Importance Of Extrinsic Cues Of Grass-Fed Beef By U.S. Consumers Across Regions, Elizabeth K. Crandall, Kelsey Hall
Importance Of Extrinsic Cues Of Grass-Fed Beef By U.S. Consumers Across Regions, Elizabeth K. Crandall, Kelsey Hall
Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Faculty Publications
Extrinsic qualities have become a priority because they affect the type of beef consumers purchase from grocery stores, farmers' markets, restaurants, and private vendors (Cheung et al., 2017; Gwin & Lev, 2011). Some consumers are concerned with the beef they eat, wanting to know about health benefits (Cheung et al., 2017; Gwin & Lev, 2011), the origin of their food (Grunert, 2005), animal welfare (FMI & FMRPE, 2018; Gillespie et al., 2016), concerns about how their beef is produced (Birt, 2017; Gillespie et al., 2016; Yang & Woods, 2016), environmental practices (FMI & FMRPE, 2018), etc. Increased premiums on grass-fed …
Homogenization Effects Of Large Language Models On Human Creative Ideation, Barrett R. Anderson, Jash Hemant Shah, Max Kreminski
Homogenization Effects Of Large Language Models On Human Creative Ideation, Barrett R. Anderson, Jash Hemant Shah, Max Kreminski
Computer Science and Engineering
Large language models (LLMs) are now being used in a wide variety of contexts, including as creativity support tools (CSTs) intended to help their users come up with new ideas. But do LLMs actually support user creativity? We hypothesized that the use of an LLM as a CST might make the LLM’s users feel more creative, and even broaden the range of ideas suggested by each individual user, but also homogenize the ideas suggested by different users. We conducted a 36-participant comparative user study and found, in accordance with the homogenization hypothesis, that different users tended to produce less semantically …

A novel photoprobe, Tb-acetylacetone (Tb-ACAC) doped within a modified epoxy cellulose polymer immobilized with CA-125 monoclonal antibody, offers an accurate and highly selective method for early ovarian cancer (OC) diagnosis by detecting cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) in serum samples. This approach leverages quenching of the Tb-ACAC luminescence upon binding to CA-125. Characterization of the photoprobe film through UV-vis and fluorescence measurements confirmed the presence of Tb-ACAC within the polymer matrix. In aqueous solution (pH 6.8, λex = 365 nm), the characteristic emission band of Tb-ACAC at λem = 546.2 nm exhibited significant quenching upon CA-125 binding. This quenching effect enabled …

Black Holes In Time: The Effect Of Grid Radiation On The Tumor Immune Microenvironment, Rebecca A. Bekker
Black Holes In Time: The Effect Of Grid Radiation On The Tumor Immune Microenvironment, Rebecca A. Bekker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tumor-immune interactions shape a developing tumor and its tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) resulting in either well-infiltrated, immunologically inflamed ‘hot’ tumor beds, or ‘cold’ immune deserts with low levels of infiltration. The pre-treatment immune state of the TIME is associated with treatment outcome; immunologically hot tumors generally exhibit better responses to radio- and immunotherapy than cold tumors. However, radiotherapy is known to induce opposing immunological consequences, resulting in both immunostimulatory and inhibitory responses. In fact, it is thought that the radiation induced tumoricidal immune response is curtailed by subsequent applications of radiation. Thus, I hypothesize that spatially fractionated radiotherapy (SFRT), administered …

Despite the prevalence of depression in lactating mothers, there is a lack of knowledge about the excretion of antidepressants into breast milk and its potential adverse effects on infants. This creates concern, making depressed lactating mothers more likely to avoid pharmacological treatment. Clinical lactation studies are the most accurate and direct method to predict and demonstrate the excretion of antidepressants into human breast milk, and results from clinical studies can be included in drug labels to help physicians and patients make decisions on antidepressant use during lactation. However, there are limited clinical trials and studies on the pharmacokinetics of antidepressants …

Designing Dual-Responsive Drug Delivery Systems: The Role Of Phase Change Materials And Metal-Organic Frameworks., Wanying Wei, Ping Lu
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems (DDSs) offer precise control over drug release, enhancing therapeutic efficacy and minimizing side effects. This review focuses on DDSs that leverage the unique capabilities of phase change materials (PCMs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to achieve controlled drug release in response to pH and temperature changes. Specifically, this review highlights the use of a combination of lauric and stearic acids as PCMs that melt slightly above body temperature, providing a thermally responsive mechanism for drug release. Additionally, this review delves into the properties of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a stable MOF under physiological conditions that decomposes in …

