The Impracticality Of Silk, Jo A. Reyes May 2024

The Impracticality Of Silk, Jo A. Reyes

Theses and Dissertations

In the impracticality of silk, the author examines and critiques the world through poetry and prose poetry, specifically addressing gender, sexuality, relationships, the borderlands, and canonized art as they view it to foment a new understanding and voice during a time of societal and personal shifts. Further complicating the author’s understanding are questions around desire both within reclaimed sensuality and within Audre Lorde’s larger understanding of desire as foundational and necessary in creation and liberation, and Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s use of autohistoria-teoria and her work within borderlands as ways toward reevaluating and reclaiming identity and place in the larger world. …

Bayesian Estimation Of Reproduction Numbers From Distributions Of Outbreaks Sizes: Branching Process Approach, Alberta Araba Johnson May 2024

Bayesian Estimation Of Reproduction Numbers From Distributions Of Outbreaks Sizes: Branching Process Approach, Alberta Araba Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The Generalized Poisson distribution is useful in modeling epidemiological processes as a branching stochastic processes problem. Our goal is to construct accurate and reliable estimators for the reproduction number (R0) (i.e., the number of secondary infections), particularly in the context of disease outbreaks modeled by a Galton-Watson process. Towards this goal, we construct the classical Bayes estimator, the Maximum Likelihood estimator, and the Empirical Bayes (EB) estimator under the Square Error Loss function in Chapter II. We prove that the Empirical Bayes estimator is asymptotically optimal and estimate the rate of convergence. We then proceed to monotonize the Empirical Bayes …

An Investigation Into The Enoughness Mindset, Ai Nhan Thi Ngo May 2024

An Investigation Into The Enoughness Mindset, Ai Nhan Thi Ngo

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of enoughness was an old but forgotten concept in human history. This research reintroduced the concept to our contemporary culture as a means to deal with consumers' endless desires by exploring the enoughness concept. Contemporarily suppressed under the development of modern capitalism, an extensive mythological trace of the enoughness concept showed its existence through more than 25 centuries across cultures with four key components: reining in desires, knowing contentment, knowing when to stop, and consideration of harmony. Building upon theories of desires, this research positioned enoughness as a means to help tame consumers' endless desires that can be …

Variational Bias Sampling For Collaborative Filtering Recommender Systems, Prisca Stephens May 2024

Variational Bias Sampling For Collaborative Filtering Recommender Systems, Prisca Stephens

Theses and Dissertations

Advancements in digitalization has yielded enormous growth of data on online platforms, overwhelming users with multitude of options to choose from. Recommender systems narrow down these options to a few relevant ones thereby facilitating the decision-making processes for users. This study presents a framework for integrating variational bias sampling into model-based collaborative filtering techniques for recommender systems. Variational bias sampling is a novel and unique way to account for random factors that affect explicit ratings in collaborative filtering recommender systems. A Gaussian distribution is used to model all the possible random factors that could affect ratings. Sampling user and item …

Soil Carbon Sequestration Efforts In Arid And Semi-Arid Climates Under Conservation Agriculture And Reforestation, Samantha Lynn Colunga May 2024

Soil Carbon Sequestration Efforts In Arid And Semi-Arid Climates Under Conservation Agriculture And Reforestation, Samantha Lynn Colunga

Theses and Dissertations

Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a vital role in the global carbon cycle and aids in climate change mitigation. However, deforestation and intensive agricultural practices threaten topsoil and carbon (C) pools through soil disturbances releasing vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) by enhancing the decomposition of organic materials. Degraded soils typically lack stable aggregates, nutrient and water retention, and overall low fertility. In arid and semi-arid regions, soils are in an even more dire situation, as low precipitation and high temperatures slow down the accumulation of SOC. This thesis has two objectives: 1) to evaluate whether conservation tillage practices increase …

Studies Of Novel And Well-Defined Dinickel Architectures Utilizing An N-Atom Bridge, David Anthony De Los Santos May 2024

