Disease And Disparities: The Structural Violence In The Time Of Our Covidized Lives, Aurelio S. Agcaoili Nov 2024

Disease And Disparities: The Structural Violence In The Time Of Our Covidized Lives, Aurelio S. Agcaoili

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The paper argues that when a country’s social structures— political, economic, and cultural—are arranged such that the arrangement results in a dichotomy between the class of the privileged and the class of the less privileged, any act of addressing a pandemic such as the COVID-19 will always end up in another pandemic: the pandemic of government neglect and ineptitude. There is only one way out in ensuring that this double pandemic can be addressed: a return to the foundations of a good life for all—a democracy that secures that the good of collective life is for all.

Risk Factors Of Covid-19 Infection Among Health Workers Post-Vaccination In Jakarta, Rahmat Saputra, Nurhayati Adnan Prihartono, Mondastri Korib Sudaryo, Renti Mahkota, Yeni Devita, Ni Wayan Deisy Arisanti Nov 2024

Risk Factors Of Covid-19 Infection Among Health Workers Post-Vaccination In Jakarta, Rahmat Saputra, Nurhayati Adnan Prihartono, Mondastri Korib Sudaryo, Renti Mahkota, Yeni Devita, Ni Wayan Deisy Arisanti

Kesmas

One of the best approaches to stop the COVID-19 pandemic is vaccination. In Indonesia, the first round of vaccinations was prioritized for health workers on January 14, 2021 (first dose) and March 1, 2021 (second dose). However, some health workers who have been vaccinated were found to be reinfected after receiving the second dose. This cross-sectional study examined the risk factors for COVID-19 infection among health workers after vaccination using secondary and primary data. The data analysis was carried out in univariate (examining the frequency distribution and proportion of independent variables), bivariate (Chi-square test to explore the relationship between independent …

Insecta Mundi

A small population of Entypus ochrocerus Dahlbom, a predominantly Greater Antilles spider wasp (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae), is reported for the first time from the continental United States based on photographs and associated information from iNaturalist.org. The species was initially misidentified online as E. unifasciatus unifasciatus (Say) or Entypus sp. However, Entypus u. unifasciatus individuals from east of the 100th Meridian in the United States typically have melanochromatic (dark) wings with a subapical xanthochromatic (orange-amber) patch. Entypus ochrocerus from Miami-Dade County, Florida is differentiated from E. u. unifasciatus by its black body with dark greenish blue reflections …

Articles

A thermoregulatory decline occurs with age due to changes in muscle mass, vasoconstriction, and metabolism that lowers core body temperature (Tc). Although lower Tc is a biomarker of successful aging, we have previously shown this worsens cognitive performance in the APP/PS1 mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We hypothesized that elevating Tc with thermotherapy would improve metabolism and cognition in APP/PS1 mice. From 6-12 months of age, male and female APP/PS1 and C57BL/6 mice were chronically housed at 23 or 30°C. At 12 months of age, mice were assayed for insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and spatial cognition. Plasma, hippocampal, and …

Akt Kinases As Therapeutic Targets, Dalal Hassan, Craig Menges, Joseph Testa, Alfonso Bellacosa Nov 2024

Akt Kinases As Therapeutic Targets, Dalal Hassan, Craig Menges, Joseph Testa, Alfonso Bellacosa

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

AKT, or protein kinase B, is a central node of the PI3K signaling pathway that is pivotal for a range of normal cellular physiologies that also underlie several pathological conditions, including inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, overgrowth syndromes, and neoplastic transformation. These pathologies, notably cancer, arise if either the activity of AKT or its positive or negative upstream or downstream regulators or effectors goes unchecked, superimposed on by its intersection with a slew of other pathways. Targeting the PI3K/AKT pathway is, therefore, a prudent countermeasure. AKT inhibitors have been tested in many clinical trials, primarily in combination with other drugs. While …

Accumbal Plasticity And Associated Behavioral Adaptations In The Spared Nerve Injury Model Of Chronic Neuropathic Pain, Yu-Hsuan Chang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chronic pain is a debilitating neurological disorder that affects hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide. It is associated with cognitive symptoms such as cognitive inflexibility, which is defined as the inability to adaptively update behavior in response to changing environmental conditions. To date, there are no effective treatments for these symptoms, even though they substantially contribute to the decreased quality of life of chronic pain patients and are associated with reduced efficacy of pain management strategies. Therefore, understanding the neural circuit adaptations that drive cognitive symptoms of chronic pain, like cognitive inflexibility, is essential for improving existing treatments for this …

