The Investigation Of The Reaction Of 2,3-Dimethylfuran With O(³P) And The Estimate Of The Photoionization Cross Section Of C-Cl And Absolute Photoionization Cross Sections Of Chlorinated Organic Compounds, Yilan Lori Chen
Master's Theses
The work presented in this thesis focuses on gas-phase reactions, which are fundamental for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. The experiments are performed at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where there is a time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupled with tunable synchrotron radiation at Beamline 9.0.2 to collect high-quality data.
Chapter 1 details the background and purpose of each project, along with an overview of the origins of synchrotron radiation and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The adaptation of biofuels is a way to minimize carbon emission and air pollutants, so research surrounding the reaction dynamics …
Downregulation Of Dax-1 Expression Via Mirna Overexpression As A Mechanism To Potentiate Breast Cancer, Nicholas C. Devito
Downregulation Of Dax-1 Expression Via Mirna Overexpression As A Mechanism To Potentiate Breast Cancer, Nicholas C. Devito
Master's Theses
The orphan nuclear receptor DAX-1 (Dosage Sensitive Sex Reversal, Adrenal Hypoplasia Congenita, critical region on the X chromosome, gene 1) plays a key role in mammalian sex determination and steroidogenesis. In addition to these canonical examples, DAX-1 has been shown to play a contradictory role in cancer development. While DAX-1 is overexpressed in lung and prostate cancer, it is downregulated in breast cancer. One of the explanations for the paradoxical role of DAX-1 in cancer development could be microRNA (miRNA) dysregulation. After broadly surveying over 96 miRNAs historically upregulated in MCF7 breast cancer cells, we compared the expression of DAX-1 …
Between Populism And Settler Colonialism: A Us Case Study, Megan A. Morrell
Between Populism And Settler Colonialism: A Us Case Study, Megan A. Morrell
Culture, Society, and Praxis
United States political history is a uniquely populist and settler one. While there is plenty of scholarship on populism and on settler colonialism separately, there is a significant gap in understanding how the political phenomena are connected. To begin to remedy this gap, I argue that particularly in the US political context, populist and settler colonial sociopolitical logics are both historically and theoretically interconnected. Both political phenomena are central to understanding the foundations of American socio-political life. Working in a theoretical-historical mode, I identify five ways in which settler colonialism and populism have intersected, and in the process produce a …

A new case of pedipalp regeneration is described and illustrated in a subadult female of Scorpio kruglovi Birula, 1910. A small, regenerated part of chela is observed on the anterior aspect of a normally developed right patella. This is the second published case of pedipalp regeneration.
Politics, Authorship, And Philosophy: Teaching Margaret Cavendish’S The Blazing World In The Diverse Graduate Classroom, Martine Van Elk
Politics, Authorship, And Philosophy: Teaching Margaret Cavendish’S The Blazing World In The Diverse Graduate Classroom, Martine Van Elk
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This essay explores how Margaret Cavendish’s The Blazing World works differently when taught and read on its own and in combination with Cavendish’s other works. Focusing specifically on the graduate classroom, I examine and present strategies for teaching the book alongside works by other early modern women and for teaching it in a single-author course. While in isolation, The Blazing World allows for discussions that focus primarily on questions of gender, genre, class, and politics, read in tandem with Cavendish’s other works, in particular her philosophical writings, The Blazing World becomes a source for reflections on questions of creaturely identity, …

“A World Of Her Own Invention”: Teaching Margaret Cavendish’S Blazing World In The Early British Literature Survey And Beyond, Vanessa L. Rapatz
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Margaret Cavendish has only recently been included in the canonical literature anthologies and even then, the samplings of her prolific writings are severely truncated. However, even this small taste of Cavendish’s poems and excerpts of A Description of a New World called The Blazing World leave early British literature survey students hungry for more. Frequently, students in the survey choose to focus on Cavendish’s writing for their research projects in which they practice feminist and queer readings and engage with Cavendish as a key player in utopian and science fiction genres. Beyond the survey course, Blazing World works wonderfully in …
“Always Unguarded And Often Uncivil”: A Case For Lydia In The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Leah Benedict
“Always Unguarded And Often Uncivil”: A Case For Lydia In The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Leah Benedict
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Despite decades of feminist scholarship, Lydia Bennet has consistently been taken at Jane Austen’s word: she is viewed as capricious, difficult, and silly, and in most cases found to be deserving of her fate. But with the adaptation The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Lydia became the character most likely to inspire a heightened emotional bond with viewers. Because of the show’s format, Lydia’s voice and experiences became more central, and were conveyed with greater sympathy than prior adaptations. Against all anticipation, many viewers immediately identified not with Lizzie, but with Lydia. My paper explores the cultural contexts surrounding the web …
Effect Of Empagliflozin In Adult Patients With Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis, Peilin Austin Liu
Effect Of Empagliflozin In Adult Patients With Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis, Peilin Austin Liu
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis is a severe form of liver disease marked by fat accumulation, inflammation, and scarring, often advancing to cirrhosis. Currently, there are limited therapies to treat this condition. Empagliflozin, a Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 Inhibitor, that blocks renal reabsorption of glucose, has shown efficacy in reducing liver fat accumulation. However, there are currently no large-scale studies have investigated the effect of empagliflozin in treating metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis using histological findings. We propose a randomized controlled trial to study the effect of empagliflozin on the resolution of Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis. We will recruit participants with histology-confirmed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis and …

