Changes In Soil Fertility And Plant Nutrient Contents In Degraded Tropical Pasture After Renovation, M C. Macedo, V.P. B. Euclides
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A grazing experiment was conducted on an Oxisol testing five degraded tropical grasses renovated with two levels of fertilizer with the objective to study seasonal changes in plant nutrient contents and soil fertility. Total dry matter availability, green and dead matter availabilities, nutrient concentration in leaf tissue and soil fertility were the parameters measured. Availability of forage and leaf nutrients was significantly dependent on seasonal changes with green matter on offer decreasing over years. Soil fertility increased after renovation and declined thereafter. Soil available-P decreased and it was related to sustainability of green matter on offer. Soil organic matter mineralization …

Productivity Of Fodder Beet On Sandy Soil In Egypt, M A. El-Nahrawy, A Z. Abd El-Halim, H S. Oushy
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Farmyard manure effect on the productivity of five fodder beet varieties grown on sandy soil was investigated during three successive seasons. It was revealed from the results that FYM can effectively convert the non-productive sandy soil to a relatively productive soil. FYM application resulted in an increase of 145, 97, 55, 40, 39 and 43% for dry matter. Fresh matter, germination percentage, plant height, root length and root diameter, respectively, averaged over varieties and seasons.

Brachiaria Brizantha Response To Phosphorus Rates In The Nutrient Solution, F A. Monteiro, R A. Martim, W T. Mattos
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Seven phosphorus rates in the nutrient solution were studied in a greenhouse experiment for Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst) Stapf. Plants had 54 days of growth and 49 days of regrowth. Significant responses in forage yield, tiller number and root dry weight were found. Plant tops were divided into four parts and phosphorus concentration in each one significantly changed with phosphorus rates. Sampling of the young leaf blades and analyzing for phosphorus is proposed for diagnostic purposes. A critical phosphorus concentration of 1.2 g kg-1 is suggested as the critical level in the young leaf blades.

Bahiagrass Forage Production And Quality As Effected By Municipal Biosolids, R M. Muchovej, J E. Rechcigl
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Production of biosolids has been increasing consistently in the last few years. Land application of wastes is being regarded as an alternative means of disposal and as a source of inexpensive fertilizer material. Pastures are particularly attractive in this regard since the areas occupied are extensive and large amounts of fertilizer are required for adequate production. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various rates of biosolids on bahiagrass yield and quality. Forage samples were collected from each plot from April to December. Significant increases in dry matter production, crude protein content and in vitro digestibility …

The effect of nitrogen and phosphorus application on yield and sward structure as height and leaf, stem and dead forage composition of dwarf elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) cv. Mott was studied under field conditions and complementary irrigation, during one year at very dry tropical forest with a semiarid climate in Venezuela. The nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) rate were 0, 150, 350, 450, kg ha-1 year and 0, 50 and 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 year respectively. The N rate increased the plant height (81.52 cm), leaf, stem and death production (10, 8.13, and 1.62 t DM ha-1 respectively) …
Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles
Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Soil acidity limits pasture establishment and productivity in the moister eastern half of South Africa. Sound lime requirement guidelines based on soil test data are required. In the study reported here, lime responses of annual (Lolium multiflorum) and perennial (Lolium perenne) ryegrasses were evaluated in irrigated field trials located on acidic, highly weathered soils. Annual ryegrass (yield response to lime 27 to 32%) was found to be markedly more tolerant of soil acidity than perennial ryegrass (yield response 68%). Acid saturations of up to 20% had little impact on the yield of annual ryegrass, while yield …

Nitrogen Fertilization In Winter Forage Crops In The Southeast Of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), M A. Marino, A Mazzanti, H E. Echeverria, F Andrade
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The potential growth in the winter annual forage crops in the Southeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), is limited by the availability of nitrogen during the winter period. The effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth of the two main winter forage crops: oat (Avena sativa) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) was analyzed. Under winter-spring temperatures a higher growth potential was shown by annual ryegrass. The critical N doses were 150 and 100 kg.ha-1 of N for oat and annual ryegrass, respectively. The nitrogen dilution curves and the critical N concentration in the forage were determined. The …
Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale
Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A glasshouse experiment was carried out to determine how increasing rates of P supply (0, 33, 100 and 300 kg P ha-1) influenced the water use efficiency of white clover grown in a P-deficient soil under dry conditions. Increasing the P supply enhanced both shoot dry matter yield and water use by the clover plants. The relatively greater dry matter response meant that water use efficiency also increased with added P. High rates of water extraction by these high-P clover plants resulted in a marked drying of soil. Despite these dry soil conditions there was no adverse effect on growth …

