Human Amylin As A Novel Diagnostic Marker For Hypothyroidism In Iraqi Patients, Duha Khalil Ibrahim, Layla Othman
Baghdad Science Journal
Amylin is a peptide hormone that the pancreas cell secretes along with insulin. As a neuroendocrine hormone that sends a specific signal to the brain, amylin is essential for maintaining homeostasis in the metabolism. The goal of the current study is to determine the role of Amylin as a diagnostic marker of hypothyroidism. The 120 samples were divided into two groups (80 patients with hypothyroidism) and the second group (40 healthy people). Amylin levels significantly increased compared to the control group in the group with hypothyroidism, according to the data (p < 0.001). Amylin levels raised in Iraqi patients with Hypothyroidism. Amylin a good diagnostic marker for Hypothyroidism with most accurately, sensitively cut off value 51.

Optimization Of A Nanotechnology-Based System For The Treatment Of Electroplating Wastewater, Madeleine Mary Meyer
Theses and Dissertations
To protect humans and the environment, human actions that may expose living organisms to toxic metals are heavily regulated in developed countries. The use and production of toxicants in commercial applications is tightly controlled in the United States of America by federal and state laws. Due to this fact, United States manufacturing companies are required to control the amount of regulated toxicants that leave their facilities. Toxic metals in wastewater are heavily regulated by federal and state law, with manufacturing facilities permitted individually for the concentrations of metals they are allowed to discharge via their wastewater. From previous research conducted …

Surface Acoustic Waves-Based Point-Of-Care Biosensor, Debdyuti Mandal
Surface Acoustic Waves-Based Point-Of-Care Biosensor, Debdyuti Mandal
Theses and Dissertations
A biosensor is an analytical tool consisting of biologically active material used in close conjunction with a device that converts a biochemical signal into a quantifiable electrical signal. The early detection of the disease biomarkers can enhance the increased curability of the disease, reduce healthcare costs, and finally, improve the quality of life for patients. Thus, for the following purpose, there is always a need for an effective biosensor as a diagnostic device. The biosensor typically consists of an actuator, a bio-recognition component, and a transducer that converts captured signals into a meaningful display. The bio-recognition component uses biomolecules to …

Decisions, Decisions: Dna Damage Induced Modification Of P53 And The Effect Of Modifications On P53 Differential Binding To The Dna, Savannah Gabrielle Keating
Theses and Dissertations
p53 is the most frequently mutated tumor suppressor protein in cancer. It is highly regulated, most often via post-translational modifications (PTMs). Different pathways and target genes are differentially activated by p53 and there is much left to understand how this occurs. The regulation of p53 at the post-translational level is incredibly important to its DNA damage response, and, therefore, it is understood that PTMs are often involved in the differential activation of pathways by p53. This project aimed to identify some of the types and locations of post-translational modifications on p53 in response to different modes of DNA damage with …
Accessory Eyes And Dynamic Color Change In Palaemon Vulgaris, Nicholas Raymond Steichmann
Accessory Eyes And Dynamic Color Change In Palaemon Vulgaris, Nicholas Raymond Steichmann
Theses and Dissertations
Eyes are physiologically costly organs to produce and maintain, making the development of secondary eyes intriguing. Caridean shrimp possess reflecting superposition primary eyes, but some species across fourteen families possess an additional pair of eyes called accessory eyes along the dorso-posterior margin of the primary eyes. Secondary eyes are found in lizards, lampreys, and insects, where they often function as illumination detectors. Some shrimps may use accessory eyes to signal endocrine organs in their eyestalks to alter the pigmentation of their carapace providing better camouflage through disruptive coloration. To investigate the role of accessory eyes in dynamic color change we …

Use Of Ipsc-Derived Smooth Muscle Cells To Model Physiology And Pathology, Callie S Kwartler, Jose Emiliano Esparza Pinelo
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The implementation of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) models has introduced an additional tool for identifying molecular mechanisms of disease that complement animal models. Patient-derived or CRISPR/Cas9-edited induced pluripotent stem cells differentiated into smooth muscle cells (SMCs) have been leveraged to discover novel mechanisms, screen potential therapeutic strategies, and model in vivo development. The field has evolved over almost 15 years of research using hiPSC-SMCs and has made significant strides toward overcoming initial challenges such as the lineage specificity of SMC phenotypes. However, challenges both specific (eg, the lack of specific markers to thoroughly validate hiPSC-SMCs) and general (eg, …
The Role Of Nr4a Transcription Factors In The Body And Their Effects In The Pancreatic Beta Cell, Jacob A. Herring
The Role Of Nr4a Transcription Factors In The Body And Their Effects In The Pancreatic Beta Cell, Jacob A. Herring
Theses and Dissertations
A central aspect of type 1 and type 2 diabetes is decreased functional β-cell mass which leads to systemic glucose dysregulation. Functional β-cell mass takes into account β-cell insulin secretion, β-cell proliferation, and β-cell survival. Several treatments are currently used to help maintain glucose levels in individuals with diabetes. However, cures for these diseases are not available due to inability to expand functional β-cell mass. Transcription factors control expression of target genes critical for various functions, and transcription factors that control β-cell function, proliferation and survival play a significant role in β-cell development and function. A more thorough examination of …