Biodiversity Loss & Urban Heat: A Nature- Based Wildlife Policy For The Las Vegas Metro, Zachary Billot
Student Research
As the population of the Las Vegas Metro continues to grow, new developments expand on the periphery. As Las Vegas continues to increase in size and develop further into wildlife habitat, not only are native animals and plants endangered, but residents are at risk of increasingly dangerous urban heat given the increase in impervious cover that makes Las Vegas the 2nd fastest warming metro in the U.S. This policy brief examines current policy and practice in place to highlight the need for positive human-wildlife interaction that will address the growing threat of biodiversity loss and heat vulnerability. This policy brief …
Comparing Long‑Term Patterns Of Spread Of Native And Invasive Plants In A Successional Forest, Matthew H. Yamamoto, Chad C. Jones
Comparing Long‑Term Patterns Of Spread Of Native And Invasive Plants In A Successional Forest, Matthew H. Yamamoto, Chad C. Jones
Botany Faculty Publications
A fundamental question in invasive plant ecology is whether invasive and native plants have different ecological roles. Differences in functional traits have been explored, but we lack a comparison of the factors affecting the spread of co-occurring natives and invasives. Some have proposed that to succeed, invasives would colonize a wider variety of sites, would disperse farther, or would be better at colonizing sites with more available light and soil nutrients than natives. We examined patterns of spread over 70 years in a regenerating forest in Connecticut, USA, where both native and invasive species acted as colonizers. We compared seven …
The Influence Of Play As Positive Emotion On Engagement And Self-Regulated Learning In An Online Higher Education Classroom, Kim Frost
Interdisciplinary Studies
Student demand for online learning is at an all-time high, making the identification of practical strategies for supporting student success in online learning more vital than ever. Positive emotion has been shown to promote self-regulated learning (SRL) and engagement, both evidenced predictors of student success. However, little is known about designing online learning environments to elicit positive emotion in students. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of play-infused learning design on SRL and engagement in an online, higher education classroom. This study is based on the premise that play is a positive affect emotional system that …
The Avialan Fauna Of The Late Cretaceous Prince Creek Formation, Alaska, Lauren N. Wilson
The Avialan Fauna Of The Late Cretaceous Prince Creek Formation, Alaska, Lauren N. Wilson
Geosciences
Modern polar regions are critical breeding grounds for over 250 species of birds. Some migrate to high latitudes for access to seasonally abundant resources during reproductive periods, whereas others are year-round residents. Despite the major role these birds play in polar ecosystems, we know very little of the origins of the utilization of polar ecosystems for nesting due to the rarity of avialan fossils from high latitudes. The avialan fossil record spans 150 million years, yet evidence for high-latitude bird reproduction extends only to the Eocene La Meseta Formation of Antarctica (56-33.6 Ma). Here, we report a remarkable polar avifauna …
Synthesis And Stereoselective Reduction Of Α-Fluoro-Β-Ketoesters By Ketoreductases, Matthew G. Vanagel
Synthesis And Stereoselective Reduction Of Α-Fluoro-Β-Ketoesters By Ketoreductases, Matthew G. Vanagel
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Using commercially available ketoreductase (KRED) enzymes, α-fluoro-β-hydroxy esters were stereoselectively synthesized from racemic α-fluoro-β-keto esters through dynamic reductive kinetic resolution (DYRKR). The α-fluoro-β-keto esters were synthesized via Reformatsky reactions between an aromatic aldehyde and ethyl bromofluoroacetate and subsequent oxidation with Dess Martin Periodinane (DMP). Two enzymes were selected for their ability to yield either syn or anti diastereomers. Three aromatic substrates were reduced in high diastereomeric and enantiomeric excess and good yields. The KRED products were derivatized with (R)- and (S)-α-methoxy-α-trifluoromethylphenylacetic acid (MTPA) and analyzed via ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy to determine their absolute stereochemistry via Mosher ester analysis. For the …
Understanding Preschool Teachers' Perceptions Of Challenging Behavior: "It's Exhausting", Elizabeth Stapleton
Understanding Preschool Teachers' Perceptions Of Challenging Behavior: "It's Exhausting", Elizabeth Stapleton
Educational Studies Dissertations
Child maltreatment is a widespread issue across the United States, directly impacting young children’s learning and behavior. Yet, variability found in early education pre-service training does not include focus on this topic. Early education teachers often experience low wages, long work hours, and a lack of support to meet the needs of young children. This mixed methods study sought to understand preschool teachers’ perceptions of challenging behavior in their classrooms and the impact challenging behavior has on relationships within the classroom community. Quantitative data was collected from 30 preschool teachers using the Student-Teacher Relationship Short Form and frequency ratings of …
Implementation Of Community-Based Natural Resource Management At Hustai National Park, Mongolia, Tsermaa Nyamdavaa
Implementation Of Community-Based Natural Resource Management At Hustai National Park, Mongolia, Tsermaa Nyamdavaa
Natural Resources
Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) combines scientific knowledge with community involvement to manage a variety of common pool resources (CPR) in a sustainable manner. In Mongolia, CBNRM has been implemented to manage rangelands in response to severe winters and rangeland degradation. In particular, Hustai National Park (HNP) has faced challenges due to the increased number of livestock which has led to exceeding the carrying capacity of the Buffer Zone rangelands despite efforts to implement CBNRM since 2004. The overarching question guiding the research is: How have CBNRM principles been implemented at HNP? In order to answer the research question, the …
Early Life Biology And Ecology Of King And Tanner Crabs In The Bering And Chukchi Seas, Jared Weems
Early Life Biology And Ecology Of King And Tanner Crabs In The Bering And Chukchi Seas, Jared Weems
Fisheries
Pelagic larvae and early benthic juveniles are believed to be the most vulnerable life stages for crabs. Where and when young crab occur and their response to environmental conditions is poorly understood. I present two case studies that demonstrate the importance of monitoring crab early life stages of economically and ecologically important species in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. First, collapsed fisheries and poor juvenile recruitment are recurring issues for many Alaska king crab stocks. Among the most notable examples, Pribilof Islands blue king crab is a federally overfished stock that has failed to rebuild after decades of conservation. Comparison …
Synergistic Effects Of Climate And Invasions: A Case Study Of Juvenile Pacific Salmon And Their Introduced Freshwater Predator (Esox Lucius) In A Changing Alaska River, Benjamin Rich
Fisheries
Climate change and invasive species are major individual drivers of declines in freshwater productivity and diversity, yet the potential for these factors to interact is poorly understood. I explored the synergistic effects of climate change and invasion to better understand observed changes in a freshwater community comprised of socially valuable salmonid fishes. I modeled daily predation and annual consumption of juvenile salmon by an introduced apex predator, Northern Pike (Esox lucius), as a function of time, streamflow, water temperature, and Northern Pike demography in a rapidly warming system in Southcentral Alaska. I hypothesized that Northern Pike predation would shift from …

