Emerging Perspectives Of Synaptic Biomarkers In Als And Ftd, Karthik Krishnamurthy, Raj Kumar Pradhan Jan 2024

Emerging Perspectives Of Synaptic Biomarkers In Als And Ftd, Karthik Krishnamurthy, Raj Kumar Pradhan

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Staff Papers and Presentations

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) are debilitating neurodegenerative diseases with shared pathological features like transactive response DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) inclusions and genetic mutations. Both diseases involve synaptic dysfunction, contributing to their clinical features. Synaptic biomarkers, representing proteins associated with synaptic function or structure, offer insights into disease mechanisms, progression, and treatment responses. These biomarkers can detect disease early, track its progression, and evaluate therapeutic efficacy. ALS is characterized by elevated neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood, correlating with disease progression. TDP-43 is another key ALS biomarker, its mislocalization linked …

Female Labor Force Rates In South Asia, Shagufta Haque, Caleb Johnson Jan 2024

Female Labor Force Rates In South Asia, Shagufta Haque, Caleb Johnson

Pennsylvania Economic Review

Female labor force participation rates are an important element of emerging markets. Yet, there have been relatively few analyses of female labor force participation among countries in Asia. This study investigates the demographic, economic, and global factors that determine the female labor force participation rates (FLFPR) in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan with a panel data sample of annual data ranging from 2000-2019. Based on the results of a Hausman (1978) test, a two-way fixed effects model is estimated to account for unobserved country-specific and time-specific heterogeneity. Explanatory variables include remittances, internet access, fertility rates, inflation rates, school enrollment rates, foreign …

Questioning Reality: The Progressive Development Of Modern Physics, Joshua Lancman Jan 2024

Questioning Reality: The Progressive Development Of Modern Physics, Joshua Lancman

STEM for Success Showcase

Humanity has a tendency to divide time. The past is distinct from the present which is entirely separate from the future. In supposedly 20-20 vision history is neatly divided into different sections, distinct eras with sharp lines between them. What is present and in the future is always modern. What is past is something else with another name.

Yet time is not divided so neatly. We know this living through it: years and decades blend into one another in a non-uniform progression. To divide human history into separate eras is a necessary simplification, as it helps to ascribe order onto …

Through Their Eyes: Illuminating The Nature Of Animal Use In Conservation Research Through An Analysis Of Peer-Reviewed Literature In The Journal Conservation Biology, Sarah Hollmann

Theses and Dissertations

Non-human animals habitually have been treated as a resource in the service of humans and human-driven values. The field of conservation is not immune to this fact. But, because conservation is seemingly dedicated to the saving and protection of species and nature, until recently the field historically has been given a pass for the use and treatment of animals that are done “in the name of conservation”. This treatment is evident in common conservation practices such as capture, captivity, invasive sampling, aversive treatment, experimental manipulation, and intentional killing. A principal question we are asking is how individual animals are impacted …

Evaluating Differences In Expression Of Neuroticism In Individual Homed Cats And Feral Cat Colonies Across Varying Degrees Of Human Settlement, Sophie Ambrosino

Theses and Dissertations

Neuroticism is a dimension of personality that was first defined for human psychology as a collective measure of excessive tendencies towards stress, anxiety, fear, unwarranted aggression and/or instability. In a two-part study, this project aimed to identify neuroticism as an observable personality dimension in domesticated cats, and to investigate if the expression of neuroticism varies on an individual and population level in correlation with an increase in environmental stressors and scarcity based upon degree of urbanization of the site. One component of the study surveyed cat owners about personality traits and daily lifestyle of their cats to test the viability …

Francesco Clemente: In One's Self Lies The Whole World, Lorraine Robinson Jan 2024

Francesco Clemente: In One's Self Lies The Whole World, Lorraine Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Francesco Clemente’s body of work, especially between 1992 and 2014, theoretically draws from the Hindu concept of the avatāra, wherein the figures he portrays interminably exist in a state of flux and unraveling. Many of the figures discussed are inspired by Indian spirituality, mythology, and popular culture. Nonetheless, rather than comprehending them as literal interpretations, they exist through a prism of references.

The research conducted throughout this thesis combines analyses gathered from academic essays and books by notable Indian scholars, such as Jyotindra Jain and Partha Mitter. These two distinct voices coalesce to elucidate deep insight into Clemente’s aesthetic, personal, …

Secreted Igm Modulates Il-10 Expression In B Cells, Shannon Mcgettigan, Lazaro Aira, Gaurav Kumar, Romain Ballet, Eugene Butcher, Nicole Baumgarth, Gudrun Debes

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

IL-10+ B cells are critical for immune homeostasis and restraining immune responses in infection, cancer, and inflammation; however, the signals that govern IL-10+ B cell differentiation are ill-defined. Here we find that IL-10+ B cells expand in mice lacking secreted IgM ((s)IgM–/–) up to 10-fold relative to wildtype (WT) among all major B cell and regulatory B cell subsets. The IL-10+ B cell increase is polyclonal and presents within 24 hours of birth. In WT mice, sIgM is produced prenatally and limits the expansion of IL-10+ B cells. Lack of the high affinity …

BACKGROUND: Functional inactivation of ATRX characterizes large subgroups of malignant gliomas in adults and children. ATRX deficiency in glioma induces widespread chromatin remodeling, driving transcriptional shifts and oncogenic phenotypes. Effective strategies to therapeutically target these broad epigenomic sequelae remain undeveloped.