The Effect Of Fertiliser History On Nutrient Accumulation And Plant-Available Nutrient Supply In Legume-Based Pasture Soils, J L. Moir, M J. Hedley, A D. Mackay, R W. Tillman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Animal production in New Zealand is dependent on pastoral legumes to build soil nitrogen fertility, which otherwise limits the growth of the major sward component, grass. Traditionally, in order to sustain legume vigour, single superphosphate has been applied to elevate soil phosphorus and sulphur levels. Rarely have either the agronomic or nutrient efficiencies of these systems been assessed. Fourteen hill country pasture sites in three broad rainfall regimes were chosen to assess the effect of contrasting fertiliser histories on soil fertility, in particular nitrogen availability. At each site soil fertility indices and pasture production for the 1993/94 growing season were …

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects more than 95% of adults worldwide and is closely associated with various malignancies. Considering the complex life cycle of EBV, developing vaccines targeting key entry glycoproteins to elicit robust and durable adaptive immune responses may provide better protection. EBV gHgL-, gB- and gp42-specific antibodies in healthy EBV carriers contributed to sera neutralizing abilities in vitro, indicating that they are potential antigen candidates. To enhance the immunogenicity of these antigens, we formulate three nanovaccines by co-delivering molecular adjuvants (CpG and MPLA) and antigens (gHgL, gB or gp42). These nanovaccines induce robust humoral and cellular responses through efficient …

Faculty Research 2024
A healthy lifestyle has been associated with decreased risk of developing breast cancer. Using untargeted metabolomics profiling, which provides unbiased information regarding lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise, we aim to identify the molecular mechanisms connecting lifestyle and breast cancer through network analysis. A total of 100 postmenopausal women, 50 with breast cancer and 50 cancer-free controls, were selected from the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project (LIBCSP). We measured untargeted plasma metabolomics using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Using the "enet" package, we retained highly correlated metabolites representing active molecular network (AMN) clusters for analysis. LASSO was used …

Teaching Caregivers To Implement The Picture Exchange Communication System: An Evaluation Of Video Modeling, Carlie Lawson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities may not develop functional vocal repertoires. For these individuals, the use of an alternative augmentative communication (AAC) system may be required. Training caregivers to use an AAC system with their children can increase communication in the home. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is type of AAC commonly used with individuals that have little to no vocal speech. Video modeling is a training procedure that has been shown to be effective when training individuals to implement behavioral analytic procedures. To date, there is no published research on the use of video modeling to train caregivers …
Using Instructive Feedback To Expand Second Language Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Barbara D. Rodriguez
Using Instructive Feedback To Expand Second Language Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Barbara D. Rodriguez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are millions of people who speak multiple languages (U.S. Census Bureau, 2019), yet there is a common misconception that teaching a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) more than one language will cause delays in language acquisition (Trelles & Castro, 2019). This misconception has led to fear amongst bilingual caregivers, resulting in many choosing to not speak to their child in their heritage language, which in turn can cause communication barriers between them and their child. It is imperative that a child from a bilingual home can communicate (e.g., respond to instructions) in both languages. However, because many children …

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)
An outbreak of lupine alkaloid neurotoxicosis and death occurred in sheep grazed on rangeland areas of the Nevada Great Basin during the summer of 2023. Overall, 97 sheep died despite veterinary supportive care. Lupinus argenteus var. utahensis was implicated as the causative plant with high levels of lupanine (11.5 µg/mg) and spartiene (13.7 µg/mg) in collected and archived samples. Previous reports of sheep deaths due to lupine ingestion have not been recorded in this region. An increased abundance of the number plants producing seed pods having a high alkaloid content may have been associated with abnormally elevated levels of precipitation …

