Aquariam (2018) By Cynthia Alonso, Samantha Piede Jan 2025

Aquariam (2018) By Cynthia Alonso, Samantha Piede

Picture Books

When the protagonist of Cynthia Alonso's Aquarium discovers a small, orange fish has splashed onto her neighborhood pier, she delightedly attempts to realize her dream of living amongst marine life. She decides to build a new home for it -- a human-sized aquarium -- in her living room. However, her earnestness is not enough to make this space a true home for the fish. Samantha Piede's Thinking in Stories review highlights several ethical and epistemological questions raised by this wordless narrative. What can we know of the needs and desires of species other than our own? What are the ethical …

Depth Of The Lake And The Height Of The Sky (2017) By Kim Jihyun, Megan Jane Laverty Jan 2025

Depth Of The Lake And The Height Of The Sky (2017) By Kim Jihyun, Megan Jane Laverty

Picture Books

The Depth of the Lake and the Height of the Sky (2017) is KimJihyun’s first picture book; it is composed entirely of pictures. It “tells” the story of a young boy and his dog who spend a day swimming and sunbathing at a lake that is within walking distance from his grandparents' home, whom he is visiting with his parents. At first glance, the story might seem unremarkable, recounting an experience familiar to many. However, Kim’s illustrations challenge this assumption by drawing us into the boy’s encounter with nature. She creates a visual journey that guides us through a perceptual …

Foreign Object Detection System Development Using Edge Devices Integrated With Quadcopter Autonomous Tracking, Chi-Chia Huang, Ching-Hung Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study proposes an all-weather autonomous foreign-object detection system capable of operating in low-light environments. We used a highly mobile quadcopter equipped with an edge-computing device as the inspection platform. On the software side, we integrated a low-light image enhancement model, a path-tracking algorithm, and a foreign object detection model to achieve rapid object detection. A lightweight, low-light image-enhancement model reduces the need for additional lighting equipment, thereby enabling reliable detection under low-light conditions. The path-tracking algorithm integrates a lightweight semantic segmentation model with traditional image-processing techniques to establish flight paths efficiently and reliably. The foreign-object detection component employs state-of-the-art …

Optimization Of Underactuated Ship Sliding Mode Controller Based On The Ddpg Algorithm, Lin Ma, Mingzhe Qi, Shicai Chen, Hongwei Bian, Jian Zhang Jan 2025

Optimization Of Underactuated Ship Sliding Mode Controller Based On The Ddpg Algorithm, Lin Ma, Mingzhe Qi, Shicai Chen, Hongwei Bian, Jian Zhang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Due to the development of ship intelligence, the demand for precise controllers is increasing day by day. In traditional design, the trial-and-error method often leads to the use of inaccurate controller parameters, causing oscillations when environmental disturbances are present. To address these issues, this study introduces deep learning to optimize the controller parameters, particularly those used for sliding mode controllers in underactuated ships. We adopt the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithm based on the Actor Critic framework. By freely setting the reward function to match the control objective, the trained model can output more accurate controller parameters, with the …

The rapid expansion of Southeast Asia’s container port systems has intensified environmental concerns, necessitating an assessment of both operational and environmental efficiency. This study evaluates environmental operational efficiency by analyzing ship emissions during cargo handling at 20 major ports in 2022, using a bottom-up methodology within the SBM-DEA model. Emissions were treated as an undesirable output to compare ports’ efficiency levels. Findings indicate that rising cargo handling activities have significantly increased emissions. Larger ports in the region demonstrated higher operational efficiency than smaller ports. They also attained environmental efficiency by leveraging scale advantages, adopting advanced technology, and investing in green …

Investigating Tlr-Mediated Cytokine Synergy In Macrophages, Erick Salvador Rocha Jan 2025

Investigating Tlr-Mediated Cytokine Synergy In Macrophages, Erick Salvador Rocha

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Cytokine dysregulation during microbial infections can dangerously increase the severity of associated diseases. Non-additive responses to simultaneous activation of toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathways are one potential contributor. Here we explored mechanisms underlying the TLR2/MyD88 and TLR3/TRIF-mediated responses in macrophages for canonical pro-inflammatory and antiviral targets including TNF, IL-6, IL-12p40, IFN-β and CXCL10. We found that all targets exhibited characteristic levels of synergistic cytokine activation that varied with TLR-ligand concentration and exposure time. These trends were conserved when the TLR3-ligand polyI:C (PIC) was combined with either of the TLR2-mediated pathogens S. aureus or L. pneumophila. Using pharmacological inhibitors, genetic …

Artificial Intelligence And Seeing The Invisible In Arts - From The Wane Of Axiality And Symmetry To The Wax Of Invisibility And Emptiness, M. Samir Abou El-Seoud Jan 2025

