The Effects Of Classification Versus Observation During Category Learning, Enoch Sarakpo May 2024

The Effects Of Classification Versus Observation During Category Learning, Enoch Sarakpo

Theses - ALL

We report a category-learning experiment that examines the learning outcomes of classification and observational training methods across three category structures. Thus, we crossed training (classification vs. observation) and category type (natural vs. featural vs. relational). Some subjects classified the stimuli (side-by-side bird pairs) and received corrective feedback after each response, whereas others studied these stimuli, wherein they were presented with the corresponding category label. The posttest was an endorsement task made up of repeated and novel items. We did find an observation training advantage, as subjects in the observation training were better in the natural and relational categories for the …

Black Walnut Tree Health Distribution In An Urban Landscape, Gabriel Smith May 2024

Black Walnut Tree Health Distribution In An Urban Landscape, Gabriel Smith

Theses - ALL

Food access and climate change are two of the greatest challenges facing an increasingly urbanized society. Within cities, trees play a critical role for people and the planet, providing solutions to food insecurity and closing the metabolic rift. Trees provide food for human and non-human communities, shelter for biodiversity, and microclimate regulation. In this context, the health of trees is paramount because of the connection between species health and the capacity to provide services. Eastern black walnut (BW) trees (Juglans nigra) are an important and underutilized native nut tree in the Northeastern US. The kernel has the highest protein content …

Frightened Birds: An Exploration Of Insecurity And Its Artistic Expression, Chenyu Wang May 2024

Frightened Birds: An Exploration Of Insecurity And Its Artistic Expression, Chenyu Wang

Theses - ALL

This thesis aims to examine the root causes of human insecurity and to explore how to live with insecurity, both theoretically and visually. The nature of insecurity is further explored by analyzing it in a philosophical sense and making an analogy with Albert Camus’ understanding of “absurdity.” As a universal feeling, insecurity has enormous potential to be explored as an artistic topic. Creating and thinking from this feeling can trigger the audience’s emotional resonance and inspire more thinking in response. Insecurity is about meaning, about human longing and expectation, about the absurdity that one cannot escape. By analyzing insecurity, one …

Master Of None: Living, Thinking And Co-Creating With Unruly Frigid Bodies, Greeshma Chenni Veettil

Theses - ALL

This thesis explores the primary modes of my artistic practice, which involve paying attention to bodily sensations, posing questions about the ordinary, and engaging in purposeful drifts of inquiry. Through a loose assemblage of practices centered around ice, static photographs, and my own brown body, I delve into the vitality and transgressions inherent in these seemingly inert beings. My work draws upon feminist scholarship on embodiment and employs affective engagement as a methodology for unlearning. Disparate accounts are considered through a polyamorous engagement with diverse disciplines. In doing so, I underscore the importance of unbound curiosity over linearly connected deductions …

Burning Calories, Burning Ocean: Metabolic Rate In Bivalves As A Predictor Of Extinction Selectivity Through Time And During Rapid Global Warming, Siddharth Gavirneni May 2024

Burning Calories, Burning Ocean: Metabolic Rate In Bivalves As A Predictor Of Extinction Selectivity Through Time And During Rapid Global Warming, Siddharth Gavirneni

Theses - ALL

Organismal metabolic rate is linked to environmental temperature and oxygen consumption, and as such, may be a useful predictor of extinction risk during major climate- driven crises. However, metabolic attributes can be quantified in many ways, highlighting differing aspects of organisms’ ecology. Here, we estimate resting whole-body and mass-specific metabolic rates in post-Carboniferous bivalve taxa using body size and seawater paleotemperature to assess how metabolic rate determines survival both during and outside of intervals of rapid climate warming, or ‘hyperthermals’. Accounting for the effects of geographic range size, we find a pattern of preferential extinction of bivalves with lower total …

Hollers, Hills, And Buckshot : Anthologies Of Appalachia, Jessica Codell Mcclanahan

Theses - ALL

The works and thesis I present are in the spirit of reclaiming what it means to be a Hillbilly. Within this thesis I examine and demonstrate how decades of stereotypes play a role into how people and environments of Appalachia are devalued for the benefit of extractive industries. Showcasing that these industries are in direct opposition to the traditions of life in the area. Appalachia, being traditionally a land based economy and way of living, presents unique folkways demonstrated with worldviews that correlate life and land treatment. Crafts, folkways, and folk arts of the area highlight these views and history. …

