Alabaster Glory., Chloe Cheng
Alabaster Glory., Chloe Cheng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alabaster Glory includes three installations in the gallery space: 望(wàng), 盛(chéng), and 余(yú). These components represent three stages of human life: the beginning, living on this earth, and the end. The core concept behind the three stages is the relationship between the creator (God) and creations, referring to humans that live in this broken world containing suffering, chaos, crime, conflict, or the personal experience of an inner void.
Alabaster Glory invites viewers to walk through the space first to encounter a magnitude of infant heart forms placed by a window, which intends to evoke curiosity about their quantity and symbolism. …
Context Dependent Training Data Selection For Automatic Target Detection., Tylman Michael
Context Dependent Training Data Selection For Automatic Target Detection., Tylman Michael
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An Automatic Target Detection (ATD) algorithm is capable of identifying the location of targets of interest captured by Infra-Red imagery in vastly different contexts. ATD is often a precursor in a 2-stage methodology in order to ascertain the location and nature of a target in both military and civilian applications. In order to train an ATD algorithm, a large amount of data from varied sources is required. One drawback of this requirement is that some sources of data may harm the performance of the method in different contexts. This thesis explores utilizing an unsupervised method to identify a subset of …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive brain cancer. To model GBM in research, orthotopic brain tumor models, including syngeneic models like GL261 and genetically engineered mouse models like TRP, are used. In longitudinal studies, tumor growth and the treatment response are typically tracked with in vivo imaging, including bioluminescence imaging (BLI), which is quick, cost-effective, and easily quantifiable. However, BLI requires luciferase-tagged cells, and recent studies indicate that the luciferase gene can elicit an immune response, leading to tumor rejection and experimental variation. We sought to optimize the engraftment of two luciferase-expressing GBM models, GL261 Red-FLuc and TRP-mCherry-FLuc, showing differences …

The use of wetlands as a treatment approach for nitrogen in runoff is a common practice in agroecosystems. However, nitrate is not the sole constituent present in agricultural runoff and other biologically active contaminants have the potential to affect nitrate removal efficiency. In this study, the impacts of the combined effects of four common veterinary antibiotics (chlortetracycline, sulfamethazine, lincomycin, monensin) on nitrate-N treatment efficiency in saturated sediments and wetlands were evaluated in a coupled microcosm/mesocosm scale experiment. Veterinary antibiotics were hypothesized to significantly impact nitrogen speciation (e.g., nitrate and ammonium) and nitrogen uptake and transformation processes (e.g., plant uptake and …

“Criminalizing” Depositions In Arbitration, Mitch Zamoff
“Criminalizing” Depositions In Arbitration, Mitch Zamoff
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Civil litigation--style deposition practice is preventing commercial arbitration from reaching its full potential as an economical, efficient alternative to a civil lawsuit. Although there is consensus among alternative dispute resolution experts that meaningful limits must be imposed on arbitration discovery to unlock the efficiency benefits of arbitration, depositions continue to feature prominently in commercial arbitrations for at least three reasons. First, civil litigators are addicted to depositions. They reflexively propose overdone deposition practice in arbitrations that replicates their litigation experience. Second, arbitrators may hesitate to disallow deposition discovery out of fear that their awards will be vacated for failure to …

Growing butter markets, domestically and globally, provide opportunities for value-added variants of butter. Adding probiotics to butter could boosts its bioactivity; however, maintaining probiotic viability during storage is a major challenge. Mathematical analysis of probiotic population changes could help improve our understanding of how probiotics interact with butter and storage conditions. Two strains of probiotics in a 1:1 ratio as free cells or Whey Protein Hydrolysate–Maltodextrin (WPH-MD)-encapsulated cells, Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 (LA5) and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis ATCC 27536 (BB12), were separately mixed into butter at 1% levels. Using analysis of covariance, a mathematical evaluation for probiotic population changes …
Optimization Of Pre-Enrichment And Screening Methods For The Detection Of Salmonella Enterica In Meat Analog Products, Kylie Sacapano
Optimization Of Pre-Enrichment And Screening Methods For The Detection Of Salmonella Enterica In Meat Analog Products, Kylie Sacapano
Food Science (MS) Theses
With the growing demand and variety of meat analogs on the commercial market, there is a need to revisit the methodology for the detection of foodborne pathogens in these products. The current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory methods for Salmonella enterica detection in meat analogs follow the Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) and are time-consuming and costly, requiring pre-enrichment using lactose broth (LB) with a surfactant (e.g., Triton X-100). Therefore, this study aimed to optimize pre-enrichment and screening methods for the detection of Salmonella in meat analogs by comparing the current FDA reference methods to updated techniques. To achieve this, …
A Meta-Analysis Of Seafood Species Mislabeling Rates In The United States, Sarah Ahles
A Meta-Analysis Of Seafood Species Mislabeling Rates In The United States, Sarah Ahles
Food Science (MS) Theses
Seafood is vulnerable to species mislabeling due to factors such as complex global supply chains, varying prices, and similar appearance of species. Numerous studies have been published reporting a range of mislabeling rates for various forms of seafood. However, these studies oftentimes focus on lesser-consumed species that are vulnerable to species mislabeling. As a result, the overall mislabeling rate of commercially sold seafood in the U.S. remains unknown, especially for the most consumed species. Thus, the objective of the current study was to compile the results of seafood mislabeling studies into a single resource to provide informative statistics on U.S. …
Changes In Soil Chemical Attributes, Horticultural Performance And Fruit Yield Of Peach Cultivars Following Preplant And Annual Applications Of Composted Mulch Amendments, Jeffrey Hopkins

