Reverse Genetics Of Murine Rotavirus: A Comparative Analysis Of The Wild-Type And Cell-Culture-Adapted Murine Rotavirus Vp4 In Replication And Virulence In Neonatal Mice, Takahiro Kawagishi, Liliana Sánchez-Tacuba, Ningguo Feng, Harry B Greenberg, Siyuan Ding
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Small-animal models and reverse genetics systems are powerful tools for investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying viral replication, virulence, and interaction with the host immune response in vivo. Rotavirus (RV) causes acute gastroenteritis in many young animals and infants worldwide. Murine RV replicates efficiently in the intestines of inoculated suckling pups, causing diarrhea, and spreads efficiently to uninoculated littermates. Because RVs derived from human and other non-mouse animal species do not replicate efficiently in mice, murine RVs are uniquely useful in probing the viral and host determinants of efficient replication and pathogenesis in a species-matched mouse model. Previously, we established an …

Closing The Gap: Methodological Consideration In Predicting Suitable Habitat For Ouachita Fanshell (Cyprogenia Sp Cf Aberti) With Documentation Of Mussel Communities In Small Tributaries In The Ouachita River Watershed, Seth Drake
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled taxonomic groups in the world, consequently, much effort is being expended to document the distribution of many mussel species. One tool that can aid in characterizing mussel distributions are species distribution models (SDM). I conducted two studies pertaining to freshwater mussel distributions: (1) utilize Maximum Entropy (MAXENT) modeling to predict potential areas of suitable habitat for the threatened Ouachita Fanshell (Cyprogenia sp cf aberti), and (2) survey small tributaries of the Ouachita River watershed to fill a portion of the information gap surrounding mussel communities in under-surveyed streams. Through changing …

Federal Government: Assessing The Impact Of Lithium Mineral Resource Extraction On Indigenous Communities In The State Of Nevada, Zachary Johnigan
Student Research
The research topic for this project is lithium mining which holds significance to indigenous populations in the State of Nevada and mineral extraction companies seeking to mine there. My research objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the direct impacts that lithium mining has had on indigenous communities, throughout history and today. Overall, the purpose of the project is to expound upon the implications of lithium mining on indigenous communities in response to the recent higher demand for the critical mineral in the United States. If it can be understood exactly how lithium mining has affected Nevada’s indigenous population, …
Entanglement With Neutral Atoms In The Simulation Of Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of One-Dimensional Spin Models, Anupam Mitra
Entanglement With Neutral Atoms In The Simulation Of Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of One-Dimensional Spin Models, Anupam Mitra
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Quantum entanglement is a key ingredient for quantum information processing with capabilities beyond that of classical computation. We study the generation and role of entanglement in the dynamics of spin-1/2 models, both for the design of quantum gates for general-purpose quantum computation and for quantum simulation of interacting spin models. We introduce the neutral atom Mølmer-Sørensen gate, involving rapid adiabatic Rydberg dressing interleaved in a spin-echo sequence. We show its robustness to quasi-static experimental imperfections and favorable scaling with the time-energy scales of Rydberg-mediated entanglement generation. In quantum simulation, we consider critical behavior in quench dynamics of transverse field Ising …

Bioplastics are considered sustainable alternatives to conventional microplastics which are recognized as a threat to terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about the potential ecotoxicological effects of bioplastics on soil fauna and ecosystems. The present study assessed the toxicity of microplastics [Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene (PE)] and bioplastics [Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Sodium polyacrylate (NaPa) on a key soil fauna Oppia nitens, a soil oribatid mite, and investigated the ecological relevance of O. nitens avoidance response as a valuable tool for the risk assessment of contaminated soils such as the Superfund sites. Findings showed that the mites’ net response indicated avoidance …
The Tissue-Specific Role Of Smn-1 In C. Elegans, Lindsey Philips
The Tissue-Specific Role Of Smn-1 In C. Elegans, Lindsey Philips
Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disease that results from mutations in the Survival Motor Neuron (SMN-1) gene. Although SMN is a ubiquitously expressed protein that acts as an RNA-binding protein (RBP), SMA is characterized by the selective degeneration of motor neurons of the lower spinal cord. Despite a clear understanding of the genetic causes underlying SMA, the mechanisms associated with low SMN levels to disease pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we investigate the role SMN-1 has in different tissues to begin understanding possible mechanisms. This project has three aims that has guided our experiments. The first aim is …