Non-Compressible Grade 4 Hemorrhagic Liver Injury Model For Assessment Of Shape Memory Polymers As A Hemostatic Agent, Shi S. Dong May 2024

Non-Compressible Grade 4 Hemorrhagic Liver Injury Model For Assessment Of Shape Memory Polymers As A Hemostatic Agent, Shi S. Dong

Theses - ALL

Uncontrolled hemorrhage is a leading cause of trauma-related deaths, particularly in combat situations. The most administered treatment is gauze and tourniquets, which are shown to be ineffective for up to 80% of wounds, including non-compressible hemorrhage sites, such as those in the torso region. Shape memory polymer (SMP) foams have been shown to be an effective hemostatic dressing for traumatic wounds due to the tunability of their rapid clotting, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and drug-loading abilities. The SMP foam design can be characterized with animal models, and a porcine liver injury is the current ‘gold standard’ animal model. To address …

Diplomacy And The Dead: Authenticating The Sacred In Early Modern Spain, Caroline Barraco May 2024

Diplomacy And The Dead: Authenticating The Sacred In Early Modern Spain, Caroline Barraco

Theses - ALL

This thesis considers two case studies from the transnational Spanish relic trade at the turn of the seventeenth century. The first study is that of Don Guillén de San Clemente y Centellas, a Spanish ambassador active at the end of the sixteenth century who was a conduit for antique and medieval relics for elite collectors within Spain. The second is of Luisa de Carvajal y Mendoza, was a Spanish noblewoman who traveled to England at the beginning of the seventeenth century and retrieved, prepared, and transported the bodies of Catholic martyrs back to Spain as new relics. These case studies …

The Girls: Queering The Family Archive, Kathleen Warren May 2024

The Girls: Queering The Family Archive, Kathleen Warren

Theses - ALL

My research and artistic practice explore how queerness can offer a liberatory framework for confronting intergenerational cycles of grief that reinforce the dual closets of emotional and sexual repression. Rooted in my own family’s history of traumatic loss, I explore the dialectics of memory and identity in my project The Girls. I explore how closeting operates in families and archives through several theoretical frameworks, with perspectives from Marianne Hirsch, bell hooks, and Michael Foucault’s History of Sexuality. By investigating the gendered roles imposed by the traditional family gaze, religion, and shame, the text examines how photography, archives, and performance can …

Tethered, Robert Zumwalt May 2024

Tethered, Robert Zumwalt

Theses - ALL

Tethered explores the relationship I have built between music, the natural world, and the objects I make. Current ruminations as well as memories that influence my work are shared along with the techniques developed for this expression. In my ceramic practice, I work through multiple series simultaneously, often transitioning between projects, sometimes seemingly disparate. This writing mirrors that exploratory process, cautious not to arrive at any conclusions, as such definitive answers are not the artist’s responsibility. These things of my constructed world, these illusions that enable my actions, are examined as both obstacles and tools for connecting to the viewer.

The New Negro Myth, Jaleel Blanchard May 2024

The New Negro Myth, Jaleel Blanchard

Theses - ALL

The New Negro Myth explores the ways minstrel entertainment has influenced the creation and building of the animation and comics industry. My practice explores worldbuilding and character creation that pays homage to the aforementioned industries while interrogating already existing narratives. These characters are created with the vestigial minstrel (a character that is reminiscent of the minstrel) and vaudeville acts in mind. I also discuss the theme of the “other”, which plays a big role in limiting black representation as it creates an opposing force to white hegemony. Characters have consequently fallen prey to the “other” and the minstrel tradition, making …

Dead Woman Walking: Articulating Historical Violence Toward The Femme Through Visual Art And Cultural Experience, Angelica Elizabeth Starcovic May 2024

Dead Woman Walking: Articulating Historical Violence Toward The Femme Through Visual Art And Cultural Experience, Angelica Elizabeth Starcovic

