Naloxone And Dexmedetomidine Reversal Of The Effects Of Methamphetamine And Fentanyl Co-Administration, Wesley R. Tackett Jan 2024

Naloxone And Dexmedetomidine Reversal Of The Effects Of Methamphetamine And Fentanyl Co-Administration, Wesley R. Tackett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Agitation is common amongst individuals who have taken methamphetamine (METH) when they arrive at the emergency room (ER). Fentanyl (FENT) and other opioids can mask this agitation which could then unexpectedly present after the reversal of these drugs by naloxone (NLX). Commonly used medications for agitation caused by METH include benzodiazepine sedatives (like alprazolam and similar drugs), but these drugs can produce dangerous sedation and inhibition of breathing when combined with opioids such as FENT. Therefore, the purpose of this MS thesis project was to use a rat model of METH-FENT overdose to test the ability of opioid antagonist NLX …

When Originalism Failed: Lessons From Tort Law, Donald G. Gifford, Richard C. Boldt, Christopher J. Robinette

Faculty Scholarship

Two recent Supreme Court decisions upended American life. Opinions released on consecutive days in June 2022 overturned the right of reproductive choice nationwide and invalidated a statute regulating the carrying of concealed weapons in New York. The opinions were united by a common methodology. Pursuant to what one scholar terms “thick” originalism, history, as told by the majority, dictated the resolution of constitutional disputes.

This Article explores the use of thick originalism in several celebrated torts cases that raised constitutional issues. These cases illustrate two significant kinds of problems associated with a rigid historical approach to constitutional interpretation. The first …

Prediction Of Radiation Exposure From Genetic Expression And Treatment Of Resulting Cancers, Adam Vanasse Jan 2024

Prediction Of Radiation Exposure From Genetic Expression And Treatment Of Resulting Cancers, Adam Vanasse

Open Access Dissertations

In the absence of a physical device to measure radiation exposure, the general population has little to no efficient way of precisely measuring dose received long after the initial exposure. Even after this exposure, ionizing radiation greatly increases the likelihood of developing cancers and other health problems. This research focuses on three main experiments related to both tracking radiation exposure and treating the cancers that may arise from it.

The first of these experiments is an analysis of human blood samples irradiated at two different nuclear research facilities looking into the development of a biological dosimetry method. Using RNA sequencing, …

The Bias Presumption, Bradley A. Areheart, Dave Hall Jan 2024

The Bias Presumption, Bradley A. Areheart, Dave Hall

Scholarly Works

The American workplace is a fractured sphere of public life, in which white men often wield power at the expense of women and people of color. However, that power imbalance is no longer fully imbued with the active animus that characterized the first few centuries of American life; now, much of the damage done by discrimination is done structurally and implicitly. Consequently, the operation of bias and disadvantage is often invisible to employers and employees alike. The problem of discrimination in American life is thus larger and deeper than a few bad actors, and it will be impossible to solve …

The Healing Power Of Active Imagination On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms And Wellbeing: A Mixed-Method Exploratory Study, Joshua Rutt, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Despite many treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), recovery is often moderate at best. and symptoms often persist after treatment. This mixed-method study explored whether an active imagination protocol could serve as an effective low-cost, drug-free intervention for complex PTSD or persisting symptoms after a traumatic event. Seventeen participants were assessed using the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS), Multiscale Dissociation Inventory (MDI), and the Ryff Scales of Psychological Wellbeing (PWB) before and after a four-session, one-to-one active imagination intervention. On average, all quantitative scores significantly improved from baseline, and every subscale improved. For the sample average, PTSD symptoms decreased by 32%, …

Rasquinha, Kiruthiga Mone, Chandirasegaran Massilamany, Ninaad Lasrado, Channabasavaiah B. Gurumurthy, Raymond A Sobel, Jay Reddy

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

Myocarditis is one of the major causes of heart failure in children and young adults and can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy. Lymphocytic myocarditis could result from autoreactive CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, but defining antigen specificity in disease pathogenesis is challenging. To address this issue, we generated T cell receptor (TCR) transgenic (Tg) C57BL/6J mice specific to cardiac myosin heavy chain (Myhc)-α 334-352 and found that Myhc-α-specific TCRs were expressed in both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. To investigate if the phenotype is more pronounced in a myocarditis-susceptible genetic background, we backcrossed with A/J mice. At …

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses that can sometimes cause severe disease in humans; however, they are maintained in mammalian host populations without causing harm. In Panama, sigmodontine rodents serve as hosts to transmissible hantaviruses. Due to natural and anthropogenic forces, these rodent populations are having increased contact with humans.