Faculty Research 2024
BACKGROUND: Aging and sex are major risk factors for developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Compared to men, women experience worse neuropathological burden and cognitive decline despite living longer with the disease. Similarly, male 3xTg-AD mice, developed to model Alzheimer's disease, no longer consistently exhibit standard Alzheimer's neuropathology yet experience higher rates of mortality - providing a unique opportunity to further elucidate this dichotomy. We hypothesized that sex differences in the biological aging process yield distinct pathological and molecular Alzheimer's disease signatures in males and females, which could be harnessed for therapeutic and biomarker development.
METHODS: We aged male and female, 3xTg-AD …

Burning Torches, Eyes, And Empires: A Visual Rhetorical Analysis Of The Modern American Fascist Aesthetic, Caleb Lawler
Burning Torches, Eyes, And Empires: A Visual Rhetorical Analysis Of The Modern American Fascist Aesthetic, Caleb Lawler
Theses and Dissertations
Allegiance to the ideology of fascism is growing in the United States. Racist, misogynist, and xenophobic sentiments are prevalent throughout far-right groups in America. Despite fighting fascism worldwide in World War I and World War II, powerful American figures have and still hold strong ties to fascism. To consolidate control, fascists construct an aesthetic of themselves and their ideological opponents. Using visual rhetorical theory and Marxist theory, I will conduct three visual rhetorical analyses on three images from modern American political events to examine how the fascist aesthetic expresses itself in different situations.

Human-Machine Communication
This paper delves into what the application of authenticity to Human-Machine Communication (HMC) can teach us about authenticity and us as HMC researchers and as a com- munity. Inspired by the 2023 pre-conference “HMC: Authenticity in communicating with machines,” two central questions guide the discussion: How does HMC contribute to our understanding of authentic communication with machines? And how can the concept of authenticity contribute to our sense of self as researchers within the HMC field? Through the collaborative effort of 22 authors, the paper explores the re-conceptualization of authenticity and presents recent areas of tension that guide the HMC …
Authentic Impediments: The Influence Of Identity Threat, Cultivated Perceptions, And Personality On Robophobia, Kate K. Mays
Authentic Impediments: The Influence Of Identity Threat, Cultivated Perceptions, And Personality On Robophobia, Kate K. Mays
Human-Machine Communication
Considering possible impediments to authentic interactions with machines, this study explores contributors to robophobia from the potential dual influence of technological features and individual traits. Through a 2 x 2 x 3 online experiment, a robot’s physical human-likeness, gender, and status were manipulated and individual differences in robot beliefs and personality traits were measured. The effects of robot traits on phobia were non-significant. Overall, subjective beliefs about what robots are, cultivated by media portrayals, whether they threaten human identity, are moral, and have agency were the strongest predictors of robophobia. Those with higher internal locus of control and neuroticism, and …

What’S In A Name And/Or A Frame? Ontological Framing And Naming Of Social Actors And Social Responses, David Westerman, Michael Vosburg, Xinyue Liu, Patric R. Spence
Human-Machine Communication
Artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally a communication field. Thus, the study of how AI interacts with us is likely to be heavily driven by communication. The current study examined two things that may impact people’s perceptions of socialness of a social actor: one nonverbal (ontological frame) and one verbal (providing a name) with a 2 (human vs. robot) x 2 (named or not) experiment. Participants saw one of four videos of a study “host” crossing these conditions and responded to various perceptual measures about the socialness and task ability of that host. Overall, data were consistent with hypotheses that whether …

External And Internal Attribution In Human-Agent Interaction: Insights From Neuroscience And Virtual Reality, Nina Lauharatanahirun, Andrea Won, Angel Hsing-Chi Hwang
Human-Machine Communication
Agents are designed in the image of humans, both internally and externally. The internal systems of agents imitate the human brain, both at the levels of hardware (i.e., neuromorphic computing) and software (i.e., neural networks). Furthermore, the external appearance and behaviors of agents are designed by people and based on human data. Sometimes, these humanlike qualities of agents are purposely selected to increase their social influence over human users, and sometimes the human factors that influence perceptions of agents are hidden. Inspired by Blascovich’s “threshold of social influence’, a model designed to explain the effects of different methods of anthropomorphizing …

