Labor Law, Ownership, And The Firm, Sanjukta Paul Jan 2025

Labor Law, Ownership, And The Firm, Sanjukta Paul

Articles

In shaping economic coordination within and across both firms and markets, one significant action of law is to allocate privileges or rights between people or groups of people. These include the right to coordinate with other people or groups of people in particular ways regarding core economic decisions-a type of activity that is not always or in all circumstances legally permissible. An area that makes this more general action of law especially concrete is antitrust or competition law, with its collection of "exemptions." Antitrust's formal and informal exemptions quite directly allocate economic coordination rights, for particular kinds of activity, and …

The New Substantive Due Process, Leah M. Litman Jan 2025

The New Substantive Due Process, Leah M. Litman

Articles

After the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, commentators made much about the possible demise of substantive due process—the idea that the Constitution safeguards certain substantive liberties that are not specifically or explicitly spelled out in the Constitution. Judges and scholars are debating which substantive due process decisions are next on the chopping block and whether the entire domain of substantive due process is in jeopardy. But a curious thing happened as the Court scaled back and openly questioned the traditional individual-rights line of substantive due process: Rather than eliminating it entirely, the Court seems to have transposed it elsewhere. …

Despite the efficacy of approved severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines in preventing severe disease and death, breakthrough infections continue to occur in vaccinated individuals, contributing to further viral mutation and spread. These limitations may be attributable to the poor induction of mucosal immunity by parenteral vaccination. Mucosal adjuvants, such as T-vant, can enhance vaccine-induced immune responses through the generation of antigen-specific antibodies and T cells in the respiratory tract. In this study, we evaluated the protective efficacy of adjuvanted SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) subunit vaccines administered by homologous and heterologous routes. Immunized mice were challenged with …

Introduction: Tauopathies, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), feature abnormal accumulations of hyperphosphorylated Tau protein; however, their biomarker potential in traumatic brain injury (TBI) is not well-defined. This study investigated whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) phosphorylated Tau at threonine-217 (pTau-217) could serve as an early biomarker for severe TBI (sTBI).

Methods: CSF samples from 26 sTBI patients, collected between 6 and 240 h post-injury, and 19 healthy controls were analyzed using an optimized direct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA; sensitivity < 4.7 pg/mL) for pTau-217 detection, complemented by Western blot validation. Temporal analysis, ROC curves, and trajectory clustering were used for interpretation.

Results: CSF pTau-217 levels were significantly elevated in sTBI patients at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 48 h post-injury compared to controls (p …

Background: The reactivation of neurodevelopmental programs in cancer highlights parallel biological processes that occur in both normal development and brain tumors. Achieving a deeper understanding of how dysregulated developmental factors play a role in the progression of brain tumors is therefore crucial for identifying potential targets for therapeutic interventions. Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-Seq) provides an opportunity to understand how developmental programs are dysregulated and reinitiated in brain tumors at single-cell resolution. The aim of this study is to identify the developmental origins of brain tumors using scRNA-Seq data.

Methods: Here, we introduce COORS (Cell Of ORigin like CellS), a computational tool …

Olfactory sensory neurons within the nasal epithelium detect volatile odorants and relay odor information to the central nervous system. Unlike other sensory inputs, olfactory sensory neurons interface with the external environment and project their axons directly into the central nervous system. The use of adeno-associated viruses to target these neurons has garnered interest for applications in gene therapy, probing olfactory sensory neuron biology, and modeling disease. To date, there is no consensus on the optimal AAV serotype for efficient and selective transduction of olfactory sensory neurons

INTRODUCTION: The oncogene MDM2 has garnered attention not only for its role in cancer as a negative regulator of the tumor suppressor p53 but also for its p53-independent oncogenic activities. MDM2 also involves metabolic reprogramming, such as serine metabolism, respiration, mitochondrial functions, the folate cycle, and redox balance. Traditional MDM2 inhibitors blocking the protein-protein binding between MDM2 and p53 have shown limited clinical success in various stages of clinical trials, most likely due to low efficacy, drug toxicity, and drug resistance, highlighting the need for a novel, p53-independent strategy to inhibit MDM2. The present study investigated the antitumor effects of …

BACKGROUND: The antigen Na-GST-1, expressed by the hookworm Necator americanus, plays crucial biochemical roles in parasite survival. This study explores the development of mRNA vaccine candidates based on Na-GST-1, building on the success of recombinant Na-GST-1 (rNa-GST-1) protein, currently assessed as a subunit vaccine candidate, which has shown promise in preclinical and clinical studies.

METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: By leveraging the flexible design of RNA vaccines and protein intracellular trafficking signal sequences, we developed three variants of Na-GST-1 as native (cytosolic), secretory, and plasma membrane-anchored (PM) antigens. After one immunization in mice, mRNA vaccines induced an earlier onset of antigen-specific antibodies compared to …

The isolation of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) spirochetes has proven to be a useful tool to understand their distribution in geographic areas where the tick vectors inhabit. However, their isolation and culture are not easy and in general an animal model is needed to achieve this task. Here, argasid ticks were collected from a neighborhood in Ciudad Caucel, and they were identified as Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) puertoricensis. To determine whether these were infected with TBRF bacteria they were fed with healthy mice but only a low burden of spirochetes was observed. An immunosuppressed mouse model was used to feed the ticks …

Breaking The Ice: Disability Representation In The “Ice” Love, Death + Robots Adaptation, Danbee You

Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize

This essay examines how Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots (LDR) adaptation of Rich Larson’s short story “Ice” transforms its original sibling dynamic into a commentary steeped in ableist tropes. While Larson’s story portrays Sedgewick, the unmodded brother, as autonomous and confident, the episode reinterprets him through infantilizing and victimizing lenses, casting him as a disabled figure in need of rescue. The LDR episode’s decisions to downplay or embellish certain elements of Larson’s short story reveal eco-ableist and transhumanist-ableist themes that link bodily limitation to environmental incompatibility and valorize technological modification as physical superiority. Furthermore, Fletcher’s deceptive “help” exemplifies the heroic …

Prevalence Of Emergency Management Across The Conservation Reserve Program And Effects Of Emergency Management On Field Vegetation, Gretchen Steffensmeier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is an extensive government program established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1985 where farmers across the country agree to take land out of agricultural production and plant species to improve environmental health and quality in exchange for yearly rental payments. The main goals of CRP include re-establishing valuable land cover to improve water quality, preventing soil erosion, and reducing the loss of wildlife habitat. Currently, there are approximately 22 million acres enrolled across the country. The CRP is portrayed as a powerful tool that can be used to mitigate the impacts …

The Gut-Brain Axis: Investigating The Effects Of Diet, Physical Activity, And Prior Adversity On Anxiety Via Autonomic Nervous System, Jenna L. Pennella

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature has highlighted a bidirectional relationship between the gut and brain called the gut-brain axis (de Punder & Pruimboom, 2015; Hill et al., 2008; Leistner & Menke, 2020). The current study aimed to investigate directional relations between different stressors (e.g. poor diet, vigorous activity, and prior adversity) and anxiety and how interactions with gut issues and autonomic dysfunction may impact these relationships. Based on previous literature, we examined (a) physical activity and diet as moderators of stress and anxiety as well as stress and GI symptoms, (b) GI symptoms as a mediator between various predictors (i.e., diet, stress, physical …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Short-Term Surface Sediment Deposition And Accretion At The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve: Implications For Resilience Of Coastal Wetlands To Sea-Level Rise, Jacob Michael Berna Jan 2025

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Short-Term Surface Sediment Deposition And Accretion At The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve: Implications For Resilience Of Coastal Wetlands To Sea-Level Rise, Jacob Michael Berna

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coastal wetlands are at risk of drowning due to the increasing threat of rising sea levels. Wetlands will have to build in elevation vertically or migrate horizontally to survive. Previous research has demonstrated that some wetlands have the potential to naturally build in elevation over time if deposition and accretion rates from allochthonous sediment delivery are substantial, but work in this area has been limited, and many coastal wetlands remain understudied. Portions of Northeast Florida are especially lacking in short-term surface deposition and accretion data. Without surface rates it is difficult to determine the vulnerability of different wetlands to rising …

Dynamics Of Prey-Prey Mutualism With Varying Carrying Capacity And Herd Behavior In The Presence Of Predator, Felix Dela Djokoto Jan 2025

Dynamics Of Prey-Prey Mutualism With Varying Carrying Capacity And Herd Behavior In The Presence Of Predator, Felix Dela Djokoto

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the dynamics of mutualistic relationships between two prey species in the presence of a predator, by taking into account herding in one species along with the influence of carrying capacities between two prey species. These mutualistic dynamics are presented by constructing two mathematical models, namely an indirect and direct mutualism model. As the strength of the symbiotic relationship increases the indirect model goes through transcritical bifurcation to Hopf bifurcation whereas in the direct mutualism model goes through saddle-node bifurcation to Hopf bifurcation.