504 Plans, School Gender Policy, And Gender Dysphoria: How The Case Of Kesha T. Williams May Change Education Policy, Clifford Clapp
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Gender dysphoria affects transgender people at significantly higher rates than other populations. In the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit case of Kesha T. Williams v. Stacey A. Kincaid, et al., 45 F.4th 759 (4th Cir. 2022), the Court found that the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, in denying Ms. Williams’ hormone replacement therapy for her gender dysphoria, had violated her right to equal treatment under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Court generally found that, despite the ADA being written with animus toward transgender people, even under that language, gender dysphoria was not excluded from protection …

Latin In Video Game Music: The Persisting Importance Of Classics In Video Gaming, Sophie Cassarino
College Honors Program
Video games have grown in popularity and relevance in global significance since the mid 1980’s, proliferating into a cosmopolitan art medium occupied by European, American, and Japanese companies exchanging and navigating their cultural differences. Within this globalized art form, elements of Greco-Roman society have become prevalent. Many facets of Classics can be found in games, including historic figures, ancient texts, and allusions to Roman society. The Latin language in particular is commonly found in video game music in a variety of game genres. This paper discusses the use of the Latin language in video game soundtracks in order to understand …
Investigating The Connectedness Of A Gorbonos Insect Swarm, Brendan Perez
Investigating The Connectedness Of A Gorbonos Insect Swarm, Brendan Perez
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Insect swarms exhibit collective behaviors that emerge from the interactions between individual insects. In midges, these interactions are thought to be governed by long-range acoustic signals from other insects in the swarm. A model developed by Gorbonos et al. adds the long-range acoustic behavior into an equation of motion to describe the midge swarm dynamics. This research expands on Gorbonos' model by considering various subsets of insect-insect interactions, and investigates how diffusion and polarization parameters vary with the number of interactions.

