Advances In The Development Of Mitochondrial Pyruvate Carrier Inhibitors For Therapeutic Applications, Henry Politte, Lingaiah Maram, Bahaa Elgendy

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) is a transmembrane protein complex critical for cellular energy metabolism, enabling the transport of pyruvate from the cytosol into the mitochondria, where it fuels the citric acid cycle. By regulating this essential entry point of carbon into mitochondrial metabolism, MPC is pivotal for maintaining cellular energy balance and metabolic flexibility. Dysregulation of MPC activity has been implicated in several metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cancer, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic target. This review provides an overview of the MPC complex, examining its structural components, regulatory mechanisms, and biological functions. We explore …

Streaming Media Platforms And Film/Video Arts Distribution, Aras Ozgun, Andreas Treske

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Streaming media platforms have emerged as new and natively digital forms of content delivery for mainstream news and entertainment media over the past decades. Underlying technologies also unfold new possibilities for the circulation artistic/creative digital video works. Yet, such potential remains relatively underexplored, due to the complexities involved in the public distribution of such works. In this study, we analyze these complexities and critically evaluate emerging models, such as open access streaming media platforms, subscription-based platforms, and cryptocurrency and NFT-based platforms that feature new administrative forms and governance strategies. We finally discuss the possible roles of traditional public cultural institutions …

Exploring Single Cell Microbial Protein As A Sustainable Fishmeal Alternative In Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola Lalandi) Diets: Impacts On Health And Gut Microbiome, Luke Pilmer, Lindsey Woolley, Alan Lymbery, Chinh Dam, Abigail Elizur, Md Javed Foysal, Gavin Partridge Feb 2025

Exploring Single Cell Microbial Protein As A Sustainable Fishmeal Alternative In Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola Lalandi) Diets: Impacts On Health And Gut Microbiome, Luke Pilmer, Lindsey Woolley, Alan Lymbery, Chinh Dam, Abigail Elizur, Md Javed Foysal, Gavin Partridge

Fisheries Research Articles

Background

With the global expansion of aquaculture and the increasing demand for fish meal, identifying appropriate and sustainable alternative protein sources for aquafeeds has become essential. Single-cell protein (SCP), derived from methanotrophic bacteria, presents a promising alternative by converting methane into protein, potentially addressing both the need for alternative protein sources and reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different levels of SCP inclusion (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% fish meal replacement) on the health, gene expression, and gut microbiome of yellowtail kingfish (YTK, Seriola lalandi) following a 35-day growth trial.

Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders affecting humans and animals, and the central pathogenic event is the conversion of normal prion protein (PrPC) into the pathogenic PrPSc isoform. Previous studies have identified nanobodies that specifically recognize PrPC and inhibit the PrPC to PrPSc conversion in vitro. In this study, we investigated the potential for in vivo expression of anti-PrPC nanobodies and evaluated their impact on prion disease. The coding sequences of three nanobodies were packaged into recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) and were administered via intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection in newborn mice. We found that the expression of these nanobodies remained robust …

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a multisystem disorder most often caused by pathogenic variants in genes that encode type I collagen. Type I collagen is abundant not only in bone but also in multiple tissues including skin, tendons, cornea, blood vessels, and heart. Thus, OI can be expected to affect cardiovascular system, and there are numerous reports of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people with OI. However, there is no consensus on how CVD in OI should be assessed or managed. To fill this gap, a multidisciplinary group was convened to develop clinical guidance. The work included a systematic review of the …

Leandro’s plan to escape with Gabi is thrown into disarray when Gabi is caught stealing a single strawberry in the market. Leandro takes the blame and is sentenced to banishment, or he can choose to have his consciousness transferred to …

A Cohort Of The Willing: How Secondary Schools Might Face The Literacy Crisis, Michelle A. Barney Feb 2025

A Cohort Of The Willing: How Secondary Schools Might Face The Literacy Crisis, Michelle A. Barney

The Utah English Journal

Experts like Louisa Moats and anyone who has recently completed LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training, know that 95% of children can be taught to read (Louisa Moats, 2023). As a secondary educator, it’s tempting to see this statistic and ignore it. Surely, this must be someone else’s problem. In fact, if all goes according to plan in the world of elementary education, students become proficient at foundational reading skills before fourth grade, especially if one considers Kilpatrick’s work which establishes this benchmark for the development of advanced phonological awareness skills (Kilpatrick, 2015, p. …

Examining Tension Management Of Coastal Residents' Decisions To Stay Or Leave During Hurricane Florence, Andrew S. Pyle, Ryan P. Fuller, Hillary Smith

Publications

This study examines how coastal residents in the path of a hurricane manage the tension to evacuate or stay. In interviews with 17 coastal residents, we found evidence of tension management through account giving. Stayers justified their choices as keeping close to loved ones and animals, reducing difficulties in returning, and benchmarking prior storms to guide their actions over other sources of information. Evacuees framed the tension as either the only choice or the better of two poor choices. Our analysis also revealed contradictions in evacuating: a case of haves (have resources to evacuate but do not) and have nots …

