Corn silk (Stigma maydis), the silky hairs on top of maize, is commonly discarded as waste. Despite its traditional medicinal use in countries like China, the United States, France, and Turkey, its phytochemical and pharmacological attributes have received limited study. In this study, the agar well diffusion method was used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of free and bound crude extracts from cornsilk obtained using different solvents. Compared to the free crude extract, the bound crude extract exhibited greater efficacy against the tested microorganisms. Consequently, sequential fractionation was performed on the bound crude extract, and it was found that the …

Simultaneous Detection And Quantification Of Multiple Pathogen Targets In Wastewater, Gouthami Rao, Drew Capone, Kevin Zhu, Abigail Knoble, Yarrow Linden, Ryan Clark, Amanda Lai, Juhee Kim, Ching Hua Huang, Aaron Bivins, Joe Brown

Faculty Publications

Wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as a critical tool for public health surveillance, building on decades of environmental surveillance work for pathogens such as poliovirus. Work to date has been limited to monitoring a single pathogen or small numbers of pathogens in targeted studies; however, few studies consider simultaneous quantitative analysis of a wide variety of pathogens, which could greatly increase the utility of wastewater surveillance. We developed a novel quantitative multi-pathogen surveillance approach (35 pathogen targets including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths) using TaqMan Array Cards (TAC) and applied the method on concentrated wastewater samples collected at four wastewater treatment …

Energy And Spectrum Efficient Federated Learning Via High-Precision Over-The-Air Computation, Liang Li, Chenpei Huang, Dian Shi, Hao Wang, Xiangwei Zhou, Minglei Shu, Miao Pan

Faculty Publications

Federated learning (FL) enables mobile devices to collaboratively learn a shared prediction model while keeping data locally. However, there are two major research challenges to practically deploy FL over mobile devices: (i) frequent wireless updates of huge size gradients v.s. limited spectrum resources, and (ii) energy-hungry FL communication and local computing during training v.s. battery-constrained mobile devices. To address those challenges, in this paper, we propose a novel multi-bit over-the-air computation (M-AirComp) approach for spectrum-efficient aggregation of local model updates in FL and further present an energy-efficient FL design for mobile devices. Specifically, a high-precision digital modulation scheme is designed …

Asphaltenes, a distinct class of molecules found in crude oil, exhibit insolubility in nonpolar solvents like n-heptane but are soluble in aromatic solvents such as toluene and benzene. Understanding asphaltenes is crucial in the petroleum industry due to their detrimental effects on oil processing, resulting in significant economic losses and production disruptions. While no singular structure defines asphaltenes, two major molecular architectures, namely archipelago and continental models, have gained wide acceptance for their consistency with various experimental investigations and subsequent use in computational studies.

The archipelago model comprises two or more polyaromatic hydrocarbon entities interconnected via aliphatic side chains. In …

Puros Técnicos And Luchadores Rudos: Debating The New Cultural History Among Latin Americanists, Carl Friesenhahn Feb 2024

Puros Técnicos And Luchadores Rudos: Debating The New Cultural History Among Latin Americanists, Carl Friesenhahn

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This essay dives into the debate and surrounding context of a special issue of the Hispanic American Historical Review. It was on the new cultural history—its usefulness, its methods, and its relation to truth. I argue that the new cultural historians eventually vanquished their critics and internalized their methods and epistemology within historians of Latin America at large. Stemming from earlier texts, the special issue of the HAHR is the most revealing collection of texts on the philosophical foundations of the new cultural history. It showcases scholarly activity from supporters and detractors of the novel movement with considerable focus on …

Putting Trust In Voluntary Demand Management: How And Why Wyoming Should Encourage The Development Of A Water Trust, Colton Edwards Feb 2024

Putting Trust In Voluntary Demand Management: How And Why Wyoming Should Encourage The Development Of A Water Trust, Colton Edwards

Wyoming Law Review

The development of water trusts in the American West has followed a similar concept to the land trust model of conservation. Climate change has raised concerns among Colorado River Basin states about their water rights being curtailed. A key avoidance measure taken by states has been to focus on demand management, reducing the amount of water diverted from the river system through voluntary water transactions. While governments have made some investments in water conservation, more money is needed to keep adapting to a changing climate; water trusts can provide such money through investment from private sources. But the legal regime …

Inverse Association Between Exercising Blood Pressure Response And Left Ventricular Chamber Size And Mass In Women Who Habitually Resistance Train, Evan L. Matthews, John J. Guers, Meghan G. Ramick, Peter A. Hosick

Department of Kinesiology Scholarship and Creative Works

Exercise is a major modifiable lifestyle factor that leads to temporarily increased systolic blood pressure (SBP), which is thought to influence left ventricular mass normalized to body surface area (LVM/BSA). This relationship has never been studied in women who habitually perform resistance exercise. Purpose: To determine if a direct correlation exists between the SBP response to resistance exercise (change from rest; eSBP) and LVM/BSA in young healthy women who habitually resistance train. Methods: Leg extension resistance exercise was performed while continuously monitoring blood pressure using finger plethysmography. LVM was estimated using echocardiography. Data are shown as mean ± SD. Results: …

A Municipal Modernity: Women, Architecture, And Public Health In Working-Class New York, 1913–1950, Jessica Fletcher

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“A Municipal Modernity” is the first study to analyze the architectural history of the district health centers in New York City that women reformers and their allies founded to address poor health in working-class communities. It reveals that women’s philanthropic adaptive re-use was foundational to the architecture of the public health care in New York and led to a program of municipal district health centers. Philanthropic reformers adapted buildings in the 1910s and 1920s to provide affordable health care for low-income women and children in European immigrant and Black neighborhoods. During the New Deal, municipal officials followed the example set …

