets (Western diets) has been proposed as a significant contributor to this global epidemic. Obesity is a major public health concern that has been extensively …
Democracy And The Unconscious, Ali Aslam, David Mcivor, Joel Alden Schlosser
Democracy And The Unconscious, Ali Aslam, David Mcivor, Joel Alden Schlosser
Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
This essay examines the relationship between democracy and the unconscious. It does so by understanding democracy through the repressed desire for shared power by a collective actor that has episodically realized itself, in ways that haunt political languages, practices, and aspirations. Democratic flourishing rests upon erotic practices through which the demos transgressively transforms politics by embracing what we refer to as democratic narcissism. Democratic decline and impasse are symptomatic of repressed desires for power that have required the people’s abjection rather than coalescing into a self-affirming narcissism of the demos.

Tools And Strategies For Successful Classroom Education, Madalyn Peterson
Tools And Strategies For Successful Classroom Education, Madalyn Peterson
Integrated Studies
The purpose of this paper will be to discuss resources and tools that can be used in the classroom. These tools will involve successfully establishing classroom management. Classroom management is as simple as creating a routine for the students in the classroom, which will also guide the students through the classroom expectations. Setting expectations is crucial and will assist students by helping them gain an understanding of what is expected of them while in the classroom, and while they are working. This also establishes what kind of role model the teacher plans to be in the classroom. When a teacher …

National Pork Producers Council V. Ross: Reining In The Dormant Commerce Clause, Pushing The Limits Of State Sovereignty, Jessica Kowalski
National Pork Producers Council V. Ross: Reining In The Dormant Commerce Clause, Pushing The Limits Of State Sovereignty, Jessica Kowalski
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
The dormant Commerce Clause is one of the oldest constitutional doctrines in the United States and is essential in maintaining equal sovereignty among the states. While the doctrine has been substantially refined since it was first recognized, it had gone largely unchanged in recent years, until a controversial California law required further clarification of its scope.
In National Pork Producers Council v. Ross, the Supreme Court considered whether a California law prohibiting the in-state sale of pork produced in cruel conditions was constitutional under the dormant Commerce Clause. The Court ultimately upheld the California law, holding that a regulation …

Law Versus Justice In International Atrocity Prosecutions, Mark A. Drumbl
Law Versus Justice In International Atrocity Prosecutions, Mark A. Drumbl
Scholarly Articles
Attribution of individual criminal responsibility in the context of extraordinary international crimes that, pace Hannah Arendt (1963), explode the limits of law and bust the global trust, indeed, remains fraught and taut. Hence, attention to legally cognizable linkages between the free will of the accused person and the connived malignant context matters greatly. These linkages adopt various monikers, including nexus and modes of liability. Insofar as international criminal trials self-identify as imposing international criminal law—as opposed to show trials that heave theatrics upon a stage—some respect toward due process is required in order to maintain credibility. While international criminal law …

Adverse health effects associated with exposures to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a concern for public health and are driven by their elimination half-lives and accumulation in specific tissues. However, data on PFAS binding in human tissues are limited. Accumulation of PFAS in human tissues has been linked to interactions with specific proteins and lipids in target organs. Additional data on PFAS binding and unbound fractions (funbound) in whole human tissues are urgently needed. Here, we address this gap by using rapid equilibrium dialysis to measure the binding and funbound of 16 PFAS with 3 …

Red Dyes From West To East In Medieval Europe: From Portuguese Manuscript Illuminations To Romanian Textiles, Irina Petroviciu, Paula Nabais, Maria J. Melo
Textile Crossroads: Exploring European Clothing, Identity, and Culture across Millennia
Red is the color par excellence, its symbolism being linked with protection and magic through its primary attributes, fire and blood. It was the predominant color from the earliest times, certainly during the Greek and Roman periods and into Medieval Europe, until blue became a competitor around the 13th century. Mineral pigments, like iron oxides, were the first red sources, used to draw lines, dots, or spots on cave walls or stones. Later, other mineral red pigments were also exploited: Cinnabar, natural mercury sulfide, since the Neolithic, and realgar, arsenic trisulfide, in Ancient Egypt. Scientific investigation revealed that, although …
Clothing In Transition: Social, Symbolic, And Legal Aspects Of Garments From Prehistory To The Early Byzantine Period, Tina Boloti, Francesca Scotti, Cristina Cumbo, Petra Linscheid
Clothing In Transition: Social, Symbolic, And Legal Aspects Of Garments From Prehistory To The Early Byzantine Period, Tina Boloti, Francesca Scotti, Cristina Cumbo, Petra Linscheid
Textile Crossroads: Exploring European Clothing, Identity, and Culture across Millennia
Since ancient times, garments served a wide range of purposes: Either functional, providing protection by covering the body, or symbolic, as an element of non-verbal communication and marker of identity. In particular, this stimulates the development of specific characteristics in shape, decoration, or material composition, which generate distinctions among garments, as acknowledged by Roman jurists too.
These distinctions are determined by various factors. One important factor is the social meaning of clothing: There are garments for public life, garments expressing rank, garments suited for special professions, or garments intended for sacred/priestly rites reflecting particular religious symbols. And, of course, clothes …

Comparison Of Energy Budget Of Cockroach Nymph (Hemimetabolous) And Hornworm (Holometabolous) Under Food Restriction, Charles J. Green, Chen Hou
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Animals with different life histories budget their intake energy differently when food availability is low. It has been shown previously that hornworm (larva of Manduca sexta), a holometabolous insect species with a short development stage, prioritizes growth at the price of metabolism under food restriction, but it is unclear how hemimetabolous insect species with a relatively long development period budget their intake energy under food scarcity. Here, we use orange head cockroaches (Eublaberus posticus) to investigate this question. We found that for both species under food restriction, rates of metabolism and growth were suppressed, but the degree of reduction was …

