Effects Of Beauveria Bassiana On The Mortality And Thorax Width Of Bombus Impatiens Colonies, Bri Petty Jan 2024

Effects Of Beauveria Bassiana On The Mortality And Thorax Width Of Bombus Impatiens Colonies, Bri Petty

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Pesticides are widely used to protect against unwanted insects, but risk assessments of the effects on pollinators have traditionally only been applied on an individual level, not a population level. This has allowed many pesticides to be approved without the knowledge of sub-lethal effects, such as life history characteristics and population structure to name a few. The biopesticide BotaniGard, containing the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, has previously been thought to be safe for non-targeted insects, but recent studies have found it to have significant negative effects on pollinators. Such negative effects can include decrease in longevity and odorant responsiveness with …

Animal Conservation In St. Louis, Kate O'Sullivan Jan 2024

Animal Conservation In St. Louis, Kate O'Sullivan

Undergraduate Research Symposium

St. Louis has a multitude of organizations involved in the natural sciences. But how many of them actually contribute towards animal conservation? The St. Louis Zoo is an organization that focuses a lot of its effort on presentation, so how does that impact the funds that go towards actually saving the animals? I plan to dive into the different animal-based organizations in St. Louis and its surrounding areas, as well as discuss the positives and negatives of each organization. Furthermore, I will provide examples from several sources that I have been reviewing all year to support my claims. I plan …

Surveys Of Aphonopelma Hentzi In Missouri: Conservation Efforts Through Population, Genetics, And Habitat Studies, Anderson B. Spencer Mr., Becky Hansis-O'Niell Jan 2024

Surveys Of Aphonopelma Hentzi In Missouri: Conservation Efforts Through Population, Genetics, And Habitat Studies, Anderson B. Spencer Mr., Becky Hansis-O'Niell

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Aphonopelma hentzi and other tarantula species are greatly understudied organisms. In the Missouri regions there is little knowledge on their mating patterns, gene diversity, or population sizes. The focal glades in this experiment display regional fragmentation, which could prevent tarantulas from traveling and mating between regions of their glades. Due to the lack of knowledge surrounding them, methods for determining gene diversity are harmful to the organism. Our recent work has shown that it is possible to extract genetic information from the molts of burrowing tarantulas. This will allow us to safely determine the lineages and interbreeding patterns of the …

The Effect Of Caffeine On Bee Behavior: A Progressive Ratio Study, Kayle Cohen, Becky Hansis-O'Neill, Aimee Dunlap Dr Jan 2024

The Effect Of Caffeine On Bee Behavior: A Progressive Ratio Study, Kayle Cohen, Becky Hansis-O'Neill, Aimee Dunlap Dr

Undergraduate Research Symposium

This presentation focuses on the effect of caffeine on bee behavior using behavioral pharmacology methodologies. Researchers trained bumblebees to drink out of artificial flowers, then administered sucrose nectar or caffeinated sucrose nectar during a schedule of progressive and fixed ratios. The finding suggests that caffeine did increase the number of rewards during the fixed ratio, but not in the progressive ratio. However, research is still ongoing as bees continue to be tested..

The Semantic Field Of “Love” In Javanese Language, Larasati Mauli Amane Hendryanto, Widhyasmaramurti Widhyasmaramurti

International Review of Humanities Studies

This research delves into the extensive lexicon of the Javanese language, specifically focusing on expressions related to feelings of love. The presence of multiple Javanese lexicons denoting love poses a significant challenge, prompting the central question: What are the semantic nuances that distinguish each lexicon, given the absence of absolute synonyms? The research aims to elucidate the semantic fields that differentiate each love-related lexicon in Javanese. Data for this research is drawn from four distinct Javanese dictionaries, spanning various publication periods. Additionally, the study incorporates diverse data sources, including a book titled "Antologi Cerita Pendek Bahasa Jawa di Yogyakarta …

‘Rounding Up’ Roundup: One Last Hope For Glyphosate Regulation, Gabrielle Argimón-Cartaya Jan 2024

‘Rounding Up’ Roundup: One Last Hope For Glyphosate Regulation, Gabrielle Argimón-Cartaya

