E. San Juan, Jr.: Remembering The Struggles During Martial Law, Elmer A. Ordoñez Dec 2024

E. San Juan, Jr.: Remembering The Struggles During Martial Law, Elmer A. Ordoñez

Kritika Kultura

Elmer A. Ordoñez recalls his encounters with E. San Juan, Jr., beginning with his receipt of a manuscript in the early 1970s that he later published as the director of the University of the Philippines Press: Carlos Bulosan and the Imagination of the Class Struggle by San Juan. For Ordoñez, this book marked a turning point in the intellectual trajectory of San Juan who was his former student. Moreover, Ordoñez situates the early and middle aspects of San Juan’s growth as an intellectual and activistin the local and international contexts that have come to shape San Juan’s life. Of particular …

Lessons From E. San Juan, Jr. On Resistance, Diversity, And Anti-Materialism In The Academy, Rachel Peterson, Joel Wendland Dec 2024

Lessons From E. San Juan, Jr. On Resistance, Diversity, And Anti-Materialism In The Academy, Rachel Peterson, Joel Wendland

Kritika Kultura

Throughout his astoundingly productive career, San Juan has unmasked how the intelligentsia becomes imbricated in the abuses of capitalism, colonialism and racism, and demands that those in the privileged space of the academy acknowledge and address ever-increasing inequality. He has dissected the theories and methodologies deployed in pedagogy and scholarship at different historical moments and has shown how issues of class, political economy, and (internal and international) colonialism become abstract and immaterial in the hands of intellectuals, even those who proclaim alliance with the wretched of the earth.

Migration, Imagination, And Transformation: Revisiting E. San Juan’S Carlos Bulosan And The Imagination Of The Class Struggle, Michael D. Pante, Leo Angelo Nery

Kritika Kultura

This paper argues that an examination of the historiographical trajectory of scholarly works on the Philippine peasantry, particularly peasants in Luzon provinces, and transnational migration can deepen our understanding of Carlos Bulosan’s life and works. Using E. San Juan, Jr.’s Carlos Bulosan and the Imagination of the Class Struggle as the analytic focus in pursuing the argument, we aim to contextualize Bulosan’s life story within the larger framework of the history of Philippine peasant movements and draw connections between his life in America and the contemporary experience of Filipino migrants. To reach these objectives, we need to understand San Juan’s …

Alaalang Pampanitikan: Si Epifanio San Juan, Jr. Sa Panitikang Filipino, Efren R. Abueg

Kritika Kultura

In an essay that he calls literary memory, the acclaimed writer in Filipino Efren Abueg provides a critical biography of E. San Juan, Jr. It begins with San Juan’s coming of age at Jose Abad Santos where he became the editor-in-chief of the school paper, and explores the print culture of the period along the way. Then it transitions into the college years of San Juan in the age of decolonization at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, during which he came under the tutelage of Elmer Ordoñez, Francisco Arcellana, and NVM Gonzales, among others. Abueg, in particular, pays attention to …

From “Game-Like Realism” To The “Imagination-Oriented Aesthetic”: Reconsidering Bourdieu’S Contribution To Fan Studies In The Light Of Japanese Manga And Otaku Theory, Zoltan Kacsuk Dec 2024

From “Game-Like Realism” To The “Imagination-Oriented Aesthetic”: Reconsidering Bourdieu’S Contribution To Fan Studies In The Light Of Japanese Manga And Otaku Theory, Zoltan Kacsuk

Kritika Kultura

Following Casey Brienza’s call for drawing on Japanese “otaku theory” in order to further comics studies, the present article demonstrates how the wider interrelated discourse around anime, manga, and otaku can be productively related to fields such as Western fan studies. Focusing on Azuma Hiroki’s book The Birth of Game-like Realism this paper both highlights the theoretical richness of works which have yet to be translated into English, and emphasizes the importance of manga research – in this case Itō Gō’s book Tezuka is Dead – beyond the confines of manga/comics studies. Building on a novel reading of Azuma’s framework …

Re-Viewing Thomas Lamarre’S The Anime Machine After Hayao Miyazaki’S The Wind Rises: On The Critical Potential Of Anime, Selen Çalık Dec 2024

Re-Viewing Thomas Lamarre’S The Anime Machine After Hayao Miyazaki’S The Wind Rises: On The Critical Potential Of Anime, Selen Çalık

Kritika Kultura

This article aims to demonstrate how exactly Thomas Lamarre reads movement, plot, and characters in The Anime Machine (2009), as defined to an extent, yet not completely determined by the concept of the animetic machine. Mimicking the first part of Lamarre’s book, it approaches Miyazaki’s last work, The Wind Rises (Kaze tachinu, 2013). What Lamarre sees in Miyazaki’s manga eiga is a new way of gaining “a free relation to technology” as idealized by Heideggerian philosophy, but, of course, “in animation” (Lamarre 62). This free, critical relation seems to be most noticeably depicted in Nausicaä of the Valley of the …