Of Light And Shadows: Buddhism, Cinema, And The Question Of Diffused Religion In Modern China, Teng-Kuan Ng
Of Light And Shadows: Buddhism, Cinema, And The Question Of Diffused Religion In Modern China, Teng-Kuan Ng
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
While the scholarship on premodern Chinese Buddhism has explored the tradition’s rich diffusion throughout various realms of sociocultural life, the study of modern Chinese Buddhism leans heavily towards its monastic, institutional, and overtly “religious” forms. This split mirrors the logic of modern secularization, whereby religion should be rationally differentiated from the broader social fabric, institutionalized, and delimited within its own discrete functional sphere. This article rethinks the putative rupture between Chinese Buddhism’s past and present incarnations. Through the prism of cinema, a technology that arrived on Chinese shores at the same moment as the Western concept of religion, I illuminate …
Cash, Crowds, And Cooperation: The Effects Of Population Density And Resource Scarcity On Cooperation In The Dictator Game, Tan Kai Lin, Lynn, Norman P. Li, Kenneth Tan
Cash, Crowds, And Cooperation: The Effects Of Population Density And Resource Scarcity On Cooperation In The Dictator Game, Tan Kai Lin, Lynn, Norman P. Li, Kenneth Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The adaptive benefits of cooperation among humans have been widely studied. However, is being cooperative always adaptive across various combinations of ecological conditions? Existing work has focused on cultural, inter-, and intra-individual predictors of cooperation yet there is a lack of research on how an individual's ecology may come into play. In this work, we focus on the interaction of two ecological factors—population density and resource scarcity—on cooperation. Population density is often accompanied by social competition for limited resources. We hypothesise that in response to cues of high (versus low) population density, people facing resource-scarcity would adaptively lower their cooperativeness, …
Α-Synuclein Seed Amplification Technology For Parkinson's Disease And Related Synucleinopathies, Claudio Soto
Α-Synuclein Seed Amplification Technology For Parkinson's Disease And Related Synucleinopathies, Claudio Soto
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Synucleinopathies are a group of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) associated with cerebral accumulation of α-synuclein (αSyn) misfolded aggregates. At this time, there is no effective treatment to stop or slow down disease progression, which in part is due to the lack of an early and objective biochemical diagnosis. In the past 5 years, the seed amplification technology has emerged for highly sensitive identification of these diseases, even at the preclinical stage of the illness. Much research has been done in multiple laboratories to validate the efficacy and reproducibility of this assay. This article provides a comprehensive review of this technology, including …

Emerging Cell And Molecular Targets For Treating Mucus Hypersecretion In Asthma, Ana M Jaramillo, Eszter K Vladar, Fernando Holguin, Burton F Dickey, Christopher M Evans
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Mucus provides a protective barrier that is crucial for host defense in the lungs. However, excessive or abnormal mucus can have pathophysiological consequences in many pulmonary diseases, including asthma. Patients with asthma are treated with agents that relax airway smooth muscle and reduce airway inflammation, but responses are often inadequate. In part, this is due to the inability of existing therapeutic agents to directly target mucus. Accordingly, there is a critical need to better understand how mucus hypersecretion and airway plugging are affected by the epithelial cells that synthesize, secrete, and transport mucus components. This review highlights recent advances in …

BACKGROUND: A bioactive myelin basic protein (MBP) fragment, comprising MBP
METHODS: In male and female normal and post-CCI rat sciatic nerves, we assessed: (i) cholesterol precursor and metabolite levels by lipidomics; (ii) MBP
RESULTS: CCI regulated LXRα ligand and receptor levels in nerves of both sexes, with cholesterol precursors, desmosterol and 7-DHC, and oxysterol elevated in females relative to males. MBP
CONCLUSION: The injury-released bioactive MBP fragments induce pronociceptive changes by selective inactivation of nuclear transcription factors, including LXRα. By Ncoa1 sequestration, bioactive MBP fragments render LXRα function to counteract pronociceptive activity of estrogen/ESR1 in sensory neurons. This effect of …

Transfer RNA dynamics contribute to cancer development through regulation of codon-specific messenger RNA translation. Specific aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases can either promote or suppress tumourigenesis. Here we show that valine aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (VARS) is a key player in the codon-biased translation reprogramming induced by resistance to targeted (MAPK) therapy in melanoma. The proteome rewiring in patient-derived MAPK therapy-resistant melanoma is biased towards the usage of valine and coincides with the upregulation of valine cognate tRNAs and of VARS expression and activity. Strikingly, VARS knockdown re-sensitizes MAPK-therapy-resistant patient-derived melanoma in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, VARS regulates the messenger RNA translation of valine-enriched …