Studies Of Novel And Well-Defined Dinickel Architectures Utilizing An N-Atom Bridge, David Anthony De Los Santos

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a growing interest in organometallic chemistry to utilize late Earth-abundant metals towards challenging molecular functionalization of abundant feedstocks to value-added products. There is precedent of utilizing cooperativity to try and address some of the shortcomings of traditional mononuclear complexes by integrating metal-metal and or metal-ligand cooperativity to facilitate multi-electron transformations. The utility of a redox-noninnocent scaffold allows for the metal centers to be stable over a range of oxidation states, using the ligand to store electrons. Despite recent progress, complexes harnessing cooperative states towards challenging transformations is still an emerging field. Our group has synthesized a multinucleating …

Pathology And Osteological Observations Of Early Pliocene Rhinoceros, Teleoceras Aepysoma (Perissodactyla, Rhinocerotidae) From Gray Fossil Site, Tennessee, Thomas Scaife

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rhinoceroses were an important part of North America’s Paleogene and Neogene ecosystems, with Teleoceras aepysoma being one of the last representatives of this family. Specimens of T. aepysoma from the Gray Fossil Site (GFS) possess distinct/peculiar pathologies: including a pair of fused ribs and ankylosed phalanges. A qualitative description of the pathologies in the GFS T. aepysoma, including new material, was conducted to accurately identify pathologies and make interpretations about the life history of the GFS rhinos. Analysis suggests that rheumatoid arthritis is common in the lower limb bones of GFS rhinos. Additionally, the rib and toe pathologies are more …

Perinatal Buprenorphine Effects On Offspring Growth, Opioid Withdrawal, And Brain Morphology In Rats, Parker Barnes May 2024

Perinatal Buprenorphine Effects On Offspring Growth, Opioid Withdrawal, And Brain Morphology In Rats, Parker Barnes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts 5.6 million people in the US. Buprenorphine (BUP) is a commonly prescribed opioid medication used to treat OUD, including in pregnant women. However, opioid use during pregnancy is associated with poorer infant outcomes including reduced fetal growth, neurodevelopmental deficits, and neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). Recent clinical data suggests that providing mothers with a lower dose of BUP may result in fewer negative outcomes in infants. Here, a preclinical rodent model of low-dose perinatal BUP exposure was used to study offspring health outcomes in the neonate, juvenile, and adolescent offspring. Dams were given clinically relevant …

Seeds In The City: Impacts Of Urbanization On Avian Seed Dispersal Networks In The Southern Appalachians, Jody Horton May 2024

Seeds In The City: Impacts Of Urbanization On Avian Seed Dispersal Networks In The Southern Appalachians, Jody Horton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urbanization is an intensive form of habitat disturbance associated with detrimental effects on biodiversity. However, few studies have investigated its effects on the number, identity and structure of species interactions while considering seasonal fluctuations in communities. Avian seed dispersal is a vital ecosystem service, and the interplay of urbanization and seasonality may impact seed dispersal in ways not predicted by either factor alone. In this study, we evaluate the effects of urbanization and season on avian seed dispersal networks in the southern Appalachians. We found that the number and richness of interactions was unaffected, but the identity of interacting bird …

Investigating Native Bamboo Practices For Reservoir Conservation And Habitat Restoration, Taryn Elizabeth Ann Bieri May 2024

Investigating Native Bamboo Practices For Reservoir Conservation And Habitat Restoration, Taryn Elizabeth Ann Bieri

Theses

Reservoirs are an important resource for both humans and wildlife. They provide drinking water, recreational opportunities, wildlife habitat and more. A major issue land managers face on reservoirs is shoreline erosion leading to water quality impairments, sedimentation, and habitat loss. Traditionally, riprap has been used to mitigate this issue, but is costly and has limited ability to provide habitat. A promising measure to mitigate shoreline erosion and provide habitat is the establishment of giant cane [Arundinaria gigantea (Walt.) Muhl], on shorelines. Giant cane, a bamboo species native to southern Illinois and the southeastern United States, forms monodominant stands called canebrakes. …