Theses - ALL

Individual identity formation is a crucial tool in my artistic practice. I rely on articulating my experiences as femme to reclaim and denounce the signifiers of femininity invented and perverted by patriarchy. Using historical survey of instances and explorations of fear and violence through art and visual culture, my works reckon with how archaic gender beliefs still entrench themselves in our contemporary worldviews and their psychological results. The deconstructions of these facades uncover the violence and fear ingrained in feminine identity inflicted through bodily control in culture. Here I argue for her humanity against the abject violence culture and media …

Intraguild Competition Is More Severe In Obligate Mutualisms Than In Facultative Mutualisms, Thomas Johnson May 2024

Intraguild Competition Is More Severe In Obligate Mutualisms Than In Facultative Mutualisms, Thomas Johnson

Theses - ALL

Mutualism, or the beneficial interaction of species, is an important and widespread interaction type in nature. Mutualist species exchange goods or services that benefit the species involved. These benefits can include protection from predators, parasites, and disease, dispersal of individuals, offspring, or gametes, and provisioning of various nutrients. Well-known mutualisms include the pollination of flowering plants by insects, birds, and other animals and the interaction between clownfish and sea anemones. Many mutualistic associations are less visible than these examples, as organisms often form beneficial relationships with microorganisms, like the many beneficial bacteria that live in the human gut, or the …

Stochastic Algorithms For Simulating Protein Assembly In Biological Cells, Advait Shukla May 2024

Stochastic Algorithms For Simulating Protein Assembly In Biological Cells, Advait Shukla

Theses - ALL

Understanding membrane protein assembly using computational methods is critical in developing drug delivery strategies for tight junction diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Crohn’s diseases. While experimental methods, such as freeze-fracture micrographs, provide microscopic details of the protein strand networks, they cannot offer molecular-level information, which is necessary for drug design. This work attempts to close the gap by computationally predicting strand networks of the claudin family of proteins that form tight junctions across neighboring cells in epithelial and endothelial tissues. Using claudin dimer data collected by the Protein AssociatioN Energy Landscape (PANEL) method coupled with some Markovian approximations, we built …

Development And Application Of Small-Molecule Probes Targeting Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase, Jacob Moose May 2024

Development And Application Of Small-Molecule Probes Targeting Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase, Jacob Moose

Dissertations - ALL

Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide hormone that has wide-ranging physiological effects, including on metabolism, adipogenesis, insulin regulation, and addiction. Ghrelin offers an intriguing option for treatment of pathophysiologies related to these effects, as it requires a unique post-translational octanoyl modification to bind and activate its cognate receptor, growth hormone secretagogue 1a (GHSR). The enzyme responsible for this modification, ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT) therefore offers the ability to modulate ghrelin signaling through inhibition of the maturation pathway. Due to a lack of structural or mechanistic information about GOAT, pharmaceutical development of molecules capable of GOAT inhibition has been desired, but few …

The Even Harder Cases: How Conceptual Art As A Paradigm Affirms The Viability Of A Theory Of Art, William Galloway Osborne Iii May 2024

The Even Harder Cases: How Conceptual Art As A Paradigm Affirms The Viability Of A Theory Of Art, William Galloway Osborne Iii

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation proposes a theory of art founded on sociocultural accounts of creativity, with conceptual art as its explanatory model. This proposal is a direct response to Dom Lopes’s thesis in Beyond Art, which argues that a theory of art is not viable and that such theorizing should be passed to individual arts. Requirements for a viable theory of art emerge via a sustained critique of Lopes’s arguments. These requirements can be met by turning Lopes’s account of marginal “hard cases” on their head, centralizing the model of conceptual art as explanatory paradigm. Additionally, I introduce the “even harder cases”, …

Investigating Vocal Development In Humpback Whales: Caller Identification, Acoustic And Movement Behavior, And Comparisons Across Age, Julia Marie Zeh

Dissertations - ALL

Studying variation in individual behavior can elucidate drivers related to factors like age, social context, and the environment. Differences in behavior with age are a product of survival needs and developmental differences as animals physiologically mature and modify their behaviors in response to experience. Learning is of particular interest across taxa because it is fundamental to the development of complex behaviors, from problem-solving to social hierarchies to animal songs and human language. Humpback whales (Megaptera noveaeangliae) exhibit a variety of complex and culturally transmitted behaviors across their range, including a diverse acoustic repertoire. Despite decades of research on adult behavior, …
