Let’S Get Creative: Using Creative Arts Interventions To Address Trauma Experiences, Ashley Oginz-Wilson May 2024

Let’S Get Creative: Using Creative Arts Interventions To Address Trauma Experiences, Ashley Oginz-Wilson

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Trauma as a theme in counseling work is something that mental health clinicians are commonly exposed to. While there are standard practices and therapeutic modalities to address trauma in counseling, it is important to maintain flexibility as a clinician to best meet the individual needs of the client. This literature review explores ways to embrace creative counseling interventions in support of clients with trauma experiences. Creative counseling interventions could include art, music, dance and movement, nature, humor, drama, and play. The premise of such interventions is that they offer clients a new way to express their feelings, memories, stories, etc. …

Studying Ketocarotenoid Metabolism In Cell Culture, Amir Hosein Sanjari Nia May 2024

Studying Ketocarotenoid Metabolism In Cell Culture, Amir Hosein Sanjari Nia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines the conversion of carotenoids to ketocarotenoids, essential for bright plumage in birds, a trait crucial in sexual selection. We used DF-1 avian cells genetically engineered to express BDH1L, CYP2J19, and TTC39B, key enzymes in this conversion. The genetic modifications and enzyme activity were verified via PCR genotyping and RT-qPCR. These cells were treated with yellow carotenoids (zeaxanthin, β-carotene, lutein) and their conversion to red ketocarotenoids (astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, alpha-doradexanthin) was analyzed using High- Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The study also assessed the impact of antioxidant treatments and mitochondrial uncouplers on this process. Results indicated that the inclusion of …

Vascular Electrophysiology And Pathogenic Consequences Of Cardiovascular Katp Channel Mutations, Alex Hanson May 2024

Vascular Electrophysiology And Pathogenic Consequences Of Cardiovascular Katp Channel Mutations, Alex Hanson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The complex cardiovascular disorder Cantú Syndrome (CS) arises from gain-of-function (GoF) mutations in either KCNJ8 or ABCC9, the genes encoding the Kir6.1 and SUR2 subunits of cardiovascular ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels, respectively. CS involves an array of cardiovascular pathologies, including cardiac hypertrophy and hypercontractility, low systemic vascular resistance, and excessively compliant, dilated, and tortuous vessels. Together, the latter features exemplify the hypomyotonic and hyperelastic components of CS vasculopathy. It was recently established that CS vasculopathy drives the associated cardiac pathologies, which are observed even in the absence of cardiac KATP GoF. In this thesis, I carried out experiments to determine …

Identification, Establishment Of Connection, And Clustering Of Social Risks Involved In The Agri-Food Supply Chains: A Cross-Country Comparative Study, Guoqing Zhao, Shaofeng Liu, Carmen Lopez, Yi Wang, Haiyan Lu, Jinhua Zhang

Plymouth Business School

Supply chain risk management (SCRM) literature is heterogeneous. While much attention has been given to the economic and environmental dimensions, the social dimension has so far received less focus. Thus, this study analyzes the social risks involved in the agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) of Argentina and China by employing an integrated approach. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data, followed by using a combination of three complementary data analysis methods: thematic analysis to identify social risks, total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) to build interrelationships among the identified social risks, and fuzzy MICMAC (cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification analysis) to …

Social Environment-Based Opportunity Costs Dictate When People Leave Social Interactions, Anthony S. Gabay, Andrea Pisauro, Kathryn C. O’Nell, Matthew A. J. Apps

School of Psychology

There is an ever-increasing understanding of the cognitive mechanisms underlying how we process others' behaviours during social interactions. However, little is known about how people decide when to leave an interaction. Are these decisions shaped by alternatives in the environment - the opportunity-costs of connecting to other people? Here, participants chose when to leave partners who treated them with varying degrees of fairness, and connect to others, in social environments with different opportunity-costs. Across four studies we find people leave partners more quickly when opportunity-costs are high, both the average fairness of people in the environment and the effort required …

Navigating The Relationships Among Food Waste Practices, Environmental Intentions, And Sustainability Knowledge Of Students, Merri Claire Minshew May 2024

Navigating The Relationships Among Food Waste Practices, Environmental Intentions, And Sustainability Knowledge Of Students, Merri Claire Minshew

Honors College Theses

Colleges and university campuses are among the greatest food wasters in the US due to combined over production and plate waste from consumers. While some schools have developed programs aimed at reducing and sustainably managing food waste, much of it ends up in landfills and produces greenhouse gas emissions. The overall goal of the research was to collect a comprehensive data set on university students’ food waste practices and behavior, environmental and sustainability knowledge, and environmental intentions. For probing relationships among these drivers, a structural equation model and student survey was developed. The survey of 37 questions was collected on …