Chatbot Vs. Human: The Impact Of Responsive Conversational Features On Users’ Responses To Chat Advisors, Stefanie H. Klein, Sonja Utz
Human-Machine Communication
As educational organizations increasingly consider supporting or replacing human chat advisors with chatbots, it is crucial to examine if users perceive a chatbot differently from a human. Chatbots’ conversational features may signal responsiveness and thus improve user responses. To explore this, we conducted three online experiments using a study advising setting. We computed pooled data analyses because the individual study results did not provide clear support for our hypotheses. Results indicate that users prefer human agents regarding competence and intention to use but not perceived enjoyment. Responsiveness increased likability, warmth, and satisfaction. Perceptions of the interaction mediated the responsiveness effects. …

Feminist Cybernetic, Critical Race, Postcolonial, And Crip Propositions For The Theoretical Future Of Human-Machine Communication, Paula M. Gardner, Jess Rauchberg
Human-Machine Communication
The authors review theoretical trends in HMC research, as well as recent critical interventions in the HMC journal that usefully reshape and expand our research terrain. Conventional research such as positivist and quantified approaches are identified as restraining research questions and delimiting understandings of concepts including subjects, agency and interactivity. Feminist cybernetic, critical race, postcolonial and crip theoretical approaches are offered, examining how they fill research gaps in HMC, expanding content areas explored, and addressing diverse intersectional pressures, situated, and time/space dynamics that impact human machine interaction. The authors suggest these shifts are essential to expanding HMC research to address …

Machine Ex Machina: A Framework Decentering The Human In Ai Design Praxis, Cait Lackey, Zizi Papacharissi
Human-Machine Communication
Artificial intelligence (AI) design typically incorporates intelligence in a manner that is affirmatory of the superiority of human forms of intelligence. In this paper, we draw from relevant research and theory to propose a social-ecological design praxis of machine inclusivity that rejects the presumption of primacy afforded to human-centered AI. We provide new perspectives for how human-machine communication (HMC) scholarship can be synergistically combined with modern neuroscience’s integrated information theory (IIT) of consciousness. We propose an integrated theoretical framework with five design practice recommendations to guide how we might think about responsible and conscious AI environments of the future: symbiotic …

Integration Of Forage Legumes Into Maize/Elephant Grass Systems For Dairy Farming, E N. Sabiiti, J S. Mugerwa, P Ngategize, G Kyeyune
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The livestock sector contributes about 30% of the total value of agricultural production but the sector does not meet the demand for milk. Currently, there is serious migration of the rural population to urban centres and this will lead to high demand for milk and milk products. Therefore, the development of peri-urban dairy production by the small scale farmers appears a promising option to solve the problems of malnutrition, increase household incomes and improve the quality of life of these farmers. The dominant production system practised is zero-grazing using improved dairy breeds and feeding elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) …

Compatibility Of Stylosanthes Hamata And Stylosanthes Capitata In Mixed Pastures In The Subhumid Zone Of Nigeria, G Tarawali, M Peters
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The forage productivity of sole plots of Stylosanthes capitata and Stylosanthes hamata in comparison with various proportional mixtures of the two legumes and their effect on soil properties and subsequent maize yield were studied in subhumid Nigeria. Dry matter (DM) yields in the mixtures were higher than in the sole stands, with the mixtures of S. hamata and S. capitata reaching 11959 to 14822 kg/ha over a three year period. Total nitrogen and/or organic carbon concentrations in the soil following the three years of legume were higher in the mixtures than in the sole stands, and this resulted in higher …

Corn Silage In Sustainable And Conventional Systems For Finishing Beef Cattle, J P. Fontenot, V G. Allen, L L. Scott, D H. Vaughan, C A. Laub, D B. Taylor
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of the research was to compare finishing beef steers on high corn (Zea mays L.) silage diets in which the corn was produced under conventional and sustainable systems. The conventional corn forage was produced on a given area for 5 yr, using conventional practices, alternating with 5 yr of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) The sustainable system corn forage was produced in a 4-yr rotation with small grain cover crops and legumes, in which corn was grown in a given area once every 4 yr. Input of pesticides was less for the sustainable system. Steers were fed …

Forage Production In The Rice Fields During Dry Season Ryegrass, White Clover And Oats, A S. Raveloson, E Haraldseide
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In the highland of Madagascar, lack of good forage is very acute during the dry and cool season. The cultivation of temperate forage in rice fields under irrigation is practised by farmers to feed dairycattle. The main forages which are cultivated are oats (Avena sativa), Italian rye grass (Lolium multiflorum) and white clover (. Under experimental conditions rye grass has given the highest yield, but every species have their particularities, which can be useful in forage production. Three varieties of each species were studied in 1993 and 1994. Experiments were carried at five sites in the winter …
