The Brainstem As A Conserved System For Consciousness: Integrating Phylogeny, Neurology, And Psychology, Shadia Kawkabani, Kevin P. Kaut Jun 2024

The Brainstem As A Conserved System For Consciousness: Integrating Phylogeny, Neurology, And Psychology, Shadia Kawkabani, Kevin P. Kaut

Journal of Neuropsychology and Behavioral Processes

Historically, scientists and physicians have taken a corticocentric view of consciousness, emphasizing the need for a cortex in producing the conscious experience. The preserved consciousness observed in hydranencephalic children and decorticated rats suggests that some form of consciousness may be produced by a subcortical network. The brainstem, a phylogenetically conserved brain system, could serve as the major integrative network to produce this form of consciousness—referred to as ‘affective consciousness’, the evolutionary antecedent to the reflective consciousness allowing humans to reflect on experiences. The functional integration of the brainstem with the amygdala, motor network, and other subcortical structures provides the architecture …

Controversy In Consciousness: Is The Brainstem Sufficient For Sentience?, Shadia Kawkabani, Kevin P. Kaut Jun 2024

Controversy In Consciousness: Is The Brainstem Sufficient For Sentience?, Shadia Kawkabani, Kevin P. Kaut

Journal of Neuropsychology and Behavioral Processes

Our understanding of consciousness is quite possibly in need of further discussion, elaboration, and updating. What was once principally the domain of philosophical inquiry has entered the era of advanced research methods and biomedical ethics – both of which have influenced the need to reconsider this most challenging of topics. The challenge for those interested in consciousness is at least twofold: 1) to further operationally define what is meant by consciousness, with a greater understanding of how consciousness can be manifest, and 2) to better identify the neural mechanisms subserving the diverse presentations/manifestations of consciousness, and reconcile the developing literatures …

Phototaxis In The Terrestrial Isopod: A Mechanism For Investigating Invertebrate Learning And Memory, Christopher Buzzelli, Jessica Kent, Chelsea Pawlak, Kevin P. Kaut Jun 2024

Phototaxis In The Terrestrial Isopod: A Mechanism For Investigating Invertebrate Learning And Memory, Christopher Buzzelli, Jessica Kent, Chelsea Pawlak, Kevin P. Kaut

Journal of Neuropsychology and Behavioral Processes

Isopods readily explore new environments and typically prefer contexts with lower levels of illumination (i.e., negative phototaxis). In the first of two behavioral experiments reported here, the ability of isopods to discriminate between light and dark nesting regions was confirmed, although evidence suggests an initial ‘instinctive’ draw toward a darker context. Extending these findings to experiment 2, isopods were trained against their negatively phototaxic tendency and had to exit a darkened start chamber in order to locate nesting material in a brighter chamber. Within-session improvements in latency to enter the nesting region were noted across training trials, coupled with evidence …

Who Should Be Liable? Examining The Corporate Liability Regime For Cybersecurity Risks, Angel R. Gardner Jun 2024

Who Should Be Liable? Examining The Corporate Liability Regime For Cybersecurity Risks, Angel R. Gardner

Student Journal of Information Privacy Law

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) poses new and substantial security risks for individual and national security. The IoT leaves networks susceptible to hacking, a form of unauthorized access into another person’s system or device. All devices that use the IoT are at risk of unauthorized access—a few examples include vehicles or medical devices. Currently, there are no regulations requiring corporations to protect their software from unauthorized intrusions. However, the current tort landscape does not allow for individuals to recover when there are unauthorized network intrusions where there is no tangible harm. This paper discusses why cybersecurity intrusions …

Distinct Expression Patterns Of Hedgehog Signaling Components In Mouse Gustatory System During Postnatal Tongue Development And Adult Homeostasis, Archana Kumari, Nicole E Franks, Libo Li, Gabrielle Audu, Sarah Liskowicz, John D Johnson, Charlotte M Mistretta, Benjamin L Allen

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

The Hedgehog (HH) pathway regulates embryonic development of anterior tongue taste fungiform papilla (FP) and the posterior circumvallate (CVP) and foliate (FOP) taste papillae. HH signaling also mediates taste organ maintenance and regeneration in adults. However, there are knowledge gaps in HH pathway component expression during postnatal taste organ differentiation and maturation. Importantly, the HH transcriptional effectors GLI1, GLI2 and GLI3 have not been investigated in early postnatal stages; the HH receptors PTCH1, GAS1, CDON and HHIP, required to either drive HH pathway activation or antagonism, also remain unexplored. Using lacZ reporter mouse models, we mapped expression of the HH …