University of Miami Law Review

Since 1974, Bayer’s Roundup remains the world’s most popular herbicide and pervades United States farmland and food production. However, in 2015, Roundup landed centerstage in an international and presently unsettled debate over whether its active ingredient, glyphosate, causes cancer. Environmental groups regularly call for the de-registration of glyphosate due to the plethora of ailments, ecological harm, and weed resistance resulting from glyphosate use. Dissenting experts, however, believe that strict bans would devastate agriculture because of global dependence and the lack of any popular alternatives. Faced with mounting litigation, silence from the highest court, and unreliable regulators, Bayer continues to effect …

The House Of Cards Topples: Examining Appellate Jurisdiction For Transfers Of Venue In Federal Court, Mac Newton Jan 2024

The House Of Cards Topples: Examining Appellate Jurisdiction For Transfers Of Venue In Federal Court, Mac Newton

Missouri Law Review

Many a lunch table argument has been had about a battle between unlikely foes. Who would win: a gorilla or a grizzly bear? A great white shark or a crocodile? Opponents throw their support behind one animal or another and vigorously debate the matchup—“a grizzly bear might be bigger, but a gorilla has opposable thumbs and superior intelligence!” As thrilling and engaging as these debates may be, participants recognize their theoretical nature. Part of the fun is that the question “who would win?” is often unanswerable. The hypothetical combatants simply do not encounter one another in the wild, leaving the …

Development Of Monitoring Systems Using Computer Vision Techniques For Precise Fish Farming, Abinaya N.S Jan 2024

Development Of Monitoring Systems Using Computer Vision Techniques For Precise Fish Farming, Abinaya N.S

Theses and Dissertations

Fish farm is a biosystem with diversity and uncertainties demanding, an intelligent manual monitoring process, which is labor-intensive, invasive, costly, discontinuous, and persistent. The proposed work aims to develop Computer Vision (CV) -based monitoring techniques for precise fish farming to address these problems. Three major monitoring operations namely (i) Fish behavior analysis, (ii) Fish Classification (FC) and (iii) Biomass estimation have been investigated.

Fish schooling activity has been monitored using an overhead vision camera. Problems associated with fish occlusion are addressed using the weighted K-means clustering technique which provides an accurate estimation of fish school locations. Temporal variations of these …

Getting Serious About Stakeholders, William O. Fisher Jan 2024

Getting Serious About Stakeholders, William O. Fisher

Missouri Law Review

Stakeholder enthusiasm grips public companies and asset managers. Sustainability reports abound, reflecting an appetite for detailed data on company efforts to reduce carbon emissions and water usage and to protect and diversify workforces—while investors still seek returns to finance college tuition and fund retirement. But commentators and those who control public companies fail to engage on fundamental questions: Which stakeholders count? To what degree will companies sacrifice shareholder return to benefit those stakeholders? What happens when the interests of differing sets of non-shareholder stakeholders differ? Is all the commotion really necessary, given the many laws and regulations protecting such stakeholders? …

Seeding A Movement: Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Mariaelena Huambachano Jan 2024

Seeding A Movement: Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Mariaelena Huambachano

University of Miami Law Review

For many Indigenous peoples, well-being is bound up with and inseparable from the natural world. But since colonialism, Indigenous traditions and access to traditional foods or foodways have been disrupted, imperiling their health and well-being. In this Article, I discuss the role of Indigenous cosmovision/worldview and Indigenous Food Sovereignty in achieving environmental justice. Specifically, in this Article, I discuss that despite, or perhaps because of, efforts to deny Indigenous peoples’ access to healthy and culturally appropriate foods, Indigenous Food Sovereignty took a rise of preciousness in informing natural regenerative food systems, and ultimately, “holistic/collective well-being.”

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Rotaviruses (RVs) are a major cause of diarrhea in young children worldwide. The currently available and licensed vaccines contain live attenuated RVs. Optimization of live attenuated RV vaccines or developing non-replicating RV (e.g., mRNA) vaccines is crucial for reducing the morbidity and mortality from RV infections. Herein, a nucleoside-modified mRNA vaccine encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNP) and encoding the VP7 protein from the G1 type of RV was developed. The 5' untranslated region of an isolated human RV was utilized for the mRNA vaccine. After undergoing quality inspection, the VP7-mRNA vaccine was injected by subcutaneous or intramuscular routes into mice. …