Secondary Ela Teachers’ Perceptions Of Classroom Dynamics In A Technology-Rich Learning Environment, Graham Otton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this narrative study was to explore secondary ELA teachers’ perceptions of teaching and learning in a technology-rich educational environment. This study was conducted in a central high school district in New York state across four school buildings. Though the central high school district provides uniform guidance and material for the instructional programs in all high school buildings, the execution of instruction and teacher development happens daily in the buildings themselves. Though one district, each building serves distinct communities with pronounced school cultures stemming from varying student and faculty demographics, as well as building leadership. The researcher explored …
A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Psychosocial Interventions For Early Childhood Problems, Ages 0-5, Hara Stephanou
A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Psychosocial Interventions For Early Childhood Problems, Ages 0-5, Hara Stephanou
Theses and Dissertations
Early childhood consists of important developmental milestones, including the acquisition of daily living skills, including toileting, feeding, and sleep. While previous reviews have focused on interventions for some childhood problems, no single study has broadly assessed interventions across common presenting problems in children ages 0-5. This study systematically reviewed 41 studies on interventions for externalizing (23 studies), internalizing (3), sleep (11), feeding (3), and toileting (1) using meta-analytic methods where applicable. Overall, externalizing interventions were effective (TX1 Hedges' g = -.60; TX2 g = -.51) and largely homogeneous. Individual interventions reduced externalizing behaviors more than group or self-guided interventions (TX1 …
A Longitudinal Examination Of The Relations Between Racial Discrimination And Executive Function, Aldona Chorzepa
A Longitudinal Examination Of The Relations Between Racial Discrimination And Executive Function, Aldona Chorzepa
Theses and Dissertations
Discrimination has been linked to changes in executive function. This relationship may explain links between discrimination and adverse health and mental health outcomes, including depression, substance use, and health behavior. To date, the research examining this question has been limited, as the majority of studies reviewed employed experimental manipulations for discrimination exposure and tested acute same-day effects in the lab. Clarifying the extent to which exposure to discrimination impacts executive function over time in young adults is crucial to identifying opportunities for intervention. The current study evaluates the relations of both recent and lifetime exposure to racial discrimination to three …

Checklist And Key To The Millipede Species Of Georgia, United States, With Notes On Distribution, Lance Andrew, Bruce Snyder
Checklist And Key To The Millipede Species Of Georgia, United States, With Notes On Distribution, Lance Andrew, Bruce Snyder
Graduate Research Showcase
Millipedes are an exceptionally diverse class of animals that have an impact on soil structure and nutrient cycling. Despite their abundance, importance, and wide distribution, they are understudied compared to other animal taxa, and biogeographical information is scant. Georgia, though the largest state by land area east of the Mississippi River, has largely been overlooked by regional millipede checklists. Without baseline species distributions and abundances to inform wildlife management decisions, sufficient measures cannot be taken to preserve millipede biodiversity, especially in light of recent changes in climate and land use. Taxonomic resources for millipede identification in North America are also …
Do Nest Box Temperatures Affect Nest Success And Nestlings Growth For Eastern Bluebirds?, Mathew Gordon, Katie Stumpf
Do Nest Box Temperatures Affect Nest Success And Nestlings Growth For Eastern Bluebirds?, Mathew Gordon, Katie Stumpf
Graduate Research Showcase
Rising global temperatures due to climate change have caused declines in many species. For birds, temperature is a primary factor in nest site selection and nest success, so successful management will require temperature mitigation techniques. Secondary cavity nesting birds such as the Eastern Bluebird are particularly vulnerable as common occupants of nest boxes, which are often warmer inside than the outside ambient temperature. Temperatures exceeding 42°C can have numerous negative consequences for Bluebirds, including reducing hatching success and nestling growth. We monitored 50 Eastern Bluebird nest boxes (25 are painted white and 25 are unpainted) at Panola Mountain State Park …
Revisiting The Energetics Hypothesis: Can Accelerometer Monitoring Reveal Hidden Variation In The Movement Patterns Of Snakes?, William L. Tillett Ii, Dominic L. Desantis
Revisiting The Energetics Hypothesis: Can Accelerometer Monitoring Reveal Hidden Variation In The Movement Patterns Of Snakes?, William L. Tillett Ii, Dominic L. Desantis
Graduate Research Showcase
Historically, predators have been classified into two categories based upon how they search for and acquire prey. Active foragers move through the environment in search of prey, while ambush foragers “sit-and-wait” in selected positions for prey to pass. This difference in energetic demands is expected to correlate with disparities in the time species allocate to various behaviors. According to this energetics hypothesis, ambush foragers should exhibit reduced movement and space use relative to co-occurring active foragers. Snakes represent traditionally overlooked model organisms for exploring these associations, particularly the interplay between movement, foraging mode, and thermal preferences. Radio telemetry is the …
Examining The Relationship Between Right To Work Legislation, State Economies, And Unions., Andrew Smith
Examining The Relationship Between Right To Work Legislation, State Economies, And Unions., Andrew Smith
Graduate Research Showcase
The aftermath of the 2008 economic crash prompted state leaders to explore various tools for economic recovery. In this context, a policy commonly referred to as "Right-to-Work" (RTW) gained prominence as a potential solution. The implementation of RTW sparked notable and impassioned protests, marking a significant chapter in the affected states' history. The genesis of RTW traces back to organized labor's authority to mandate membership dues as a condition of employment, leading to the establishment of the "closed shop." To address perceived union overreach, the adoption of the Taft-Hartley Amendments empowered states to enact RTW laws, prohibiting closed shops.