Artificial Intelligence And Seeing The Invisible In Arts - From The Wane Of Axiality And Symmetry To The Wax Of Invisibility And Emptiness, M. Samir Abou El-Seoud

Computer Science

Function has been always an important driver in architectural design. It is the request to generate form directly from purpose and utility. In 1896, Louis Sullivan projected that ‘form follows function’ and that the beauty of a building derives directly from its function and not from references of the built heritage. The assumption was that beauty would naturally derive from design once functional requirements are met. Thus, fitness for purpose equals beauty. In 1908, Adolf Loos even went so far as to ask for the total abandonment of decoration. In 1947, Mies van der Rohe made his paradigm shift, function …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heifer development on dormant rangelands offers a cost-effective alternative to feedlot or drylot systems. However, traditional bunk supplementation methods often result in uneven intake, inefficient feed use, and ecological degradation around static feeding sites. This thesis evaluated the integration of precision livestock technologies and a dynamic Range Supplementation Model to improve individual animal performance, weight uniformity, and rangeland sustainability in extensive heifer development systems in the Northern Great Plains. The first study involved a seven-month trial (November 2023–May 2024) with 50 yearling Angus heifers grazing dormant native rangelands at the SDSU Cottonwood Field Station. Heifers were stratified into two treatments: …

(In)Animate: Exploring The Relationship Between Obsessivecompulsive Disorder, Perceived Thought Control, And Anthropomorphism, Kaitlyn O’Neill

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Introduction: Ritual behaviors help manage uncertainty and anxiety by providing a sense of control, but rigid engagement in such behaviors can indicate obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD). Most OCD research has focused on harm-avoidance versus "not-just-right-experiences" (NJREs), with exposure and ritual prevention (ERP) being less effective for those without clear feared outcomes. Anthropomorphizing, or assigning human traits to objects, complicates OCD treatment, particularly for those with hoarding behaviors.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between OCD with and without hoarding behaviors ("saving" behavior) and anthropomorphism. Given ERP’s role in OCD treatment, understanding how anthropomorphism affects OCD is crucial. It was …

Target Cell-Associated Cd47 Suppresses Nadph Oxidase Activity In Macrophages During Antibody Dependent Cellular Phagocytosis, Seuly Akter Jan 2025

Target Cell-Associated Cd47 Suppresses Nadph Oxidase Activity In Macrophages During Antibody Dependent Cellular Phagocytosis, Seuly Akter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

CD47-SIRPα signaling is a well-known immune checkpoint that suppresses macrophage-mediated antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP). In this study, we explored how CD47 influences reactive oxygen species (ROS) production driven by Fcγ receptor (FcγR) signaling. Our results show that macrophages produce significantly more ROS when encountering IgG coated target cells lacking CD47.Polarization with IFNγ further amplified this effect. ThusCD47-SIRPα interactions limit phagocytosis and suppress oxidative ROS production by macrophages. We found that CD47 blockade and IFNγ stimulation enhanced ADCP through distinct mechanisms. CD47 blockade removed the inhibitory "don't eat me" signal supporting ADCP and ADROS. Similarly, IFNγ enhances ADCP by upregulating FcγRI …

A Twenty-First Century Approach To Darius Milhaud's Saudades Do Brasil, Paige H. Crain Jan 2025

A Twenty-First Century Approach To Darius Milhaud's Saudades Do Brasil, Paige H. Crain

Theses and Dissertations--Music

French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from February 1917 to November 1918. Milhaud’s experience in Rio was overwhelmingly positive, and several of his works were influenced by this period of his life, one being a suite for solo piano titled Saudades do Brasil, Op. 67. Inspired by Brazilian popular music, this piece is an example of exoticism, a trend of writing music based on cultures other than the composer’s own. Considering that exoticism historically has the potential to perpetuate harmful stereotypes or generate false information, this research delves into Saudades do Brasil, exploring …

The Richness Of Perception: Dynamic Visual Representations From Static Images, Kimberly Wong Jan 2025

The Richness Of Perception: Dynamic Visual Representations From Static Images, Kimberly Wong

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

What is the purpose of visual perception? The most common explanations suggest that “seeing” is for answering the question ‘What’s out there?’ — giving us information about the features and objects in the current local environment. This dissertation, in contrast, suggests a different approach: seeing is also for answering the question ‘What’s happening?’ — and the related questions ‘What just Happened?’ and ‘What’s about to happen?’. The critical difference is that while the more common answer seems implicitly static, these newer answers are intrinsically dynamic. This dissertation proposes that visual processing represents even certain static images …