Madre Tierra: Black Women And Environmental (In)Justice On The Pacific Coast Of Colombia, Kache Claytor May 2024

Madre Tierra: Black Women And Environmental (In)Justice On The Pacific Coast Of Colombia, Kache Claytor

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation tracks the stories of Black Colombian women, mothers, and children in relation to mining, and especially illegal mining, to highlight the intersections of gender, class, race, space, and time amid (un)natural environmental catastrophes in contemporary Colombia. Black Colombians have an interdependent relationship with the earth and also have rights to ancestral lands, territories, and natural resources according to Law 70 of 1993, which established collective rights for Black communities. The failure to recognize this has led to increased forced internal migration and expropriation in Black territories because of illegal mining. Nevertheless, in this dissertation, I spotlight how Black …

Inducible Crispr-Targeted ‘Knockdown’ Of Human Gut Bacteroides In Mice Reveals Glycan Utilization Strategies, Zachary Beller May 2024

Inducible Crispr-Targeted ‘Knockdown’ Of Human Gut Bacteroides In Mice Reveals Glycan Utilization Strategies, Zachary Beller

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Learning how members of the human gut microbiota compete and cooperate for dietary nutrients, such as fiber-associated glycans, should help facilitate development of more precise nutritional recommendations for improving health. To model how bacteria prioritize the utilization of different fiber glycans in the mammalian gut, germ-free mice were colonized with a 13-member consortium of cultured, genome-sequenced human bacterial strains, including seven Bacteroides species. Animals were fed a Western diet supplemented with pea fiber. Once the consortium had time to assemble, an inducible CRISPR-based system was used to deplete the absolute abundance of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron or B. cellulosilyticus by 10- to …

Environmental air irritants including nanosized carbon black (nCB) can drive systemic inflammation, promoting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema development. The let-7 microRNA (Mirlet7 miRNA) family is associated with IL-17-driven T cell inflammation, a canonical signature of lung inflammation. Recent evidence suggests the Mirlet7 family is downregulated in patients with COPD, however, whether this repression conveys a functional consequence on emphysema pathology has not been elucidated. Here, we show that overall expression of the Mirlet7 clusters, Mirlet7b/Mirlet7c2 and Mirlet7a1/Mirlet7f1/Mirlet7d, are reduced in the lungs and T cells of smokers with emphysema as well as in mice with …

Newborn mammalian cardiomyocytes quickly transition from a fetal to an adult phenotype that utilizes mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation but loses mitotic capacity. We tested whether forced reversal of adult cardiomyocytes back to a fetal glycolytic phenotype would restore proliferative capacity. We deleted Uqcrfs1 (mitochondrial Rieske iron-sulfur protein, RISP) in hearts of adult mice. As RISP protein decreased, heart mitochondrial function declined, and glucose utilization increased. Simultaneously, the hearts underwent hyperplastic remodeling during which cardiomyocyte number doubled without cellular hypertrophy. Cellular energy supply was preserved, AMPK activation was absent, and mTOR activation was evident. In ischemic hearts with RISP deletion, new cardiomyocytes …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), continues to be a major public health problem worldwide. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is another equally important life-threatening pathogen. HIV infection decreases CD4+ T cell levels markedly increasing Mtb co-infections. An appropriate animal model for HIV/Mtb co-infection that can recapitulate the diversity of the immune response in humans during co-infection would facilitate basic and translational research in HIV/Mtb infections. Herein, we describe a novel humanized mouse model. Methods: The irradiated NSG-SGM3 mice were transplanted with human CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells, and the humanization was monitored by staining various immune cell markers …

Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) are key players in intestinal homeostasis. ER stress is linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Here, we used cell culture, mouse models, and human specimens to determine whether ER stress in ILC3s affects IBD pathophysiology. We show that mouse intestinal ILC3s exhibited a 24-hour rhythmic expression pattern of the master ER stress response regulator inositol-requiring kinase 1α/X-box-binding protein 1 (IRE1α/XBP1). Proinflammatory cytokine IL-23 selectively stimulated IRE1α/XBP1 in mouse ILC3s through mitochondrial ROS (mtROS). IRE1α/XBP1 was activated in ILC3s from mice exposed to experimental colitis and in inflamed human IBD specimens. Mice with Ire1α deletion …

Pyogenic Tenosynovitis Of Tibialis Anterior Tendon After Cat Bite, Daniel Blascak, David Sosnoski, Aaron Seidman

Posters

Pyogenic tenosynovitis is a bacterial infection of the synovial sheath that surrounds a tendon.

