Let Us Feast! The Long Tradition Of The Feast And How It Has Featured Through Time In Literature And Film, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Why do we celebrate so often with good food? Festive meals are as ancient as they are contemporary, and have featured in books, films and stories since we began to tell them, from Beowulf to Big Night (1996). Feasts strengthen interpersonal and communal bonds, but also offer the chance to showcase wealth and generosity; however, being a host can be a challenge as well.

Differential Methylation Region Detection Via An Array-Adaptive Normalized Kernelweighted Model, Daniel Alhassan, Gayla R. Olbricht, Akim Adekpedjou Jun 2024

Differential Methylation Region Detection Via An Array-Adaptive Normalized Kernelweighted Model, Daniel Alhassan, Gayla R. Olbricht, Akim Adekpedjou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A differentially methylated region (DMR) is a genomic region that has significantly different methylation patterns between biological conditions. Identifying DMRs between different biological conditions is critical for developing disease biomarkers. Although methods for detecting DMRs in microarray data have been introduced, developing methods with high precision, recall, and accuracy in determining the true length of DMRs remains a challenge. In this study, we propose a normalized kernel-weighted model to account for similar methylation profiles using the relative probe distance from "nearby" CpG sites. We also extend this model by proposing an array-adaptive version in attempt to account for the differences …

An Interdisciplinary Review Of Stress Mechanisms, Health Effects, And The Influence Of A Growth Mindset, Nathaniel Hayes Barnes

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The human experience of stress plays a pivotal role in directing overall health and wellbeing. Stress manifests in our minds and bodies, influences our relationships, and weaves collectively into the fabric of shared society. The current capstone project essentially comprises two sections. First, a comprehensive literature review delves into an interdisciplinary depiction of chronic stress, exploring its wide-ranging impact from biological, psychological, behavioral, social, and economic perspectives. The following section presents original research focused on the moderating effects of growth mindset on the relationships between chronic stress and negative stress-related health outcomes, including a discussion regarding effective preventative measures and …

Non-Native Invasive Earthworms In The Midwest And Eastern United States: A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen Handler Jun 2024

Non-Native Invasive Earthworms In The Midwest And Eastern United States: A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen Handler

Michigan Tech Publications

Prior to European settlement, earthworms were rare across most of the Midwest and Eastern United States (James 1995). This is presumably because earthworms were slow to recolonize after the last glacial period. Currently, earthworms of European and Asian origin are invading this region with demonstrable effects on soil characteristics and ecosystem functions. Eradicating non-native invasive earthworms (hereafter, “earthworms”) is generally not a realistic management goal. Still, understanding how earthworms act as ecosystem engineers will aid land managers in considering how earthworms modify local effects of climate change and management actions on natural ecosystems. Additionally, where earthworms have not yet invaded, …

Soil Organic Carbon In Temperate Managed Ecosystems : A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen D. Handler Jun 2024

Soil Organic Carbon In Temperate Managed Ecosystems : A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen D. Handler

Michigan Tech Publications

Soils store more carbon than the atmosphere and vegetation combined, an impressive fact that underscores the importance of considering soils when managing for ecosystem carbon. Not only do soils store vast amounts of carbon, but soil carbon also persists in the ecosystem for much longer than other pools of carbon. This primer is an introduction to soil organic carbon storage, sequestration, and cycling in terrestrial managed ecosystems. The effects of site factors, climate change, and management on soil carbon are discussed.

Although evolution is driven by changes in how regulatory pathways control development, we know little about the molecular details underlying these transitions. The TRA-2 domain that mediates contact with TRA-1 is conserved in Caenorhabditis. By comparing the interaction of these proteins in two species, we identified a striking change in how sexual development is controlled. Identical mutations in this domain promote oogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans but promote spermatogenesis in Caenorhabditis briggsae. Furthermore, the effects of these mutations involve the male-promoting gene fem-3 in C. elegans but are independent of fem-3 in C. briggsae. Finally, reciprocal mutations in these genes show …

Differential Expression Of Wnt5a Long And Short Isoforms In Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma., Amy M Strope, Cody Phillips, Sabin Khadgi, Scott A Jenkinson, Karen T Coschigano, Ramiro Malgor

Oncology Articles

Wnt ligands belong to a family of secreted glycoproteins in which binding to a range of receptors/co-receptors activates several intracellular pathways. WNT5A, a member of the Wnt family, is classified as a non-canonical Wnt whose activation triggers planar cell polarity (PCP) and Ca+2 downstream pathways. Aberrant expression of WNT5A has been shown to play both protective and harmful roles in an array of conditions, such as inflammatory disease and cancer. In the present study, using histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular methods, we investigated the expression of two isoforms of WNT5A, WNT5A-Short (WNT5A-S) and WNT5A-Long (WNT5A-L) in bladder urothelial carcinoma (UC). Three …

Baseline Characterization Of Semen From Philippine Native Chickens: Banaba, Joloano And Paraoakan, Darcy Pamulaklakin, Carla Alilie Junsay, Consuelo Amor Estrella, Percival Sangel

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

The study aimed to characterize and establish baseline data on the quantity and quality of fresh avian semen utilizing a sample of Philippine native roosters. Twenty-two heads each were acquired from breeds Banaba, Joloano, and Paraoakan. The baseline data analysis revealed significant variations in semen volume among different genetic groups, with Banaba displaying the highest volume, followed by Joloano and Paraoakan. Banaba also exhibited the highest semen pH value of 7.27 when compared to the other two genetic groups (P < 0.05). Across various genetic groups of native chickens, the majority of semen samples demonstrated a thick and creamy consistency and color (42.6%), followed by thin and creamy (32.9%), with a statistical significance of P < 0.05. Furthermore, variations in sperm concentration were observed among genetic groups, with Paraoakan having the highest sperm concentration, followed by Banaba and Joloano (P < 0.05). When the semen from Banaba and Joloano native roosters were extended in Ringer’s solution, it exhibited good motility, with more than 50% of spermatozoa in motion, even after six hours of extension. In contrast, the pooled extended semen from Paraoakan native roosters displayed poor motility, particularly after eight hours of extension (P < 0.05). The study also showed that storage temperatures did not significantly affect all the sperm quality parameters of Banaba and Joloano. However, for Paraoakan, samples stored at low temperatures of 5 – 10ºC had significantly higher percent motile and progressive sperm, and lower percent static sperm than those stored at room temperature (22 – 25ºC) (P < 0.05).