Meta-Theoretic Competence For Computational Agent-Based Modeling, Hillary Swanson, Uri Wilensky
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
In the U.S. context, science standards encourage educators to engage students in modeling practices, including computational modeling. While much work has investigated the productivity of computational modeling with respect to students' development of scientific content knowledge, less work has focused on students' development of knowledge and skills for participation in computational modeling practices. A first step in understanding how these practices develop is examining students' activity in the context of computational modeling environments with attention to the productive moves they make. These moves can provide insight into the knowledge they bring to their learning, which may be foundational to the …
Application And Development Of Ceragenins In Medical Device Coatings For Clinical Settings, Elliot E. Sherren
Application And Development Of Ceragenins In Medical Device Coatings For Clinical Settings, Elliot E. Sherren
Theses and Dissertations
Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) pose a significant and increasing threat to global health. One primary cause of this threat is increasing antibiotic resistance. As traditional antibiotics continue to grow less effective, there is an urgent need for novel antimicrobial strategies. This work explores the potential of ceragenins, also known as cationic steroid antimicrobials (CSAs), as a promising alternative to combat HAIs. Specifically, we investigated potential roles that CSAs can play in the context of multiple medical device coatings in healthcare settings. Ceragenins are synthetic mimic of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) which exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against many common pathogens that have been …
Evaluating The Effects Of Cheatgrass On Western Burrowing Owls, Kaylee R. Draughon
Evaluating The Effects Of Cheatgrass On Western Burrowing Owls, Kaylee R. Draughon
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a global decline of specialist species observed in recent decades due to the impacts of climate change, invasive species, and habitat loss. Habitat loss and degradation may lead to a mismatch between habitat attractiveness and actual quality, otherwise known as an ecological trap. Ecological traps occur when an organism is constrained by its evolutionary past to select for cues that no longer accurately predict habitat quality. Specialist species are more susceptible to ecological traps due to greater reliance on and fidelity to historic sites and resources. The burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia), a specialist bird species adapted to …

Multiple Omics Levels Of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Aleksander Turk, Eva Čeh, George A Calin, Tanja Kunej
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a lymphoproliferative malignancy characterized by the proliferation of functionally mature but incompetent B cells. It is the most prevalent type of leukemia in Western populations, accounting for approximately 25% of new leukemia cases. While recent advances, such as ibrutinib and venetoclax treatment have improved patient outlook, aggressive forms of CLL such as Richter transformation still pose a significant challenge. This discrepancy may be due to the heterogeneity of factors contributing to CLL development at multiple -omics levels. However, information on the omics of CLL is fragmented, hindering multi-omics-based research into potential treatment options. To address …

The mitochondrial stress test is a gold-standard approach for assessing adipose tissue physiological functions and pathological changes. Here, we present a protocol for conducting Seahorse assays using ex vivo mouse brown and white adipose depots. We describe steps for rehydrating the cartridge, preparing freshly harvested fat depots, placing them onto an islet capture plate, and incubating them in a non-CO2 incubator. We then detail procedures for adding mitochondrial stressor solutions and conducting the mitochondrial stress test using the Seahorse XFe24 Analyzer. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to An et al.1.

Insect migration is an important phenomenon characterized by the long-distance travel of various species in search of resources, safety, breeding, and/or suitable climates. However, relatively little is known about insect migration patterns and the genetic factors associated with them. Three closely related species of dragonflies (Odonata: Aeshnidae), Anax junius, A. strenuus, and A. walsinghami, form a clade of migratory and non-migratory species and present a natural laboratory to study the evolution of genes that may be related to muscle developments and insect migration. In this study, we sequence the whole genomes of these three Anax species to present a resource …

Exploring Seizure Signal Processing And Methods To Characterize Seizure-Like Activity In Mouse Brains, Benjamin Kearsley
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Status Epilepticus (SE) is a dangerous type of seizure that is difficult to treat and can have permanent or fatal consequences. Developing methods to properly process and classify SE in Local Field Potential (LFP) signals are important steps towards being able to predict SE in clinic and save lives. This thesis explores methods for the seizure data processing LFP data with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of the effect of brain region and tissue preparation paradigm on power output in specific frequency ranges. The brain regions compared are the neocortex and hippocampus, and the preparation paradigms are 4AP …