Communicating Emotions: How Commercial Manga For Women Approaches 3.11, Olga Antononoka Dec 2024

Communicating Emotions: How Commercial Manga For Women Approaches 3.11, Olga Antononoka

Kritika Kultura

Hagio Moto’s manga series Nanohana was one of the first attempts in female-oriented mainstream manga to depict the 3.11 tragedy and its aftermath. However, it appears to lack in overt social critique, providing instead a highly emotional story about overcoming hardship and maturing. Via a close-reading of Nanohana this article analyzes the modus operandi of social critique in popular manga highlighting the visual conventions of female manga genres and thereby going beyond the plotlines, which have been at the center of critical attention so far. The article contrasts the initial one-shot “Nanohana,” which directly addresses 3.11, with the subsequent three …

Education Of Today Is The Security Of Tomorrow!: Strengthening The Capacities To Create Secure Environments With Cultural Education, Raphael Vergin, Hannah Reich Phd Dec 2024

Education Of Today Is The Security Of Tomorrow!: Strengthening The Capacities To Create Secure Environments With Cultural Education, Raphael Vergin, Hannah Reich Phd

Kritika Kultura

Human security as a people’s perspective on security with a focus on human well-being and relationship-building offers promising alternative concepts to state-centered and structure- focused security strategies. Security is more than increasing weapons, fences and survey cameras. To our understanding, it is something else and involves entirely different mindsets. It demands a people’s perspective on security in which citizenship includes the capacity to create secure surroundings. People can be supported to “learn” security and to focus on their capacities. The subjective dimensions of security, including a person’s emotional management, can be trained. This is why we argue that three dimensions …

Introduction: Manga Beyond Critique?, Jaqueline Berndt Dec 2024

Introduction: Manga Beyond Critique?, Jaqueline Berndt

Kritika Kultura

This introduction to the special issue “Manga Culture and Critique” takes as its point of departure a stark contrast to English-language comics discourse, namely that in contemporary Japan manga is only rarely expected to serve as a means of social critique, at least insofar as the by now predominant notion is concerned, i.e. manga as entertaining graphic narratives first serialized in magazines, inviting readers’ affective investment and fans’ participation in more ways than reading. The special-issue articles, however, consider more notions of manga: single-image satirical cartoons on the one pole, “AMO (anime-manga-otaku) culture” on the other. And even if focusing …

From Leonardo To Picasso (1939–1953): The Masters Who Marked War And Peace In Milan, Silvia Colombo

Kritika Kultura

This paper intends to highlight the role the arts and the exhibition system had during WWII period in Milan—a strategic centre in the fields of politics, culture and economics. At that time we can notice two main occurrences: the Leonardo exhibition at Palazzo dell’Arte in 1939, and the Picasso solo show at Palazzo Reale in 1953. In the beginning of 1939 the war was more than a threat but, despite that, the fascist regime decided to organize a temporary exhibition dedicated to Leonardo with clear propaganda purposes. After WWII and the defeat of the regime, the public administration of the …

Administering Tolfenamic Acid To Gilts And Sows Before Artificial Insemination Did Not Improve Litter Size But Tended To Reduce Post-Service Serum Prostaglandin F2Α Levels, Pachara Pearodwong, Nithitad Jiebna, Padet Tummaruk Dec 2024

Administering Tolfenamic Acid To Gilts And Sows Before Artificial Insemination Did Not Improve Litter Size But Tended To Reduce Post-Service Serum Prostaglandin F2Α Levels, Pachara Pearodwong, Nithitad Jiebna, Padet Tummaruk

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study examined the impact of intramuscular administration of tolfenamic acid 10 min before artificial insemination (AI) on serum PGF2α levels and reproductive performance in gilts and sows. In Experiment I, 20 gilts were divided into two groups: control (n = 10) and treatment (n = 10). Serum samples were collected 30 min before and after insemination to measure PGF2α levels. In Experiment II, 175 gilts and sows were divided into control (25 gilts and 56 sows) and treatment (16 gilts and 78 sows) groups. In both experiments, the treatment group received an intramuscular injection of 2 mg/kg tolfenamic acid …

Japan's Soft Power And "Grand Fictions" In Global Venues: Japanese Pop Culture Franchises And Fictionality-Based Tactics, Marco Pellitteri Dec 2024

Japan's Soft Power And "Grand Fictions" In Global Venues: Japanese Pop Culture Franchises And Fictionality-Based Tactics, Marco Pellitteri

