Gmr-29 Identification Of Ai-Generated Images, Chris Foster, Joshua Brock, Harini Kottala, Srilatha Korrapati

C-Day Computing Showcase

With the quick rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), generative AI models have greatly increased the volume and velocity of data creation. Among that data, AI-generated images have become a highly discussed topic, especially when discussing the potential dangers of these AI models. Due to these dangers, being able to distinguish AI-generated art from human-made art is becoming a necessity. Additionally, as these AI-models improve, it is becoming increasingly difficult for humans to determine whether art is AI-generated or human-made. This paper proposes the further exploration of the effectiveness of a current state of the art AI-image identification model.

Headache And Vision Loss As Initial Symptoms For An Acute Invasive Rhino-Orbital-Cerebral Mucormycosis, Thanh Le Od, Gregg Wentworth Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Acute invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a rare fungal infection commonly caused by Rhizopus species. It occurs in immune- compromised individuals who have acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), leukemia, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, or organ transplant patients who are on immunosuppressive therapy. Diagnosing invasive ROCM is challenging because its clinical presentation can be nonspecific, and it is not frequently observed in ophthalmic practices. Case Report: A 66-year-old Hispanic male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus presented with the complaint of severe headache and retrobulbar pain in the right eye. An ophthalmic examination revealed normal ocular health in both eyes. Computerized tomography …

How Techniques That Help To Develop Mental Strength In Individual Sport Such As Tennis Can Be Applied To Dealing With Everyday Stresses And Challenges That Require Resilience., Katsiaryna Starastsenka

Academic Festival

The mental preparation of a tennis player, or any athlete in general, is one of the most crucial characteristics for developing a successful personality. The will, control, and critical thinking are necessary at all stages of an athlete's development. The psychologic aspect is considered multidirectional and is often seen as a determining factor in the formation of the psychology of the winner. It additionally leads to the improvement of physical, technical, and tactical skills. People tend to forget about the importance of the mental aspect because of the daily routine. At the same time, the actual necessity of psychological strength …

Built-In Vehicle Safety Navigation Assistance, Nivedhitha Muralikrishnan, Devadas Murukadas, Sivakumar Palani, Sakthi Bhargavi Kalyanasundaram, Gowri Jegatheesh Manikandan

Defensive Publications Series

For current vehicle/navigation systems, an optimized/best route can be suggested for a desired user destination based on many criteria, such as distance, traffic, etc. However, such routing often does not consider real time factors that may be present for streets, such as the presence of streetlights and their working or operating conditions. In order to address such issues, proposed herein are techniques through which vehicle navigation systems may be enhanced to determine an optimal route for a given destination based on one or more safety features, such as streetlight availability and streetlight operating conditions, for night driving scenarios.

National Pork Producers Council V. Ross And The Dormant Commerce Clause, Jeffrey C. Tuomala Apr 2024

National Pork Producers Council V. Ross And The Dormant Commerce Clause, Jeffrey C. Tuomala

Liberty University Law Review

National Pork Producers Council v. Ross is a dormant Commerce Clause case in which petitioners challenged a California law that restricts the instate sale of pork that comes from breeding pigs “confined in a cruel manner.” Because California comprises 13% of the national pork market, and because most pork consumed in California is raised in other states, the cost of compliance with the law falls largely on out-of-state producers. Pork Producers claimed that the California law placed an excessively heavy burden on interstate commerce, but they did not claim that California targeted out-of-state producers. The Court of Appeals dismissed the …

Passing Away, Xin Li Apr 2024

Passing Away, Xin Li

Theses

My paper revolves these wonderful things from our lives, fading away from our world until even ourselves vanish from this world. I am often hijacked by groundless panic, even when I possess something, I dare not think about losing it, just the thought makes me anxious. I would even rather not have had beautiful things to avoid losing them. In my perception, all beautiful things are fragile, brittle. When I realized I was trapped by this fear, unable to move forward towards a new life, I decided to rescue myself. In the society and culture that I grew up in, …

Creative Expression And Documentation: The Who, How, And Why Of Journaling, Cylia Srmek

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Processes of utilizing methods of creative expression and individuals’ documentations has been studied as a way to promote individual voice and identity, particularly in the contexts of educational and healthcare settings, as well as online spaces. However, studies on interventions of crafting one’s story and understanding the experiences of others have implied that these settings have often failed those that they serve by presenting limited ideas on what expression can look like. Through a series of ten qualitative interviews and a collection of personal journal entries from Valparaiso University students, this project furthers the notion that having the tools to …

Use Of Plastic Nesting Material And Its Potential Impact On American Robin (Turdus Migratorius) Nests, Elissa G. Torgerson, Chloe Kennedy, Li King, Laurie S. Eberhardt

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Rising levels of plastic pollution in the environment continue to impact aquatic and terrestrial organisms, including birds when they incorporate it into their nests. Whether the use of plastic as nesting material is entirely helpful or harmful is largely unknown. Potential detrimental effects of incorporating non-anthropogenic matter as nesting material include entanglement, ingestion, alteration of thermal properties, and increase in predation risk. The proportion of plastic used in robin (Turdus migratorius) nests was determined in 3 types of locations in Northwest Indiana. These sites included shopping area parking lots, Valparaiso University campus, and local parks. Post-breeding season robin …

