Soil Health Cycle, Bijesh Maharjan, Saurav Das, Vesh R. Thapa, Bharat Sharma Acharya
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Soil health is pivotal to agricultural sustainability. Promoting and sustaining soil health management is challenging since it involves many interdependent components and steps and is an iterative process. Herein, the soil health cycle (SHC) is proposed as a soil health management cycle encompassing human dimensions, management practices, and their effects on soil health indicators (SHIs), leading to subsequent impacts on soil functions. The SHC provides a structure for an iterative testing of changes to improve soil health. A systematic review of research publications was also conducted using the Web of Science database supplemented by Elicit AI and Scopus API searches …

Fisheries Research Articles
Context
Social and economic information is limited for coastal commercial and recreational fisheries, particularly shark fisheries, which are perceived as unsustainable and as targeting sharks for fins.
Aims
To characterise the social and economic dimensions of one of the world’s few long-standing sustainable shark fisheries.
Methods
We reviewed historic data and surveyed stakeholders to understand the economic and social dimensions of the shark fishery currently operating in Western Australia.
Key results
Since the fishery’s historic peak, there has been a substantial reduction in the number of operating vessels and ports due to management intervention. For the vessels that have remained, …

Characterizing The Roles Of Bacterial And Viral Agents In House Crickets (Acheta Domesticus) At Commercial Rearing Facilities In The United States, Kimberly L. Boykin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Feeder insects, and in particular crickets, are becoming more popular as food for humans and domesticated animals. However, disease outbreaks continue to decimate commercial populations. The goals of this dissertation were to characterize the epidemiology of different viral and bacterial pathogens affecting the survival of European house crickets (Acheta domesticus) being raised under mass rearing conditions and identify methods to reduce the impact of these pathogens.
Crickets from nine different producers across the United States were sampled during different seasons to better estimate the prevalence of three pathogenic viruses: Acheta domesticus densovirus (AdDV), Acheta domesticus volvovirus (AdVVV), and …
Addition And Subtraction: Coral Reproduction And Disease In A Changing Ocean, Ashley Rossin
Addition And Subtraction: Coral Reproduction And Disease In A Changing Ocean, Ashley Rossin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Marine diseases are changing the landscapes of coral reefs particularly throughout the Western Atlantic. Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) swept through this region impacting at least 22 stony coral species. White plague (WP) is a more ephemeral disease, but still has a significant impact on coral reef health and perseverance, especially under a changing ocean. While these impacts are seen on the reef-scale, we can zoom into the tissue-level to identify disease markers for both diseases and identify their differences. This has ramifications for disease intervention, as well as mitigation strategies. Despite continuous disease outbreaks, healthy corals persist and …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The situation in Palestine is of concern where global threats of climate change, overexploitation, habitat destruction, invasive species, and pollution are compounded by occupation and conflict. Thus, almost 1/3rd of vascular plant species are rare and over 50 are listed as endangered or rare based on their abundance and presence in grids studied earlier. Here, we describe the development of a conservation botanic garden that works via research, education, and direct in situ and ex situ conservation of plant species. The garden now boasts 381 species of vascular plants (63 are rare). The team scientifically and selectively introduced some …
Do Bulk Nitrogen Isotope Ratios Capture Declines In Captive Muskox Body Condition?, Molly Cook, Garrett Savory
Do Bulk Nitrogen Isotope Ratios Capture Declines In Captive Muskox Body Condition?, Molly Cook, Garrett Savory
2024 Research and Creative Activity Day Posters
We were interested in studying muskox bulk nitrogen isotope ratios to see if these values capture declines in body condition. We were particularly interested in using archived serum from muskox at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Large Animal Research Station from 2009-2010 when there was a decline in the body condition of some individuals due to deficiency in trace minerals. Nitrogen isotope ratios can be analyzed to assess protein balance in animals. Since the lighter isotope of nitrogen (14N) is preferentially excreted in urine, the heavier isotope of nitrogen (15N) is enriched in tissues. As a result, we expect to …

The Sacred And The Supernatural: Christianity And Teutonic Folklore In The Grimms’ Briar Rose, Amelia Stefanescu
The Sacred And The Supernatural: Christianity And Teutonic Folklore In The Grimms’ Briar Rose, Amelia Stefanescu
Honors Theses
During the nineteenth century, the Brothers Grimm undertook the task of preserving German folklore during a time of cultural upheaval and struggle for national identity. One such tale, Briar Rose, emerges as a site of ideological interplay between Christian themes and Teutonic traditions. By analyzing the Grimms’ 1812 (first) and 1857 (last) editions, this thesis investigates how the text reflects and synthesizes these distinct belief systems into a coherent narrative.
The research explores how Christian and pagan elements co-exist within Briar Rose and what these interactions reveal about the cultural and religious dynamics within the folktale. The study argues that …

Threatened shark species are caught in large numbers by artisanal and commercial fisheries and traded globally. Monitoring both which shark species are caught and sold in fisheries, and the export of CITES-restricted products, are essential in reducing illegal fishing. Current methods for species identification rely on visual examination by experts or DNA barcoding techniques requiring specialist laboratory facilities and trained personnel. The need for specialist equipment and/or input from experts means many markets are currently not monitored. We have developed a paper-based Lab-on-A-Chip (LOC) to facilitate identification of three threatened and CITES-listed sharks, bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus), pelagic thresher (A. …