Unveiling The Nexus Of Cellular Quality Control: Exploring The Interplay Between Ribosome-Associated Protein Quality Control And Mitochondrial Quality Control Pathways, Foozhan Tahmasebinia
Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations
In eukaryotic cells, the intricate interplay between cellular quality control mechanisms is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and safeguarding the integrity of vital processes, spanning from macromolecule synthesis to the renewal of entire cellular organelles.
Disruption of these networks can lead to severe diseases such as metabolic disorders, underscoring the interconnected nature and feedback control mechanisms inherent in biological systems, including cellular quality control systems. This interconnectedness extends to the intricate communication between organelles, enabling coordinated functioning and adaptation to changing cellular conditions, particularly in response to stressors.
While the exact mechanisms governing these communications within cellular quality control systems remain …

Variability In Large Mammal Activity Patterns When Visiting Water In New Mexico, Juan E. Camacho
Variability In Large Mammal Activity Patterns When Visiting Water In New Mexico, Juan E. Camacho
Biology ETDs
Studying activity patterns of animals can provide vital information about how different species react to environmental changes, yet camera trap studies typically neglect the temporal aspect of the data. Using a 10-year camera trap dataset on Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, NM, we explored daily activity patterns when visiting water of five large mammal species. The species of study were mule deer, pronghorn, elk, oryx, and coyote. All species showed significant variability in activity patterns from site to site across the refuge. Within a site, differences in activity across years and seasons were less pronounced. Mule deer and coyote showed very …

Statement of the Question/Problem
The United Methodist Church is facing a season of incredible struggle. The modern American United Methodist Church is facing a crisis of Division during this season of disaffiliation and restructuring. Division within church is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it is not new in the Methodist tradition. This repeating cycle of denominational fracture begs the question, “why does division in the church happen, and how can we avoid it in the future?” Currently the United Methodist Church is dividing supposedly over the issue of human sexuality. I would argue these divisions do not solely rely …
A Genetic Screen To Identify Cell-Specific Inhibitors Of Microexon Splicing In The Unc-13 Transcript In C. Elegans, Saad Ali
Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Microexons, which are unusually short (<31 nucleotides) exons, have recently emerged as highly conserved features of genes expressed in the nervous system. Generally, microexons have been thought to be included (spliced in) in neuronal cells and skipped (spliced out) in non-neuronal cells. However, in our lab, we have discovered that certain microexons are included in certain neuronal cells but skipped in other neuronal cells, which reveals more complexity to microexon regulation. Therefore, I performed a forward mutagenesis screen that takes advantage of a bicolor splicing reporter in the unc-13 gene expressed in olfactory neurons to discover regulatory effects by which microexons can be skipped in specific neuron types.

The Metaphor of Ekphrasis:
or Why does your Ekphrasis look different from mine?
Ekphrasis is the ultimate extrapolation of symbols and metaphors. It is a set of words purported to describe a physical object that carries its own symbolism and, sometimes, portrays allusions to other narratives. Like the idea of a sign, words represent ekphrasis but, like a metaphor, ekphrasis represents something other than itself. This paper illustrates how a narrative description of an object can be filled with emotion and imagery, while being interpreted in distinctly diverse ways by individuals reading …
Old Wives’ Tales: Collections From Beneath The Floorboards, Layla Barnes
Old Wives’ Tales: Collections From Beneath The Floorboards, Layla Barnes
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Old Wives’ Tales: Collections from Beneath the Floorboards draws on the rich tradition of feminist speculative fiction, particularly in the genre of the fairy tale. It responds to Walidah Imarisha’s idea of “visionary fiction,” a kind of fiction which seeks to participate in “the decolonization of the imagination.” Using an experimental fragmentary form, it explores themes of story and counter-story, maternal legacy, female interconnectedness and community, and magic as a form of female empowerment in opposition to patriarchal control and surveillance.

