The Costs Of Ecosystem Disturbances, E. Wesley F. Peterson
The Costs Of Ecosystem Disturbances, E. Wesley F. Peterson
Cornhusker Economics
Presents an illustration of the interdependencies inherent in natural ecosystems. An ecosystem may be defined as: “… a single environment and every living (biotic) organism and non-living (abiotic) factor that is contained within it or characterizes it. An ecosystem embodies every aspect of a single habitat, including all interactions between its different elements” (Knapp 2020). In such interdependent systems, removal of one or more of the essential “elements” can severely disrupt the functioning of the system and such disruptions can give rise to negative impacts on the environment and human health and well-being.

During challenge of Caenorhabditis elegans with human bacterial pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis, the elicited host response can be damaging if not properly controlled. The activation of Nrf (nuclear factor erythroid-related factor)/CNC (Cap-n-collar) transcriptional regulators modulates the response by upregulating genes that neutralize damaging molecules and promote repair processes. Activation of the C. elegans Nrf ortholog, SKN-1, is tightly controlled by a myriad of regulatory mechanisms, but a central feature is an activating phosphorylation accomplished by the p38 mitogen-activated kinase (MAPK) cascade. In this work, loss of CDC-48, an AAA+ ATPase, was observed to severely compromise SKN-1 …

A Distributed Secure System For Threads Detection In Crowded Environments Based On Biometric Facial Expression, Nourhan Zayed, Hassan I. Sayed, Ghada F. El-Kabbany
Mechanical Engineering
Ensuring security in crowded areas poses a significant problem due to the dense population and the intricate task of monitoring their behaviors. This research presents a real-time security system that utilizes facial expression analysis to identify potential threats. The technology utilizes sophisticated facial recognition and emotion detection techniques to accurately recognize emotions such as wrath, fear, and anxiety. These feelings can serve as indicators of suspicious activities or potential security risks. The system utilizes a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify facial expressions and recognize objects. In addition, it integrates an SVM classifier trained on features derived from the combined …

Macrophages are pleiotropic and diverse cells that populate all tissues of the body. Besides tissue-specific resident macrophages such as alveolar macrophages, Kupffer cells, and microglia, multiple organs harbor at least two subtypes of other resident macrophages at steady state. During certain circumstances, like tissue insult, additional subtypes of macrophages are recruited to the tissue from the monocyte pool. Previously, a recruited macrophage population marked by expression of Spp1, Cd9, Gpnmb, Fabp5, and Trem2, has been described in several models of organ injury and cancer, and has been linked to fibrosis in mice and humans. Here, we show that Notch2 blockade, …

Homeostatic regulation of neuronal activity is essential for robust computation; set-points, such as firing rate, are actively stabilized to compensate for perturbations. The disruption of brain function central to neurodegenerative disease likely arises from impairments of computationally essential set-points. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of tau-mediated neurodegeneration on all known set-points in neuronal activity. We continuously tracked hippocampal neuronal activity across the lifetime of a mouse model of tauopathy. We were unable to detect effects of disease in measures of single-neuron firing activity. By contrast, as tauopathy progressed, there was disruption of network-level neuronal activity, quantified by measuring neuronal …

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by increased levels of inflammation that primarily manifests in the joints. Macrophages act as key drivers for the progression of RA, contributing to the perpetuation of chronic inflammation and dysregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1). The goal of this study was to develop a macrophage-based cell therapy for biologic drug delivery in an autoregulated manner.
METHODS: For proof-of-concept, we developed "smart" macrophages to mitigate the effects of IL-1 by delivering its inhibitor, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra). Bone marrow-derived macrophages were lentivirally transduced with a synthetic gene circuit …

Animal-borne instruments are essential research tools for ecologists and physiologists. An increasing number of studies have shown impacts of carrying a tag on behaviour and energetics, which can have implications for animal welfare and data validity. Such impacts are a result of the additional mass and/or drag loads, with the latter requiring empirical measurements or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to estimate. To quantify and effectively minimize tag impacts from drag, a novel combined empirical and CFD approach is required. Here, we demonstrate such an approach using captive phocid seals and the widely used Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) Instrumentation Group …
Evolution And Biogeographic Analysis Of The Dyssodia Genus, Serena Jeannine Blais
Evolution And Biogeographic Analysis Of The Dyssodia Genus, Serena Jeannine Blais
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Modern phylogenetics, or the study of organismal evolutionary relationships, establishes the basis of understanding needed to explore the evolution and ecology of biological systems. Knowing the past of how species arrived where they are today allows us to make inferences about what might occur in the future under different climate and geological conditions by combining geologic knowledge with phylogenetic discoveries. Dyssodia is a small, understudied genus of plants from the marigold (Tageteae) tribe of the sunflower (Asteraceae) family. The goal of this project is to use next generation sequencing techniques to better understand the relationships within the Dyssodia genus. By …

Functional Recovery In Volumetric Muscle Loss After Receiving A Minced Muscle Transplant, Zachary Rasmussen, Jake Sorensen Facsm
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Volumetric muscle loss (VML) refers to the traumatic or surgical loss of a substantial portion of skeletal muscle, which lacks the ability to regenerate naturally, leading to chronic functional deficits. Current therapeutic interventions have shown limited success in restoring both muscle structure and function, highlighting the need for novel regenerative approaches. Purpose: This study aimed to enhance muscle regeneration and functional recovery following VML injury through the use of a minced muscle transplant (MMT), designed to restore the structural and cellular components lost during the injury. Methods: Eight rats received a full-thickness, 6 mm VML injury in the left tibialis …