Background: Heavy metals are pervasive pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, posing significant threats to the survival and development of aquatic organisms, particularly during their early life stages. While copper is necessary for fish growth and maturation, elevated levels of dissolved copper in water can lead to adverse effects on early developmental stages. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression pattern of the nkx2.5 gene and the potential of Mt2 expression as a biomarker for metal toxicity. Methods: The study assessed the expression levels of the nkx2.5 gene at different time points during embryonic development, focusing particularly on its …

The KRAS proto-oncogene is a major driver of pancreatic tumorigenesis and is nearly ubiquitously mutated in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). KRAS point mutations are detected in over 90% of PDAC cases, and these mutations have been shown to be associated with worse therapy response and overall survival. Pathogenic KRAS mutations are mostly limited to codons 12, 13 and 61, with G12D, G12V, G12R, Q61H, and G13D accounting for approximately 95% of the mutant cases. Emerging data have shown the importance of specific mutant subtypes, as well as KRAS variant allele frequency on clinical prognosis. Furthermore, novel technologies and therapies are …

California regulates pork; does it offend the Constitution that pork producers in other states must comply with its regulations if they want to sell Californians pork? In National Pork Producers Council v. Ross, the Supreme Court emerged sharply divided in its approach to the practical extraterritorial spillover effect of the in-state regulations of a tantalizing market. Although a fractured majority of the Court upheld California’s Proposition 12 against a dormant Commerce Clause challenge, at least five Justices registered profound discomfort, with one dissenter expressly inviting consideration of the problem through the lens of other clauses. This Article analyzes “the …

Since its introduction, vaccination has improved health outcomes tremendously. However, modern vaccination efforts are still difficult to implement, particularly in developing countries with warm climates. This includes complex and expensive cold-chain management of vaccines to maintain stability, a lack of medical personnel to administer parental vaccines, and needle phobia. As an alternative, dissolvable microneedles have recently been studied for their simple and painless application. In this thesis, I present a novel manufacturing process for polymer-based dissolvable microneedles, loaded with virus-like particles vaccines conjugated to TRIO or Sialokinin peptides to target malaria and arboviruses, respectively. We have performed multiple characterization studies …

The acyl-CoA-binding domain-containing protein 6 (ACBD6) is ubiquitously expressed, plays a role in the acylation of lipids and proteins and regulates the N-myristoylation of proteins via N-myristoyltransferase enzymes (NMTs). However, its precise function in cells is still unclear, as is the consequence of ACBD6 defects on human pathophysiology. Using exome sequencing and extensive international data sharing efforts, we identified 45 affected individuals from 28 unrelated families (consanguinity 93%) with bi-allelic pathogenic, predominantly loss-of-function (18/20) variants in ACBD6. We generated zebrafish and Xenopus tropicalis acbd6 knockouts by CRISPR/Cas9 and characterized the role of ACBD6 on protein N-myristoylation with myristic acid alkyne …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health concern with a dire need for new solutions. This problem has only been exacerbated in recent years due to the misuse of antibiotics and globalization. As new antibiotic drugs are costly and time-intensive, it is imperative to understand and study creative new ways to combat AMR. In both natural ecosystems and clinical infections, microorganisms seldom exist in isolation. Rather, they flourish within polymicrobial communities, presenting unique challenges for therapeutic interventions owing to elaborate inter-species interactions. Two such pathogens are Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA); bacteria commonly found in patients with …

Toxoplasma gondii is a prevalent parasite that has infected more than 40 million people in the USA. House cats and other felids serve as definitive hosts and acquire Toxoplasma by consuming infected prey and intermediate hosts (e.g. rodents). Toxoplasma is known to manipulate prey neurophysiology to enhance its transmission. For example, infected rodents exhibit changes in testosterone, vasopressin, and dopamine. These neurophysiological changes elicit remarkable changes in host behavior: Toxoplasma-infected rodents are more likely to frequent open spaces and are less responsive to normally aversive stimuli (e.g. cat urine). The manipulation of intermediate host neurophysiology and behavior observed in …

Genes such as SERPIND1 play crucial roles in tissue remodeling for sharks while playing a role in cancer metastasis and inflammation in humans. The SERPIND1 gene codes for plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), which is involved in blood clotting. This clotting process is vital for repairing dermal wounds, sealing off the damaged area, and preventing further blood loss. Comparative genomic analysis reveals distinctions between human and shark SERPIND1 genes at different levels such …

How successful were countries colonized by the West in developing compared to countries colonized by the Soviet Union. This paper presented three hypotheses: Former Soviet colonies will be more economically developed than former Western colonies, Former Soviet colonies will be more politically developed than former Western colonies, Former Soviet colonies will be more socially developed than former Western colonies. These hypotheses are derived from the theory that the types of colonialism that the Soviet Union and Western countries practiced were different, meaning that Western European nations created colonies to extract resources from them, rather than to form permanent bonds. This …

A1 Vs A2 Milk Variants And Their Impact On Cysteine Metabolism In Autism-Spectrum Disorder, Esha Patel, Peter Kim
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Dairy cow milk stands as a vital source of nutrients encompassing proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and micronutrients. This nutritional complexity is heightened by the choice between A1 and A2 milk types. This research probes the distinctions between A1 and A2 milk and their potential implications for cysteine metabolism within the context of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study focuses on BCM7, a bioactive opioid peptide exclusively released during digestion of A1 milk, and its impact on mitochondrial respiration of macrophage-like THP1 cells.
Using the Seahorse XF for mitochondrial assessment, oxygen consumption rate (OCR), extracellular acidification rate (ECAR), basal respiration, proton leak, …