METHODS: We extracted RNA and performed Illumina deep metatranscriptomic sequencing on Orthohantavirus seropositive museum tissues from rodents. We acquired sequence reads mapping to Choclo virus (CHOV, Orthohantavirus chocloense) from heart and kidney tissue of a two-decade old frozen museum sample from a Costa Rican pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys costaricensis) collected …

Physical, Chemical, And Biological Methods Of Large-Scale Water Decontamination, Belmin Kolenovic Jan 2024

Physical, Chemical, And Biological Methods Of Large-Scale Water Decontamination, Belmin Kolenovic

Seton Hall Biochemistry II Annals of Student Reviews

Considering water is the solvent of life, there is a lack of attention to what is added to it and how it impacts not only the environment but also society at large. In recent years, public scrutiny of the actions of individuals and industries concerning their negative actions on the environment has increased. General trends have seen a shift toward reusability and the reduction of pollutants. Examples include the use of reusable water bottles and the shift to biodegradable straws and paper cups. A plastic bottle casually floating atop a river is easily noticeable as a form of pollution but …

Book 6: Odysseus Meets The Maiden, Erwin F. Cook Jan 2024

Book 6: Odysseus Meets The Maiden, Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

It is a commonplace among Homeric scholars that Scheria is a gateway between worlds. In what follows I shift focus to the role the Phaeacians play in facilitating Odysseus’s passage home, beyond doing so literally. My basic claim is that Odysseus is reintegrated into a functioning human society on Scheria before reestablishing his domestic relationships on Ithaca. He there establishes xenia, or guest-friendship, with the royal household, an institution that throughout the poem epitomizes civilized values. In this, Nausicaa plays a central role, and she too stands at the threshold of changing identities, from virgin princess to an adult …

Dpr-Mediated H2o2 Resistance Contributes To Streptococci Survival In A Cystic Fibrosis Airway Model System, Rendi R. Rogers Jan 2024

Dpr-Mediated H2o2 Resistance Contributes To Streptococci Survival In A Cystic Fibrosis Airway Model System, Rendi R. Rogers

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The cystic fibrosis (CF) lung environment is conducive to the colonization of bacteria as polymicrobial biofilms, which are associated with poor clinical outcomes for persons with CF (pwCF). Streptococcus spp. is highly prevalent in the CF airway, but its role in the CF lung microbiome is poorly understood. Some studies have shown Streptococcus spp. to be associated with better clinical outcomes for pwCF, while others show that high abundance of Streptococcus spp. is correlated with exacerbations. Our lab previously reported a polymicrobial culture system consisting of four CF-relevant pathogens that can be used to study microbial behavior in a more …

Reevaluating Positive Freedom Through The Philosophy Of Amartya Sen With A Focus On Education As A Catalyst For Freedom, Emilie Mathilde Vesten Haakansson Jan 2024

Reevaluating Positive Freedom Through The Philosophy Of Amartya Sen With A Focus On Education As A Catalyst For Freedom, Emilie Mathilde Vesten Haakansson

Theses and Dissertations

Education has since ancient times been used as a societal tool to develop and cultivate society’s individuals into participating members. Education which is considered a fundamental human right also holds potential transformative power to enable and empower individuals to exercise their freedom to create a life that aligns with their own values, ideas and goals. However, how effective an educational system can be, ultimately depends on the accessibility and quality of the education as well as the overall system the educational institutions operate in. This thesis explores how education can function as a catalyst for furthering individuals’ freedom through a …

Children's Right To Access Potentially Critical Learning: Liberating Youth From Propagation Of Structural Injustice, Melina Constantine Bell Jan 2024

Children's Right To Access Potentially Critical Learning: Liberating Youth From Propagation Of Structural Injustice, Melina Constantine Bell

Scholarly Articles

Over the past two years, U.S. states have passed educational gag orders (“EGOs”) that prohibit teaching about antiracism and LGBTQ+ identities. EGOs are destructive in at least two ways. First, they violate children’s right to access information that is potentially critical for their individual well-being. Second, they interfere with cultivating mutual respect in a pluralistic society, which serves children’s present and future wellbeing interests. In this article, I aim to demonstrate the harms that EGOs inflict, and how revising the legal framework governing children’s rights in the United States can increase both children’s and adults’ well-being. That revision entails the …

Non-Investment Finance In An Nft World, Joan Macleod Heminway

Book Chapters

Recent years have witnessed the rise of NFTs as vehicles for non-investment finance, including in nonprofit and political fundraising. As with other financial sectors in which NFTs have a role, the use of NFTs in financing nonprofits and political campaigns and committees has revealed gaps and ambiguities in existing legal regulatory systems. Appetite exists to evolve legal frameworks to complete and clarify applicable bodies of law and regulation.

This chapter undertakes to illuminate and reflect on the use of NFTs in financing nonprofits, political campaigns, and political committees. It begins by reviewing general aspects of the non-investment Internet finance environment …

A Narrative Analysis Of Gensis 15, Patrick Russell Jan 2024

A Narrative Analysis Of Gensis 15, Patrick Russell

Obsculta

This paper seeks to read Genesis 15 through a narrative lens. While historical critical method provides some framework, the main purpose is to read this text as a work of literature: a story told to an audience to convey something of shared importance. What theological insights a reader gains from this literary approach may be different from that which one sees when analyzing the text with a more tradition lens.

Gis-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis For Marine Energy Site Selection: A Case Study Comparison Between Puerto Rico And Hawaii, Sarah Hall Jan 2024

Gis-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis For Marine Energy Site Selection: A Case Study Comparison Between Puerto Rico And Hawaii, Sarah Hall

Environmental Studies Honors Papers

Geospatial information systems (GIS) enable easy visualization of geospatial data representing different criteria important for optimal siting of marine energy projects. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) is a geospatial analysis method that facilitates the evaluation of multiple, usually overlapping, site criteria. While GIS-based MCDA has been used extensively for land-based renewable energy projects, limited research exists on its application to marine-based renewable energy projects. Similarly, most literature overlooks the integration of social or environmental justice data. This project applies GIS-based MCDA to conduct site selection analysis for two marine renewable energy (MRE) projects in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. The results for …