Kritika Kultura

This article discusses the notion of soft power and how Japan’s government has recently made use of imaginary characters from “manga” and “anime” to promote the country’s appeal. I focus on the official video clip for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, first released in 2016. This montage features not only Japan’s Prime Minister as well as Japanese athletes and show-business celebrities, but also fictional characters. On the one hand, this cast assists in creating a display of “official Japaneseness” as a presentation strategy for the 2020 Olympics host country, deploying Shinzō Abe as a testimonial. On the other hand, while fiction …

How Industrial Policies Shaped The Globalization Of The Chinese Film Industry Since The 1990s, Xiaolan Zhou Dec 2024

How Industrial Policies Shaped The Globalization Of The Chinese Film Industry Since The 1990s, Xiaolan Zhou

Kritika Kultura

The Chinese film industry experienced more than twenty years of reform that has brought undeniable success, however, it has been confronted by a dilemma in the context of globalization: The “coming in” of foreign films and investments is becoming increasingly convenient and profitable, whereas the “going out” of domestic films stays in a stagnant or even retrogressive situation. This issue results from an essential factor: the government’s intervention, as well as its policies. This article endeavors to study the duality of the government’s role in the film industry. First, it generally creates a favorable economic environment, which coincides with Stiglitz’s …

Fan Entrepreneurship: Fandom, Agency, And The Marketing Of Hallyu In Israel, Nissim Otmazgin, Irina Lyan

Kritika Kultura

While the overall majority of Hallyu research has looked at the way fans consume Korean popular culture and how it influences their identity, this paper focuses on the way these fans serve as effective agents for marketing Hallyu and how their fandom empowers them to explore new business and social opportunities. Focusing on what we call “fan entrepreneurship,” this paper examines the evolvement of fan communities in Israel and their role as cultural agents transcending different cultural and social contexts. More specifically, it analyzes their role as promoters, distributers, and entrepreneurs of Hallyu. To examine fan entrepreneurship in action, we …

Deepening Conditions Of Precarity In The Korean Game Industry And Collaborative Strategies To Overcome Constraints, Sangkyu Lee Dec 2024

Deepening Conditions Of Precarity In The Korean Game Industry And Collaborative Strategies To Overcome Constraints, Sangkyu Lee

Kritika Kultura

This paper examines how Korean game developers have been experiencing deepening conditions of precarity and makes a few suggestions regarding how they could overcome their structural limitations. Despite the remarkable growth in the Korean game industry, many underlying problems overshadow its success, such as labor exploitation, low wages, employment instability, and alienated labor. This paper uses a qualitative methodology to investigate the implications of the game industry market’s transition from PC online to the mobile game platform since the 2010s, which contributed to the industry’s deteriorating working condition and production system. Given this context, this study explores how the game …

The Next Growth Strategy For Hallyu: A Comparative Analysis Of Global Entertainment Firms, Yeon W. Lee, Kyuchan Kim Dec 2024

The Next Growth Strategy For Hallyu: A Comparative Analysis Of Global Entertainment Firms, Yeon W. Lee, Kyuchan Kim

Kritika Kultura

Previous policy approaches on Hallyu have been focused on the role of government engagement, particularly in fostering diversity and equal business opportunities for small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs). However, a more strategic approach to the cultural industries should be implemented by carefully examining the role of the private sector, particularly the role of large enterprises (LEs). This is important because LEs have an overarching and fundamentally differentiated role in increasing the size of industry through their expansive value-creating activities and diversified business areas. This study focuses on the complementary roles of SMEs and LEs in facilitating the growth of Hallyu by bringing …

Hallyuwood: Korea's Comparative Advantage In The Global Motion Picture Industry, Sébastien Miroudot Dec 2024

Hallyuwood: Korea's Comparative Advantage In The Global Motion Picture Industry, Sébastien Miroudot

Kritika Kultura

After Hollywood and Bollywood, the recent success of the Korean motion picture industry has been described as the rise of “Hallyuwood,” suggesting that Korea has become the third pillar of the global motion picture industry. In order to explain the emergence of Hallyuwood, this paper uses a global value chain (GVC) approach and highlights some of the economic determinants in the internationalization of the Korean movie industry. Using input-output data and firm-level information, the paper first analyzes the position of Korea in the motion picture GVC and assesses the ways in which the movie production has become more global. The …

The Female Monster: The Pre-Catholic Manifestation As A Response To Modern Anxiety In Selected Stories By Nick Joaquin, Tyra Delos Reyes, Xavier Selman Dec 2024