Home Births Among Ethnic Minority Communities In Bokeo Province, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Jukkrit Wungrath, Rungrasami Sriwongphan, Krissana Kapheak, Wanchalerm Ritthimon

Kesmas

Home births among ethnic minorities in developing countries pose significant risks to maternal and neonatal health. In Lao PDR, the government has taken steps to manage home births through training traditional birth attendants, improving transportation, and establishing referral systems. However, high home birth rates in regions like Bokeo remain concerning. This review emphasized the need for more skilled birth attendants and better access to emergency obstetric care in rural, ethnic minority areas. This review used 40 articles published between 2000 and 2023 and highlighted gaps in research regarding healthcare access, cultural practices, socioeconomic barriers, and the role of traditional birth …

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Fentanyl On Post-Mortem Interval From A Decomposition And Biochemical Perspective, Kaylene Mcdonald Nov 2024

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Fentanyl On Post-Mortem Interval From A Decomposition And Biochemical Perspective, Kaylene Mcdonald

Senior Honors Theses

In the realm of body decomposition, bodies undergo a plethora of different metabolic and chemical changes. The human body follows a very consistent pattern and predictable time frame, with the exclusion of extenuating circumstances. The presence of fentanyl at the time of death provides the possibility of changes in decomposition rates, potentially skewing the time of death estimations. This research analyzes the varying decompositional stages of a body and their subsequent close relations with activity in the environment around it, specifically investigating the impacts of fentanyl on those surroundings and postmortem interval estimation determinations. This research found evidence that fentanyl …

Regeneration: A Collaborative Writing, Making, And Moving Inquiry, Melissa Dunlop, Alys Mendus, Mark Price, Karen Abadie, Laurinda Brown, Carol Laidler, Marian Liebmann, Marina Malthouse, Grace Mendus

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Nine members of the Collaborative Artful Narrative Inquiry network (CANI-net) gathered to explore a regenerative intention. This article tracks our interplay of writing, making, and moving together and questions that arose: How do we go about regenerating? Can we find openings to processes happening outside awareness? How does the refrain “now let’s write” act in relation to the un/intention of regeneration? Is our material, embodied co-presence regenerative? Answers were intimated through listening, touching hands, printmaking, and sculpting clay; in letting things be said and unsaid, writing as response, in making shapes and animal sounds, and dancing Zorba’s Dance.

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Down-regulation of BCL11A protein reverses the fetal (HbF, α2γ2) to adult (HbA, α2β2) hemoglobin switch and is exploited in gene-based therapy for hemoglobin disorders. Due to reliance on ex vivo cell manipulation and marrow transplant, such therapies cannot lessen disease burden. To develop novel small molecule approaches, we interrogated the state of BCL11A protein in erythroid cells. We report that tetramer formation mediated by a single zinc-finger (ZnF0) is required for production of steady-state protein. Beyond its role in protein stability, the tetramer state is necessary for γ-globin gene repression, as an engineered monomer fails to engage a critical corepressor …

The Significance Of Cannibalism, Panic, And Sanctuary In The Interactions Between Prey And Predator With A Stage Structure, Ahmed Sami Abdulghafour, Raid Kamel Naji Nov 2024

The Significance Of Cannibalism, Panic, And Sanctuary In The Interactions Between Prey And Predator With A Stage Structure, Ahmed Sami Abdulghafour, Raid Kamel Naji

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

This paper analyzes a novel prey-predator model that takes into account the predator's stage structure, cannibalism within the predator population, panicky behavior, and the existence of a sanctuary where the prey might hide from the predator. The Holling type II functional response is used in the predation process. The behavior of the identified fixed points of the proposed system has been closely analyzed. The analysis focuses on the local stability and potential bifurcations that could happen close to the system's fixed points. The Lyapunov function approach is used to investigate the fixed-point stability zone globally. Numerical simulations were run to …

Soil Biogeography And Community Assembly In Polar Regions, Jesse Jorna Nov 2024

Soil Biogeography And Community Assembly In Polar Regions, Jesse Jorna

Theses and Dissertations

The polar regions provide community ecologists with natural microcosms, that include reduced species diversity, steep environmental gradients and limited human perturbance. Soil biodiversity in the polar regions is poorly understood, and the driving forces behind community compositions can range in scale from glacial forces 20,000 years ago to the impact of a researcher's footstep. Here, we present the results of an investigation of the driving factors behind biodiversity in Arctic and Antarctic soils, with specific attention to the role of community assembly processes. We suggest a framework for investigating the effects of inter-bacterial community processes like facilitation and argue for …
