Influences On The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Niche, Weiyuan Wang, Timothy Brown, Brian Barth
Influences On The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Niche, Weiyuan Wang, Timothy Brown, Brian Barth
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) are supported by the bone marrow microenvironment to maintain normal production of blood cells. The niche may be considered an “ecosystem” that support the function of HSCs and other supportive cells. Alterations in the bone marrow niche are commonly observed in hematologic malignancies. Here, we review recent insights into the location and the molecular and cellular components of the bone marrow niche. Moreover, we discuss how the niche interacts with HSCs to drive the pathogenesis of hematopoietic malignancies. Overall, a better understanding of the influences on the HSC niche may drive therapeutic development targeting defective and …
Drivers Of Microparticles Abundance In Freshwater Fish And Macroinvertibrates, Elizabeth Kazmierczak
Drivers Of Microparticles Abundance In Freshwater Fish And Macroinvertibrates, Elizabeth Kazmierczak
Master's Theses
Anthropogenic microparticles (MP) (i.e., particles < 5 mm) are defined as materials of manufactured origin found in the environment. They are widespread and a rapidly emerging global contaminant. MP include microplastics (< 5 mm), as well as other microfibers or particles, which can be synthetic, semi-synthetic and non-synthetic. Rivers are a critical source of plastics to oceans, and MP within rivers are retained in part though biological processes, including ingestion. MP ingestion by freshwater biota varies by proximity to point sources (e.g., wastewater treatment plants; WWTP), overall environmental concentrations, and trophic level and functional feeding groups, but few studies have examined these factors together. In our first study we examined fish collected in the North Shore Channel of the Chicago River to determine MP abundance within organisms. We then compared trophic position (i.e., δ15N) and proximity to a WWTP. With all species combined, MP concentration were not significantly different across study sites, but stable isotopes increased downstream. Considered individually, MP abundance relative to WWTP proximity varied by species, which we attributed to habitat preference and mobility. In a second project, we collected macroinvertebrates from three different watersheds in North America and compared the abundance of MP in macroinvertebrates to concentration within the environment (i.e., water column, surface, and benthic). Functional feeding groups were a significant predictor in the amount of microparticles found in macroinvertebrates. Additionally, the concentration of water column microparticles showed a positive relationship with all macroinvertebrate’s microparticle abundance. Results will aid in understanding the ecological impacts of MPs on aquatic food webs and the pathways in which they can enter.

Generations After Us (Undergoing Stress): An Exploration Of Interpersonal Violence And Loss On Psychosocial Functioning At The Parent, Child, And Family Level, Kaleigh Valencia Wilkins
Dissertations
Previous studies propose that interpersonal violence and loss, parenting, and attachment each individually contribute to child and family distress. The following studies aimed to further explore these effects across and within various generational groupings. The first study explored exposure to community violence at the parent level and at the child level in an attempt to understand how such stress impacts parents’ perceptions of family functioning in African-American and Latine families. Findings suggested that family functioning is weakened the most when both a parent and adolescent are exposed and when just a parent was exposed. The second study examined differences in …
The Effect Of Environmental Pollutants On The Spotted Turtle Gut Microbiota, Roza Gawin
The Effect Of Environmental Pollutants On The Spotted Turtle Gut Microbiota, Roza Gawin
Master's Theses
Heavy metals are a common pollutant from many industrial processes. In addition to the various diseases that these pollutants cause, they can also affect the composition and structure of the gut microbiome of many organisms which is in many cases associated with overall organism health. The effect of these pollutants on the gut microbiota of the spotted turtle is unknown. Here we characterize the gut microbiome of the spotted turtle and explore the effect of various environmental pollutants on its composition. We found significant differences in the composition of the gut microbiome based on turtle sampling location (geographic), turtle sampling …
Lactobacillus-Mediated Phage Induction And Inhibition Of Growth Of Escherichia Coli, Natalie Stegman
Lactobacillus-Mediated Phage Induction And Inhibition Of Growth Of Escherichia Coli, Natalie Stegman
Master's Theses
Bacterial species inhabit both the “healthy” and symptomatic female urinary tract. Lactobacillus species are frequently dominant members of the healthy urinary tract microbiota (urobiome), and thus have been associated with the lack of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). In contrast, colonization by Escherichia coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Prior research has found that strains of Lactobacillus can inhibit the growth of uropathogens such as E. coli as well as vaginosis-associated pathogens. Investigations into the means by which lactobacilli inhibit pathogenic growth have primarily focused on their production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lactic acid, …
Sadomasochistic Sensations: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Black Ontology, Embodiment, And Transcendence, Sam Forrey
Sadomasochistic Sensations: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Black Ontology, Embodiment, And Transcendence, Sam Forrey
Master's Theses
Over the past fifteen years, feminists have challenged the notion that sexual sadomasochism perpetuates racial and gender-based violence, and instead claim that the practice can be a powerful site to control and subvert oppression. In this thesis, I contribute to this growing discourse and argue that sensations experienced during practices of Black sexual sadomasochism and attention to the feelings and affects that arise from them can be used to mediate Black being in a violently antiblack United States. Through applications of Black feminist thought, Black anti-humanism, and phenomenology, I claim that antiblack oppression denies Black people the experience of tactile …
Reimagining The Divinity Farm As An Edible Commons, Nailah Z. Garard
Reimagining The Divinity Farm As An Edible Commons, Nailah Z. Garard
Reports
Since 2009, students have nurtured the Divinity Farm or Divfarm as a no-till regenerative agricultural system with values of Christian stewardship. The edges of the farm have communal herb and vegetable plots, native and pollinator nurseries, berry bushes and hedges, as well as fruit-tree orchards. The interior of the farm consists of personal plots stewarded by individual students, couples, or families who are either new to growing food or are looking for a place to practice their agrarian traditions. I look at how the Divfarm, a student-led community garden, maintains and disrupts private-property models as we evolve our values and …

