Understanding how the traits of lineages are related to diversification is key for elucidating the origin of variation in species richness. Here, we test whether traits are related to species richness among lineages of trees from all major biogeographical settings of the lowland wet tropics. We explore whether variation in mortality rate, breeding system and maximum diameter are related to species richness, either directly or via associations with range size, among 463 genera that contain wet tropical forest trees. For Amazonian genera, we also explore whether traits are related to species richness via variation among genera in mean species-level range …

Motor Pool Selectivity Of Neuromuscular Degeneration In Type I Spinal Muscular Atrophy Is Conserved Between Human And Mouse, Justin C Lee, Wendy K Chung, David J Pisapia, Christopher E Henderson Feb 2025

Motor Pool Selectivity Of Neuromuscular Degeneration In Type I Spinal Muscular Atrophy Is Conserved Between Human And Mouse, Justin C Lee, Wendy K Chung, David J Pisapia, Christopher E Henderson

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by low levels of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. Even though SMN is ubiquitously expressed, the disease selectively affects motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness. Even among motor neurons, certain motor units appear more clinically resistant to SMA. To quantitatively survey selective resistance, we studied extensive neuromuscular autopsies of Type I SMA patients and age-matched controls. We found highly divergent degrees of degeneration of neighboring motor units, even within individual cranial nerves or a single anatomical area such as the neck. Examination of a Type I SMA patient maintained on life support …

News From The Chapters 1994-1995, C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

Alpha Chapter did an excellent job promoting geography this year. With 27 active members this was easy to do. We had several big projects that we took on. One was the restoration of the ISU Nature Trail which has been defunct for 10 years. The members enjoyed this outdoor project, picking up trash, old furniture and clearing the path. This project will continue to be on-going. We hope to write a selfguided tour book, create lesson plans for the local school teachers and add picnic tables and rebuild markers and signs. Our second project was to contact a local school …

Effect Of Vitamin K Supplementation On Insulin Resistance: A Review, Samantha Mccord, Rebecca Willier, Kaitlyn Kirby, Kaylin Mahoney, Lance Dillon, Rileigh Rahrig, Brianna Lu, Joshua Honaker, Emily Eddy

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Insulin resistance is one of the pathological hallmarks that leads to the development of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Around 40% of people aged 18 to 44 living in the United States have insulin resistance. Recent research, coupled with a better understanding of how vitamin K functions in the body, suggests that this vitamin could potentially help reduce insulin resistance. Vitamin K is not included in the American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines for the treatment of insulin resistance, but it has been shown to have some benefits in patients with T2DM. It may also serve as a treatment option for …

The Melanesian Triad Of Unity, Ibrahim Peyon Feb 2025

The Melanesian Triad Of Unity, Ibrahim Peyon

Antropologi Indonesia

In the Melanesian worldview, humans, land, waters, plants, animals and the entire universe were created by the Creator God, and this is the essence of the original religions in Melanesia. This paper investigates this basic Melanesian philosophy, which is called the Melanesian Triad of Unity here. Oneness denotes God the Creator as the core entity, the parts of his body constituting all beings and the universe. The three principles are 1) one nation, 2) one soul and one spirit, and 3) one land and nature. All the elements are composed naturally in these three principles. As argued in this paper, …

The Ai-Robotic Prescription: Legal Liability When An Autonomous Ai Robot Is Your Medical Provider, Erika Sophia Grossbard Feb 2025

The Ai-Robotic Prescription: Legal Liability When An Autonomous Ai Robot Is Your Medical Provider, Erika Sophia Grossbard

University of Miami Business Law Review

As AI-driven healthcare accelerates, lawmakers must race against time to establish vital regulations, striving to protect patient safety in an era of increasingly autonomous medical devices. The real challenges arise when an automated AI medical device harms a patient during medical care, and the law has yet to clarify how liability should be allocated among its stakeholders. Currently, semi-autonomous robots are diagnosing medical conditions and performing surgeries. Eventually, autonomous AI medical providers will enter the market, capable of making independent medical decisions and providing treatment. These autonomous robots will function more like medical practitioners rather than merely as assistive tools …

The Ethical Governance Of Artificial Intelligence: Using The Ai Integrative Risk-Based (Airb) Model To Achieve Compliance Risk Management, Miriam Weismann Feb 2025

The Ethical Governance Of Artificial Intelligence: Using The Ai Integrative Risk-Based (Airb) Model To Achieve Compliance Risk Management, Miriam Weismann