Malnutrition Alters Protein Expression Of Kndy Neuropeptides In The Arcuate Nucleus Of Mature Ewes, Jennifer F. Thorson, Ligia D. Prezotto Jun 2024

Malnutrition Alters Protein Expression Of Kndy Neuropeptides In The Arcuate Nucleus Of Mature Ewes, Jennifer F. Thorson, Ligia D. Prezotto

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The neuropeptides kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin A are imperative for the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and luteinizing hormone to ultimately regulate reproductive cyclicity. A population of neurons co-expressing these neuropeptides, KNDy neurons, within the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC) are positioned to integrate energy status from afferent neuronal and glial cells. We hypothesized that KNDyexpressing neurons in the ARC of mature ewes are influenced by energy balance. To test this hypothesis, ovary-intact, mature ewes were fed to lose, maintain, or gain body weight and hypothalamic tissue harvested during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. Fluorescent, multiplex …

Artificial Intelligence As The Next Front In The Class War, Christopher Hill Jun 2024

Artificial Intelligence As The Next Front In The Class War, Christopher Hill

Dissertations and Theses

For many years, artificial intelligence has been confined to the realm of science fiction, and while the technology has been in development, predicting the effects AI will have on our society has been a challenging endeavor. The release of ChatGPT in 2022, the subsequent mass adoption of the AI chatbot, and the response by other private firms in the field announced AI's permanent entrance into the public sphere. These recent strides made in the field of artificial intelligence reveal that the pace of technological development has outstripped the rate at which we are able to politically examine and understand these …

Vertebral Hu Value And The Pectoral Muscle Index Based On Chest Ct Can Be Used To Opportunistically Screen For Osteoporosis, Xiong-Yi Wang, Sheng Pan, Wei-Feng Liu, Yi-Ke Wang, Si-Min Yun, You-Jia Xu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Existing studies have shown that computed tomography (CT) attenuation and skeletal muscle tissue are strongly associated with osteoporosis; however, few studies have examined whether vertebral HU values and the pectoral muscle index (PMI) measured at the level of the 4th thoracic vertebra (T4) are strongly associated with bone mineral density (BMD). In this study, we demonstrate that vertebral HU values and the PMI based on chest CT can be used to opportunistically screen for osteoporosis and reduce fracture risk through prompt treatment.

METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 1000 patients who underwent chest CT and DXA scans from August 2020-2022. The …

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We are already experiencing the rapid pace of environmental perturbation in the Anthropocene, necessitating the development of new tools and techniques for measuring changes in ecosystem dynamics. Sentinel species, from birds to invertebrates, have been used to provide insights into ecosystem function, as leading indicators of risk to human health and as harbingers of future change, with implications for ecosystem structure and function. Here, we offer an update to previous research identifying marine top predators as indicators of ecosystem shifts and examine terrestrial sentinels and the latest research on sentinels of pollution and human health. Using ecosystem sentinels enables rapid …

How the KRAS oncogene drives cancer growth remains poorly understood. Therefore, we established a systemwide portrait of KRAS- and ERK-dependent gene transcription in KRAS-mutant cancer to delineate the molecular mechanisms of growth and of inhibitor resistance. Unexpectedly, our KRAS-dependent gene signature diverges significantly from the frequently cited Hallmark KRAS signaling gene signature, is driven predominantly through the ERK mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade, and accurately reflects KRAS- and ERK-regulated gene transcription in KRAS-mutant cancer patients. Integration with our ERK-regulated phospho- and total proteome highlights ERK deregulation of the anaphase promoting complex/cyclosome and other components of the cell cycle machinery as …

Cost-Effectiveness And Threshold Analysis Of Deep Brain Stimulation Vs Treatment-As-Usual For Treatment-Resistant Depression, Katherine E Kabotyanski, Ricardo A Najera, Garrett P Banks, Himanshu Sharma, Nicole R Provenza, Benjamin Y Hayden, Sanjay J Mathew, Sameer A Sheth

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) affects approximately 2.8 million people in the U.S. with estimated annual healthcare costs of $43.8 billion. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is currently an investigational intervention for TRD. We used a decision-analytic model to compare cost-effectiveness of DBS to treatment-as-usual (TAU) for TRD. Because this therapy is not FDA approved or in common use, our goal was to establish an effectiveness threshold that trials would need to demonstrate for this therapy to be cost-effective. Remission and complication rates were determined from review of relevant studies. We used published utility scores to reflect quality of life after treatment. Medicare …