Active immunization (vaccination) induces long-lasting immunity with memory, which takes weeks to months to develop. Passive immunization (transfer of neutralizing antibodies) provides immediate protection, yet with high cost and effects being comparatively short-lived. No currently approved adjuvants are compatible with formulations to combine active and passive immunizations, not to mention their huge disparities in administration routes and dosage. To solve this, we engineered the Fc fragment of human IgG1 into a hexamer nanoparticle and expressed its afucosylated form in Fut8−/− CHO cells, naming it “FcRider.” FcRider is highly soluble with long-term stability, easily produced at high levels equivalent to those …
Density-Dependence Inside A Marine Protected Area Increases Natural Mortality And Stunts The Growth Of A Spiny Lobster, Emma-Jade Tuffley, Simon De Lestang
Density-Dependence Inside A Marine Protected Area Increases Natural Mortality And Stunts The Growth Of A Spiny Lobster, Emma-Jade Tuffley, Simon De Lestang
Fisheries Research Articles
Sustainable fisheries management often requires the modelling of stocks under unfished conditions, when the influence of population densities on animal growth and mortality can be substantial. This can be especially true for species such as spiny rock lobster, which are very habitat specific. Using western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus) tag-recapture data from adjacent and similar fished and unfished areas, the key life history parameters of natural mortality and growth were examined and compared under different population density scenarios. In an area representative of virgin biomass levels, lobsters exhibited reduced growth rates and a substantially higher rate of natural mortality …

First Record Of The Diamond-Backed Watersnake (Nerodia Rhombifer) In Nebraska, Joseph W. Paysen, Keith Geluso, Daniel D. Fogell
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The diamond-backed Watersnake (Nerodia rhombifer) is a fairly large-bodied (≤2100g), semi-aquatic snake associated with wetlands throughout the south-central United States. Distribution of this species closely aligns with river floodplains in parts of its distribution, including the Missouri River floodplain as far north as Holt County, Missouri. Herein, we report on the first record of the Diamond-backed Watersnake in Nebraska. On May 21, 2011, Daniel D. Fogell collected a juvenile Diamond-backed Watersnake in southeastern Richardson County representing the first occurrence of the species in the state, which is adjacent to Holt County, Missouri. In extreme southeastern Nebraska, the distribution of this …
The Relationship Between The Exchange Rate And The Price Elasticity Of Demand For Some Imported Intermediate Goods In Iraq For The Period 2010-2021, Ban Khaleel Ibraheem, Manahel Mustafa Abdulhameed
The Relationship Between The Exchange Rate And The Price Elasticity Of Demand For Some Imported Intermediate Goods In Iraq For The Period 2010-2021, Ban Khaleel Ibraheem, Manahel Mustafa Abdulhameed
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
The research provides several analyses, scientific evidence, and theoretical evidence, which clarify the relationship between the exchange rate in Iraq and the import of a group of intermediate goods for the period 2010-2021, as the research problem is represented by the problems and obstacles that caused a decline in the level of local production, and which contributed to an imbalance in output. GDP, and then an imbalance in the (non-oil) trade balance within the current account of the balance of payments. The research discussed the basic concepts of the exchange rate and its determination mechanism, price elasticity, intermediate goods and …
