Experience Of Stress And Coping Among Male Police Officers In Trinidad And Tobago, Coryse Penco
Experience Of Stress And Coping Among Male Police Officers In Trinidad And Tobago, Coryse Penco
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police officers in Trinidad and Tobago face highly stressful environments due to increasing violent crimes and threats to their lives. Organizational stress contributes to emotional exhaustion, highlighting the need for research on stress and coping among these officers. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore job-related stressors and coping strategies that male police officers in Trinidad and Tobago use to deal with their everyday job demands. Han Selye’s theory of stress and Lazarus’ transactional model of stress and coping were used as theoretical frameworks for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 male police officers from …

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are a significant cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide. The lack of a reproducible culture system hindered the study of HuNoV replication and pathogenesis for almost a half-century. This barrier was overcome with our successful cultivation of multiple HuNoV strains in human intestinal enteroids (HIEs), which has significantly advanced HuNoV research. We optimized culture media conditions and generated genetically modified HIE cultures to enhance HuNoV replication in HIEs. Building upon these achievements, we now present new insights into this culture system, which involve testing different media, unique HIE lines, and additional virus strains. HuNoV infectivity …

Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria, infects hepatocytes prior to establishing a symptomatic blood stage infection. During this liver stage development, parasites reside in a parasitophorous vacuole (PV), whose membrane acts as the critical interface between the parasite and the host cell. It is well-established that host cell autophagy-related processes significantly impact the development of Plasmodium liver stages. Expression of genes related to autophagy and lysosomal biogenesis is orchestrated by transcription factor EB (TFEB). In this study, we explored the activation of host cell TFEB in Plasmodium berghei-infected cells during the liver stage of the parasite. Our results …

Talking Back As An Act Of Resistance And Healing For Black Women Survivors Of Prostitution, Amelia Cole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The sexual abuse and prostitution of Black women is a system of oppression that has its foundation in slavery and is still embedded in the culture of the U.S. This ongoing practice of domination, racism, sexism, and class exploitation is at work daily in the lives of Black women. Some of the harsh conditions of today that limit choice and influence Black women into prostitution include poverty, lack of opportunity/education, and prior sexual, emotional, and physical abuse, which leads to a disproportionate number of women of color and girls of color who are trapped by racism and structural oppression into …
Determining The Role Of The Histone Demethylase Kdm5b In Microglial Reactivity To Ethanol, Jessica Wohlfahrt
Determining The Role Of The Histone Demethylase Kdm5b In Microglial Reactivity To Ethanol, Jessica Wohlfahrt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Through their involvement in various processes such as phagocytosis of foreign materials and damaged cellular debris, regulatory factor release, and surveillance, the macrophages of the brain, microglia, maintain homeostasis within the central nervous system. These diverse microglial functions therefore require transition to a range of phenotypic states. The epigenetic regulation of this activity, especially through trimethylation of lysine 4 on histone H3, and its regulator, lysine demethylase (KDM)5B, is an emerging research area. KDM5B has been implicated in several diseases including cancer, inflammatory disorders, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), the latter being the focus of this dissertation project. Deep proteomic …

Although various joint injuries result in post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA), differences in chondrocyte response to specific injuries, such as blunt compression or fracture, are unclear. Furthermore, the role of underlying joint inflammation, or synovitis, is often not considered. We investigated how injury mechanisms and underlying synovitis affect chondrocyte gene expression using osteochondral injury models with synovial co-culture. We hypothesized that the state of synovitis as well as the mechanism of biomechanical cartilage injury differentially alter the gene expression of chondrocytes and that these responses are regulated by the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 1 (IL-1). The mechanism of injury and level of synovial …

Circuitry may control and/or drive the brightness and/or luminance of pixels within displays. For example, an AR head-mounted display (HMD) may include and/or represent circuitry, such as a driver unit, that controls and/or drives the brightness and/or luminance of a perceptual quantizer (PQ) and/or gamma display. In one example, the circuitry may implement 8-bit counters to control the brightness and/or luminance of pixels within the PQ or gamma display. Unfortunately, such 8-bit counters may fail to enable the display to accurately reproduce perceptual brightness and/or luminance consistent with and/or under the Barten sensitivity curve and/or model. In another example, the …