Southeastern peach orchards often have poor soil quality due to native soil composition, intensive farming practices and generational replanting of trees in the same locations. This study investigated using mulch amendments to improve the chemical and physical quality of soil prior to planting a new peach orchard. At the beginning of the four-year study, a single-ground municipal composted mulch was incorporated into the soil at two different rates and three cultivars of peaches, ‘Rubyprince’, ‘Julyprince’, and ‘BigRed’ were planted on berms. Thereafter, the same mulch product was annually applied to the top of the berms at two different rates to …
Nutrigenetic And Dietary Factors Impacting The Relationship Between Linoleic Acid And Apolipoprotein B, Gregory Nacarelli
Nutrigenetic And Dietary Factors Impacting The Relationship Between Linoleic Acid And Apolipoprotein B, Gregory Nacarelli
All Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the relationship between the omega-6 fatty acid, linoleic acid (LA), and the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk marker apolipoprotein B (apoB). ApoB is considered to be the most important causal marker of CVD. However, the impact of LA on CVD risk has been subject to debate within the scientific literature, with various studies showing LA can decrease or increase apoB concentrations. To foster more clarity regarding this relationship, we first investigated all dietary, macronutrient, micronutrient, and nutrigenetic factors that impact concentrations of apolipoproteins via a narrative analysis approach. We found that more Westernized diets containing more processed foods, …

Fine-Grained Address Space Layout Randomization Through Non-Contiguous Per-Function Memory Segment Assignment, Andrew Kramer
Fine-Grained Address Space Layout Randomization Through Non-Contiguous Per-Function Memory Segment Assignment, Andrew Kramer
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) is a popular exploit mitigation provided by most modern operating systems today. ASLR works by randomizing the base address of position-independent code and data segments loaded in memory at run-time in order to make it more difficult for an attacker to guess their locations.
This design choice makes ASLR fast and efficient, but suffers from a major flaw: If an attacker is able to leak any pointer to the randomized memory mapping, they can easily calculate the corresponding base address, and in turn calculate the address of any other code or data in that segment, …

Increasing rates of high-severity wildfires threaten the existence of giant sequoia trees, as well as the reservation and sacred cultural sites of the Tule River Indian Tribe. Decades of fire suppression have created a ticking time bomb across millions of acres of land. The result: the last two fire seasons alone wiped out nearly 20% of all giant sequoias on the planet and burned thousands of acres of forests across the Tribe’s land. This Article explores the ecological background and significance of the giant sequoias and their relationship to the Tribe. It then examines the existing legal framework for sequoia …
The Pam-1 Aminopeptidase Protects Against Neurodegeneration In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Caleb Coil
The Pam-1 Aminopeptidase Protects Against Neurodegeneration In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Caleb Coil
Honors College Theses
The deteriorating effects of neurodegenerative conditions seem inescapable for many as they age. The experimental exploration of the molecular and cellular mechanisms responsible for neurodegeneration is aided using animal models. For instance, genetic screens have identified the puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase (PSA) as a novel effector of neurodegeneration, as mutations in PSA in fruit flies result in perturbations of neuron anatomy and an accelerated onset of neuron death. We have tested the hypothesis that PAM-1, the Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog of PSA, plays a similar role in governing neurodegeneration in nematodes. Genetic strains were created that express the green fluorescent protein (GFP) in …

Large-scale disturbances, such as megafires, motivate restoration at equally large extents. Measuring the survival and growth of individual plants plays a key role in current efforts to monitor restoration success. However, the scale of modern restoration (e.g., >10,000 ha) challenges measurements of demographic rates with field data. In this study, we demonstrate how unoccupied aerial system (UAS) flights can provide an efficient solution to the tradeoff of precision and spatial extent in detecting demographic rates from the air. We flew two, sequential UAS flights at two sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) common gardens to measure the survival and growth of …

Educational Influences On Environmental Perception: A Semester Analysis Of The New Ecological Paradigm Scale In Undergraduates, Zoe Zingler
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
This study evaluated the impact of a geography course, GEOG 181: Global Environmental Issues, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on students’ endorsement of the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) using a pre-course and post-course NEP scale survey. Analyzing paired responses (n = 40) through t-tests and z-scores, only four of 15 statements had statistically significant shifts observed for the entire sample. However, a targeted analysis of students initially possessing lower endorsement of the NEP—early deniers—revealed significant paradigm shifts post-course. While women initially showed stronger NEP endorsement, men demonstrated notable changes following the course towards endorsement of the NEP. Academic majors, whether …