Severe Aggression Among Zoo-Housed Coconut (Trichoglossus Haematodus) And Rainbow (Trichoglossus Moluccanus) Lorikeets: Wellbeing Considerations For Free-Flight Aviaries, Emily Simkins

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As conservation and education institutions, modern zoos balance the needs of animals with the interests of visitors through several strategies which can increase animal wellbeing and improve visitor experience. Environmental enrichment is frequently employed to increase the suitability of anthropogenic environments for zoo-housed animals, such as through walkthrough habitats and free-flight aviaries. While habitats such as these are important for visitor experience and can be enriching to animals, there are also wellbeing considerations for these spaces. Walkthrough habitats can be a potential source of fear and stress for animals, as shown by increased frequencies of vigilance, undesirable behavior, and aggression. …

What’S For Dinner? A Multi-Pronged Approach Investigating The Foraging Habits And Diet Of St. Johns River Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Erebennus), Andrea Leigh Swinehart

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wildlife population management depends on knowledge of the population’s foraging ecology. A community of resident Tamanend’s bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops erebennus) utilizes the St. Johns River (SJR) in Jacksonville, Florida, and members of the community are regularly sighted emaciated or with skin lesions. Anthropogenic disturbances may contribute to further health decline, therefore Chapter One analyzed SJR foraging dolphin group habitat use before, during, and after a large-scale dredging event known as the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Project (JHDP). Kernel density estimates (KDEs) of foraging dolphin group sightings were generated to estimate 95% utilization distributions (i.e., foraging home ranges) for three …

The Presence Of Mercury (Hg) And Perfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In The Guana And Tolomato Rivers, Morgan E. Lattomus

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Guana and Tolomato Rivers provide essential habitat for several ecologically and economically important species and is a well-loved and recreated area. Spanning the northeastern Florida coast, the rivers are home to over 50 endangered or threatened species and host several habitat restoration projects due to their ecological significance and proximity to development along the coast. The effects of human influence and pollution, and specifically toxic metal mercury (Hg) and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are not well known within the system. Hg is known to biomagnify within food webs, and there is a considerable lack of literature concerning PFAS behavior within …

Pygoscelis Penguins Prefer Different Oceanographic And Terrestrial Habitats During The Austral Summer, Katherine L. Gallagher, Rachel Herman, Katherine Walton, Michael S. Dinniman, Heather J. Lynch

OES Faculty Publications

Pygoscelis penguins interact with both terrestrial and marine environments, especially during the austral summer when they raise their chicks. Accessible ice-free ground spaces serve as locations for penguins to build colonies and successfully raise chicks while the surrounding marine environment serves as the foraging grounds for adult birds. Penguins must be able to navigate through the waters around their colonies to forage for Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), their primary prey during the austral summer. Krill, whose distributions are driven partially by the surrounding physics and partially by their behaviors, must also be plentiful in the waters near the …

Heterospecific Coprophagy In The White-Tailed Deer Odocoileus Virginianus (Zimmermann, 1780) In Costa Rica, Mora Manuel Jose, Juan De Dios Astorga-Acuña

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Animals may engage in coprophagy, including heterospecific coprophagy, where they consume the feces of other species. The white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, primarily feeds on plant material, such as tender forbs and shrub shoots. This report documents a case of heterospecific coprophagy by the white-tailed deer in Costa Rica, where two individuals were observed consuming domestic horse feces. The reasons for heterospecific coprophagy in ruminants like the white-tailed deer are unclear. Nutritional supplementation, microbial transfer, or other ecological factors may play a role in this behavior. However, such a behavior also poses risks, including the transmission of diseases and parasites from …

A Transferable Approach For Quantifying Benthic Fish Sizes And Densities In Annotated Underwater Images, Peter C. Esselman, Shadi Moradi, Joseph K. Geisz, Christopher Roussi

Michigan Tech Publications

Benthic fishes are a common target of scientific monitoring but are difficult to quantify because of their close association to bottom habitats that are hard to access. Advances in image-acquisition technologies, machine vision and deep learning have made capturing and quantifying fishes with cameras increasingly feasible. We present a method and open-source software called ‘FishScale’ to estimate benthic fish lengths, numeric abundance and biomass density in underwater environments assessed with down-looking monocular images. ‘FishScale’ estimates fish abundances and size frequencies from near-nadir monocular images where fish have already been semantically segmented. The software accounts for lens distortion, underwater magnification effects …