Disparately Disabled: Advocating For All Federal Courts Of Appeals To Make Disparate Impact Claims Cognizable Under Federal Disability Rights Law, Dustine Bowker

Washington Law Review

People with disabilities have the same rights and deserve to enjoy the same privileges as everyone else. However, people with disabilities face societal inequities that hinder their full participation in society. As a result of persistent advocacy and civil protest, federal laws have been enacted to prohibit discrimination based on a person’s disability. Yet, policies that discriminate against people with disabilities have continued. One cause of this troubling situation is that federal circuit courts still disagree on whether federal disability rights laws, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), allow plaintiffs …

Major Reform With Minor Risk: Implementation Of Change Initiatives As A Learning Challenge, Sara J. Berman, Chance Meyer Jun 2024

Major Reform With Minor Risk: Implementation Of Change Initiatives As A Learning Challenge, Sara J. Berman, Chance Meyer

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

The call for change in legal education has been loud and clear for more than a century. Despite some resistance among powerholders who benefit from status quo, faculty and administrators across the country work earnestly to solve problems, improve learning, and promote equity. Yet time and again, initiatives are logjammed, shot down as unworkable, misimplemented, or abandoned prematurely when they do not meet unrealistically high expectations for immediate, dramatic results. This article builds on the premises that (1) change is needed, (2) a wide range of sound change ideas for reform and progress are available, and (3) effective implementation of …

Re-Touch, Yuxin Jin Jun 2024

Re-Touch, Yuxin Jin

Masters Theses

Many special moments are fleeting and buried in our memories. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, people are always pursuing efficiency, and as we move forward, we gradually lose some of our perceptions of life.

I explored the role of memory in establishing the emotional connection between newly designed objects and people. Shared experiences and feelings can evoke emotional resonance and a sense of collective experience. When harnessed in design, these feelings can facilitate a deeper understanding and connection to the product. Therefore, objects transformed from these shared experiences can not only carry memories but also become carriers …

Technocene, Vir Joseph Naidu Jun 2024

Technocene, Vir Joseph Naidu

Masters Theses

Embodied human communication within the Anthropocene. Existing at the intersection of technology, and the body.

The design industry has developed technology that is, paradoxically, isolating. The exposure to a vast audience in the digital sphere has introduced new societal pressures, leading to a disconnection from our immediate surroundings, detached, and donning metaphorical masks. Technocene lives on the fringes of the discipline by blending conceptual thinking with practical application. Through curious, experimental artifacts, it prompts us to shed our masks and embrace vulnerability. Technocene endeavors to reimagine the human experience by acting as a discursive design project. It probes the boundaries …

Navigating State Interventions: The Pivotal Role Of Ptas In Modern Trade Conflicts, Andrew D. Mitchell Jun 2024

Navigating State Interventions: The Pivotal Role Of Ptas In Modern Trade Conflicts, Andrew D. Mitchell

Chicago Journal of International Law

In international trade, State interventions often challenge the efficacy of traditional antidumping and countervailing measures under the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework. This article examines the limitations of the Anti-Dumping Agreement and the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM Agreement) in addressing State interventions, such as export taxes, export bans on raw materials, and non-commercial activities by State-owned enterprises. These interventions pose significant legal and economic challenges in global trade. The article advocates for the potential of preferential trade agreements (PTAs) as practical tools to address these challenges, surpassing traditional legal pathways under the Anti-Dumping Agreement. An analysis of …

Shakespeare, Succession, And Estate Planning:Lessons From The Bard, Leslie Kiefer Amann Jun 2024

Shakespeare, Succession, And Estate Planning:Lessons From The Bard, Leslie Kiefer Amann

ACTEC Law Journal

Probated in 1616, Shakespeare's Will is surprisingly relevant today. Two daughters survived him, but his only son died at age 11. Wife and daughters could not inherit a business in the theater, so he made changes in structure of the businesses he owned, and reallocated assets to accommodate the loss of his male heir. Shakespeare left no autobiographical information, but by examining his legal documents, we see him shift a thriving business, dependent on the unique talents and active participation of its founder, to passive assets in modified entity structures and generate an income stream for female descendants. Changes made …

Public Health And Human Health Implications Of Climate Mobility, Julia Neusner, Ama Francis Jun 2024

Public Health And Human Health Implications Of Climate Mobility, Julia Neusner, Ama Francis

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Climate change poses significant challenges at the intersection of human and public health, mobility, and international law. Adverse climate impacts undermine the quality of human and public health, contributing to increasing global mobility, while climate-impacted migrants and displaced people can experience severe health challenges in transit and in their receiving communities. Moreover, the nexus between climate change, human and public health, and mobility exacerbates pre-existing vulnerabilities, undermining human rights and implicating State obligations. As international and regional courts, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), clarify states’ duty to protect people from the adverse impacts of climate change, it is …