Inhibition Of Pro-Inflammatory Lipid Mediators By Yersinia Pestis., Amanda Brady May 2024

Inhibition Of Pro-Inflammatory Lipid Mediators By Yersinia Pestis., Amanda Brady

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis causes the human disease known as plague. A key manifestation of plague is a delayed inflammatory response. Because this delay in inflammation is required for virulence, I was interested in defining the molecular mechanisms used by Y. pestis to evade immune recognition. Eicosanoids are produced early during infection and necessary to initiate a rapid inflammatory response. Despite the importance of these lipids in mediating inflammation, the role of eicosanoids during plague has not been previously investigated. Using an intranasal mouse model infection, I determined the kinetics of eicosanoid synthesis during pneumonic plague. I further demonstrated that LTB4 …

The Impact Of Death Anxiety On Counselors’-In-Training Efficacy With Substance Use Populations, Jason Rose May 2024

The Impact Of Death Anxiety On Counselors’-In-Training Efficacy With Substance Use Populations, Jason Rose

Dissertations

Death anxiety has been an unremitting agent of the human experience. The psychological dilemma posed by the awareness and forecasting of death can increase anxiety, thus affecting well-being through the compulsive desire or will to persist (Becker, 1973; Yalom, 1980). Such psychological armor can manifest in conscious and unconscious behaviors, thoughts, and emotions to which persons utilize psychological, social, and cultural defenses to manage anxiety (Becker, 1973; Solomon et al., 2015). Across all levels of counseling, there has been a deficiency in awareness and discussion of death-related fears within the therapeutic process (Lacocque & Loeb, 1988). Therefore, due to the …

Exploring University Student Perceptions Of Climate Change Using Connection To Nature And Psychological Distance, Jessica Duke

Dissertations

The central goal of my dissertation is to better understand undergraduate biology students’ perceptions of climate change specifically using a localized lens. Research relating to climate change perceptions and understanding is common in the K-12 setting; however, there have been far fewer studies that use undergraduate student populations. Undergraduate students represent a new age of the voting populus and are therefore an important demographic to target for inducing environmental change. To foster climate change awareness, concern, and willingness to act in our undergraduate students, we must first understand how they perceive it. Using both quantitative and qualitative approaches I explored …

Oxidative Phosphorylation In Melanoma Brain Metastases: A Regulator Of The Tumor Immune Landscape, Renato A. Guerrieri May 2024

Oxidative Phosphorylation In Melanoma Brain Metastases: A Regulator Of The Tumor Immune Landscape, Renato A. Guerrieri

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Previously, we demonstrated via RNA-sequencing analysis of murine intracranial melanoma tumors that pharmacologic inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) results in increased expression of genes consistent with activated anti-tumor immune responses. The central hypothesis of this dissertation is that OXPHOS plays a critical role in the pathogenesis and immune regulation of melanoma brain metastases (MBMs).

The functional significance of OXPHOS was assessed through genetic inhibition, involving knockout (KO) of key regulatory genes such as Ppargc1a (PGC1a) and Ndfus4 (NDUFS4), a component of mitochondrial complex I. PGC1a KO in an RCAS-TVA mouse model of autochthonous lung and brain tumors developing from primary …

Seeking Steatite: Analyzing The Spatial Distribution Of Southern California Arrow Shaft Straighteners, Christina Angela Livingston

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Arrow shaft straighteners are ground stone tools used in the production of arrows. Over the years, before Spanish colonialism, California Natives formed arrow shaft straighteners using various types of stone, such as granite or basalt. My thesis will focus on the arrow shaft straighteners made out of steatite. Steatite, or soapstone, is a metamorphic rock that is smooth to the touch. The smoothness makes steatite very easy to carve and modify. In California, there are many main sources of steatite. For my thesis, I will focus only on four of these sources: Inyo County, Santa Catalina Island, Sierra Pelona, and …