Texas Gothic, Taryn Uribe Turner
Texas Gothic, Taryn Uribe Turner
Art Theses and Dissertations
The emotional and the ecological combine to create my body of work titled, “Texas Gothic.” My thesis tells the stories of my oil paintings created through personal connections to a variety of landscapes, animals and experiences that share the setting of Texas.
Desire and regret take shape as animals and figures not fully formed or real. Unreliable narratives of the past are entangled with present tensions to create a painting that haunts and stalks.
And yet, there is hope!
Through nostalgia and sweetness and burdens, my paintings confront a shrouded future. The contradictions of time passing are explored in my …

Neuro-Symbolic Commonsense Reasoning With Resistance To Data Poisoning: A First-Order Logic And Sub-Symbolic Embeddings Framework, Bryce Shurts, King-Ip Lin
Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Commonsense reasoning has long presented a hurdle between conversational agents and their ability to naturally engage with humans in conversation, as the infinitely dimensional nature of a dialogue’s topics presents a significant reasoning challenge in the study of Natural Language Understanding (NLU). Such a system must conceivably be able to act as a generalizable system for evaluating and reasoning about commonsense statements, problems, and queries: in this way, the agent can attempt to quantify the reasonability of a given input. We attempt to address this through the integration of an explainable neuro-symbolic system that leverages Logical Tensor Networks (LTNs) and …

The Lipid-Heart Hypothesis And The Keys Equation Defined The Dietary Guidelines But Ignored The Impact Of Trans-Fat And High Linoleic Acid Consumption, Mary T. Newport, Fabian M. Dayrit
Chemistry Faculty Publications
In response to a perceived epidemic of coronary heart disease, Ancel Keys introduced the lipid-heart hypothesis in 1953 which asserted that high intakes of total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol lead to atherosclerosis and that consuming less fat and cholesterol, and replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat, would reduce serum cholesterol and consequently the risk of heart disease. Keys proposed an equation that would predict the concentration of serum cholesterol (ΔChol.) from the consumption of saturated fat (ΔS), polyunsaturated fat (ΔP), and cholesterol (ΔZ): ΔChol. = 1.2(2ΔS - ΔP) + 1.5ΔZ. However, the Keys equation conflated natural saturated fat and …

Can Vice Make Us Virtuous? The Effects Of Greed Reminders On Charitability, Hayley Pitts
Honors Theses
Historically, society wishes to encourage people to be good – but also warns against being bad. There is little comparison between the two of which works: the threat of damnation through vice, or the promise of salvation through virtue. This study examines how each of these affect donation behavior. There are two studies within the present research, each with 149 participants randomly assigned into three categories: control, vice, and virtue. Participants were distracted then asked to view an image based on their randomly assigned category, followed by a donation question: would participants donate a $1.00 bonus to a local charity, …

As Bonecas Babadeiras: Drag Subculture And Global Media In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Logan Baggett
Honors Theses
21st century global queer culture is seeing a major boom. Drag queens are the most indicative symbols of this boom, traditional practitioners of gender-bending performances that blend music, dance, makeup, and fashion to create breathtaking performances. To this end, this thesis asks the following question: How is local drag performance culture generated in Rio de Janeiro in the context of this 21st century gay boom? In this global metropolis, drag queens confront challenges––racism, classism, sprawling urban geography, and scene competition––that color their interpersonal relationships and financial success. They also find community, creating family units in the absence of heteronormative power …

My project is decolonial, exploring how colonization applies to non-human animals. Engaging animal philosophy, philosophy of culinary authenticity, and philosophy of race, I will create vegan cooking tutorials aimed at communities of color. While there is significant literature exploring ourselves as primarily bodily beings before being individuals with personhood, it is often situated in an ecofeminist lens. My contribution builds on existing efforts to reveal the implicit bias within veganism and work to counteract it by applying how colonization of non-human animals and people can be resisted through cooking. A goal of this community engagement project is reducing environmental injustice …

In 2020, the United States experienced a global pandemic and the murder of Mr. George Floyd. With the murder of Floyd, many churches were confronted with the racial divide in the United States. This thesis is a response of one community, the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Plano, Texas. Using the folk song of Black Americans, namely the Negro Spirituals, as the foundation of an ethical-theological framework, this thesis poses one way for addressing the anti-Black structure prevalent in the Catholic Church in the United States of America. This work progresses from despair to hope, addressing the link between …
An Evaluation Of Rate Calculations During Extinction, Madison Holland
An Evaluation Of Rate Calculations During Extinction, Madison Holland
Thesis Projects
In practice, extinction is implemented to reduce a problem behavior by terminating reinforcement. It has historically been calculated by dividing the frequency of responses in a session by the total duration of the session. When calculated this way, the data appear as a sharp increasing trend before a downward trend begins. This is referred to as an extinction burst and is often expected to decrease with consistent implementation by practitioners who say, “It must get worse before it gets better”. The motivating operation to respond would be low for a participant who is currently receiving reinforcement. Due to this reasoning, …