How Dna Reveals God’S Design, Alan L. Gillen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Codes are big in today’s world: QR codes, barcodes, computer codes, cell phone codes, and more. Specific information is needed to identify, diagnose, and inform. DNA is the code for life: microbes, plants, parasites, animals, and man. DNA Day is April 25 because it was this day in history (April 25, 1953) when James Watson and Francis Crick described DNA as the double helix and the code for life. Although we consider DNA the genetic blueprint for life, it has only been known for 80 years. On February 1, 1944, Oswald Avery, Colin MacLeod, and Maclyn McCarty wrote a revolutionary …

Neural Activation Patterns During Socially Transmitted Aggression, Elana Qasem Apr 2024

Neural Activation Patterns During Socially Transmitted Aggression, Elana Qasem

2024

Children who experience abuse or witness it are at an elevated risk of becoming either victims themselves or engaging in violent behavior later in life, possibly due to the observed behavior of the abuser or the abused. However, socially transmitted aggression remains understudied due to the absence of a suitable behavioral paradigm. This study addresses this gap by introducing a novel social transmission paradigm combined with fiber photometry to explore the brain regions implicated in socially transmitted aggression in mice, given the conservation of their circuity and impact on aggressive behavior. This study addresses this gap by introducing a novel …

Phosphorus And Nitrogen-Containing Soybean Oil Polyols: Effect On The Mechanical Properties And Flame Retardancy Of Polyurethane Foam, Deni̇z Öztaşkin, Lütfullah Yusuf Yi̇vli̇k, İlayda Acaroğlu Degitz, Tarik Eren

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in producing new materials that use renewable resources and halogen-free flame retardants with nonleaching properties. This research focuses on designing and synthesizing phosphorus-nitrogen-based biopolyols for use in polyurethane (PU) foam production. Polyol (ESBO-DYM) with dual functionalities, renewability, and nonflammability is synthesized through the epoxy ring-opening reaction of epoxidized soybean oil with phosphorus and nitrogen-containing tetraol products (DYM). The mechanical and flame retardant properties of PU foams with the addition of an ESBO-DYM were investigated. Increasing the amount of phosphorus in the PU foams increased the thermal stability properties. Using 100% ESBO-DYM …

Preparation Of Cholesterol-Imprinted Polymer For Selective Adsorption Of Cholesterol From Gastrointestinal Mimicking Solution, Veyi̇s Karakoç, Erol Erçağ

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The purpose of this study is to synthesize a highly selective adsorbent to remove cholesterol, one of the most important causes of cardiovascular diseases, from the intestinal mimic solution (IMS). For this purpose, cholesterol imprinted polymers were synthesized by suspension polymerization method using the molecular imprinting technique. In the first step, the functional monomer MATyr with hydrophobic character was synthesized. Then, the cholesterol-MATyr monomer precomplex was formed and the polymerization process was carried out by adding cross-linkers with the comonomer HEMA. The synthesized polymer poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-N-methacryloyl-(L)-tyrosine methylester) poly(HEMA–MATyr) was characterized by FTIR and SEM. The cholesterol adsorbing behavior of the …

Humorous Takes On Marriage In The Uae, Doris Hambuch, Sarah Laura Nesti Willard, Urwa Tariq, Al Anood Alboainain

CoHSS Faculty Work

This article investigates humorous representations of marriage in digital comics, stand-up comedy and short films created by Emirati artists and content creators who primarily rely on social media as their most effective form of distribution. Studied against theories of humor in the Western and the Arabic traditions, selected examples demonstrate that the story-based genre appears less light-hearted in its combination of comic with tragic plot turns, while the snapshot characteristic of graphic art allows comics and social media skits to focus on the joke. The latter is thus more appealing to larger audiences, especially via electronic media. Depending on whether …

One-Time Broadscale Sctld Intervention Effectiveness On Montastraea Cavernosa In An Endemic Zone, Amanda Zummo

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Disease intervention using CoralCure with amoxicillin is effective at stopping stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) lesion progression, however, it does not provide protection against reinfection. Prolonging colony survival may require regular visits to treat new lesions should they appear. Intervention activities in southeast Florida were allocated between regular treatment and monitoring of selected priority colonies and broadscale disease interventions. The latter involved strike team divers, who worked in small groups to cover large areas of reef treating all SCTLD lesions observed, tagging the colonies, and recording their locations via a floating GPS. Broadscale disease intervention efforts aimed to maximize …

Euhaplorchis Sp. A Effect On Social Behavior And Familiarity Of Gulf Killifish (Fundulus Grandis), Hannah Bauman

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Trophically transmitted parasites may manipulate their hosts’ phenotype (e.g., behavior, physiology, morphology) to increase the likelihood of transmission to the definitive host. In fishes, stable social groups develop familiarity over time through repeated interactions among individuals, and social preferences are often developed due to familiarity. Consequently, fishes often shoal with familiar fishes, a behavior that is likely to be protective against predation. Parasites may alter fish social dynamics in two ways: by decreasing association with familiar individuals, thereby isolating infected fish and making them more susceptible to predation by definitive hosts; and/or by incentivizing uninfected individuals to avoid infected fish …

Writing, Performance, Resistance: Examining Feminist Ideology And Theory In Theatre Since The Second Wave, Olivia Cross

Theater Honors Papers

This project seeks to identify and analyze how feminist theatre is informed by theory and activism in its resistance against white, heteronormative, and patriarchal hegemony offstage through onstage representation. By identifying three consistent themes of gender & sexuality, race, and trauma and the methods used to effectively convey them to an audience, feminist theatre displays how advocacy takes unique forms to uproot the status quo. Furthermore, this research highlights how theatre is a viable and rich outlet for feminist intellectual history, displaying its versatility as a frame of analysis.