Commonly occurs within flexor tendons of the hand; theoretically can occur within any sheathed tendon.

Delayed diagnosis may lead to spread of infection to surrounding tissues and tendon rupture.

Tibialis anterior tendon is encased in a synovial sheath that runs from above the superior extensor retinaculum to the talonavicular joint.

Only five cases of pyogenic tenosynovitis of the tibialis anterior tendon have been reported in the literature.

None of the reported cases were due to animal bite injury.

Can Chatgpt Keep A Secret? An Evaluation Of The Applicability And Suitability Of Trade Secrecy Protection For Ai-Generated Inventions, Gina Campanelli

Duke Law & Technology Review

The rising popularity of generative artificial intelligence has sparked questions around whether AI-generated inventions and works can be protected under current intellectual property regimes, and if so, how. Guidance from the U.S. Copyright Office and recent court cases shed some light on the applicability of copyright and patent protection to AI-generated products; namely “authors” and “inventors” are limited to natural persons. But further developments in copyright and patent law are still lagging behind generative-AI’s rapid growth. Trade secrecy emerges as the most viable path forward to protect AI-generated works and inventions because ownership of trade secrets is not limited to …

Activation Of Interleukin 33-Nfκb Axis In Granulosa Cells During Atresia And Its Role In Disposal Of Atretic Follicles, Jean Wu, Colin Carlock, Kiana Tatum, Junbo Shim, Cindy Zhou, Yahuan Lou

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

It has been previously shown that the cytokine interleukin 33 is required for two processes, i.e., autophagic digestion of granulosa cells and recruitment of macrophages into atretic follicles, for full disposal of atretic follicles. Now, this study shows that activation of interleukin 33-suppression of tumorigenicity 2-Nuclear Factor ĸB (NFκB) axis in granulosa in early atretic follicles may regulate those two events. Injection of human chorionic gonadotropin has been shown to induce a transient peak of interleukin 33 expression with synchronized atresia. In this model, interleukin 33-independent expression of suppression of tumorigenicity 2 in granulosa cells was detected in early atretic …

Characterizing The Expression Of The Sphingosine 1-Phosphate Pathway In Injury And Post-Traumatic Fibrosis, Nicole Cubbage May 2024

Characterizing The Expression Of The Sphingosine 1-Phosphate Pathway In Injury And Post-Traumatic Fibrosis, Nicole Cubbage

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Following injury, tissue repair allows for the restoration of the architecture and function of the injured tissue, while tissue replacement is characterized by severely damaged or non-regenerable tissue that is repaired by the laying down of extensive connective tissue, also known as fibrosis. The fibrotic process should be arrested at its early stage to have the greatest impact on preventing or reversing associate sequelae and promoting the regeneration of normal tissue. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a metabolic product of cell membrane sphingolipids, has emerged as a pathway that may be involved in fibrosis. Most of S1P’s actions are mediated through the …

Unpacking My Dreadlocks: My Hair Matters Depending On Where I Go, Tia Jones May 2024

Unpacking My Dreadlocks: My Hair Matters Depending On Where I Go, Tia Jones

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Deliberation of the natural hair movement continues to be an evolving and ever-changing series of expressions and identity. Black folks represent and make sense of their hair by maintaining the standard to upkeep hair textures, sizes, styles, shapes, and colors, to develop social markers about their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and age. In this way, hair serves as an integral part of one’s identity, especially providing an opportunity to embrace one’s culture while promoting self-expression. This study seeks to answer the overarching question: “How is Black hair, specifically dreadlocks, portrayed to a non-West-Indian society and what is its connection to …

Assessing Structural Variation In And Out Of The Classroom: Characterizing Structural Variation Within Campanula Americana And Effects Of Long Read Sequencing On Students Learning, Tyler Gandee

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Cytonuclear incompatibilities are proposed to be one of the first genetic barriers to arise during speciation, so understanding the underlying evolutionary forces that contribute to cytonuclear incompatibilities is important. Many studies have looked at SNP level variation in the plastid genome and its relationship with cytonuclear incompatibility, but no studies have examined structural variation and its relationship to cytonuclear incompatibility, particularly at the early stages of speciation, i.e. within species. Campanula americana is a great system for this because it exhibits cytonuclear incompatibility and the family in which it is found, the Campanulaceae, exhibits rapidly evolving plastid genomes, including …