METHODS: We utilized integrated multiomics and the Broad Institute Connectivity Map (CMAP) to identify drug candidates that could potentially revert ATRX-deficient transcriptional changes. We then employed disease-relevant experimental models to evaluate functional phenotypes, coupling these studies with epigenomic profiling to elucidate molecular mechanism(s).

RESULTS: CMAP analysis and transcriptional/epigenomic profiling implicated the Class III HDAC Sirtuin2 (SIRT2) as a central mediator …

Vibroscape Analysis Reveals Acoustic Niche Overlap And Plastic Alteration Of Vibratory Courtship Signals In Ground-Dwelling Wolf Spiders, Noori Choi, Pat Miller, Eileen A. Hebets

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

To expand the scope of soundscape ecology to encompass substrate-borne vibrations (i.e. vibroscapes), we analyzed the vibroscape of a deciduous forest floor using contact microphone arrays followed by automated processing of large audio datasets. We then focused on vibratory signaling of ground-dwelling Schizocosa wolf spiders to test for (i) acoustic niche partitioning and (ii) plastic behavioral responses that might reduce the risk of signal interference from substrate-borne noise and conspecific/heterospecific signaling. Two closely related species - S. stridulans and S. uetzi - showed high acoustic niche overlap across space, time, and dominant frequency. Both species show plastic behavioral …

Fusionpdb:: A Knowledgebase Of Human Fusion Proteins, Himansu Kumar, Lin-Ya Tang, Chengyuan Yang, Pora Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Tumorigenic functions due to the formation of fusion genes have been targeted for cancer therapeutics (i.e. kinase inhibitors). However, many fusion proteins involved in various cellular processes have not been studied for targeted therapeutics. This is because the lack of complete fusion protein sequences and their whole 3D structures has made it challenging to develop new therapeutic strategies. To fill these critical gaps, we developed a computational pipeline and a resource of human fusion proteins named FusionPDB, available at https://compbio.uth.edu/FusionPDB. FusionPDB is organized into four levels: 43K fusion protein sequences (14.7K in-frame fusion genes, Level 1), over 2300 + 1267 …

Examining The Role Of Mononormative Beliefs, Stigma, And Internalized Consensual Non-Monogamy Negativity For Dehumanization, David L. Rodrigues, Thomas R. Brooks, Rhonda N. Balzarini, Amy C. Moors, Diniz Lopes Jan 2024

Examining The Role Of Mononormative Beliefs, Stigma, And Internalized Consensual Non-Monogamy Negativity For Dehumanization, David L. Rodrigues, Thomas R. Brooks, Rhonda N. Balzarini, Amy C. Moors, Diniz Lopes

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Interest in consensually non-monogamous (CNM) relationships has been increasing in the general population in recent years. However, given the cultural dominance of monogamy and the normative expectations often imposed through socialization (i.e., mononormativity), people in CNM relationships may experience negativity, which can become internalized and harm their individual and relationship health. The present study investigated if mononormativity beliefs and CNM relationship stigma were associated with more dehumanization and if internalized CNM negativity was an underlying mechanism for these associations. Results showed that participants who endorsed more mononormative beliefs and CNM relationship stigma also reported more internalized CNM negativity. In turn, …

Dimerization Of The 4ig Isoform Of B7-H3 In Tumor Cells Mediates Enhanced Proliferation And Tumorigenic Signaling, Margie N Sutton, Sarah E Glazer, Riccardo Muzzioli, Ping Yang, Seth T Gammon, David Piwnica-Worms

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

B7-H3 (CD276) has two isoforms (2Ig and 4Ig), no confirmed cognate receptor, and physiological functions that remain elusive. While differentially expressed on many solid tumors correlating with poor survival, mechanisms of how B7-H3 signals in cis (tumor cell) versus in trans (immune cell co-regulator) to elicit pro-tumorigenic phenotypes remain poorly defined. Herein, we characterized a tumorigenic and signaling role for tumor cell-expressed 4Ig-B7-H3, the dominant human isoform, in gynecological cancers that could be abrogated upon CRISPR/Cas9 knockout of B7-H3; tumorigenesis was rescued upon re-expression of 4Ig-B7-H3. Size exclusion chromatography revealed dimerization states for the extracellular domains of both human 4Ig- …

Lipases can catalyze synthesis reactions in a micro aqueous system, producing useful partial glycerides (mono- and diglycerides), and these compounds are commonly utilized in different products as surfactants. Depending on the microbial sources for lipases, immobilization conditions, and starting substrates for synthesis reaction, the composition and yields of the resulting partial glycerides could be variable. These differences could lead to the final efficacy of partial glycerides as surfactants in targeted products. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a group of immobilized lipases from different microbial sources with information about substrate specificity to produce effective partial glycerides for various product types. …