Body Mass & Muscle Weight Following Volumetric Muscle Loss Injuries, Kyndal Jones, Jj Payne, Matt Mangus, Jake Sorensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Volumetric muscle loss (VML) is the traumatic or surgical loss of a significant amount of skeletal muscle, resulting in decreased function and regenerative abilities. Despite the decrease in function, when one muscle is injured or removed, there is typically a compensatory response in the surrounding muscles that promote hypertrophic adaptations. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to observe how surgery impacts body mass and the weight of certain muscle groups 6 weeks after a VML injury to the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle, with particular interest in determining if a hypertrophy response occurs in surrounding muscle groups. METHODS: …

Effect Of Intranasal Insulin On Neurovascular Coupling In Healthy Young Adults, Brian Shariffi, Neil Mcmillan, Anna Gonsalves, Camila Manrique-Acevedo, Jaume Padilla, Jacqueline Limberg
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
ABSTRACT
Emerging evidence supports an essential role for insulin signaling in neurovascular coupling (NVC) – the link between neuronal activity and cerebral blood flow. In preclinical animal models, impaired insulin signaling is associated with reduced NVC, highlighting the neurogenic role of insulin. However, it remains unclear whether brain insulin stimulation can enhance NVC in humans. PURPOSE: To examine the acute effect of intranasal insulin delivery on NVC. We hypothesized intranasal insulin would augment NVC in healthy young adults. METHODS: Carotid artery blood flow (CBF, Doppler ultrasound) and middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv, transcranial Doppler ultrasound) were measured during …

Destructive Plasticity, “Surplus Of Consciousness,” And The “Monster” In True Detective, Courtney Patrick-Weber
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
The first season of HBO's cult hit True Detective introduced viewers to a southern gothic murder mystery that many will not easily forget. Since many of us focused primarily on the whodunit narrative, we may have missed the narrative of trauma simmering under the surface of the story. This narrative of trauma reveals a deeper layer to the story between Detective Rust Cohle and serial killer Errol Childress, one that also reveals our own fears regarding trauma in our lives. By applying first the nihilist philosophies of Peter Zapffe with Cohle and Catherine Malabou's concept on destructive plasticity in Childress, …

There was a 2,900% increase in Zoom meeting participants at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though employees have started to head back into the office, Zoom has retained these participants and continues to grow. The retention of Zoom, along with other video-conferencing platforms, for over 18 months suggests that it was not just a tool for the pandemic. If employees are going to be using Zoom for an extended period of time, they will become familiar with the platform.

Would you rather spend money on a designer bag or on a trip to Hawaii? According to University of Texas marketing and psychology professor Amit Kumar, “People derive more satisfaction from experiential purchases than material purchases.” Experiences carry meaning. In today’s society, people are willing to pay a significant amount of money to have a better experience. Customers are no longer satisfied with simply receiving a product or service; the process involved in receiving a product or service matters more than ever.

Most people know someone – a friend, a sibling, a schoolmate, or otherwise – who has autism, down-syndrome, Asperger’s, or is otherwise on the spectrum. These individuals likely function mostly normal, but have an especially hard time in social situations coming off as awkward, uncomfortable, or nervous. Thinking of a friend of yours in this situation, what future do you see for them? Knowing them as individuals had you thinking of cool careers that would fit their personality – an engineer, programmer, or lawyer. However, people belonging to this demographic find themselves unemployed or in low entry-level positions, such as …

In teacher education courses, it is common to teach educational psychology concepts using case studies. Many publishers provide these case studies in textbooks and/or in ancillary materials, and there are many advantages to using them. For example, an instructor does not have to spend extra time finding or writing the case studies, both of which can be very time consuming. In addition, if students have the textbook, they have immediate access. One major disadvantage, however, is that students may find themselves uninterested and disengaged with the cases, depending on the students’ interests and the cases. This paper argues that studying …

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
This article utilizes sociocultural and socio-constructivist learning theories to analyze incidents of learning, and by extension teaching, in six different popular media selections. The authors describe their shared theoretical framework and the nature of the original analyses, which were completed as part of a doctoral course assignment. Each of the six excerpts is then described and discussed employing unique theoretical perspectives. The use of popular culture as the context for examining learning and teaching provides a space untethered from traditional notions of schooling through which typically accepted assumptions about pedagogy are revealed, re-examined, and reframed.

Wetlands play a vital role in maintaining environmental health by filtering pollutants, controlling floods, and providing habitat for diverse species. These ecosystems are essential for sustaining biodiversity and regulating hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. The Red River Basin (The Red River of the South), spanning Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, is home to various types of wetlands, which provide essential habitats to an array of wildlife. However, anthropogenic pressures such as agriculture and urbanization have led to the degradation and loss of these valuable ecosystems. To counter this loss, federal programs such as the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program - Wetland Reserve Easement …

Less than 7% of the world's population live at an altitude above 1500 m. Yet, as many as 67% of medalists in the 2020 men's and women's Olympic marathon, and 100% of medalists in the 2020 men's and women's Olympic 5000 m track race may have been born or raised above this otherwise rare threshold. As a possible explanation, research spanning nearly a quarter of a century demonstrates that indigenous highlanders exhibit pulmonary adaptations distinct from their lowland counterparts. These adaptations may then promote endurance performance. Indeed, healthy indigenous highlanders often exhibit a larger aerobic exercise capacity compared to sea-level …