The Female Monster: The Pre-Catholic Manifestation As A Response To Modern Anxiety In Selected Stories By Nick Joaquin, Tyra Delos Reyes, Xavier Selman

Kritika Kultura

Scholarship on the writings of Nick Joaquin have mostly concerned themselves with either their postcolonial resonances or the gender politics abound in the text. Tropical Gothic (1972) is widely read as an ambiguous approach toward feminism because of the depiction of the female as monstrous which has been argued to problematize its feminist possibilities, whether this depiction empowers or suppresses women in the texts. Examining the criticism of Marie Arong, Philip Holden, and Epifanio San Juan Jr., this paper asserts how existing notions of gender are able to produce a more nuanced reading of Nick Joaquin’s selected stories, specifically “Summer …

When She Started Acting Queer: A Queer Gothic Reading Of Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Miguel Antonio N. Lizada Dec 2024

When She Started Acting Queer: A Queer Gothic Reading Of Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Miguel Antonio N. Lizada

Kritika Kultura

This essay reads Nick Joaquin’s The Woman Who Had Two Navels using the critical templates gleaned from gothic studies and queer theory. The essay explores the idea of doubling and monstrosity and demonstrates how these two gothic tropes are deployed to activate the queer potential found in the character of Connie Escobar. The essay builds on an existing interpretation of the novel—that the narrative is an account of regeneration—and extends this by arguing that this narrative of transformation is mobilized precisely by a rejection of heteropatriarchal narratives encoded in the novel’s postcolonial world, mobilized in a particular way by the …

Cultural Capital And The Tale Of Two Lu Xuns, Yang Ke Dec 2024

Cultural Capital And The Tale Of Two Lu Xuns, Yang Ke

Kritika Kultura

Historically, Lu Xun’s canonical status in China had been used for purposes other than strictly or specifically “literary,” although the aesthetic merits of his works remain indisputable even from the broader perspective of World Literature today. Nonetheless, such uses, which this study refers to as “cultural capital,” have brought about certain inconsistencies and contradictions in the evaluation of his works. In order to survey the complex and shifting history of reception to Lu Xun’s works, this paper attempts to explain the contextual determinations of his canonicity from the rise of vernacular literature in 1917 in China and his use of …

Transforming Theater For The Oppressed: Community Theater As Urban Poor Discourse In Sining Kadamay's Gapok, Michael D. Pante, Leo Angelo Nery Dec 2024

Transforming Theater For The Oppressed: Community Theater As Urban Poor Discourse In Sining Kadamay's Gapok, Michael D. Pante, Leo Angelo Nery

Kritika Kultura

In March 2017, the issue of urban poor housing was exposed on a national scale when thousands of members of the urban poor group Kadamay forcibly occupied nearly 6,000 abandoned housing units meant for members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police in Pandi, Bulacan. Kadamay members were accused of being mendicant anarchists by their critics, while their supporters lauded their determination in demanding, and winning, their rights to housing. While the issue polarized Philippine society, it is evident that the Occupy Pandi movement revitalized urban poor discourse, and brought back to the fore the …

We The Divided: Partitions Of Performance In The Ceramic State, Alan Read Dec 2024

We The Divided: Partitions Of Performance In The Ceramic State, Alan Read

Kritika Kultura

The common association between theater and community is here inverted to explore the relationship between theatrical practice and immunity, or “affects of adjustment” between spectator and event. Drawing upon Roberto Esposito’s figuring of relations between community and immunity, on Jacques Ranciere’s propositions of the “emancipated spectator” and the part of those who have no part,” and Gerald Raunig’s conception of “Division” from his work on the Dividuum (2016), this essay examines a sequence of case studies central to the author’s own practiced experiences: Rotherhithe Theatre Workshop in the 1980s, Transhumance in the 1990s, and the Performance Biennial Athens in 2016. …

Star-Studded Stingers: Fluorescent Sensilla On The Scorpion Aculeus (Arachnida: Scorpiones), Graeme Lowe Dec 2024

Star-Studded Stingers: Fluorescent Sensilla On The Scorpion Aculeus (Arachnida: Scorpiones), Graeme Lowe

Euscorpius

The aculeus of the scorpion telson was studied by UV fluorescence microscopy. Numerous brightly fluorescent punctae were observed on the non-fluorescent distal aculeus, including the tip region. The punctae were identified as aculear sensilla coeloconica (ASC), and were connected to fluorescent canals running through the cuticle. ASC were present in both sexes, and in adults and immatures as early as the second juvenile instar, but were absent from the first instar. The distal aculeus was found to be encased in a thick, non-fluorescent dark exocuticle (DX), covering an underlying thin, fluorescent hyaline exocuticle (HX). Fluorescent ASC were recorded from 183 …