Comparative Efficacy And Safety Of Transcatheter Versus Mitral-Valve Surgery In Elderly Patients With Mitral Regurgitation: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Saif Almuzainy, Mohamed Lemine, Rayan Aljubeh, Sami Alsalem
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives: Mitral valve surgery is the reference treatment for severe symptomatic mitral regurgitation (MR). Percutaneous mitral valve interventions, such as the MitraClip procedure, offer an alternative, particularly for high-risk patients. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the safety and effectiveness of transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) compared to surgical mitral valve repair or replacement (SMVR) in elderly patients with mitral regurgitation. Methods: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Ovid, EBSCO, and ProQuest through July 2024. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials and observational comparative studies of TMVR versus SMVR for patients with MR, reporting outcomes such as …

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
If Philippine cinema, during a time of dictatorial duress, has indeed gathered into its fold allegories of a certain social texture, then contemporary critique must also provide a rather thick notion of allegory itself, in order to describe the quality of the metonymic membranes which make possible the emergence of substance through eloquent surface. In this essay, I propose a critical elaboration of Laura Mulvey’s category “carapace,” and a subtle yet significant declension of surface, “diaphane,” in an attempt to intervene in the understanding of film as a plastic form with the tensile capacity to surpass its flatness by choosing …
Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele
Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
That the ideal way to communicate and reach understanding is by speaking the same language, is a widespread view: it is rarely questioned in debates concerning language, (intercultural) communication, and interpretation. I shall argue that Hans-Georg Gadamer, too, suffers from this common language “syndrome.” Donald Davidson is one of the few philosophers who explicitly uttered qualms about the necessity of a common language. Davidson critiques Gadamer’s common language idea, and rightly claims that a common language is not needed for communication and understanding. I show that Davidson has been unable to develop this insight fruitfully and underestimates the importance of …

“What Kind Of Teacher Are You?”: Critical Communication Pedagogy In Abbott Elementary, India Hagen-Gates
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
In December 2021, Abbott Elementary debuted their first episode, following a cast of diverse teachers at an underfunded elementary school in Philadelphia. While there is previous research on the importance of tv representation and pedagogical practices in the media, this show presents a unique opportunity for analysis. Using Fassett and Warren’s (2007) commitments of Critical Communication Pedagogy as my main theoretical guide, I argue that Abbott Elementary showcases the ongoing process to improve pedagogy, specifically in the commitments of culture as central, language as constitutive, and reflexivity as essential.

Becoming The Protagonist: Finding Oneself Through Studying Abroad In Japan, Clara N. Barnhardt
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
International experiences, including studying abroad, can impact individuals’ identities in many ways. What is this like in the case of an anime fan studying abroad in Japan for six weeks? What are potential ways in which anime fans can be transformed? Throughout this autoethnography, I make sense of the ways in which I personally navigated and was transformed by studying abroad in Japan. It is my hope that making sense of my journey will allow other anime fans traveling to Japan to make sense of their own adventures.
The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary
The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Resilience as a trope is often associated with the neoliberal ideal of individualized personal success, an ideal that is frequently used to deny the existence of structural oppression (Phipps, 2014). Analyzing cultural artefacts, however, can offer a reappraisal of how publics understand resilience in relation to neoliberal economic policy. In this paper, I analyze a 1993 film by Guillermo del Toro, titled Cronos, to understand how resilience can be presented as familial rather than individual, as well as the trickiness of using film to critique neoliberalism while under the influence of state agencies. In examining Cronos, I argue that …

Prevalence And Pathology Of Endoparasitic Infections Of Rock Pigeons (Columba Livia) In Taiwan, Chih-Li Yu, Yen-Li Huang
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Pigeon racing is popular in Taiwan, but most lofts are located on residential roofs or in attics, which means pigeons could potentially spread parasites to humans. It is necessary to investigate the prevalence and diversity of endoparasitic infections in pigeons. This study investigated endoparasitic infections in 301 pigeons (both loft-kept racing and feral pigeons) in Taiwan using gross and histopathological examinations. The identified endoparasites included Trichomonas spp. (30.2%, 91/301); Ascaridia spp. (22.3%, 67/301); Haemoproteus spp. (20.6%, 62/301); Eimeria spp. (11.0%, 33/301); Capillaria spp. (7.3%, 22/301); Hexamita spp. (6.0%, 18/301); Raillietina spp. (4.7%, 14/301); Heterakis spp. (2%, 6/301); and Dispharynx sp., …
