New-Generation Social And Political Ideas In The 2023 Phan Waen Fah Award–Winning Short Stories, Khwanchanok Naijarun
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This research is aimed at analyzing the social and political ideas of new-generation characters (i.e., teenagers, young adults, university students) in the short stories that won the Phan Waen Fah Literature Prize in 2023. The study employs a qualitative methodology to understand and interpret the ten out of thirteen prize-winning short stories. Through textual analysis, the study identifies two main concepts explored in the narratives, namely, liberal democracy, which includes freedom of sexuality and freedom of speech, and moral politics, which encompasses respecting elders, being a good person under a democratic regime, fostering unity, and being wise about using technology. …

The Ideal “Home/Family” Vs. (Possibly) Unbeautiful Realities: Meanings And Reflections In Kadee Rak Raang, Wipada Rattanadilok Na Phuket
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This analysis of the novel Kadee Rak Raang (The Case of Abandoned Love) is aimed at studying the changing meaning of the word “home” as illustrated in the text and at examining the home as a space where the roles and identities of women are expressed. The researcher posits that home is not just a physical space, but also a cultural space. Ideally, home/family is characterized by having complete family members, being a happy space, and being a safe zone or a mental shelter. However, when this ideal cannot be maintained, the concept of home/ family may be negotiated and …
From “Black” To “Khaek”: Thai Superiority And Ethnic Assimilation In King Vajiravudh’S Adaptation Of Othello, Phaya Ratchawangsan, Faris Yothasamuth
From “Black” To “Khaek”: Thai Superiority And Ethnic Assimilation In King Vajiravudh’S Adaptation Of Othello, Phaya Ratchawangsan, Faris Yothasamuth
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Phaya Ratchawangsan is a Thai adaptation by King Vajiravudh in 1911 of Shakespeare’s Othello. It mainly follows the plot of Othello, but the settings and all characters are changed to resemble Thai places and names. Othello the Moor becomes the Malay general Phaya Ratchawangsan. As Othello presents the relationship between the “blackamoor” and white Europeans, so Phaya Ratchawangsan presents the relationship between the Malay outsider or “Khaek” and Thais. This article argues that as King Vajiravudh transposed Othello to the Thai setting, the racial theme persisted. While Phaya Ratchawangsan does not exhibit a direct racist thought that targets the Malay, …

The Development Of A Rabies Virus-Vectored Vaccine Against Borrelia Burgdorferi, Targeting Bbi39, Shantel Rios, Bibek Bhattachan, Kruthi Vavilikolanu, Chrysoula Kitsou, Utpal Pal, Matthias J. Schnell
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Lyme disease (LD) is the most common tick-borne illness in the United States (U.S.), Europe, and Asia. Borrelia burgdorferi, a spirochete bacterium transmitted by the tick vector Ixodes scapularis, causes LD in the U.S. If untreated, Lyme arthritis, heart block, and meningitis can occur. Given the absence of a human Lyme disease vaccine, we developed a vaccine using the rabies virus (RABV) vaccine vector BNSP333 and an outer surface borrelial protein, BBI39. BBI39 was previously utilized as a recombinant protein vaccine and was protective in challenge experiments; therefore, we decided to utilize this protective antigen in a rabies virus-vectored vaccine …

Extended Event Calculus Using Neutrosophic Logic: Method, Implementation, Analysis, Recent Progress And Future Directions, Antonios Paraskevas
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Brains do not reason as digital computers do. Computers reason in clear steps with statements that are either true or false, while humans reason with vague terms of common sense. Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy and machine intelligence that deals with neutralities, specifically the idea of indeterminacy that is evident and experienced in our everyday lives. Indeterminacy is interpreted as everything that falls between a concept, idea, statement, declaration, etc. and its opposite. The fundamental thesis of neutrosophy is to employ neutrosophic logic, an extension of fuzzy logic, to incorporate fuzzy truth into complex schemes of formal reasoning. …

Impact Of Globalisation On Religious Tourism: The Case Of Vrindavan, India, Charlie Gupta, Ridhu Dhan Gahalot
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The term ‘religious tourism’ refers to travel that is primarily inspired by spiritual beliefs (Smith, 2012). It serves as one of humanity’s oldest religious practices as well as one of the earliest examples of tourism (Timothy, 2011). Due in the main to the numerous sacred places that are dispersed throughout its vast geographic area, India, which is known for its rich heritage and culture, has attracted attention from throughout the world (Eck, 2011; Singh, 2013). As a result, it has become a well-known location for religious tourism. During the past ten years, this specific type of tourism has seen a …

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a common healthcare-associated infection with limited treatment options. Omadacycline, an aminomethylcycline tetracycline, has potent in vitro activity against C difficile and a low propensity to cause CDI in clinical trials. We aimed to assess fecal pharmacokinetics and gut microbiome effects of oral omadacycline compared to oral vancomycin in healthy adults.
METHODS: This was a phase 1, nonblinded, randomized clinical trial conducted in healthy volunteers aged 18-40 years. Subjects received a 10-day course of omadacycline or vancomycin. Stool samples were collected at baseline, daily during therapy, and at follow-up visits. Omadacycline and vancomycin stool concentrations …

Therapeutic Antibodies For The Prevention And Treatment Of Cancer, Mukesh Kumar, Akansha Jalota, Sushil Kumar Sahu, Shabirul Haque
Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
The developments of antibodies for cancer therapeutics have made remarkable success in recent years. There are multiple factors contributing to the success of the biological molecule including origin of the antibody, isotype, affinity, avidity and mechanism of action. With better understanding of mechanism of cancer progression and immune manipulation, recombinant formats of antibodies are used to develop therapeutic modalities for manipulating the immune cells of patients by targeting specific molecules to control the disease. These molecules have been successful in minimizing the side effects instead caused by small molecules or systemic chemotherapy but because of the developing therapeutic resistance against …

Filoviruses comprise a family of single-stranded, negative-sense RNA viruses with a significant impact on human health. Given the risk for disease outbreaks, as highlighted by the recent outbreaks across Africa, there is an unmet need for flexible diagnostic technologies that can be deployed in resource-limited settings. Herein, we highlight the use of plasmonic-fluor lateral flow assays (PF-LFA) for the rapid, quantitative detection of an Ebolavirus-secreted glycoprotein, a marker for infection. Plasmonic fluors are a class of ultrabright reporter molecules that combine engineered nanorods with conventional fluorophores, resulting in improved analytical sensitivity. We have developed a PF-LFA for

A dense, pungent, brown-green, intricately woven, itchy-silky, moss-strewn, twig- ridden ball brought us together.Since then, nest(ing)[i] has become a shared methodology - nest/ing has offered a praxis of getting to know each other, getting to know nests (better) and it has become a capacious writing methodology. Taking nest(ing) seriously has drawn into sharp focus the perils of human exceptionalism. Nesting has gifted opportunities to wallow in porous boundaries and to luxuriate in modes of liminal reading/writing/experimenting, informed by a feminist politics to imagine the world differently (Despret, 2016). It is through lively storytelling, involving passing patterns back and forth that …

While augmented reality (AR) devices enable users to provide queries via different modalities such as touch, gesture, voice, camera, etc., providing multimodal queries currently requires a user to perform multiple manual steps. This disclosure describes techniques, implemented with user permission, for automatic intelligent multimodal input capture by an AR device to understand user queries by automatically capturing input from additional modalities besides the one that the user uses to provide the query. The initial query (e.g., a spoken query) is decoded, e.g., with a transformer decoder, and if the query indicates an additional modality for input, the decoding is paused, …
