Cannibals, Chemicals, And A Trip Down Memory Lane: Unraveling Our Understanding Of Memory, Yana Honcharuk

Scientific Kenyon: The Neuroscience Edition

Have you ever wished to preserve a memory forever? Or perhaps share a treasured memory with someone? Instead of having to look for words that could describe how you felt at the concert of your favorite band or at that first date with a person you’ve been pining for, wouldn’t it be nice to have the ability to transmit those experiences to your friends? To make them feel how you felt? While this sounds like a plot for another rendition of Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, or a chapter from Harry Potter, the scientific idea of memory transfer has …

Plastic Pollutants To The Brain: Wrong Kind Of Plastic For The Nervous System, Caleigh Wukitch May 2024

Plastic Pollutants To The Brain: Wrong Kind Of Plastic For The Nervous System, Caleigh Wukitch

Scientific Kenyon: The Neuroscience Edition

The plastic revolution is here: we store our food in plastic containers, walk around with our coffee in plastic cups, and sit all day in our plastic chairs. We also know that our plastic waste floats around poisoning waters, cluttering streets, and choking wildlife. But it may be doing so much more than we realize - what if it is rewiring our nervous system?

Molecular Mechanisms Of Opioid Use Disorder In Human Brain Models, Emily Mendez May 2024

Molecular Mechanisms Of Opioid Use Disorder In Human Brain Models, Emily Mendez

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a national and global public health crisis with no end in sight. While studies from animal models hint at widespread epigenetic and transcriptomic alterations of opioid drugs, the molecular consequences of long-term exposure to opioid drugs in human brain is still unclear, and human-centered translational models are necessary to discern the human cell type-specific effects of OUD.

Using postmortem brain Brodmann area 9 (BA9) from the UTHealth Brain Collection for Research on Psychiatric Disorders, I identified angiogenic gene networks perturbed in the RNA and protein of OUD subjects, as well as downregulation of many neuron-correlated …

Novel Roles Of Microtubule-Associated Tau In Radiation-Induced Brain Injury, Riya Thomas, Riya Thomas May 2024

Novel Roles Of Microtubule-Associated Tau In Radiation-Induced Brain Injury, Riya Thomas, Riya Thomas

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Injury responses in cells lacking proliferation capacity such as terminally differentiated neurons consists of complex mechanisms to ensure cellular homeostasis. Brain tumor patients undergoing radiation therapy experience cognitive impairments similar to those seen in patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. Despite the plethora of research into radiation effects on proliferating brain cells, the impact of radiation on differentiated, post-mitotic neurons, including their structural and functional alterations, remain largely elusive. However, microtubule-associated tau, an important partner of cytoskeletal structural stability emerges as a pivotal player in the radiation-induced neuronal injury response, demonstrating compartmentalized functions such as repair-centric mechanisms and synaptic homeostasis. This …

The Influence Of Environmental Conditions On Gordonia Terrae -Specific Bacteriophage Distribution And Diversity, Gt M. Moore

Biology Theses

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect a diverse range of bacteria, with certain strains serving medical and industrial significance. Actinobacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect Phylum Actinobacteria hosts including the environmentally abundant Gordonia terrae. Some species of Gordonia, including G. terrae, have also been isolated from human infections. The isolation and characterization of novel phages that can infect Gordonia can therefore be significant to both genomics and potential phage therapy. Actinobacteriophages that infect these bacteria have been isolated from soil environments, but optimal environmental parameters for isolation have not been fully evaluated. This study examined the relationships between environmental …

Theory Of Distances In Neutrogeometry, Erick González Caballero, Florentin Smarandache May 2024

Theory Of Distances In Neutrogeometry, Erick González Caballero, Florentin Smarandache

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

NeutroGeometry is one of the most recent approaches to geometry. In NeutroGeometry mod els, the main condition is to satisfy an axiom, definition, property, operator and so on, that is neither entirely true nor entirely false. When one of these concepts is not satisfied at all it is called AntiGeometry. One of the problems that this new theory has had is the scarcity of models. Another open problem is the definition of angle and distance measurements within the framework of NeutroGeometry. This paper aims to introduce a general theory of distance measures in any NeutroGeometry. We also present an algorithm …

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) lameness is the most critical animal health and welfare issue facing the broiler industry worldwide. It is estimated that 1 to 2% of bird condemnation at marketing age is caused by BCO lameness, resulting in tens of millions of dollars in annual losses. Fast-growing broilers are prone to mechanical stress that triggers bacterial translocation across epithelial barriers into the bloodstream, followed by bacterial colonization in the growth plate of long bones, and eventually, bone necrosis and lameness. Mycotoxins (MTX) are secondary metabolites produced naturally by microfungi, of which deoxynivalenol (DON …

Peninsula Medical School

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) plays an indispensable role in cellular processes, including maintenance of calcium homeostasis, and protein folding, synthesized and processing. Disruptions in these processes leading to ER stress and the accumulation of misfolded proteins can instigate the unfolded protein response (UPR), culminating in either restoration of balanced proteostasis or apoptosis. A key player in this intricate balance is CLCC1, an ER-resident chloride channel, whose essential role extends to retinal development, regulation of ER stress, and UPR. The importance of CLCC1 is further underscored by its interaction with proteins localized to mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs), where it participates …

Indoor Tent Management For Extending Honey Bee Research Season: Benefits And Caveats, Trevor Bawden, Adam G. Dolezal, Chelsea N. Cook

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Honey bees are important organisms for research in many fields, including physiology, behavior, and ecology. Honey bee colonies are relatively easy and affordable to procure, manage, and replace. However, some difficulties still exist in honey bee research, specifically that honey bee colonies have a distinct seasonality, especially in temperate regions. Honey bee colonies transition from a large society in which workers have a strict temporal division of labor in the summer, to a group of behaviorally flexible workers who manage the colony over winter. Furthermore, opening colonies or collecting bees when they are outside has the potential to harm the …