Gut-microbiota modulation shows promise in improving immune-checkpoint blockade (ICB) response; however, precision biomarker-driven, placebo-controlled trials are lacking. We performed a multicenter, randomized placebo-controlled, biomarker-stratified phase I trial in patients with ICB-naïve metastatic melanoma using SER-401, an orally delivered Firmicutesenriched spore formulation. Fecal microbiota signatures were characterized at baseline; patients were stratified by high versus low Ruminococcaceae abundance prior to randomization to the SER-401 arm (oral vancomycin-preconditioning/SER-401 alone/nivolumab + SER-401), versus the placebo arm [placebo antibiotic/placebo microbiome modulation (PMM)/nivolumab + PMM (NCT03817125)]. Analysis of 14 accrued patients demonstrated that treatment with SER-401 + nivolumab was safe, with an overall response rate …

We report our management of a 53-year-old female who suffered a wood planer hand-mutilating injury with significant dorsal soft tissue loss and partial metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) amputations of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. The middle finger was deconstructed for "spare parts" and a vascularized osteochondral graft was utilized to reconstruct the metacarpal articular surface of the index finger proximal phalanx, allowing the pedicled transposition of the index finger to the third metacarpal. The middle finger's distal interphalangeal joint was transplanted non-vascularly to recreate the thumb MCPJ and the elevation of a middle finger fillet flap allowed dorsal wound coverage. …

N-acetylasparate and lactate are two prominent brain metabolites closely related to mitochondrial functioning. Prior research revealing lower levels of NAA and higher levels of lactate in the cerebral cortex of patients with schizophrenia suggest possible abnormalities in the energy supply pathway necessary for brain function. Given that stress and adversity are a strong risk factor for a variety of mental health problems, including psychotic disorders, we investigated the hypothesis that stress contributes to abnormal neuroenergetics in patients with schizophrenia. To test this hypothesis, we used the Stress and Adversity Inventory (STRAIN) to comprehensively assess the lifetime stressor exposure profiles of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In this dissertation, the presented research supports the energy transition from fossil fuels to clean energy through the optimization of sizing of energy storage systems, operational strategies, and renewable energy systems considering the uncertainties in atmospheric conditions. Towards this transition, maintaining stability between generation and demand is necessary due to the increasing renewable penetration, intermittency, and uncertainty. Maintenance of the stability between renewable energy generation and load is challenging because of varying resource availabilities, demand profiles, and economic factors in any given location. Though there are several techniques employed traditionally, here in this dissertation energy storage systems and demand side …

Owens et al (2024) discuss how knowledge of both animal personality and sentience in target populations can be leveraged to enhance wildlife conservation programmes. In this commentary I expand on the distinction between these two concepts. Behavioural differences should be considered broadly across conservation programmes, not just those involving species deemed sentient.

Runx2 is a major regulator of osteoblast differentiation and function; however, the role of Runx2 in peripheral nerve repair is unclear. Here, we analyzed Runx2 expression following injury and found that it was specifically up-regulated in Schwann cells. Furthermore, using Schwann cell-specific Runx2 knockout mice, we studied peripheral nerve development and regeneration and found that multiple steps in the regeneration process following sciatic nerve injury were Runx2-dependent. Changes observed in Runx2 knockout mice include increased proliferation of Schwann cells, impaired Schwann cell migration and axonal regrowth, reduced re-myelination of axons, and a block in macrophage clearance in the late stage …

Construction activities often involve removal of topsoil and compaction of the exposed soil by heavy equipments. Such compacted soils with low organic matter can lead to low infiltration and poor vegetation establishment. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of tillage (shallow till) and compost on soil physical and biological properties in a hydroseeded lawn as a post-construction best management practice for soil compaction remediation. The experimental site received a total of four land treatments in five replicated trials and it was hydroseeded with common Bermuda grass: 1) No Tillage + Compost (NT-C), 2) No Tillage + …

The emergence of 2D materials has significantly expanded the wide range of nanomaterials with diverse applications. Notably, their high conductivity, catalytic efficiency, and hydrophobicity have fueled heightened research interests for water treatment applications. This research aimed to investigate the synthesis and characterization of MXene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites with silver nanoparticles (Ag) for enhanced catalytic activity in the decomposition of Direct Blue-24 dye. In this study, we employed well-established methods, previously documented in the literature, to prepare two distinct nanocomposites. Novel nanocomposites, namely reduced graphene oxide–silver nanoparticles (rGO–Ag) and MXene–silver nanoparticles (MXene–Ag), were synthesized using the hydrothermal and …
