Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is often associated with conservative exercise recommendations due to the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, emerging evidence suggests that tailored exercise programs may provide significant benefits to HCM patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the impact of different types and intensities of exercise on clinical outcomes and quality of life in HCM patients, assessed the role of exercise in preventing disease progression and arrhythmias, and determined the safety and efficacy of structured exercise programs tailored to individual risk profiles.

A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and relevant cardiology journals. …

The Relationship Between Closed-Loop Auditory Stimulation During Sleep And Eeg On Memory Consolidation, Hector Patricio Valverde Mar 2025

The Relationship Between Closed-Loop Auditory Stimulation During Sleep And Eeg On Memory Consolidation, Hector Patricio Valverde

Psychology ETDs

Slow-wave sleep is critical for consolidating information into long-term memory. Past research has found this process can be enhanced using closed-loop auditory stimulation (CLAS), where pink noise tones are timed to slow oscillations using live EEG to increase slow wave amplitude and synchronize connections across the neocortex, thalamus, and hippocampus. In this study, subjects slept in our laboratory while receiving counterbalanced sham or verum CLAS. Memory retention scores were calculated using a paired associates word task completed before and after sleep. Subjective sleep quality scores were also obtained. A total of 33 verum and 35 sham nights of data were …

Complete Genome Characterizations Of Two Novel Mitoviruses Hosted By The Hypogeous, Mycorrhizal Fungi Statesia Pompholyx And Tuber Sp., Ilgaz Akata, Gülce Edi̇ş, Eda Kumru, Emre Keski̇n, Ergi̇n Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Botany

The study of viral diversity in uncultivated fungi, including those involved in mycorrhizal relationships, alongside research on viral communities in phytopathogenic and economically important fungi, is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of mycovirus diversity and evolution. Mycorrhizal fungi host various viruses, contributing to our understanding of virus diversity and evolution. Here, we report on the identification and complete genome characterization of two novel mitoviruses that naturally infect the hypogeous, mycorrhizal fungi Statesia pompholyx and Tuber sp. The identified viruses, denominated as “Statesia pompholyx mitovirus 1” (SpMV1) and Tuber mitovirus 3 (TruMV3), have genome lengths of 2549 and 3292 nucleotides and …

Future Applications Of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Ophthalmoscopy In Neuro-Ophthalmology, Neurology, And Neurodegenerative Conditions, Daniel M. Markowitz, Elizabeth Affel, György Hajnóczky, Robert C. Sergott

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) has emerged as an innovative advancement in retinal imaging, with the potential to provide in vivo non-invasive insights into the mitochondrial metabolism of the retina. Traditional retinal imaging, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) intensity imaging, focus solely on structural changes to the retina. In contrast, FLIO provides data that may reflect retinal fluorophore activity, some of which may indicate mitochondrial metabolism. This review builds upon the existing literature to describe the principles of FLIO and established uses in retinal diseases while introducing the potential for FLIO in neurodegenerative conditions.

Effects Of Humic Acid And Salt Stress On Growth, Physiological Parameters And Mineral Substance Uptake In Artemisia Dracunculus L. (Tarragon), Serhat Seven, Şener Akinci

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, the physiological changes in Artemisia dracunculus L. plants under salinity stress and the remediative roles of leonardite-derived liquid humic acid (HA) were investigated. Salt stress caused a significant decrease in measured growth parameters (plant height, fresh weight of leaves and stems, dry weight of leaves and stems, number of leaves and leaf area). HA had a positive effect on growth parameters at 75 mM NaCl concentration, except for leaf number, but its effect was limited at 150 mM NaCl concentration. The total amount of protein was found to be lower in the leaves of seedlings grown under …

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nanoparticles are widely studied for delivering treatments to target tissues, but few have reached clinical use. Most nanoparticles encounter blood vessels on their way to target tissues. The inner surface of these vessels is lined with endothelial cells covered by a glycocalyx, an extracellular matrix rich in anionic glycans. The role of the glycocalyx in nanoparticle interactions is not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that endothelial cells need extended culture times to synthesize a mature glycocalyx. Our research shows that branched polyethyleneimine functionalized gold nanoparticles bind to endothelial cells expressing either a developing or mature glycocalyx, with the interaction involving …

Preterm birth is detrimental to the well-being of both the mother and the newborn. During normal gestation, the myometrium is maintained in a quiescent state by progesterone. As a steroid hormone, progesterone is thought to modify uterine and placental morphology by altering gene expression, but another direct mode of action has long been suspected. Here, we reveal the nongenomic molecular mechanism of progesterone as the activation of human and murine inwardly rectifying potassium channel Kir7.1, which is expressed in myometrium and placental pericytes during late gestation. Kir7.1 is also activated by selective steroids, including those used to prevent premature labor, …

Key findings reveal that structured navigation reduces unintended detours, while progressive disclosure techniques enhance instructional clarity. Additionally, …

Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy: Potential Advances For Reducing Cystic Fibrosis Infection And Organ Inflammation, Tracey L. Bonfield, Hillard M. Lazarus Mar 2025

Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy: Potential Advances For Reducing Cystic Fibrosis Infection And Organ Inflammation, Tracey L. Bonfield, Hillard M. Lazarus

Faculty Scholarship

Innovation in cystic fibrosis (CF) supportive care, including implementing new antimicrobial agents, improved physiotherapy, and highly effective modulators therapy, has advanced patient survival into the 4th and 5th decades of life. However, even with these remarkable improvements in therapy, CF patients continue to suffer from pulmonary infection and other visceral organ complications associated with long-term deficient cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) expression. Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been utilized in tissue engineering based upon their capacity to provide structural components of mesenchymal tissues. An alternative role of MSCs, however is their versatile utilization as cell-based infusion powerhouses due …

INTRODUCTION: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a chronic cerebrovascular disorder characterized by progressive stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid arteries and the development of collateral moyamoya vessels. Surgical revascularization is commonly used to prevent future ischemic events in ischemic-type MMD, but there remains a high rate of stroke perioperatively. This study aims to analyze the predictive factors for perioperative stroke in patients with ischemic-type MMD undergoing surgical revascularization using a large multicenter database.

METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. This study included patients with ischemic-type …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Significant gaps remain in our understanding of immunotherapy-related neurotoxicity in pediatric patients, largely because much of our knowledge comes from studies in adults. Accurately identifying the adverse effects of immunotherapy in children is also challenging, owing to variations in terminology and grading systems. Moreover, the manifestation of immunotherapy-related neurotoxicity differs greatly across different diseases, various modalities, dosages, and delivery methods. Combining immunotherapy with other treatments might improve outcomes but introduces new complexities and potential for increased toxicities. Additionally, pediatric patients with intracranial malignancy have unique responses to immunotherapies and distinct neurotoxicity compared to those with extracranial malignancy. Consequently, we must …

Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Polypeptide And Its Receptor As Novel Therapeutic Targets For Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia, Elizaveta Mangutov Mar 2025

Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Polypeptide And Its Receptor As Novel Therapeutic Targets For Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia, Elizaveta Mangutov

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Opioids are commonly prescribed for the treatment of pain and headache disorders. However, chronic opioid use can result in a paradoxical increased sensitivity to pain as well as an extension of pain area known as opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH). One field OIH has been clearly identified is migraine, known as medication overuse headache (MOH). While opioids may provide acute relief, chronic use results in increased migraine pain severity and progression of migraine from an episodic to chronic state. The primary treatment is opioid cessation, which is difficult to implement as patients are reluctant to stop treatment they believe is helping them, …

Understanding the capacity of forests to adapt to climate change is of pivotal importance for conservation science, yet this is still widely unknown. This knowledge gap is particularly acute in high-biodiversity tropical forests. Here, we examined how tropical forests of the Americas have shifted community trait composition in recent decades as a response to changes in climate. Based on historical trait-climate relationships, we found that, overall, the studied functional traits show shifts of less than 8% of what would be expected given the observed changes in climate. However, the recruit assemblage shows shifts of 21% relative to climate change expectation. …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for refractory depression, but it may also cause cognitive side effects. Despite decades of use, the mechanisms by which ECT exerts both its antidepressant and cognitive effects are still poorly understood, with the latter substantially limiting referral and adherence to therapy. ECT induces changes in correlated neural activity-functional connectivity-across various brain networks, which may underlie both its clinical efficacy and associated cognitive side effects. Electroencephalography (EEG) could address these knowledge gaps by identifying biomarkers that predict therapeutic outcomes or cognitive side effects. Such developments could ultimately improve patient selection and adherence. …

Optimization Of Multi-Session Temporary Deafferentation In Healthy Subjects For Applications In Neurorehabilitation, Mayrin A. Perez, Edrick Garcia, Kelsey Baker Mar 2025

Optimization Of Multi-Session Temporary Deafferentation In Healthy Subjects For Applications In Neurorehabilitation, Mayrin A. Perez, Edrick Garcia, Kelsey Baker

Research Symposium

Temporary deafferentation (TD) has emerged as a powerful methodological and rehabilitation tool, used in animal and clinical studies for over 50 years. TD uses temporary anesthesia to suppress or lower the afferent input from a region, dermatome or innervated muscle. Previous data in our laboratory has shown benefit from a single session of TD. Here, we evaluated multi-session delivery of TD in healthy subjects. We hypothesized that multi-session delivery of TD will result in larger benefits in arm and hand function, compared to a single session. We hypothesized that our observed improvements would be due to improved muscle physiological response …

Alk Drives Neuroblastoma Tumorigenesis Via Upregulation Of Postn And Activation Of Wnt And Stat3 Signaling, Miller Huang, Wanqi Fang, Alvin Farrel, Linwei Li, Tania Porras Corredor, Shahab Asgharzadeh, John Maris, William A. Weiss

Research Symposium

Background: Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children. Two of the earliest known genetic drivers of NB are the oncogene MYCN and receptor tyrosine kinase ALK. While animal models show MYCN and mutationally active ALK F1174L can accelerate NB tumorigenesis, the mechanism of this cooperation is unknown. This study applied a human stem cell-based model to elucidate how ALK cooperates with MYCN to accelerate tumorigenesis of NB.

Methods: Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were engineered with doxycycline-inducible MYCN and constitutively active ALKF1174L. These iPSCs were differentiated into trunk neural crest cells (tNCCs) and orthotopically transplanted into …

Effects Of Phosphogypsum, Phsophorus And Lime On Andropogon Gayanus Kunth, V T. Paulino, E Malavolta

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There are several factors which determine the low animal productivity in the tropics. Among these factors, inadequate nutrition is the most limiting one followed by the low natural fertility and high acidity of the soils in these regions. Previous findings have shown important soil nutrient deficiencies in some Brazilian cerrado soils. Malavolta (1952) demonstrated sulfur (S) deficiencies, while Werner et al. (1967) found plant response to S. Responses to phosphorus addition are very common in this kind of soil and in tropical America there are rates of phosphorus being applied, which sometimes are uneconomical for the formation and maintenance of …