University of Miami Business Law Review

While undeniably powerful, artificial intelligence algorithms also pose significant risks. The ethical, legal, social, and scientific implications of various AI models can be profound, as demonstrated by the subprime mortgage crisis. This crisis, worsened by the unregulated use of derivative algorithms, is a stark reminder of the pivotal role of individual accountability, ethical responsibility, and regulation in preventing future “catastrophic harm.”1 This Article ventures into the uncharted territory of AI ethical governance and aims to advance AI scholarship and address the unresolved issue of ethical compliance management in AI. Employing a risk-based assessment tool is critical for developing regulatory and …

A Mechanistic Exploration Of How Neighborhood Crime Exposure Relates To Neonatal Brain Function, Early Externalizing Behaviors, And Callous-Unemotional Traits, Rebecca Brady Feb 2025

A Mechanistic Exploration Of How Neighborhood Crime Exposure Relates To Neonatal Brain Function, Early Externalizing Behaviors, And Callous-Unemotional Traits, Rebecca Brady

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Pregnancy through early childhood is a period of tremendous neural and behavioral development. Neuronal birth and migration occur prenatally and result in the formation of neonatal functional and structural networks. These early brain networks are a building block for postnatal development wherein infants rapidly learn a variety of new skills, including socioemotional skills such as emotion regulation and moral understanding. During the acquisition of these skills, even typically developing toddlers can act aggressively or impulsively; however, toddlers with high levels of externalizing behaviors are more likely to develop clinical externalizing disorders later in childhood and adolescence. As such, it is …

Cherokee Removal Along The Trail, 1838-1839: Separating Fact From Fiction, John Norman Patterson Feb 2025

Cherokee Removal Along The Trail, 1838-1839: Separating Fact From Fiction, John Norman Patterson

Masters Theses

The misinformation and misunderstandings concerning Cherokee Indian removal has resulted from how subsequent generations of historians and Cherokees have talked and written about it. The historiography of Indian removal is quite extensive but with respect to Cherokee removal not so much because most of the original documents kept by the Cherokees unexplainably disappeared in the nineteenth century. The drought of 1837-1838 was used as an excuse by John Ross and Lewis Ross to insist that the northern route be used to remove the remaining Cherokees to Indian Territory. Evidence presented clearly demonstrates that both men sought to enrich themselves at …

Ecological Influences On Informal Property Rights: Experimental Evidence, Erik O. Kimbrough Feb 2025

Ecological Influences On Informal Property Rights: Experimental Evidence, Erik O. Kimbrough

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This paper explores the possibility that informal property right systems evolve unique features as a function of the characteristics of the resources over which they are established. We develop an experimental environment that allows us to test this hypothesis by comparing the emergence of property in (virtual) land when resource yields are either high- or low-variance and renewable or non-renewable. Previous research suggests that high-variance resources may lead to relatively insecure claims to property. Intuition suggests that this may be amplified when those resources are renewable. The experiments confirm that informal property rights adapt to resource characteristics in a manner …

The Impacts Of Software Development Methodologies On New Model Success Rate In The U.S. Automotive Industry, Marquita Aleatrice Tucker Feb 2025

The Impacts Of Software Development Methodologies On New Model Success Rate In The U.S. Automotive Industry, Marquita Aleatrice Tucker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Since 2017, the U.S. automotive industry has experienced a decrease in new-model launch success rate. A single 12-month delay in a new vehicle launch may cost a manufacturer up to $200 million. One component of automotive product development is software development. The research problem was a lack of understanding of the challenges with software development methodologies from the perspective of software developers, preventing managers from implementing methodologies, policies, and processes to improve the rates of successful new model launches. The purpose and the research questions were focused on exploring the lived experiences of software developers in the U.S. automotive industry …

Evaluation Of Soybean Response To Sulfur Fertilizer Rates And Sources, Md Enamul Haque Moni Feb 2025

Evaluation Of Soybean Response To Sulfur Fertilizer Rates And Sources, Md Enamul Haque Moni

LSU Master's Theses

Sulfur (S) deficiency has become a significant concern for producers due to over 90% reduction in atmospheric-S deposition since the “Clean Air Act” was established. Soil organic matter, another key source of S, is steadily declining due to continuous tillage. So, we evaluated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield and leaf-S concentration responses to six fertilizer-S rates (0, 11, 22, 34, 45, and 67 kg S ha⁻¹) across 50 site-years, and six fertilizer-S sources (no-S check, Ammonium Sulfate (AMS), Sul4r-Plus/Gypsum, K-Mag, Tiger90CR, and Poly4) across 9 site-years in Louisiana from 2023-2024. In S rate study, soybean yield responded positively to …