May Federal Courts Answer Questions When Not Deciding Cases?, Benjamin B. Johnson

Notre Dame Law Review

Conventional wisdom says that Article III’s case-or-controversy requirement prevents federal courts from answering legal questions when they are not deciding cases. This is only partially correct. This Article shows conditions under which a federal court may answer questions even when not deciding a case. To do so, it traces the appellate power back to its origins in English common law courts and through the early American judiciary. For centuries, common law judges have answered questions sent to them by lower courts when doing so would help those lower courts to decide pending cases. In England, the “case stated” procedure facilitated …

Immunity For Imaginary Policy In Tort Claims Against The Federal Government, Gregory C. Sisk Feb 2025

Immunity For Imaginary Policy In Tort Claims Against The Federal Government, Gregory C. Sisk

Notre Dame Law Review

Fictional policy justifications for official negligence are regularly accepted by the federal courts to shield the federal government from liability for ordinary tortious wrongdoing. The lower federal courts have adopted an extravagant interpretation of the discretionary function exception to the Federal Tort Claims Act that applies whenever a policy implication can be theorized. Under this “susceptible to policy analysis” approach, the United States government escapes accountability through after-the-fact speculation regarding policy factors that could have played a role (but actually did not) in the harmful government conduct.

By textual command, the exception shields only government decisions “based on,” that is, …

The Equity In Corporate Law, Andrew S. Gold, Henry E. Smith Feb 2025

The Equity In Corporate Law, Andrew S. Gold, Henry E. Smith

Notre Dame Law Review

It is no secret that equity is a central part of corporate law. Yet a fuller appreciation of what equity means for corporate law is still lacking. This Article offers a new account of corporate law’s equity, showing that it is a kind of meta-law—or law about law—that operates ex post to address polycentric problems, conflicting rights, and opportunism. As we argue, much of the structure of corporate law—its architecture—is explained by the need for a robust equity that can intervene where needed, while also avoiding the dangers of unconstrained judicial discretion. Corporate law maintains a careful balance, one that …

When Religious Exercise And Private Rights Collide, Brent J. Nymeyer Feb 2025

When Religious Exercise And Private Rights Collide, Brent J. Nymeyer

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note proposes that the state action doctrine—where state statutory and common law, or the judicial finding of liability thereunder, is government burdening to the same extent that a criminal law or prosecution is government burdening—should extend to always allow religious exercise claims and defenses in disputes involving only private parties. Part I lays out the development of religious exercise jurisprudence under the federal and state systems and the current landscape of jurisdictions’ treatment of religious exercise claims and defenses in private disputes.

Part II proceeds in two sections: Section A presents representative cases from criminal law and relevant areas …

I am reading aloud Zombie Makers: True Stories of Nature’s Undead (Johnson, 2013) to a group of 7th grade students. The text describes the larva stage where a young jewel wasp feasts on the cockroach’s insides. As I read, there are scattered exclamations of “ewwww,” “sick,” and audible gasps. I stop reading to dig into these reactions.

An Approach To Estimate Angling Effort, Catch, And Harvest Of Burbot Lota Lota, Collin J. Mitchell Feb 2025

An Approach To Estimate Angling Effort, Catch, And Harvest Of Burbot Lota Lota, Collin J. Mitchell

Biology Graduate Theses

Once commonly thought of as a nuisance, Burbot Lota lota are now being frequently targeted by anglers in Minnesota. However, the amount of angling effort directed at Burbot, the distribution of effort, catch, and harvest are unknown. Historically, creel surveys have been used to estimate angling effort, catch, and harvest. Additionally, digital cameras have been used independently and supplementally to estimate angling effort, catch, and harvest. In this study, we estimate angling effort, catch, and harvest of Burbot using creel survey techniques and motion-activated digital cameras on Bad Medicine Lake, Minnesota, while also investigating and exploring the limitations of these …

Beyond Privity Of Blood: Intestacy And Charity, Adam J. Hirsch Feb 2025

Beyond Privity Of Blood: Intestacy And Charity, Adam J. Hirsch

UC Law Journal

When an individual dies without leaving a will, the law of intestacy functions to distribute the decedent’s estate to a surviving spouse and/or close blood relatives. Yet, this default regime fails to account for the possibility that some individuals wish to allocate part of their estates to charity. Drawing on empirical evidence, including data presented here for the first time, this Article advocates building a charitable component into intestacy in those cases where majorities of decedents prefer to establish estate plans transcending traditional heirs. Evidence suggests that this majority preference arises in four situations: (1) where the decedent was extremely …

Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Papers

Tulving characterized semantic memory as a vast repository of meaning that underlies language and many other cognitive processes. This perspective on lexical and conceptual knowledge galvanized a new era of research undertaken by numerous fields, each with their own idiosyncratic methods and terminology. For example, "concept" has different meanings in philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. As such, many fundamental constructs used to delineate semantic theories remain underspecified and/or opaque. Weak construct specificity is among the leading causes of the replication crisis now facing psychology and related fields. Term ambiguity hinders cross-disciplinary communication, falsifiability, and incremental theory-building. Numerous cognitive subdisciplines (e.g., vision, …