The Divided Self: Internal Conflict In Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, And Neuroscience, Yulia Greyman Feb 2024

The Divided Self: Internal Conflict In Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, And Neuroscience, Yulia Greyman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thematic project examines the notion of self-division, particularly in terms of the conflict between cognition and metacognition, across the fields of philosophy, psychology, and, most recently, the cognitive and neurosciences. The project offers a historic overview of models of self-division, as well as analyses of the various problems presented in theoretical models to date. This work explores how self-division has been depicted in the literary works of Edgar Allan Poe, Don DeLillo, and Mary Shelley. It examines the ways in which artistic renderings alternately assimilate, resist, and/or critique dominant philosophical, psychological, and scientific discourses about the self and its …

Trees In Urban Environments: How Soil Quality Impacts Tree Performance, Saidan Qi Feb 2024

Trees In Urban Environments: How Soil Quality Impacts Tree Performance, Saidan Qi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Cities around the world are increasingly investing in reforestation and afforestation efforts to mitigate impacts from climate change and population growth. However, urban soil conditions can be unfavorable for tree growth. Street trees are widely known to suffer from poor soil quality, but there has been no comprehensive review of this topic so far. Clean soils can be transported from nonurban areas to support cities’ green projects, but this approach is not sustainable. Artificial (constructed) soils can be created from various materials and have been proposed as an alternative medium for urban tree growth, but no research has been done …

On Behalf Of All Others Similarly Situated: Class Representation & Equitable Compensation, Alexander J. Noronha Feb 2024

On Behalf Of All Others Similarly Situated: Class Representation & Equitable Compensation, Alexander J. Noronha

Michigan Law Review

Class actions require class representation. In class actions, plaintiffs litigate not only on their own behalf but “on behalf of all others similarly situated.” For almost fifty years, federal courts have routinely exercised their inherent equitable authority to award modest compensation to deserving class representatives who help recover common funds benefiting the plaintiff class. These discretionary “incentive awards” are generally intended to compensate class representatives for shouldering certain costs and risks—which are not borne by absent class members—during the pendency of class litigation.

The ubiquity of permitting class action incentive awards ended in 2020. In an extraordinary ruling, the Eleventh …

Introduction: Hugh Macdiarmid At 100, Scott Lyall Feb 2024

Introduction: Hugh Macdiarmid At 100, Scott Lyall

Studies in Scottish Literature

Explains the background for this special issue, Hugh MacDiarmid at 100, in the Scottish Revival Network’s conference in August 2022, which marked the centenary of Hugh MacDiarmid’s first appearance in print under that name in The Scottish Chapbook in August 1922, and then, before summarizing the themes of each essay, discusses ways in which MacDiarmid’s legacy and reputation have become central to the Scottish literary canon but somewhat marginal to canonical modernism,

Chitterin’ Lichts: Text And Intertext In Sangschaw And Penny Wheep, Patrick Crotty Feb 2024

Chitterin’ Lichts: Text And Intertext In Sangschaw And Penny Wheep, Patrick Crotty

Studies in Scottish Literature

The essay takes a new look at an old subject, the role of dictionaries in Hugh MacDiarmid’s so-called ‘early lyrics’. While demonstrating that the poet’s exploration of the lexicographical remains of Scots was more thorough-going and systematic than previous accounts have suggested, it positions his recourse to dictionaries in the intertextual habit that links the lyrics both to the English sonnets and prose sketches of the young Christopher Grieve and the encyclopaedic long poems to which MacDiarmid turned after abandoning Scots in the 1930s. The article attends in particular to the wide-angle allusiveness of Sangschaw and Penny Wheep, arguing that …

Linguistic Islands: Archipelagic Perspectives In Hugh Macdiarmid’S ‘Vision Of World Language’, Fiona Paterson Feb 2024

Linguistic Islands: Archipelagic Perspectives In Hugh Macdiarmid’S ‘Vision Of World Language’, Fiona Paterson

Studies in Scottish Literature

Examines the impact of an archipelagic perspective upon Hugh MacDiarmid’s ‘vision of world language’ as set forth in the 1955 poem In Memoriam James Joyce. Informed by his travels to Scottish islands, documented in The Islands of Scotland (1939), and his engagements with Norn in Shetland, MacDiarmid’s vision is both expansive and particular, characterised by its decentralised plurality, and driven by an attempt to capture both simultaneity and progressivism.

Meals In Mississippi, Fayth Ousby Feb 2024

Meals In Mississippi, Fayth Ousby

ENGL 1101 Showcase

I grew up in a small town known as Goodman. My family has spent many years here as we own most of the land in said town. While my ancestors migrated here, our ways of cultivating have made a considerable impact on the town. I got to enjoy fresh fruit every morning and vegetables straight from the field. We have always had an abundance of food, so much that we share it with everyone. Everything from the berries and watermelon to beans and cotton. It was a large gathering place for the town as well. Even at this moment, the …

Atlanta Anthems, Richard D. Booker

ENGL 1101 Showcase

An Atlanta anthem is a work of art created to explain, visualize, or celebrate what goes on in the city of Atlanta. Atlanta anthems can be in the form of a song, drawing, graphic, video, etc. Atlanta anthems often convey their message by showing the lifestyles, activities, and common traditions of the average Atlanta native. Prime examples of Atlanta anthems are the song “Welcome to Atlanta” by Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris, the music video “A-Town” by Lil Baby and Marlo, and the Culture album cover by Migos.