Therefore, it is important to clarify whether they counteract the expression of genes and proteins induced by amyloid-β. With this objective, we analyzed the relevance of human monocyte-derived microglia for in vitro modeling of neuroinflammation and its resolution in the context of Alzheimer's disease and investigated the pro-resolving bioactivity of maresin 1 on amyloid-β42-induced Alzheimer's disease-like inflammation. Locke’S “Wild Indian” In United States Supreme Court Jurisprudence, Anthony W. Hobert Phd
Locke’S “Wild Indian” In United States Supreme Court Jurisprudence, Anthony W. Hobert Phd
American Indian Law Journal
This article explores the impact of John Locke’s Two Treatises on United States Indigenous property rights jurisprudence. After discussing Locke’s arguments, the article turns to the rationales of the first and last cases of the Marshall Trilogy—Johnson v. McIntosh (1823) and Worcester v. Georgia (1832)—arguing that, contrary to prevailing political theory, Marshall’s opinion for the Court in Johnson puts forth a fundamentally Lockean justification for the dispossession of Indigenous property. This article also provides a brief analysis of Marshall’s explicit Vattelian rationale in Worcester, commentary on recent developments regarding the precedents, and recommendations for reconciling them within contemporary …
Multi-Year Water Quality Analysis Of Surface Water From Yukon River Watershed, Harrison Hee
Multi-Year Water Quality Analysis Of Surface Water From Yukon River Watershed, Harrison Hee
Engineering
The Yukon River has been monitored for water quality by the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council (YRITWC) for the ongoing Indigenous Observation Network (ION) project (NSF Award Number 1753389) since 2006. Other studies have dated back even further, allowing researchers to see trends in tested analytes over time. The newest available data obtained in recent years has allowed researchers to look at the Yukon River Basin (YRB) comparatively to previously assumed trends with larger sample sizes per year and in a more modern view with updated knowledge of the data collected. In addition to previously tested parameters (hardness, sulfate, and …
Implications Of Detachment Promoting Agents, Disinfectants And Flow Hydraulics On Growth And Dispersion Of Bacterial Biofilms In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Fayzul Kabir
Engineering
Biofilms in water distribution systems (WDS) can adversely affect the effluent water quality and structural integrity of pipes. Current disinfectants and flushing strategies often prove insufficient to mitigate biofilm growth. Long-term monitoring of biofilm growth under varied WDS flow and disinfection conditions is needed (and often overlooked) for improving biofilm management in the WDS. An alternative approach to counter biofilms in the WDS over the traditional approach of using antimicrobials is to target and weaken the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) instead of just the microorganisms in the biofilms - via the use of 'detachment promoting agents' (DPAs) to weaken the …

Rabies Management In The North, A One Health Problem In A Systems Theory Framework, Karsten Hueffer
Arctic and Northern Studies
Rabies is a significant public health concern and is often described as the quintessential One Health problem, linking especially animal health to human health. I examine how rabies is managed in the circumpolar North with three cases: Alaska, Northwest Territories, and Svalbard. In this thesis, I describe rabies management in the North using a systems theory framework and explore challenges in this limited application of the One Health paradigm, focusing on animal and human health agencies and their interaction in rabies management in a northern environment. I conducted semi-structured interviews with fifteen key informants. My results indicate that most respondents …

The ability to make on-field, split-second decisions is critical for National Football League (NFL) game officials. Multiple principles in visual function are critical for accuracy and precision of these play calls, including foveation time and unobstructed line of sight, static visual acuity, dynamic visual acuity, vestibulo-ocular reflex, and sufficient visual field. Prior research has shown that a standardized curriculum in these neuro-ophthalmic principles have demonstrated validity and self-rated improvements in understanding, confidence, and likelihood of future utilization by NFL game officials to maximize visual performance during officiating. Virtual reality technology may also be able to help optimize understandings of specific …
