The Riddle Of Religious Language, Luke Hillman Aug 2024

The Riddle Of Religious Language, Luke Hillman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The following project analyzes religious life through the lens of religious language. Motivated by ideas of Wittgenstein and Wittgensteinians, religious language is shown to be nonsensical, and yet significant. Wittgenstein connects how we understand language with how we understand life, and this connection extends to religious life. This project offers an answer to how religious language is unique by comparing religious language to riddles and the process of answering riddles. In addition, religious language becomes understandable with imagination, a relationship with the transcendent, and an understanding of the kinds of language present in religious discourse. These ideas are solidified with …

Journal of Dentomaxillofacial Science

ABSTRACT

Background: The pulp has a defense system against inflammation involving the immune system. When the surface becomes inflamed, leukocyte accumulation occurs followed by proinflammatory cytokines released. Neutrophils, the largest part of leukocytes, work surround infected areas, and phagocytize pathogens. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α), the main cytokine proinflammatory agent, provides a rapid response to infection. Application of calcium hydroxide (CH) in reversible pulpitis releases hydroxyl groups with an alkaline pH and has the potential effect to pulpal irritation and necrosis. So that a combination of medication was developed to reduce the inflammatory effect of CH. Several studies reported that haruan …

Pelvic Sucker Form And Function In Waterfall Climbing Gobies: Variation In Morphology And Adhesive Performance Can Inspire Biomimetic Innovation, Amanda Palecek Mcclung

All Dissertations

Adhesive systems have evolved in many animal lineages and have appeared multiple times among the fishes. Bioadhesion in the gobies, a group found around the world, plays a role in both station-holding and even climbing. Among the Hawaiian streams, we find four species of amphidromous gobies which must face predators as juveniles and climb streams up to hundreds of feet tall to reach adult habitats. These gobies exhibit a range of climbing and adhesive abilities that result in an elevation-dependent species stratification, in which increasingly proficient climbing species are found in streams at increasingly higher elevations. This group is therefore …
